The R&D Tax Credit will consist of a 40 per cent non-refundable tax credit and a 45 per cent refundable tax credit for firms with a turnover of $20 million or less. The new refundable tax credit will not be subject to an expenditure cap. The Australian Government is committed to ensuring Australia makes the best use of its innovative and creative potential. A YEAR IN design Described as one of the most successful years to date, the 2009 Australian International Design Awards celebrated some of the highest quality designed products from across the globe and acknowledged an industry which is tackling economic and environmental challenges head-on.
Australia’s longest running design awards program, Standards Australia’s Australian International Design Awards recognises product design and innovation excellence. With no fixed number of finalists or winners, products are judged on their own design merit against a common set of criteria.

The Products
“Increasingly, products are going through the professional design process, resulting in a much higher standard of output,” said Stephanie Watson, Program Director of the Australian International Design Awards.
In the second year as an international program, Australian-designed products continued to dominate, accounting for approximately 60 per cent of the 154 total entries submitted this year. Local and international design consultancies went head-to-head with multinational companies including Qantas, Miele, Volkswagen, Audi and British Airways, and entries were received from countries including Switzerland, Sweden, Germany, UK, Portugal, China, France, USA, Italy, New
Over the course of the assessment process, it became clear the quality of design was higher than ever before and a record number of Design Awards would be presented.
“In my seven years with the Design Awards, I’ve never seen participants consider environmental factors as seriously as they have this year,” she added. ”There is such high quality design in the marketplace.”

The Judging
The Australian International Design Awards program assesses entries against key elements of design – innovation, visual and emotional appeal, functionality, quality of manufacture, human factors and environmental sustainability. The two-stage assessment process commences via internet shortlisting with more than 600 design experts from around the world invited to vote. From here, a shortlist is determined and products are shipped to Sydney for the final round of judging. In the final assessments, judges touch, dismantle, operate and experience products before discussing, debating and marking each entry. This year, with such a diverse range of products, the judges travelled offsite to assess large machinery and automotive products, donned sporting apparel, boarded a plane to assess an aircraft seat, jumped on a spring-free trampoline, went jogging in high-tech socks, made coffee, tested kitchenware, and reclined in office seating. “We place a lot of emphasis on the hands-on assessment process because, ultimately for consumers, having a product that functions properly or is comfortable and easy to use is what matters most,” said Watson. “The hardest task for judges is to reach a unanimous decision on the winner of the top prize,” she added. “This year, with the standard of entry so high, it wasn’t until the last day of judging that a clear winner emerged.” The Awards
The 2009 Design Awards Presentation Night was hosted by Julia Zemiro, host of SBS TV’s RocKwiz. The night featured video presentations from Her Excellency Ms Quentin Bryce, the Governor-General of Australia and The Hon. Kim
Carr, Minister for Innovation, Industry, Research and Science, pledging their support for Australia’s design industry. Appearances by Dr Terry Cutler, Chair of the National Innovation Review and Australian design icon Marc Newson further strengthened the sense of community and excitement. “Last year was about celebrating our 50th anniversary. This year we decided to address upfront some key issues designers and manufacturers are currently facing,” explained Watson. “As well as showcasing the finalists, our opening video dealt with the impact of the global financial crisis, the oversupply of products to the market, our environment’s inability to deal with them and how industrial designers are part of the problem and the solution,” she said. “It was a bold move, but one that was applauded by all in the room.” The night saw a few records broken with 30 Design Awards presented, representing a 67 per cent increase on the 2008 results. There was also a record 85 per cent increase in Australian designed products that received a Design Award, a very positive sign for the Australian design industry. “Australia has established itself as a serious design force internationally,” said Watson. “Australian industrial designers are taking their skills abroad, and our cultural diversity and close proximity to Asia has created lucrative business opportunities between local consultancies and international clients.” The Future
Following a successful 2009, the Australian International Design Awards team is already planning new initiatives and activities for 2010 and beyond.
Standards Australia remains committed to growing and promoting Australia’s design industry and fostering a culture of design and innovation among the general community through these Design Awards. “We have developed a trusted and respected design assessment program over many years,” said Watson. “Our aim now is to challenge the traditional functions of a Design Awards program and become the most important and accessible resource for Australia’s design industry.” This includes promoting Australian design nationally and internationally, showcasing the best examples of product design to consumers, highlighting examples of design success stories where investing in design has paid dividends, and bringing together designers and businesses to enhance Australian business, industry and the community.

An economy seat with first class design Qantas has taken economy class travel to new heights with judges awarding the Qantas A380 Economy Seat the 2009 Australian International Design Award™ of the Year.
With the exception of the final destination, long-haul international flying has limited appeal – particularly if you occupy a seat at the back of the plane. So if economy travel could be improved with a few inches more leg room or a more ergonomically-comfortable recline, would you be enticed? Qantas thinks so. Since 2003, the international airline carrier has heavily invested in design and innovation strategies to improve the travel experience for its passengers – including economy class travellers. World renowned Australian Industrial Designer Marc Newson was appointed Creative Director of Qantas and given the directive to reinvent the inflight experience onboard its new A380 aircraft. The project to develop the A380 Economy Seat took five years and was a collaborative effort between Qantas, Newson and German seat manufacturer Recaro. The aim was to create a next generation seat that was not only stylish but also functional and innovative. With the customer in mind, a clear focus was given to comfort, space and ergonomics.

The winner is considered to be of world-class calibre, with attributes over and above all other Award winners competing in the competition in the same year.

According to Newson, the team approached the project as a “pure Industrial Design challenge” with added limitations imposed by the aircraft industry such as space restrictions, health, safety, testing and fire regulations, leaving little room for creativity. “Basically, it was similar [to other projects for the A380] but on a larger scale. Given the number of economy seats, we had much more freedom to explore mass production of certain elements which is not generally possible with smaller programs,” said Newson. “In conjunction with Recaro, we were able to push the boundaries much further than would normally be expected.” This bold approach led to the integration of a range of new innovations and features previously not explored in economy class seating, including a single beam seat design to optimise knee and shin room, a seat base which automatically moves in conjunction with the seat recline providing a more ergonomic seat position to firmly support the occupant’s back, and a unique foot rest net attached to the seat in front.
In addition, Qantas and Newson chose exposed carbon fibre for the backshell of the seat, drawing on the material’s striking appearance, weight advantages and durability; and introduced custom-designed seat cushioning and a wide-screen monitor for improved comfort and entertainment. Vanessa Hudson, Head of Customer Product and Service Development at Qantas said every aspect of the seat’s design was considered throughout the development process and customers were consulted at every step. “A significant amount of customer input and testing went into this project,” said Hudson. “From ideas generation through to ergonomic fit testing based on population measurements, ergonomic comfort testing to optimise cushioning comfort for positions adopted during flight, overnight sleep testing to further test comfort over a longer period of time, and prototype and product testing throughout the design and development process.”

It was this meticulous attention to detail and level of innovation adopted throughout the entire design process, clearly evident in the final product that caught the eye of the judges in the Australian International Design Awards and awarded Qantas the 2009 top accolade. “In a notoriously restrictive design category, this is a world class result... and a beautiful piece of design,” said the judges. “The dual movement recline and foot net are innovative and brilliant. This top prize winner is excellent in all judging categories. It shows a high level of manufacturing expertise and skill, innovation and a little bit of joy.”

Recognising environmentally conscious design decisions 2009 Award for Excellence in Sustainable Design Sustainability Victoria, the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) and WSP Environmental in partnership with Standards Australia are proud to present the 2009 Award for Excellence in Sustainable Design to the Electrolux Refrigeration Collection 2008. Environmentally superior products are not niche eco’ or green’ products, but everyday products that have been designed to eliminate or minimise harm to the environment and society, as well as deliver increased resource efficiency across the entire product lifecycle, while remaining functional, safe, desirable and cost effective. The design principles for achieving innovative products with higher levels of environmental performance include: • Efficient design – minimise resource inputs and waste, ie: do more with less • Safe design – avoid toxic and hazardous substances in materials and processes • Cyclic design – materials can be continuously cycled through industrial or natural systems • Communication design – provide verifiable consumer information about the product’s environmental performance The Electrolux Refrigeration Collection 2008, designed by Scott King, clearly demonstrates a sophisticated approach to Design for Sustainability that is commercially relevant. The range reflects lifecycle thinking oriented towards addressing key environmental issues and impacts. All 14 models in the Collection are designed to minimise energy consumption and maximise efficiency. These new refrigerators use 49 per cent less energy than 10 year old models of equivalent capacity, and as a result contribute less greenhouse gas emissions. The models also use Isobutane, a non-synthetic refrigerant with a significantly lower Global Warming Potential. An expected life span of 20 years means that these noteworthy features are locked in to maximise higher levels of environmental performance and quality. Electrolux underpins these positive outcomes with a comprehensive Product Stewardship service to ensure end-of-life refrigerators are recovered, disassembled and recycled in an environmentally sound manner. As a partnership, Sustainability Victoria, the Design Institute of Australia and WSP Environmental are committed to the pursuit of excellence in sustainable design. In addition to recognising outstanding examples of sustainable design practice, such as the Refrigeration Collection 2008 from Electrolux, the partners advocate sustainable design as a priority in education, research, public policy and leadership.
Education It is recognised that sustainable design education is critical for students, educators and practitioners alike. Core sustainable design content must be included in design programs for tertiary students and encouragement of sustainable design in professional development programs for practitioners and academics are equally important. The DIA’s Education Policy clearly identifies knowledge of ethically responsible design in relation to people and the environment as a core component of all design education. Research Collaborative research between national agencies, research institutions and business can assist in the development of best practice innovations in sustainable design. Australia’s design innovation is illustrated by the Reserve Bank and CSIRO’s cooperation to develop the world’s first plastic bank notes, designed for durability and recyclability. The CSIRO is using this technology to develop the world’s first printable plastic solar cell. Other Australian sustainable design innovations are evident in furniture, building materials and textiles. Public policy Establishing a national approach to sustainable design policy across all key areas of endeavour and recognition of the role of design and innovation in sustainability strategies are critical to public policy. Despite a distinct lack of leadership and encouragement at the national level, Australian designers are leaders in sustainable design and eco-innovation, encouraged by innovative policies and programs by some state governments. Leadership Support for and uptake of sustainable design practices by leading government agencies and business stakeholders will help drive design for sustainability. Smart companies are increasingly turning to sustainability as a means to differentiate themselves in the crowded marketplace, as well as an opportunity to reposition or reinvent themselves in the post-global financial crisis economy. Electrolux’s focus on sustainability as evidenced by their Australian International Design Awards win, and recent reports about HP, Dell and Apple competing to design the most sustainable computer and to be the most sustainable company, highlight the marketability of sustainable design.

With a little encouragement, we can help the next generation of designers develop a love of problem solving that will ensure the future of our industry is in capable hands. The Australian Design Award – James Dyson Award (formerly Australian Design Award – Dyson Student Award) has been doing this for the past nine years; providing a platform for local design students to showcase their talent to the Australian design industry. Each year Dyson, the Australian International Design Awards and a host of industry experts come together to celebrate the next generation of young design talent in Australia. In 2009 a record number of entries were received into the Award. All had embraced the Award’s ethos to create projects with a view to complete design; that is, design which places function first and foremost, but that doesn’t neglect to look at other intrinsic factors including sustainability, ergonomics and aesthetics. The passion and dedication which goes into creating each project is evident in the amount of research and work undertaken to provide an entry that is well resolved and in many instances, ready to take to market. It’s this same passion that has propelled James Dyson throughout his career; continuing his pursuit of groundbreaking product innovation and technology. A desire to share this passion is what led him to want to help students realise their design potential, knowing it’s these young people who will create practical solutions to our 21st century challenges of sustainability, housing and an ageing population. This year, Australia’s 13 student finalists compete against 450 students from around the globe in the James Dyson Award. An opportunity we hope will propel and encourage them to continue to take on the world as they move forward in their design careers.

This year Industrial Design at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) is celebrating 20 successful years with many of its graduates making their mark on the world in Industrial Design and associated fields.
Receiving a Design Award for the Lattissima Coffee Machine and a Design Mark for the Perfecta Coffee Machine in the consumer category, De’Longhi Marketing Manager, Jason Haskins said: ‘’Now more than ever, consumers are looking for innovative, time and effort saving products that have lasting effectiveness, looks and efficiency. A key feature of this success is encouraging young designers through support from industry such as collaborative projects and design competitions. Meanwhile, student Sam Adeloju has just won first prize in a design competition sponsored by the Association of Rotational Moulders Australasia. Industrial Design at UNSW continues to evolve. Powered by 4design 4design has achieved a world first with the successful development of the Mainline B Series Adaptor System for Power and Data Corporation. Designed to fit with the Mainline power track distribution system, which enables access to power at any point along its length, the series comprises a range of dedicated adaptors each suitable for a specific regional electrical standard, but designed from a common platform allowing a global solution. The common platform means that more than 75 per cent of the adaptor’s components are the same across all regional variants. At 4design, the project’s challenge was to develop a system to cater to a minimum of 10 key regions – no mean feat considering the different socket footprints and regulatory requirements of each region. 4design established a matrix of the physical and regulatory constraints and developed a 3D template which defines minimums and maximums accordingly. This complex 3D database not only establishes the areas of commonality, but also allows new adaptor variants to be easily added to the range with the assurance that key physical and safety parameters will be automatically met. 2009 Powerhouse Museum Design Award and Selection
Since 1992 the Powerhouse Museum has recognised excellence in Australian product design with its own award and selection as part of the Australian International Design Awards program. The aim is to recognise design with the potential to make a positive difference to the world by improving health, wellbeing or the environment. This year’s selection includes everything from plastic sinks to cutting edge sports products and shows how design impacts on every part of life. The selection is made from the Australian International Design Awards finalists and considers good design, innovation and the significance of a product to Australia’s material culture. The Museum displays the selected products in the Success and Innovation gallery for one year as part of the annual Australian International Design Awards exhibition, and also features a selection of finalists from the Australian Design Award – James Dyson Award. From the selection one stand-out design is chosen for the Powerhouse Museum Design Award. This year’s winner, the Grael, represents excellence in product, software and electronics design. Its smart and streamlined form integrates innovation, sustainability, and user awareness. It is an Australian
product that has the potential to make a significant impact worldwide by improving the quality of health and wellbeing for those suffering sleep disorders.
