The first word
THE BEATING HEART
It is a delight to be sharing the love of design as Guest Editor of this Kitchen and Bathroom issue of Habitus. As the first of a series of six collectable issues, it is a joy to begin the series. At Arent & Pyke, we believe there is an alchemy at play in the best of spaces. All of the elements — volume, texture, light and colour, architecture and object, combine to create something truly special, that is greater than the sum of its parts.
When it comes to the kitchen (p. 76), we are in our most elemental of places. It is the heart and soul of how we live and really what it means to be at home. Whether the kitchen is for one or the chaos of an extended family or catering to the ebb and flow of blended families, there is always the need for great respect in designing for emotional connections, which in turn, drive aesthetic and practical decisions.
This issue of Habitus also looks at bathrooms (p. 88), another of my favourite rooms to design. While the kitchen is the show-pony of our aspirational self, the bathroom is the inner world, the place for calm reflection, but also the place for joyful splashing around. And, then there are the separate bathrooms, the powder room where design imagination can run wild, the primary suite which increasingly looks like an expanded exploration of a private world. Kids bathrooms can be fun or serious depending on the age and demeanour, but should never be cookie cutter.
Looking beyond the kitchen and bathroom, we profile Luke Moloney (p. 48), a talented architect and my dear friend. Sophie Travers (p.56) at the Australian Tapestry workshop is a delight, as is Christopher Boots (p.64), who has never designed anything boring ever!
The featured projects (p. 133) as always are inspiring, exciting and challenging to expectations. I hope you enjoy this special edition of Habitus and find clear ways to express your emotional connection to design.
