EDITOR’S LETTER
O
UR COVER THIS MONTH IS MEANT TO BE PROVOCATIVE. IT ASKS WHO WILL BE BOLD ENOUGH TO PUT STRUCTURAL TIMBER TO ITS GREAT POTENTIAL IN AUSTRALIA.
One way to demonstrate it would be to develop ground-breaking exemplar project. Maybe even something like the famous towering Metropol Parasol structure, built using laminated veneer lumber (LVL). With numerous innovative timber applications now proven overseas, Australian designers are itching for support to show what can be done here with the material (see page 8). In current events, after years of campaigning and pleading by the building industry - this publication included - we were delighted to learn recently that Australian government leaders have finally decided to make the National Construction Code (NCC) accessible on the web and at no cost. If our readers’ responses are anything to go by, the industry’s pretty happy with the announcement (see comments, page 4). Groups like the Australian Institute of Building (AIB) have spent years pushing for the vital resource to be made freely and easily available. The group even ran a campaign in the early 2000s called ‘Set the BCA free’. It may have taken a decade, but now it’s happening. Free access will be available to the NCC from 2015 and onward editions. Registered users will be able to view all parts of the code in web browsers and by downloading PDFs. That includes the Building Code of Australia (BCA), Volume One and Two; and the Plumbing Code of Australia (PCA), as Volume Three. We don’t yet know how it will be made accessible on mobile devices and so on. Details will be announced in coming months. But the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) has confirmed that you’ll be able to pre‐register for access from December 1, 2014 by visiting their website. To get an idea of the benefit of freely sharing this resource online, State and Federal Government Minsters believe the move will increase the number of building and plumbing practitioners using the NCC from 12,000 to around 200,000 across Australia.

Setting the BCA free can only be a good thing. With that hurdle overcome, the next item on the agenda would have to be ensuring that the actual building products are up to standards. The industry has also been calling for some time for the establishment of an official agency to work to improve the level of compliance. You can safely bet you’ll be hearing more about this in the near future.

NEWS Solar Steel roofing era edgeS cloSer to reality In an Australian first, pre-painted Colorbond steel sheet roofing with integrated thin-film solar technology was retrofitted on a Sydney home in June. The old corrugated steel roof of the house was replaced with the first building-integrated photovoltaic-thermal (BIPV-T) system in Australia. It produces electricity and thermal energy, while an innovative thermal duct system warms and cools air to supplement air conditioning in the home. The first residential application was made earlier in the Illawarra region, where a tile roof was replaced with the integrated PV system to demonstrate the product’s versatility. The $5 million project is being undertaken by Bluescope, partly funded by the Government’s Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). “This new integrated PV system has been designed to provide a

low cost system for Australian residential, commercial and industrial rooftops,” says Ivor Frischknecht of ARENA. “These first installations are an important step as the technology moves towards commercialisation and cost competitiveness with conventional rooftop PV.” Designed specifically for Australia’s climate and building environments, Bluescope is aiming to reduce the system’s costs and viability through improved PV modules and roofing designs, reduced
packaging and transport, improved building energy efficiency and low-cost and easy installation. Inverters, which transform the electricity harvested from sunlight by PV solar panels into a form that can be used by electrical appliances, are also being developed.

CONSTRUCTION TENDER PROJECTS – AN AUSTRALIAN WIDE SNAPSHOT NFOLINK – BUILDING PRODUCTS NEWS INVITED BCI AUSTRALIA ECONOMICS ANALYST DON SMITH TO GIVE HIS TAKE ON THE STATE OF TENDERING IN THE AUSTRALIAN BUILDING INDUSTRY.
I
Tendering is a prudent and well accepted way for architects and project managers to get value for money for their clients on construction projects. Pick a short list of builders with appropriate experience, resources and reputation and issue them with documentation to a professional standard and one has eliminated most of the
Yet the flow of tenders is far from running dry. The enclosed extracts from BCI Australia’s database illustrate the range of construction activity both in contention and ready to go - and there is more to come. We have also been observing that the construction “pipeline” continues to build with increasing numbers of projects waiting for the green lights.
“WHY IS THERE A GENERAL IMPRESSION THAT CONSTRUCTION TENDERING IS IN THE DOLDRUMS?” DON SMITH
variables in choosing who should undertake the work. And it goes without saying that the competitive process drives the pricing in line with the best current market rates. Economic commentators are pointing to a resurgence in construction activity picking up the slack in declining capital investment in the mining and resources sector – so why is there a general impression that construction tendering is in the doldrums? Of course the construction industry is not uniform. Currently residential work is racing ahead but not so the commercial, industrial and other non-residential sectors. As shown, there are some substantial residential projects out to tender and

In turn, those green lights are waiting on the development of favourable sentiment. According to economic commentators such as the NAB (National Australia Bank), business confidence has been growing although improvement in business conditions has been lagging. Consumer confidence also had been rising but the scary Federal Budget has given that a bit of a thumping. Nevertheless, taking the wider view and again quoting the Reserve Bank “… continued accommodative monetary policy should provide support to demand, and help growth to strengthen over time”. And another line from their Interest Decision Statement, 3 June 2014 “Signs of improvement in investment intentions in some other sectors are emerging, but these plans remain tentative, as firms wait for more evidence of improved conditions before committing to significant expansion.” Therefore, it seems quite likely that as the favourable evidence accumulates, those commitments will get signed off and the backlog of construction plans will hit the tender market. This will be welcome news for the builders who are actively in the tender market.■

recently awarded, however, a large proportion of this work is either negotiated or undertaken directly by the developer (often referred to as owner/builder projects). Instead it is the non-residential sector that typically generates tendering activity and this is still underperforming. Another major source of tenders is the public sector and in particular the State Governments, who have been pretty vocal about how difficult they are finding it to make ends meet (the exception being in relation to infrastructure projects, for which the civil engineering sector is most grateful!). Even the Reserve Bank has noted this situation – its preferred turn of phrase is “Public spending is scheduled to be subdued”.

PROMOTIONAL MESSAGE It should be recognised that tendering is a demanding exercise for builders and their subcontractors. With this very much in mind, BCI is currently introducing its new TenderManager online service. By streamlining the routine tasks of sorting documents, defining what docments are required by each of the trades, selecting the subcontractors in each trade and monitoring the responses, BCI TenderManager releases the builders’ estimators from the mundane tasks to come up with new ideas for the cost effective delivery of the project.

BUILDING BIGGER AND BETTER TIMBER BUILDINGS WITH LAMINATED VENEER LUMBER
1 [WORDS] GERALDINE CHUA
I
MAGINE STANDING IN A SUPERMARKET FILLED WITH BUILDING MATERIALS, TASKED WITH COLLECTING THE PRODUCTS YOU WILL NEED FOR YOUR PROJECT. AUTOMATICALLY, YOU TURN TOWARDS THE CONCRETE AND STEEL AISLES…BUT WAIT, WAS THAT WOOD? The unassuming middle child, timber is often forgotten when it comes to structural applications, but has the potential to revolutionise the way Australian buildings are being constructed. This method of construction is far from new. The Great Buddha Hall of the Todaiji Temple in Nara, Japan is 300 years old and one of the largest wooden buildings in the world. Stadthaus, a nine-storey London building designed by Waugh Thistleton, was previously the tallest timber residential structure in the world – a title recently, and narrowly, claimed by Lend Lease’s Forte in Melbourne. But these type of projects are still a rarity in Australia. Here, the engineered timber industry is only in its infancy, lagging behind Europe and increasingly, the US and New Zealand. There are, however, a few hopeful that the tide will turn sooner rather than later. Sydney-based Fitzpatrick + Partners (F+P) is
one practice which believes there is a compelling case for building ‘tall timber’, investing significant research and development into timber applications. Rod Pindar, a principal at F+P, attributes current industry inertia to a lack of demand in investing in new technology within the Australian construction industry. “All the technologies we use to build these days have been around for decades. We are used to them, we’re experienced with them, and there’s been no need to change,” says Pindar of the reigning concrete and steel. “There’s the attitude in the industry of ‘we know what we are doing, so why do we need to do it differently?’”
STRONGER, FASTER, WARMER, GREENER Typically fabricated off-site, engineered wood products have good strength-to-weight ratios, and are manufactured with millimetre accuracy and sophisticated detailing. This allows buildings to go up on site much quicker and more efficiently than traditional construction. The star Australian example to date is Forte, where walls, floors and ceilings were made from large slabs of timber formed by gluing pieces of timber together (cross laminated timber). According to developer Lend Lease,
this method helped to cut construction times by 30 per cent and reduced the number of workers required on site. The decrease in time and noise on site furthermore reduced the impact of construction on local communities. Contrary to popular belief, engineered wood also performs well against fire because of its char factor. “The analogy is if you are trying to start a fire in your backyard or a barbeque, you don’t put a log on it, you start with twigs and paper. You are not going to start a fire just by striking a match under a log,” Pindar explains. “You need a large, established fire before that log is going to start to burn, and when it does, it will char and burn slowly. “This is measurable and accounted for in the engineering of the timber.” Large timber beams are therefore able to retain their integrity even after being susceptible to a fire. Compare this to steel, which requires costly protective coatings or cladding to protect it in the event of a fire. The natural aesthetic of wood is another big advantage of timber construction. A timber building has a warmth to it, soft to touch, and a particular ambience that is calming and inviting.

TIMBER
Of course, sustainability remains a key incentive for the use of engineered timber. A truly renewable resource, timber plantations typically have a 25 year lifecycle, which means there is an endless supply as long as the wood is harvested sustainably and responsibly.
A unique example of the flexibility of the material is the Metropol Parasol in Seville, Spain. Designed by German architect Jurgen Mayer-Hermann and completed in 2011, it is one of the world’s largest timber buildings, reaching a height of 28 metres and covering over 11,000sqm.
Moreover, wood is highly recyclable, and absorbs and stores carbon.
The floating structure, offering an elevated plaza as well as multiple bars and restaurants underneath and inside the parasols, uses the highly load-bearing Finnforest Kero LVL which was manufactured in Finland. The timber was post-cured with an epoxy resin, and finished with a waterproof polyurethane spray coating.

LVL-ING UP IN AUSTRALIA 3 One of the products that could potentially change the way buildings are being constructed in Australia is laminated veneer lumber (LVL).
3 Metropol Parasol. Image: Nikkol Rot for Holcim
First developed in the early 1970’s, LVL is a high-strength engineered timber product formed by assembling wood veneers (thin sheets of wood that are uniformly thick) and bonding them together with a ‘type A’ phenolic adhesive.
4 Metropol Parasol. Image: Nikkol Rot for Holcim
According to Alex Edwards, an associate at design and engineering consultancy firm Arup, a log is peeled to a 3mm thin laminate, dried and sorted by its physical properties, before being laminated back together in a way that maximises the strength of the output.
4 “The timber is produced in a continuous 1200 wide billet up to about 90mm thick. Sections that are deeper have to be made by some form of secondary fabrication process,” he explains. Notably, the grains of each veneer are oriented in the same direction, with the veneering process improving the structural properties of LVL by randomising any defects; strength-reducing knots, for instance, are dispersed in various ‘locations’ as they are peeled into the veneer. As a result, LVL is uniform and comparable in strength to solid timber, concrete and steel. It is also more durable and less prone to shrinking or warping, although its durability is, in part, based on the species of wood used. Some major advantages of using LVL in construction are its relatively low cost, and the fact that it can be manufactured to desired lengths and shapes. This opens up the door to a myriad of design possibilities.
As the Metropol Parasol shows, LVL is certainly not a new development, even in Australia. Here, the technology has mostly been employed for domestic construction and smaller residential projects as floor joists, roof truss components and portal frames. However, LVL is also suitable for public and commercial buildings, and can be utilised as cross beams to support floors and ceilings, beam structures to support the weight of rooflines, or in the construction of weight bearing walls.
BEAUTY, STRUCTURE AND COST COLLIDE: NETBALL CENTRAL BY SCOTT CARVER Netball Central in Homebush, NSW, is a great example of Australia making headway in utilising LVL for larger scale projects. Designed by Scott Carver and Arup for Netball NSW (funded by the NSW Government, Office of Communities), it is currently being constructed using 21 LVL portal frames.

THE CHALLENGE OF THE NEW
When asked why LVL was chosen as the main structural material for Netball Central, project architect Claire Matheson
To date, all 17 major portals for the standard court halls have been erected. However, the building process was not without its challenges, most of which derived from an unfamiliarity of the product. Fully understanding the material was essential for the design team, with Matheson making two trips to New Zealand to research the benefits and challenges of LVL, how it is manufactured, and therefore how best to use it.
“WE NEED SMARTER SYSTEMS THAN WHAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE. CONTRACTORS ARE UNDER EVER INCREASING PRESSURE TO DELIVER BUILDINGS CHEAPER AND FASTER, WITH STRINGENT SAFETY STANDARDS AND HIGH ON-SITE COSTS. TRADITIONAL METHODS OF CONSTRUCTION ARE STRUGGLING TO DELIVER QUALITY OUTCOMES, AND I THINK PEOPLE ARE BEGINNING TO LOOK TO ALTERNATIVE MEANS OF CONSTRUCTION”
This due diligence process has proven beneficial and helped the team to detail the material appropriately, such as the orientation to reduce visibility of glue banding without increasing fabrication costs. It has also helped to identify
RULE BOOK The Building Code of Australia (BCA) does not hinder the use of timber as a building material. It includes a provision for new technologies for alternate solutions like timber, but will stipulate that the chosen product needs to meet specific requirements and performances.
WHAT TO ASK • What type of engineered timber will you use? • Who is going to fabricate the project? • Where will you source the product from? Is it available in Australia or must it be imported? • What fire rating is needed for the material? • Where will the timber be used – outdoors or indoors? Will it used in a corrosive or wet environment?

The centre is the first in Australia to be solely dedicated to a female sport, and includes five standard netball courts and a show court, as well as administration offices and amenities. The LVL portals use a joint design developed by the University of Auckland and the Structural Timber Innovation Company (STIC). Called ‘Quick Connect’, it consists of pre-fabricated and pre-installed LVL sleeves screwed to the main portal frame LVL members, grooved to allow the insertion of threaded rods fastened to the receiving columns or rafters. This technique allows the timber frames to be bolted together at height, instead of having to screw them together. By using Quick Connect and LVL, construction time and costs have been greatly reduced, with the project to feature the largest Quick Connect portals
NETBALL CENTRAL BY SCOTT CARVER
says simply that it is a different product – one not commonly used in Australia – and therefore the perfect fit for the nation’s first uniquely female sports centre. “We felt that LVL provided a very different language to your standard sports facility with grey or white circular, high-section steel structure. It has a very different feel and a warmth,” she explains. “Cost and structural reasons were also considered, but our initial desire for the material was from a design perspective.” Sustainability was another reason why the architects were so keen on LVL – it is a carbon sink for timber, and essentially a lower grade timber product (softwood) made to perform “structural gymnastics”. Woven into the heart of Netball Central’s structural and aesthetic vocabulary, the massive LVL structural sections (1200x280) have become an essential element of the architectural language of the building.
handling challenges. For instance, LVL being manufactured from Radiata Pine is quite soft, and must be handled differently from steel. Another challenge for the team was not having an existing standard to work with and towards. As a result, they had to formulate a new ‘language’ to communicate the appearance they wanted for the raw product, such as the number and frequency of knots, and splits within the face veneer itself. “We had to ensure that we were getting a raw product with the specific feel we wanted and that was visually appealing for the fabricators. The main question for us was how we can provide a language and standard that would set a good benchmark for public buildings,” Matheson says. Arup’s Alex Edwards adds that getting these nitty gritty details down pat from the outset is essential for successful timber buildings. “They [architects and designers] need to be asking who is going
• The LVL portal frames for Netball Central were supplied by Nelson Pine and fabricated by HunterBond • Carter Holt Harvey’s Hyspan LVL is manufactured from Radiata Pine veneers. It can be width sawn or docked on-site to required size or lengths without affecting its design properties • Hyne Timber’s LVL E-Beam+ (F17) is an engineered timber alternative to F17 hardwood. Manufactured from plantation growth softwood by laminating pine veneer in a continuous assembly, it can be used as floor joists and bearers, lintels and verandah beams, and structural roof members

recently in Lend Lease’s Library at The Dock, Australia’s first CLT public building. Created by stacking kiln-dried timber boards with their lengths laid at 90 degree angles to each other, the product is not being manufactured in Australia, although The Tilling Group was recently appointed the Australian and New Zealand distributors of Austria’s KLH products. Le Messurier’s OPTIM cross laminated timber building system is also available for use here, with the product manufactured by Merk Timber in Germany. Glued laminated timber or glulam is more readily available, produced by gluing together smaller pieces of stress graded and seasoned timber. There is no shortage of Australian manufacturers, including Laminated Timber Suppliers, which offers the Durabeam GL10 Cypress (F11), and Hyne Timber’s Hyne Beam 17. to fabricate the project and what type of material they are going to use. There isn’t a lot of standardisation in the timber industry with different manufacturers producing different grades of material, notes Edwards.
As the Netball Central case study shows, engineered timber has a lot of potential in Australia. However, a rise in interest does not equate to a full blown timber revolution, with many of the products available only just starting to enter mainstream building industry consciousness.
“Likewise, different fabricators have different equipment that means that their preferred methods differ. Working with a fabricator early in the process is more important than other construction materials.

Despite the many benefits of mass timber construction, Pindar acknowledges that a fully timber building is not always the right solution for every site. However, he hopes that wood will be seen as a legitimate option alongside steel and concrete. “I think the question should not be why timber is suited for commercial office design, but why timber is not being used for multi-storey commercial buildings. I don’t think there is a compelling reason for that,â€? he concludes. â–

The redeveloped ‘walk up’ buildings on Elizabeth Street, Richmond are the first completed part in a series of upgrades from Williams Boag Architects (WBa) which promise to transform the district’s housing estate into a benchmark affordable housing facility. The masterplan was commissioned by the Victorian Government Office of Housing in accordance with the joint State and Federal Government initiative ‘Building Better Regional Cities’. As project architect Peter Williams explains, this entailed stringent design, safety, budget and sustainability guidelines. “The key deliverables of the Elizabeth Street housing project were the provision of 207 social housing apartments, on-site car parking, achievement of an average of 6.8 star energy rating for each building, a safe and engaging living environment and a benchmark starting point for eventual future stages of the project,” he said. The apartments and amenity are delivered across four six-storey high density buildings, 10 per cent of which are accessible apartments and 10 per cent of which are adaptable for older persons. “Affordability of the dwellings, the standard and amenity of the individual units and the integrated landscape are clear indications of what is possible when a collaborative process is applied to a rigorous brief,” says V I Williams. a series of archway entrances to the walk-ups are highly noticeable against the rectangular geometry of the buildings and declares ‘entry’ from the long distance approach. For williams, it is “way-finding on the macro scale”. Spotted gum sticks in machined tongue and groove profile were provided by woodform architectural to form the entrance archways. the spotted gum is coated in a clear finish from cutek and blends well with the marine-grade ply facade directly above which is finished in onyx gold aqua oil from Quantum timber Finishes. the

the open walkways overlooking the courtyard area encourage the residents to interact with the outdoor public space. charcoal boral designer blocks in a variety of surface finishes are used throughout these walkways, offering textural elements that move and change during the day. tremco water proofing products seal and tread exposed concrete surfaces, providing a minimum r12 Slip resistance rating.
one of the key uses of colour in the project is its application to the underside of balconies and roof soffits. the differing colours were chosen by williams and his team as a complementary palette that allows residents to identify with their particular part of the building. “this detail is designed to mitigate perception of height of

project in pictures williams boag incorporated colour in the project to complement and offset the grey hues of the building’s external makeup. a key example is the blue translucent privacy screen louvres that are backlit at night to provide timeless colour for the building at all hours of the day. they are framed in danpalon dp10 aluminium and galvanised steel.
considering the building is a public housing dwelling, practicality and durability were amongst the primary informants for the project brief. Enduring materials, right down to flooring finishes and lighting fixtures, run throughout the project to enrich the amenity and standard of comfort. the windows frames are powder coated aluminium and come from capral’s narrowline 400 series. they are covered by either capral 50 series awnings or bespoke designed, perforated aluminium sun shades; dependant on the window’s geographical aspect. altair oyster lights from Sylvania lighting australasia and Vdt high security troffers from pierlite illuminate public spaces while remaining resistant to vandalism and weather conditions. tarkett iQ granit vinyl flooring line areas with high foot traffic while zincalume exhaust grills and 8mm galvanised fences top off the building’s enduring material elements. dulux professional low-sheen Envir02 paints finish important aspects of the building’s interior and were used by wba because of their low Voc content and to meet ESd design intent.

williams explains that the street between the buildings was seen as a usable outdoor space and designed with human scale rather than car scale. this manifested in the choice of concrete pavers and no kerb instead of a traditional asphalt road. a variety of precast concrete pavers from Stonevue were chosen for this high-traffic area with vehicular and pedestrian suited products placed accordingly. Stainless steel bollards from polite Enterprises corporation will provide safety for pedestrians for many years to come.

LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD BY NEXUS DESIGNS, MELBOURNE [WORDS] GERALDINE CHUA [PHOTOGRAPHY] FRASER MARSDEN
ITTLE RED RIDING HOOD IS MORE THAN JUST A FAIRY TALE, AT LEAST FOR ONE MELBOURNEBASED FAMILY OF SIX.
L
A residential project shaped by the meaningful notion of family and the overriding principles of simple love, the house had been occupied for several years, but as the four children grew so too did the demands on their dwelling. The parents also wanted their home to be brighter and better connected. In response, internal spaces have been reconfigured and given a new lease of life. Walls were knocked down to create an easy to understand and navigate layout, while a new bathroom and walk-in wardrobe was introduced in the master bedroom with some careful planning. However, a minimalistic take on the re-design was essential as the owners wanted to avoid clutter and fuss. While a pared back approach can sometimes run the risk of creating bare and plain spaces, warmth is generated through the various material and product choices, such as the timber floorboards and clean and crisp furnishings. At the heart of it all is the pops of red which run throughout the house. Seen in the dining chairs and kitchen joinery, the bold colour is eye-catching but never overwhelms or weighs down a space. The namesake of the project, red was chosen because of what it stands for – heart, love and emotions – and practically has evolved to become an accent colour bringing a simple home with practical mid-tones to life.
A house can be one of two things – a shell filled with stuff, or a shell with stuff that has the echoed touches of its occupants. Little Red Riding Hood is the latter, and evidently so as soon as one enters the home. Here, Royal Oak engineered floor boards from Harper and Sandiland, pre-stained and pre-finished in Mink Grey, run underfoot, while Dulux’s Natural White paint coats the walls to evoke a sense of simple yet fulfilled living.
All the furniture seen in the living and dining areas are new, connected by similar-shade finishes to minimise fuss. For instance, the American Oak veneer cantilevered shelves in the living room are custom stained to match the Mink Grey floors. The sturdy dining table from MAP International has an American Oak top with a white lime finish and powder coated base, and is complemented by the red stained ash Plywood Porro Neve dining chairs supplied by Space
furniture. A hand tufted, 100 per cent pure New Zealand custom-made floor rug from Bibi Vero completes the space. The architects opened up the area by removing a wall that previously ran along the dining room, creating a corridor between it and the living room. Instead, a wall/joinery (with the painting) was introduced, in part to break up the room, but also to double up as a storage cupboard accessible from the kitchen.

The touches of red seen in the front-of-house extend into the kitchen, a welcoming friend eager to show you where the real action is at. Dulux’s Natural White is used again on the pantry door and kicker, while Dupont’s Cameo White Corian is applied to the cooking zone benchtop. The real magic, however, is in the stainless steel splashback which slides horizontally to reveal more kitchen equipment such as the toaster and kettle. By creating depth, clutter is once again minimised in this room. Zip’s hydro tap all-in-onesystem, Liebherr’s fully integrated fridge, as well as Miele’s large gourmet oven dish and fully integrated dishwasher with cutlery tray, are some of the other appliances used in the kitchen. The red lacquered timber veneer Artek K65 stools are from Anibou.
The same Mint Grey shade featured in the living areas’ floorboards and joinery is repeated in the powder rooms, as seen in the recessed cupboard doors made from the Royal Oak engineered timber floor boards. According to Nexus Designs’ creative director Sonia Simpfendorfer, repeating materials and textures has created a calming effect and sense of continuity throughout the house. This clean simplicity is reflected in the Rogerseller basin, which has a face glazed with porcelain as it is fixed to the mirror. The polished chrome mixer and Catalano Sfera wall hung toilet with underbench cistern are also from Rogerseller. The push plate is hidden out of view, with access to the cistern via a custom panel within the joinery.

The repetition of elements weaves its way into the four children’s bedrooms, which have been designed with similar furniture and joinery, including the wool carpet and overhead shelving unit finished with Dulux Natural White. The Kartell Componibili side tables with a white polyprop finish are supplied by Space, while the metal grey Tolomeo micro bedside and desk lamps are from Artemide.
Despite their similarities, the bedrooms are differentiated by wallpaper colours, each chosen by their owner. The Designers Guild wallpaper seems to come alive with a crayon squiggle that gives a 3D feeling, and includes colours Pimento (red and white stripe) Cobalt (blue stripe), Azure (blue stripe), Heather (purple and white stripe). Designed for kids but not at all childish, these furnishings and furniture are meant to last the children from primary school well into high school, and even university.

The master bedroom remains connected to the rest of the house by shade and material, like the American Oak Veneer shelf which again features the familiar Mink Grey stain. A small but new ensuite bathroom, introduced by a clever manipulation of space, can be hidden by sliding doors that close off to create a wall of timber. Notably, the room has also been enlarged by a new walk-in dressing room which was transformed from an open balcony and features glazed windows. A Jardan Leila king size bed with Boyac linens takes its spot at the centre of the bedroom.
By shedding unwanted layers of accessories, Little Red Riding Hood achieves what was lacking before – a clever use of spaces that have been rejigged and upgraded so they become both functional and aesthetically pleasing. This is done through a considered design that strikes the right balance between simplicity and eye-catching details, with tried-and-tested elements repeated to create a seamless home enhanced by colour.

uSt over the horizon, a new tSunami iS quietly gaining momentum, in the guiSe of Solar Storage, or ‘hyBrid Solar’. Australia has over 1.1 million rooftops adorned with solar panels, providing about one per cent of the nation’s electricity needs. One might not expect such a seemingly tiny proportion of power generation to ruffle any feathers, but this grassroots groundswell of decentralised power production is making the major energy utilities nervous. The likes of Origin and AGL Energy have recently advocated for the removal of rooftop solar subsidies. The installation of photovoltaic solar electricity panels on household and business roofs may have energy utilities concerned over their eroding share of the electricity market, but, to paraphrase the 70’s rock band Bachman-Turner Overdrive, ‘they ain’t seen nothing yet.’ Solar power first gained modest momentum as a source of energy for those philosophically opposed to, or geographically disadvantaged by, the grid: that network which allows power plants to connect users with electricity generated from the likes of coal or hydro. These off-grid folk needed large battery banks to provide power when the sun didn’t shine. And often diesel generators, as a back-up, when the batteries lost all their stored sunlight. Such users had to be quite energy savvy to maximise the efficiency of their systems. Conversely, when grid-connect came along, it was mostly ‘plug-and-play’. No user-involvement required. Panels on the roof, inverter on the wall, and forget about it. Except for the rapturous reduction in ongoing energy costs.
Solar hybrid, is, just as the name suggests, an alchemy of the two systems noted above. Gridconnected photovoltaics and battery storage. It opens the way to every home having their own genie (free solar energy) and a bottle (battery bank) to house it in. Make a wish and the genie leaps to their bidding. Interest in the combination has piqued due to the ever changing nature of the Australian energy market. Grid-connect solar attracted early enthusiasm due to feed-in tariffs, when householders were well paid by utilities for the power they contributed back to the grid. However just as tariffs were being wound back, utilities began raising prices to pay for years of neglect in infrastructure investment. Into this ‘perfect storm’ of disappearing solar rebates and increasing grid bills, rode solar storage. And like all heroes it promises to help the little folk stand up against entrenched power brokers. Hybrid solar generally uses a smart inverter that will send power directly to a home’s needs as the sun beams down. Any excess to household requirements can be shunted either to the grid (to benefit from feed-in tariffs), or to the system’s battery bank for evening and morning use. Some of these battery banks, mostly about the size of a fridge, can also draw power from the grid during ‘off-peak’ period and store it for use later when the grid has moved to peak. During a blackout—when the grid is offline—the inverter channels power from the battery to pre-designated ‘essential circuits’ to keep the likes of lights, fridges and freezers running. Solar storage systems can be retro-fitted to pretty much any home solar configuration. (They can even be used for residences without photovoltaic panels, as householders can benefit from accessing just off-peak electricity.) These, and other, energy routing permutations can

all be managed automatically, in the background, as the household goes about its usual routines. At this year’s Greentech Solar Summit Conference in the USA, Jim Morgensen, director of strategic accounts at SMA, (a 30 year old German solar company), said hybrid solar storage is a hot topic, while speculating that the cost of the storage devices could be coming down even faster than that of the typical PV curve witnessed in recent years. Hot topic indeed. In March 2014, the Clean Energy Council published a discussion paper on the decentralising of Australia’s energy supply, remarking, “For the moment it would seem more likely that households will stay on the grid, but that the role of grid-supplied power will be inverted, from the primary source of power (supplemented by embedded generation like solar PV) to a safety net supplier of last resort, with embedded generation being the primary source of power.” Pause for second. And consider that observation. Australian homes to become the “primary source of power” of their own electricity. How about that for a seismic shift in thinking about the residential housing sector? For a market that barely existed a couple of years ago, the solar storage scene is swiftly becoming very crowded. Here’s a peek at some of the players pioneering the next wave of household energy use.
up to 98 per cent efficient, with 20 year service life (and a 10 year warranty), that includes 5,000 cycles with 70 per cent Depth of Discharge (DoD). This service life is suggested as being three to five time higher than conventional lead acid batteries. The NeeoQube can be scaled up with companion units and housed in the NeeoRack.
auSSie Solar tm5000 Carbon Management Solutions Group (CMS), as the company is also known, assert that their evocatively named TM5000 is the “most affordable battery storage system” in Australia, with its particular suite of features. Their Panasonic 12V lead acid batteries are said not to require maintenance and are configured to provide to storage systems in a choice of three capacities: 5kW, 10kW and 15kW.
leclanché tiBox Swiss-based Leclanché have been in the battery business for more than a century, but that doesn’t mean they can’t move with the times. Their TiBox energy storage system uses new lithium-titanate technology to achieve 15,000 charging and discharging cycles. A full charge is possible in an impressively short one hour. One unit weighs about 120kg and three can be connected in parallel, if more power storage is required.

The PowerRouter inverter lays claim to a “unique capability of being able to automatically cut connection to the electricity grid in the event of power outages,” although the other units mentioned here have a similar attributes. Through its integrated internet connectivity householders can monitor and control their solar power system from anywhere via an online portal, a feature accessible by smartphones. Hailing from the Netherlands, the PowerRouter sports a modular design that allows users to increase their battery storage capacity at any time.

BoSch BPt-S 5 hyBrid The fridge-sized cabinet, which Bosch talk of as a world-first visionary solution, houses lithium-ion storage cells, using a nickel-cobaltaluminium technology (NCA). It is touted as being able to provide “more than 75 per cent of a household’s total consumption – during bright summer months even 100 per cent!” The combination battery bank/inverter/ energy managing BPT-S 5 Hybrid is claimed to be maintenance-free for 20 years, and comes in a capacity range from 4.4 to 13.2 kWh.

magellan dcSS Another acronym burdened product is the DCSS (Direct Current Solar Storage) from Magellan, of Western Australia, which picked up prize money as a Finalist in that state’s 2013 Renewable Energy Technology Challenge. The DCSS is available in a range of three capacities, can be built into new PV systems or added to existing arrays, utilising existing inverters. The 22-year-old company reckon their lithium batteries will retain 70 per cent capacity even after 2,000 cycles of 100 per cent discharge.
In April of this year, German company Solar Technology AG (SMA) launched their Sunny Boy system, claiming it was “the first wallmountable, mass-produced PV inverter with an integrated lithium-ion battery.” The capacity of the integrated battery is around 2kWh, which the company indicates should allow some households to be about 50 per cent self-sufficient for their home energy needs, and provide independence from rising electricity prices.
redflow zBm ZBM stands for Zinc-bromide Battery Module. Known as ‘flow’ batteries, they “undergo a great deal less electrode damage than leadacid batteries.” Redflow also note that “ZBMs can also utilise full 100 per cent depth of discharge, compared to lead-acid’s 40-50 per cent.” But before you get too excited, the company also point out that ZBM accomplish this feat by being approximately five times the size and weight of lead-acid batteries. Still, the Brisbane-based business is talking about a “40 per cent cut in the capital cost of energy storage systems” by the end of 2015.
zen freedom PowerBanK Zen say their Freedom PowerBank has many operational modes, allowing users to program when they want to charge their Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries and when they want to utilise stored power. The technology in the PowerBank, including Active Battery Balancing which helps overcomes issues of battery degradation, is described as “world-leading,” with the units manufactured in South Australia for Australian and international markets. n

RogeRselleR Amelie, designed by RogeRselleR The Rogerseller Amélie is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional claw-foot bath. it is inspired by a traditional chaise lounge, ‘the méridienne’, a 19th century French name given to an asymmetrical daybed with higher headrest and lower footrest. designed and manufactured by Rogerseller, it is made of lightweight lucite acrylic which is warm to touch, and is exceptionally strong, durable, scratch and chemical resistant. lucite can be repaired on-site if subject to damage, extending the life of the product. Amélie includes a waste installation kit, designed at a height to be invisible in most room applications. it received a good design Award in 2014.
dyson AiRblAde TAp FAuceT, by dyson While this one is not Australian, the dyson Airblade Tap with combined hand washing and drying technology impressed judges here to win a 2013 good design Award. it’s also the winner of an iF product design award 2014, and honourable mention in the Red dot awards. The system features integrated circuitry that computes when hands need washing or drying, and adjusts accordingly. infrared sensors pinpoint hand positions and release water from the tap stem. The integrated circuitry then computes when hands are wet and drying is being requested before activating the digital airblade motor, creating two high velocity filtered sheets of air from the tap’s branches to dry hands in 12 seconds. The unit is fast, cost efficient, environmentally friendly and meets high hygiene standards.
Wind RAin FiRe, designed by chRis connell professional category winner in the 2013 Reece bathroom innovation Awards (biA), the flush-mounted shower head combines with an extractor fan in a single unit. The configuration eliminates the issue of another appliance on the ceiling and minimises trade and fit time. The unit places the extractor at the closest point of steam which Reece suggests will minimise foggy mirror and condensation build up on wall surfaces. The shower/extractor is operated automatically by the touch sensor on the shower mixer unit. it also includes an 800mm wide by 80mm strip rail towel-warm. The long flat surface is heated by an internal element incorporating an inbuilt fan, gently blowing heat down the surface of the towel drying the towel much quicker than a conventional towel rail. The designer is in discussions with manufacturers with the product expected to be available on the market in the near future.

Comprised of an exterior and internal cladding layer which sandwich an inner core of insulation, the panels are seeing consistent use in both residential and commercial applications. The inner cores of most insulated panels are filled with hardened closed-cell expanded polystyrene (EPS) which benefit a long-term stable and high-performing thermal performance (R –Value). Alternative inner core fillings include extruded polystyrene, polyisocyanurate and polyurethane foam as well as mineral wool. The variations between insulated panels offered in the Australian market are generally in the makeup of the external skin, with aluminium, Colorbond Steel, fibre cement sheeting and oriented strand board the more prominent cassettes. Size and weight of boards also differ among suppliers, as do their textures and finishes. Lightweight and pre-painted, insulated panels are faster to install than block or precast concrete and are cost effective compared to other decorative facade treatments which entail substantially more sub-frame preparation. Following is a list of popular EPS core insulated panels available in the Australian market:

Aints typicAlly mAke up 80 per cent of A building’s surfAces, but the tins of pigment, resin, solvent And Additives thAt help form the bAre bones of design cAn hAve Adverse environmentAl And heAlth effects. Possibly the most harmful chemical found in paints are Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) – carbon-containing solvents that vaporise into the air readily as paint dries. These VOCs are emitted or ‘off-gassed’ into living spaces and the atmosphere up to five years after the paint has been applied, causing problems for indoor air quality and leading to health issues such as asthma, headaches, nausea and even cancer. The rise in energy efficient, well-sealed buildings has compounded these problems, as VOCs are accumulated within buildings with no way of escape. “There are studies that show that you get 70 per cent of the toxins that you absorb into your body through the air you breathe inside buildings,” says Stuart McPhee, ecolour’s national sales manager. “Eight per cent comes from the food and water we eat and drink, but it is the air that we breathe inside buildings that is doing the most damage to us, and paint is the biggest contributor.” 1
Some VOCs also form ground level ozone by releasing odoriferous chemicals that lead to ‘urban smog’. This has negative impacts on the environment, with the paint industry responsible for up to 16 per cent of all VOC emissions in Australia. So why are paints still being produced with high VOC levels? According to Taubmans’ senior business development manager, Mark Lynch, there are two main types of VOCs in paint, utilised because they help paints to perform well. The first is coalescent, which is the ‘cross-linkage’ between the polymers that allows the paint to become a complete film. The second is propylene glycol. “Generally speaking, propylene glycol is considered the bad VOC, but it is what helps the paint to maintain its wet edge. What this means is that when an applicator is putting paint on the wall, it prevents the paint from drying too quickly, which can result in an inferior finish,” explains Lynch. Completely getting rid of propylene glycol is therefore easier said than done, especially in Australia where climatic conditions are 2

a lot warmer than parts of Europe or North America. A paint product without these VOCs must be able to work in Melbourne in the winter, but also in Darwin in the middle of summer, when paints with a wetter edge will be necessary to ensure desirable results.
voc levels in AustrAliA There are numerous bodies in Australia that determine the usage of products by VOC levels, with the Australian Paint Manufacturer’s Federation (APMF) and the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) being two key organisations.
However, ecolour’s McPhee stresses that zero VOC is better than low VOC: “Architects are looking for better options because they find that low VOC paints are a bit like menthol cigarettes. Menthol cigarettes are better for you for sure, but now we look back at them and think what fools we were for thinking we could keep on smoking and everything will be fine. It’s the same situation with VOCs and paint.”
performAnce: low/zero voc pAints vs solvent-bAsed pAints Of course, whether these low and zero VOC paints are as effective as traditional options is another question altogether. After all, removing VOC solvents does 1 resene zylone sheen voc free paints were featured at the ghd office fitout in newcastle, nsw, based on the gbcA’s limits for low voc emissions 2 the zylone sheen voc free waterborne paints were used on most of the walls at the ghd fitout, and has a controlled low-angle sheen to minimise substrate imperfections 3 conybeare morrison specified porter’s mineral paint for the exteriors of Aspinall house at scots college because of its low voc properties, durability and flat colour, which looks good on heritage buildings
3
Working with the CSIRO, APMF developed the Australian Paint Approval Scheme (APAS), which uses a unique averaging and maximum system to set limits for VOC content in high volume architectural products. This system is expected to give paint manufacturers formulating flexibility whilst delivering reductions in the overall VOC escaping to the atmosphere.
require a complete reformulation of the coating.
The GBCA also encourages the use of low or zero VOC paints via their Green Star credit rating system. Under this tool, credit points are awarded to projects that utilise low VOC certified products. For instance, under the Green Star – Office Interiors v1.1 benchmark, points are gained if 95 per cent of all painted surfaces in a project use low-VOC paints, or if no paint is used.
“Typically if solvent is reduced in a paint product the application characteristics are impacted, making them harder to apply. Other characteristics such as hardness of finish and gloss level can also be impacted.”
Driven by greater awareness of the need to reduce VOC emissions, these shifts have led low VOC paints to become the standard specification by architects in the last five years. These products contain less VOCs or VOC solvents than traditional coatings, but also offer faster drying times, low odour and non-yellowing properties. The growing demand for low VOC paints is reflected in the increasing number of such products on the market. According to the APMF website, the volume of water-based retail architectural coatings produced in 2008 was approximately 12 times that of solvent-based finishes. This gap would have since widened, with new products such as semi-gloss water-based enamels suitable for exterior applications being manufactured.
“When a low VOC product is produced, technology outside the solvent components need to ‘work harder’ to ensure that the application characteristics meet consumer needs,” Dulux trade’s marketing manager, Steve Barnard, explains.
He uses the example of a traditionally high VOC product which has been made available in lower VOC versions – the gloss or semi-gloss products frequently used on doors, windows and trims. Because they contain such high levels of VOC, approximately 450 grams per litre, they have great application characteristics with excellent flow, and leave little or no brush marks if applied correctly. They also dry to a very hard film. Yet, as with most products today, new technology and innovation have allowed paint manufacturers to develop low and zero VOC paints that are comparable to their solvent-based counterparts, with many making great inroads in the last decade. As Taubmans’ head of trade marketing Trevor Lowder admits, achieving zero or low VOC content without sacrificing on paint performance or government and third-party regulations is challenging but not impossible.

INSINkERATOR FOOD WASTE DISPOSER Dispose of smelly messy food scraps with a food waste disposer fitted to your sink The installation of an InSinkErator Food Waste Disposal system is the perfect complement to a modern kitchen and the busy Australian lifestyle. Food scraps are conveniently and hygienically deposited down the sink eliminating the need for food waste bins and the unpleasant odours they omit. The kitchen has become the entertaining hub of our homes and therefore a way of disposing of food waste quickly and easily and eliminating nasty food smells represents the ideal kitchen solution. InSinkErators are a true evolution in how we dispose of food waste. They are now extremely quiet, grind food without the use of blades, therefore safe and eliminate food leftovers in an environmentally responsible way. An average Australian household sends almost 1,000kg of food waste to landfill annually, and it accounts for over 30% of all household waste. Organic food waste when dumped into landfill is a known contributor to the production of harmful green house gas— specifically Methane which is known to be 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. Using an InSinkErator Food Waste Disposer allows food waste to be recycled through the sewerage system, via a waste water plant, where in many instances the Methane gas generated can be converted into usable energy. This all means a win for the environment and a step forward for the modern Australian kitchen.
