EDITOR’S LETTER
‘
DECEPTIVELY SIMPLE’ IS A PHRASE THAT GETS TOSSED AROUND QUITE LIBERALLY WHEN TALKING ABOUT BUILDING DESIGN, BUT IT’S TOO APT A TERM TO AVOID WHEN WE DESCRIBE MANY OF THE PROJECTS SHORTLISTED IN THIS YEAR’S SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS.
application of building management systems across building projects of every type, now better than ever at automating airflow openings, using monitor information to adjust heating/cooling, turn lights and water on and off, and more.
The performance qualities of these buildings are payoff for incredibly thoughtful responses by designers who have taken the effort to equip themselves with the best knowledge and skills for the job.
Another trend growing this year is public monitors displaying technical data such as the building’s energy usage to educate and influence user behaviour. We also see tri-generation systems emerging in large building projects, producing power onsite.
It’s not by chance, for instance, that a building’s windows and openings are situated to let in the ideal amount of natural light, and optimise fresh airflow or impact of the sun’s warmth in every season.
Meanwhile, manufacturers continue taking great strides, with products like self-adjusting glass tinting, super efficient heaters, and serious advances in both steel roofing and carpet production (page 43).
Various passive design aspects are one thing; at the other end of the spectrum we see the latest technology being put to use. There’s a world first in the Sir Samuel Griffith Centre which converts solar energy into hydrogen (page 41). Legion House employs a process whereby paper waste generated in nearby offices can be compressed into briquettes for use in an onsite gasification plant to power the carbon neutral building (page 33).
Equally important are the sophisticated new design techniques, such as more effective passive design afforded by new modelling technology, and the ability to design buildings with stormwater strategies in harmony with local natural hydrology, avoiding the need for pipes or other infrastructure.
Another world record was set by Forte, with the engineered cross laminated timber (CLT) building becoming the tallest residential apartment built out of the natural material (page 31). Then there’s the increasingly widespread PUBLISHER MARTIN SINCLAIR E-MAIL: MARTIN.SINCLAIR@CIRRUSMEDIA.COM.AU EDITOR DAVID WHEELDON E-MAIL: DAVID.WHEELDON@CIRRUSMEDIA.COM.AU
Others go so far as to design entire buildings ready to be recycled, remodelled, removed and reused (see Outpost page 35). There’s far too much more to fit in these pages, but you can find details and imagery on all 70 Finalists at Architecture & Design online (Type short URL: ow.ly/B46nr).

NEWS AUSTRALIA TAKES THE LEAD ON WORLD WAR WITH CO2 The war on CO2 has broken out, with the International Union of Architects (UIA) unanimously adopting the Durban Declaration 2050 Imperative, a commitment to environmental and social sustainability in construction.
“This provides an unprecedented opportunity to reduce fossil fuel CO2 emissions by setting the global building sector on a path to phase out CO2 emissions by 2050.
The historic declaration, which recognises the urgency of the UIA and its member organisations in committing to a truly sustainable and equitable future, states:
“We recognise our responsibility to seize this unique opportunity to influence ethical and socially responsible development throughout the world: to plan and design sustainable, resilient, carbon-neutral and healthy built environments that protect and enhance natural resources and wildlife habitats, provide clean air and water, generate on-site renewable energy, and advance more livable buildings and communities.”
“Urban areas are responsible for over 70 per cent of global energy consumption and CO2 emissions, mostly from buildings, and over the next two decades an area roughly equal to 60 per cent of the world’s total building stock is projected to be built and rebuilt in urban areas.
By adopting the 2050 Imperative, member organisations commit to advocacy and promotion pertaining to the planning and design of carbon neutral cities, towns, urban developments and new buildings; engaging in research and setting targets towards meeting the 2050 goal and developing and delivering

REVISED AUSTRALIAN STANDARD CHAIN OF CUSTODY ANNOUNCED The Australian Standard for Chain of Custody for forest products has been revised to ensure the traceability of wood or forest products originating from sustainably managed, certified forests through all phases of ownership, transportation and manufacturing to the end consumer. Consistent with international best practice, the revised Standard (AS 4707:2014) is based on the recently revised Programme for Endorsement of Forest
Certification (PEFC) Chain of Custody Standard (PEFC ST 2002:2013), with some modifications to suit Australian processes. It will help businesses in the wood and paper products sectors demonstrate that their products are sustainable, given the increasing interest from consumers about the source of wood products, as well as the requirements of the new illegal logging laws. The review was undertaken by an independent
Standards Reference Committee made up of experts and representatives from a broad range of stakeholders, including forest managers, wood processors, traders and wood/paper products customers. Certification bodies can continue to issue certificates against AS 4707:2006 until 31 December 2014. From 1 January 2015 all new Chain of Custody certificates must be issued against AS 4707:2014. Following the publication
of AS 4707:2014, existing certified clients may choose for their next scheduled audit to be audited against either AS 4707:2014 or AS 4707:2006. Transitions from AS 4707:2006 to AS 4707:2014 may occur during a surveillance audit. If the client chooses to be audited to AS 4707:2006 a transition plan must be discussed with the audit team and described in the audit report. All clients should comply with AS 4707:2014 by 31 December 2015.
ASTHMA COUNCIL URGES STANDARDS AUSTRALIA TO TAKE ACTION AGAINST WOOD HEATERS Asthma Foundation NSW has called on Standards Australia to impose a wood stoves emissions standard that will bring Australia in line with the rest of the world.
Protection Agency (EPA) which estimates wood heaters alone will add an additional $8 billion to the NSW health budget in the next 20 years.
Standards Australia is reviewing the current standards governing wood heaters for the first time in 20 years, following a damning report by NSW’s Environment
Michele Goldman, CEO of Asthma Foundation NSW, explains that wood smoke contains noxious gases as well as organic compounds and fine
particles that go deep into the lungs, causing heart problems, respiratory diseases and cancer. Scientific testing has also shown wood smoke to be more hazardous than cigarette smoke. Standards Australia is awaiting final approvals before making an announcement about the new standards for wood heaters.

READER COMMENT It would be extremely disappointing if Standards Australia’s committee updates their standards for wood heaters and ignores all the scientific evidence of the harm of woodsmoke that was submitted to them. Anything short of a full ban in residential areas will be not only a great disappointment, but a miscarriage of justice. MATT (A&D)

BRICKS & PAVERS
HOME-MADE INVENTION KEEPS FRANK GEHRY’S SYDNEY BRICK WALL FROM FALLING DOWN [WORDS] GERALDINE CHUA
I
N THE WEEKS FOLLOWING THE ARRIVAL OF THE FIRST FLEET IN JANUARY 1788, GOVERNOR ARTHUR PHILLIP HAD ALREADY ENVISAGED THAT SYDNEY COVE AND ITS ENVIRONS WOULD, IN TIME, BE BUILT IN BRICK. He probably did not expect that two hundred years later, Sydney would welcome a new public building that will use the ancient product in a completely new and unconventional way. The first Australian project by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the University of Technology, Sydney’s (UTS) Dr Chau Chak Wing Business School has been the talk of the town since plans were unveiled in 2010. The building features two distinct external facades, one composed of large, angled sheets of glass, and the other of undulating brick referencing the dignity of Sydney’s urban brick heritage. “The brick will be set in horizontal courses and will step or corbel to create the shape. The texture of the surface will be rough and will emphasise the mass of the material. The shape flattens as it wraps around the north and south corners,” described Gehry. Much easier to imagine than create, finding a way to realise this complex structure was a mammoth task, although not an impossible one thanks to the creation of unique bricks and brick support system.
CUSTOMISED BRICKS Approximately 320,000 bricks are being laid by hand at the UTS building. Custom designed by Gehry and AECOM, five buff coloured brick ranges were selected following the creation of over 30 different brick façade prototypes across Australia. Each of these pressed bricks, manufactured at the Austral Bricks factory in Bowral, NSW, serve a specific function, and differ from standard brick designs. All brick faces, for example, were required to be visibly appealing as the curved and corbelled nature of the masonry façade reveals the
sides, base, top and front of the bricks to view.
IMAGES: JAMES STUART
The bricks also required individual vertical cuts at the perpends to ensure the mortar space between each brick remains even throughout. The ‘K Brick’ is another development. Shaped to appear as though it has been offset from the standard coursing, it assists in creating the required bends and shadowing. The brick support system was especially important too, with Stephen Giblett, Building Structures Lead at AECOM, the project’s structural and façade engineers, likening it to the “Ben Lexcen winged Keel” of the project: “The bricks are generally of a standard brick dimension but instead of having the standard indented ‘frog’, they have a continuous slot in the top which enables a continuous stainless steel rod to be inserted to connect the bricks horizontally and to be bedded into the brick continuously,” he says. The backing support system, a concept invented by AECOM, UTS and Austral, has provided a template for the bricklayers to work off in creating the curved geometry without measurement or stringlines.
CLIMBING FROM THE GARAGE TO THE TREE TOP However, developing bricks that are engineered to suit the façade’s curved and sharp angles was not the only challenge. Before the first brick could be laid, the team had to ensure that the overhanging bricks would not fall off – a major

hurdle as the brick wall steps out at over 27 degrees in some places. Standard construction with existing available tie systems proved woefully inadequate – mock-up testing had showed that the brick wall would collapse and become unstable after just four courses with wet mortar were applied.
RAY AND PETER FAVETTI INSPECTING THE BRICKWORK. IMAGE: ENCAPTURE
Interestingly, the solution to this problem was conceived in the garage of one of AECOM’s directors, who experimented with just bricks and threaded rod. “AECOM developed a tie system from scratch that had never been thought of before, enabling the brick wall to be built traditionally with up to 10 courses of wet mortar (the standard for normal masonry construction),” says Giblett. “The key innovation was a clip and tie system that held the bricks in place during construction while also providing the necessary tolerance to enable the complex curved geometry to be achieved.” In this custom ‘groove and bolt’ system, a plate goes on the back of brick when the brickwork I L 0 5 corbels 1 4 _ 0 in, 0 0holding _ D MF it from falling. The margin for
-
error is negligible, making the bricklaying job slower than usual. UTS also had to carry out extensive testing of the mortar, ties, bricks and full wall height mock-up panels with load and strain gauges before full scale construction commenced, especially since there was no existing Code or Standard that accommodated the extreme geometry and construction system the bricks have been subjected to.
set, and then pulling them apart. In another, a hydraulic jack has been used to apply as much as 290kg to the structure to test its stability under pressure. “We need to know that when a window cleaner abseils down the building that they’re not going to dislodge any bricks,” said senior project manager Brandon Bell.

Machined in a plethora of textures, patterns, shapes and designs, most metal ceilings used in Australian buildings are made from electrogalvanised steel or aluminium. Their most common application is in a suspended grid system with rectangular clip-in or lay-in boards, although metal’s resistance to warping and sagging means they can be suspended in a variety of profiles and angles, such as rhomboid and triangular shapes. Metal pan ceilings are also the go-to product for architects when designing buildings with a chilled beam system, and have been used in award winning projects such as Commonwealth Bank Place at the Darling Quarter Precinct in Sydney by Francis-Jones Morehen Thop architects (FJMT) as well as Number 1 Bligh Street, Sydney by Architectus + Ingenhoven. Sean McPeak from FJMT was the director of the Darling Quarter project and said his decision to choose metal ceilings — a variety of perforated tiles from SAS International — over other options such as mineral fibre
boards and timber tiles, was based on their compatibility with a chilled beam system, and their durability and sleek appearance. With advice from leading architects and ceiling experts, we’ve compiled a guide to metal ceilings that includes their benefits, applications and limitations, and where you can get them in Australia.
THE BENEFITS OF METAL CEILINGS
Metal ceilings are the most commonly used ceiling on the market to facilitate this system.
Chilled beam systems Buildings with a passive chilled beam such as the Commonwealth Bank Place (pictured) depend on the convection of warm air rising through the ceiling, circulating the chilled beam and then dropping back down through the ceiling as cold air.
Maintenance and longevity Metal ceilings in a clip-in suspended system (see guide to types of ceiling) can withstand upwards cleaning pressure and be hosed down without causing damage to the tile or grid.
Naturally, this air contains a lot of moisture so there is a requirement that the ceiling be both perforated for the air to pass through as well as impervious to moisture damage.
Because of their strong composition, metal pan tiles can be taken down, moved and replaced in office reconfigurations without ensuing damage.
Most manufacturers also create boards in a range of perforation sizes to facilitate areas, such as the perimeter zone of buildings, where heat gain and air convection is higher and perforations need to be larger.
It is also a perception amongst some architects that metal ceiling tiles are more durable than other products and will outlast mineral fibre tiles.
Conversely, in areas where there is a low level of heat gain, such as the middle of the floor plate, perforations can afford to be much smaller.
Visual appearance Metal ceiling tiles are chosen by architects for their superior visual performance and commercial aesthetic. They are also commonly used in foyers as features rather than throughout the entire building to save money.
LIMITATIONS Acoustic performance: Without the aid of an acoustic insulation backing pad, metal ceilings have no acoustic value and aren’t suitable for areas where privacy between rooms is necessary. Manufacturers have created composite products to address this but they are more expensive and fail under the sustainability subject of dematerialisation — using fewer materials to achieve the same outcome. Light reflectance Heavily perforated metal tiles don’t have the light reflectance that a mineral fibre tile has (about 90 per cent). More traditional lighting is therefore needed to illuminate the room. Price In some cases, Paul McDonald from Armstrong Ceilings says metal ceilings can cost three times more than a mineral fibre board and are more expensive to replace.

VARIATIONS There are hundreds of variations of metal pan ceiling tiles, but in their simplest form there are three main types of grid systems that are commonly worked from — the lay-in, clip-in and hook-on. Lay-in ceiling tiles have a fully exposed grid and are the most common product for standard office buildings. Tiles are simply placed on a T-shaped runner, generally between 10 and 25mm, and can be easily installed and demounted as individual tiles. Applications include places that require consistent maintenance and access to ceiling void, including offices and buildings with chilled beam systems.
Clip-in ceiling tiles clip on to the suspended grid and therefore conceal the grid from view. Manufacturers have their own unique clip-in systems that
match their boards but generally they all consist of a spring tee runner from which boards clip on to. Applications include food preparation areas and hospitals where cleanliness is important and tiles are frequently cleaned and hosed down. They are also commonly used in airport and transport hubs. Hook-on systems attach to a suspended J or Z suspension rail and can be hung in a variety of square, rectangular, trapezoidal and triangular shapes. They are a concealed system that is not fixed and removable with a special tool so tiles can be lifted out and ceiling voids accessed relatively easily. The hook-on system affords easier access to ceiling plenums than clip-on systems but still has the same aesthetic features. They see consistent use in transport hubs and retail stores.
COMO BUILDING PRODUCTS
Como Building Products supply aluminium and steel tiles with a standard polyester powder coat or a finish of choice. Their stainless steel tiles are brushed, bright annealed or even coloured stainless and embossed. Their entire range, which includes lay-in, hook-on, clip-in and variations, can be customised to suit most projects. SAS INTERNATIONAL
SAS International’s metal ceilings are available in a variety of tile sizes and shapes to accommodate specific design requirements. They supply metal pan tiles for clip-in, lay-in and linear grid systems and will be supplying over 200,000sqm of metal ceiling tiles for Sydney’s Bangaroo South project. SAS International is the first ceiling manufacturer to have its products accredited with a green tag and provide a minimum 25-year product life cycle expectancy.
ARMSTRONG
CEILECTOR CEILING SOLUTIONS (CSR)
Armstrong’s 150-year history is originally built on mineral ceiling tiles but its MetalWorks systems have proven equally successful of late. Armstrong metal ceilings have been specified for large-scale architecture projects including the Woods Bagot designed NAB Docklands, Melbourne (pictured) and the Emporium Shopping Mall, Melbourne by The Buchan Group.
Two of the key options Ceilector offers is a clip-in option with a concealed grid system, which requires a 600x600mm clip-in tile, and a lay-in option with exposed aluminium grid, also known as the Fricker easy access system. All products are available with an acoustic fleece if required and perforation sizes are available from 1.5mm through to 76mm.
Armstrong says its success can be attributed to a combination of factors, including its innovative products and its service sector which is supported by their highly qualified technical specialists.
Ceilector Ceiling Solutions are backed by the CSR brand and manufactures the Fricker Aluminium Grid locally in Australia, which provides them with the opportunity to offer quicker turnaround times for the builder and contractor on site.

MODULAR CARPET TILES [WORDS] NATHAN JOHNSON
C
ARPET TILES ARE EASIER TO INSTALL, REPAIR AND REMOVE THAN TRADITIONAL BROADLOOM CARPETS, AND ARE BECOMING MORE SUSTAINABLE.
Recent improvements in carpet tiles have seen a new diversity in size, colours and textures as well as a movement towards more environmental practices from manufacturers and suppliers. From the beginning carpet tiles are easier to handle; they are flat packed in boxes and easily freighted on pallets which can fit in elevators; they are easier to carry; and are mostly less than 1sqm in size. Carpet tiles can also be installed live, meaning you don’t have to remove heavy furniture from the room when installing. Instead, you simply move it to one side and then back once the tiles have been laid. Another plus of modular carpets compared to broadloom is that they are easily removed and simple to replace, which means repairs or refurbishments do not require ripping up and re-laying an entire floor.
ABOVE: BOLON STUDIO RANGE IS A WOVEN TEXTILE ALTERNATIVE TO CARPET TILES BELOW: INTERFACE CARPET TILE, KATOOMBA LIBRARY. IMAGE: ROBERT WALSH
Carpet tiles outperform broadloom carpets in terms of longevity, particularly in areas with high foot traffic and areas where heavy trolleys are pushed around. In terms of design elements, the size and wide variety of carpet tiles afford colour flexibility, and according to Cecilia Kugler from CK Design International, are a great product to facilitate wayfinding on the floors of her projects. Nearly all Australian carpet tile manufacturers and suppliers are committed to improving their environmental footprint, and sustainability measures are being carried out, particularly in the manufacturing of the carpet tile backing. Manufacturers are now moving away from the high-VOC PVC backings of traditional carpet tiles to low VOC backings with a high recycled content. Recycled content is also being seen in the face yarn of some suppliers’
carpet tiles. Interface for example sources discarded fishing nets from poor fishing communities and recycles them to make the nylon yarn for their carpet tiles. The variety of modular carpet tiles available on the Australian market is astounding, and the task of choosing just one supplier can be daunting. The following list of Australian suppliers of modular carpet tiles is small, but spotlights both the distinguishing features of individual suppliers as well the performance of their products on a variety of measures including the Green Building Council of Australia’s (GBCA) GreenStar Materials performance tool.
KEY The Australian Carpet Classification Scheme (ACCS) is accredited by the Carpet Institute of Australia. It rates carpets according to their durability and appearance retention, placing them in categories and giving them a star rating on the advice from an expert panel.
PRODUCT REVIEW NET-EFFECT – INTERFACE
The Environmental Certification Scheme (ECS) further rates the carpet on a four tier system according to its environmental performance. The ECS also includes a banned list of chemicals and dyestuffs that cannot be used in an ECS rated carpet tile. Green Star—Performance assesses the operational performance of buildings, including its materials on a points scheme. It is recognised by the Green Building Council Australia (GBCA). GreenTag is a third party, green building product rating and certification system underpinned by Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) processes. Achieving a Level A GreenTag also achieves a 100 per cent on the GBCA GreenStar Materials performance tool.
Net-Effect from Interface recruits discarded fishing nets from poor fishing villages to create a 100 per cent recycled yarn modular carpet tile. It was a recent winner at the 2014 Good Design Awards. RATINGS:

DELIBERATE DESIGN AND ACCESSIBLE ARCHITECTURE
Shigeru Ban’s Cardboard Cathedral was built following the Christchurch, New Zealand, 2011 earthquake. It employs Ban’s signature material: cardboard. Photography by Stephen Goodenough, 2013. Ban is the 2014 laureate of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize. His jury citation recognises that for 20 years he has “been responding with creativity and high quality design to extreme situations caused by devastating natural disasters. His buildings provide shelter, community centers, and spiritual places for those who have suffered tremendous loss and destruction.”
[WORDS] WARREN MCLAREN
“
... BY CREATING WHOLE SPECIES OF PERMANENT GARBAGE TO CLUTTER UP THE LANDSCAPE, AND BY CHOOSING MATERIALS AND PROCESSES THAT POLLUTE THE AIR WE BREATHE, DESIGNERS HAVE BECOME A DANGEROUS BREED.” This is just one of the acerbic opinions that Victor Papanek wrote in his seminal book ‘Design for the Real World’. How is it that a book so scathing of designers has been in continuous publication for the past 43 years, and translated into 23 languages? How did an author so forthright in his negative view of the design profession end up Professor of Architecture and Design at the University of Kansas? (After all the first sentence of his book reads, “There are professions more harmful than industrial design, but only a few of them.”) Might it be that Papanek, who once studied architecture under Frank Lloyd Wright, had touched a raw nerve? That he articulated what many designers and architects knew to be true? “Man knows so much and does so little,” was how one of Papanek’s contemporaries, Buckminster Fuller expressed it. We can certainly ‘do’. That is not up for dispute. But can we ‘do more’? It is relatively easy to design bright and shiny artefacts, grand pieces of ‘art-itecture’. So much harder to ‘design for the real world’; to create buildings and products that improve the lives for the majority of humanity. Let’s look at some sobering statistics. According
to a 2014 UNICEF report, even after a concerted effort “748 million people - mostly the poor and marginalised - still lack access to an improved drinking water source,” while 14 per cent of humankind lacks any access to toilets. The UN reports the world slum population should reach 889 million by 2020. Such data highlights the scope available for the design fraternity to apply its amazing talent in creativity and problem solving for the betterment of others.
DESIGN MATTERS However we can ‘Design Like You Give A Damn’, as Cameron Sinclair and Kate Stohr titled their 2006 book about the projects of Architecture for Humanity, an organisation they founded in 1999, born with a simple idea: ‘that designers could use their skills and passions to literally change the world’. Now 15 years on, that simple idea has spawned 59 Chapters over 16 countries including Australia, having contributed kindergartens, schools, community centres, housing markets, sports facilities and the like in about 50 countries. In 2012 the Australian branch of RedR (Register of Engineers for Disaster Relief) celebrated 20 years of humanitarian action. Over those two decades, they’ve deployed over 700 people to 75 countries. RedR was founded in 1980 by British engineer, Peter Guthrie, who saw a pressing need for his fellow practitioners “who could be called upon at short notice to work with frontline relief agencies.”
By 1989, the not-for-profit Society for Responsible Design (SRD) was established in Sydney, and two years later, the EcoDesign Foundation came along. Both would eventually merge their activities under the SRD name. As the world’s oldest surviving eco-design organisation, the SRD is still disseminating information on environmentally and socially responsible design. Other like-minded initiatives have sprouted up along the way. In 1995 Japanese architect Shigeru Ban established the Voluntary Architects’ Network to organise post-disaster aid in the field of construction. In 1999 Builders without Borders started up as “an international network of ecological builders who advocate the use of natural, local, and affordable materials in construction.” In the same year Architects Without Frontiers - Australia came to life, after Esther Charlesworth led a group of Melbourne University design students to post-conflict Bosnia-Hertzegovina.

In 2001 Emergency Architects France (Architectes de l’Urgence) formed, with an Australian office of EA operating between 2005 and 2013. This year Emergency Architects was awarded the International Union Architects’ Vassilis Sgoutas Prize for “serving the most impoverished and for the conception of inventive solutions for reducing poverty and indigence.” (Australian architect Anna Rubbo, founder of Global Studio, received an honourable mention for her humanitarian work.) Habitat for Humanity is the “world’s number one not-for-profit provider of housing for low-income families living in poverty.” They’ve built almost 600,000 houses, sheltering more than three million people in over 3,000 communities. HfH is anchored by the conviction that safe, affordable housing provides a critical foundation for breaking the cycle of poverty. Supported families contribute 500 hours of ‘sweat equity’, becoming intimately involved in constructing their own home. Once they have paid off their interestfree loan it is transferred to another family in need. Whilst over 100 homes have been built locally, most of HfH Australia’s work is in the Asia Pacific region.
Health program. Their comprehensive online guide, housingforhealth.com, provides solutions to achieving the Healthy Living Practices for all built environment professionals from specification and documentation through to quality control and maintenance. Barefoot Power is an Australian company that produces micro solar energy solutions to “help low income families break their dependence on inefficient, expensive and harmful light sources by giving them cleaner and cheaper options” (pictured right). In 2013 they scored an Intersolar Award for their work in developing a solar-powered LED tube light solution, with the appropriate light spectrum, for weavers in India to work at their hand-looms. Ross Langdon too was recognised for his work on humanitarian, aid and public projects, particularly in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and Kenya, where he recently completed an AIDS hospital. The Australian Institute of Architects awarded Ross their 2014 National President’s Prize, citing his work as being notable for its community engagement and use of recycled and upcycled materials. Alas, the award was presented posthumously, as Ross and his pregnant partner were killed in that horrific terrorist attack on a Nairobi shopping centre last year.
The Housing for Health process aims to assess, repair or replace ‘health hardware’, so that houses are safe and the occupants have the ability to carry out healthy living practices. Developed in the 1980s However, Ross’s award, like that of the people and in South Australia by Healthabitat in conjunction organisations noted above, should telegraph to with local Aboriginal Health Service, they set out designers and architects that they need not be just to maximise community health gains, particularly another ‘brick in the wall’; that deeply fulfilling for children aged 0-5 years. THE GOLDILOCKS PRINCIPLE OF SLIP RESISTANT FLOORING [WORDS] GERALDINE CHUA
S
TICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK YOUR BONES…BUT SLIPS AND FALLS CAN TOO, SO SPECIFYING FLOOR PRODUCTS THAT COMPLY WITH APPROPRIATE SLIP RESISTANCE LEVELS IS PARAMOUNT. But, what exactly are the most appropriate slip resistance levels?
FIBONACCI STONE’S PLATINUM HONED BAMBRA ROAD
“Most of the problems we have seem to revolve around people assuming that more slip resistance is better, but too much slip resistance can be worse,” says Intertile Research’s managing director Richard Bowman.
BRISBANE CITY HALL RESTORATION. PHOTOGRAPHY BY LACHLAN ROWE
“It is important that one gets it just right – not too slippery, and not too slip resistant.” Bowman terms this idea of specifying floors that are ‘just right’ the ‘Goldilocks Principle’, saying that greater slip resistance might not be the most effective panacea. For example, surfaces that have higher slip resistance than recommended may be so rough that it induces falls, which could result in potential injury and abrasions. ‘Over-resistance’ can also introduce cleaning challenges, which affects the floor’s hygiene. Slip hazard is influenced by a range of factors, including the nature and function of the surface; its wear characteristics; footwear or lack of; maintenance requirements; the presence of slopes; and environmental conditions such as exposure to water. For instance, a coarse, slip resistant limestone will get worn smooth by traffic and eventually become slippery. Proper maintenance and cleaning of the product is therefore essential to prolonging the slip resistance of the flooring. At the same time, it can help to fulfil other ‘Duty of Care’ requirements, such as preventing the risk of infections due to poor hygiene or lack of cleaning. With all these contributing elements, getting slip resistance right is invariably a complex issue. Tanner Kibble Denton Architects is one practice that has addressed the challenge of specifying floors that are truly safe for pedestrians in their Brisbane City Hall Restoration project . “The slip rating of the new marble floor finishes was difficult to confirm even though it had been specifically detailed in the tender documents,” practice director Megan Jones said, adding that the specified natural Carrara tiles were required to have a slip resistance compliant to AS/NZS 4586.
STANDARDS UPDATES The Australian slip resistance standards AS 4586 (slip resistance classification of new pedestrian surface materials) and AS 4663 (existing pedestrian surfaces) are the main
benchmarks for the industry. However, updates were made in June 2013 which affect how products are being tested. AS/ NZS 4586:2013 specifies four test methods to determine the slip resistance of products:
• Wet Pendulum Slip Resistance Test – P-rating: the test foot is now conditioned using a polishing film, which is a closer representation of a worn and polished heel; • Dry Floor Friction Slip Resistance Test – D-rating: no significant changes except for classification categories. D0 is used for surfaces measuring a Coefficient of Friction less than 0.40 and D1 for surfaces with a Coefficient equal to or greater than 0.40; • Wet Barefoot Ramp Slip Resistance Test – A, B, C rating: no significant changes; • Oil Wet Ramp Slip Resistance Test – R-rating: An inclining platform assesses the slip resistance of the material, with the test determining the angle of inclination at which safe walking no longer occurs on the test surface. Measurements now allow for the use of brand Uvex shoes and new ST version of calibration boards in addition to the same shoes and test panels as the 2004 version.
Michael Karakolis, Fibonacci Stone’s director, explains that these changes in testing have resulted in the need for new classifications coding that makes it clear that products meet the new standard. It has also meant that it is now harder to get a high slip resistance rating. “When we regard a new surface this means that designers need to check products still meet the requirements for the environment they are specifying,” Karakolis adds. Carl Strautins of the Safety Institute of Australia advises architects and designers to assess flooring to HB 198, which was released in June this year. “HB 198:2014 sets out the parts of the Building Code of Australia now known as the National Construction Codes that require slip ratings in certain circumstances. It also outlines how to comply with the BCA,” notes Strautins. An ongoing revision of a more comprehensive document HB 197 is being undertaken and the standing of either or both handbooks will be decided at a later date.

HealthGuard antimicrobial treatment protects the floor surfaces against the development of yeasts, moulds, algae and bacteria. An additional slip resistant treatment option for Kradal Tiles, the Dr Schutz PU Sealer Antislip, can be used to form a hard-wearing sealant film of durability. The PU sealant also reduces bacterial growth because of hermetically sealed joints.

PRODUCT SHOWCASES EXPERT DRAINAGE SOLUTIONS TAILORED FOR THE AGED CARE INDUSTRY The benefits that a lineal solution can bring over centralised drainage solutions for today’s Aged Care facilities are numerous. Unlike conventional drainage solutions, lineal designs conform to the strict accessibility requirements of the AS-1428, whilst ensuring superior drainage flow. Lineal drainage solutions are designed to work with a single gradient fall, they remove the necessity of the hob, allowing seamless and self-sufficient access for residents (for e.g. including those using wheelchairs, walkers and frames), eliminating dangerous trip hazards. Lineal drainage solutions are also designed to eliminate traditional barriers and expand the area of drainage. With less need for a carer to assist entry, residents are offered more personal access into the shower space. Stormtech’s vinyl clamp (providing a screw down flange to mechanically clamp the vinyl beneath), offers seamless integration into vinyl floor surfaces commonly found in care settings.

MAKING BIG STATEMENTS IN SMALL SPACES WITH ECOPLY In small projects – you need to think of every detail. This was the philosophy behind the creation of Orchard Studio by Branch Studio Architects. The project measures in at less than 40 m2 and the use of ECOply as ceiling and wall lining, and joinery material makes a big statement. When conceptualising the Orchard Studio, Architect Brad Wray found inspiration in old rural sheds from childhood country trips. This resulted in the use of found, discarded, corrugated iron sheets as the exterior cladding, complete with flaking paint. But inside, Wray knew he wanted to use plywood to clad the ceiling, floor and some walls to add warmth and ensure a bold contrast to the exterior. Wray explained that he chose ECOply CD Grade because, ‘we wanted the knots and the grain. It feels robust and raw. Hoop pine would be too crisp, too refined.’ Wray’s love of timber is also evident in the joinery that was laser-cut to size, leaving a black burned edge that accentuates the layering of the ply. As demonstrated in the Orchard Studio, attention to sustainability is core to the practice. And ECOply has the credentials to meet these needs – manufactured by Carter Holt Harvey using timber sourced from renewable plantation forests and an ‘A’ Bond with the equivalent of Super E0 formaldehyde emissions. It’s also lightweight and extremely durable. The ply was used in full sheet form to reduce wastage and labour. In small spaces it’s this kind of forward thinking that makes the space work harder.

Our Australian hot summers make us fully aware of the dangers of bushfire seasons give us an awareness and understanding of major building loss through these potential fires. Most houses destroyed in bushfires in fact survive the passing of the fire only to burn down later from embers and debris borne on the wind. Trend Windows & Doors have the first window and door system tested by the CSIRO to withstand temperatures up to 40kWm². Trend’s Xtremes window system helps prevent internal ignition of houses and possible loss of precious possessions. ARCHITECTUREANDDESIGN.COM.AU/PRODUCTS
