Hip homeware with a Japanese twist Hipster homeowners can now bring the Kinfolk aesthetic into their homes, with the debut of the Ouur collection at atomi. TEXT REDZMAN RAHMAT

There’s no denying that Singaporeans love all things Japanese, evident in the proliferation of Japanese restaurants, cafes, fashion brands and trends that have infiltrated pop culture. One of the biggest purveyors of the Japanese aesthetic is design stalwart atomi, having introduced many exclusive Japanese brands to the Singapore market. Over the years, atomi has won over fans with its curated collection of furniture, homeware, fashion and accessories. The Ouur collection – an exclusive collaboration between lifestyle magazine Kinfolk and Japanese interiors brand Actus – is the newest brand to join the atomi line-up. Outside of Japan, Singapore is the only other country to retail this seasonal line of apparel and homeware. The first Ouur collection launched in 2013, underscoring a design that emphasises simplicity and a sense of timelessness. As such, the products under the Ouur brand name are defined by classic shapes, lasting quality and neutral colour palettes that adapt to multiple environments. Currently, the collection is available as a limited edition exclusive, but atomi plans to bring new collections as they are introduced in Japan. There are 21 items available – including a desktop organiser set, matching notebooks, artisanal tableware made from Hasami porcelain and a ceramic coffee press – waiting to find a place in your Instagram-ready, Kinfolk-style home. An Actus standalone store is slated to open in Singapore early next year. Taking cues from some of Japan’s minimalist retail spaces/cafes, atomi plans to bring the “slow life” concept to Singapore’s notoriously hectic landscape.

mugs, to leather pouches and wallets, the Ouur collection stands for a simple and natural way of living. We speak to Andrew Tan, owner of Japanese lifestyle store atomi, to find out more about the Ouur collection.

How does the collection fit with atomi’s design beliefs? The Ouur collection we carry at atomi are products designed and produced by Kinfolk magazine and Actus in Japan. At atomi, we dedicate ourselves to bringing in exclusive brands and products that [complement] our vision of bringing Japanese designs and a comfortable lifestyle. From stationery items such as notebooks and pencil sets, to lifestyle items like ceramic coffee presses and

Which is your favourite item in the collection It has to be the colour pencil set with 36 “Japanese Standard Colours”. It comes in a beige case, and has both basic colours and unique shades like Vandyke Brown, Prussian Blue and Mandarin Orange. The pencils are made of hard, yet smooth, writing leads by Japanese artisanal crafts. As an Arts student, colour pencils are one of my favourite mediums, and this set brings back memories of how far I’ve come since then. Even as a Finance major in university, I continued to use colour pencils to take notes.

How do you think Singapore will react to the Ouur collection? Kinfolk is a well-known brand globally, especially within the design industry, and therefore it has an international influence. It’s one of the purveyors of the idea of the “slow life”. Combined with the Japanese’s sense for design and the aesthetic touch, we believe there is a potential to do well. Prices range from $33 to $340, and this is just the start. We plan to bring in new items ever season to appeal to Singaporeans.

OUT OF THE ORDINARY

Looking for well-designed furniture, lighting and accessories? Head to The Beuro for a refreshing range of home furnishings that you won’t find anywhere else. TEXT JOSEPH LIM

When it comes to furnishing the home, most Singaporeans end up going to same old shops and buying the same furniture. If you’re tired of pedestrian brands and ubiquitous finds, then it’s time to extend your search to boutique stores like The Beuro. The spacious 11,000-sqft showroom at Tan Boon Liat Building offers a world-sourced view of furniture and lighting accessories. With several zones styled to look like living spaces, dining areas and sleeping sanctuaries, you may feel as if you’ve just sauntered into someone else’s abode. Yes, one should thank their on-house visual merchandisers who have carefully created recognisable homely ambiances to display these items. The showroom’s airiness – all thanks to its large windows that draw in filtered light – conveys an onpoint ‘industrial chic’ theme. Shopping for furniture at The Beuro becomes experiential and engaging, and you might forget that you’re even in a shop! But what sets The Beuro apart from other retailers is its knack for sourcing for finely

designed yet under-the-radar furniture brands from all over the world. Take the Thomas Bina collection for example, with its range of eco-conscious, reclaimed wood furniture, or Italy-based Loop & Co and its luxurious upholstered sofas. These are just some of the internationally sourced brands that have found a home in The Beuro. Driven by a passion to bring good design to Singapore, The Beuro’s experts put their 30 years of combined experience in the furniture trade, to good use. Their knowledge allows them to engage with brand owners who are equally passionate about what they do. A global view on brands, as well as an immaculate attention to design details, has given this furniture showroom the opportunity to introduce a host of highly sought-after international brands and their range of future-classics.

Visit The Beuro at 315 Outram Road, #03-09/10 Tan Boon Liat Building. www.thebeuro.com

UP-CLOSE WITH OWNER AND MANAGING DIRECTOR OF THE BEURO, HADI NISHABURI. What’s your favourite brand in the showroom? Frag is definitely my favourite because it’s one of the leading Italian brands in leather furniture. Their expertise spans across 80 years and the details in each piece are stunning. They take pride in what they do, whether it’s a small side table or a large dining table.

Tell us more about representing designer Thomas Bina in Singapore. Thomas Bina is a man who respects the environment. He has a great sense of

proportion and is very creative with the different types of wood he sources from around the globe. He gives these materials a second life and puts them to good use in today’s context. He’s really a genius.

What’s your favourite piece of furniture at home? I believe a good armchair is paramount. It gives you a sense of comfort. An armchair can also be a statement piece in a decorative sense, aside from its practicality.

How do you add a personal touch when styling your home? Many people don’t realise that carpets can help to tie in the look. It should not be an afterthought. The carpets that we have in The Beuro are made by Iranian artisans and take years to complete, especially the large ones. Carpets create zones in the home and can soften the look of hard, cold floors. Their intricate designs and colours can also blend into many interior and furniture styles. It’s a must-have accessory to own. I like to think of carpets as artwork for the floor.

hen it’s time to renovate the home, many of us pore through magazines and websites in search of design ideas that we can share with our interior designers. With hours spent researching and studying, it might even feel like we become self-declared experts in the field of design. Shawn Chen and Joyce Lee however, bucked this trend. The young couple adopted a more laidback approach, allowing the design of their 3-bedroom condominium apartment to come about more fluidly and in a more intuitive manner.

The patio stretches across the length of the apartment, starting from the living room, past the study, and ending next to the master bedroom. To emphasise the length of the space, the designers paved the floor with monochromatic tiles that feel good underfoot. It also sets the scene for a romantic al fresco dining area. (Tray from Affordable Style Files) Top right: The choice of colours remains pared down, with black, white and a pinkish shade of taupe taking centre stage. The black laminates on the bar feature also make an appearance on the kitchen island counter.

“If it were up to us, we would have just left everything to the interior designer,” Shawn readily admits. The couple preferred a hands-off approach and allowed designer Lee Pei Zhen from The Scientist to direct the entire project. “We had a general idea of what we wanted our home to look like, and once we had conveyed our direction to Pei Zhen, we would have been happy to just leave it up to them. But along the way, we started to get more involved and we began to enjoy the process,” adds Joyce. It all started with a Chesterfield sofa that the couple bought. Immediately the trendy duo knew that this is the look that they wanted to have in their home. “We love its masculine look. It has a classic vibe that we know will remain timeless.” If it’s a style that has been around this long, they rationalised, then it’s a look that will continue to stay relevant over the years.

LOOKBOXLIVING.COM.SG | 63

“A lot of homes are going for the same type of look, so we wanted to do something different. It’s a bit more lush, a bit older, but still timeless. We like the classic look and it matches our personality pretty well,” says Joyce, explaining their decision. From the iconic sofa, Shawn, Joyce and designer Pei Zhen defined a look, describing it as a “cigar and whiskey bar kind of feel”. The main feature in this home is, undoubtedly the bar that’s integrated into the tall, double-volume cabinet in the living room. Capitalising on the height of the apartment, the designers customised an impressive wall-to-wall storage system in matt black laminates with gold inlays. “It makes a ‘wow’ statement, doesn’t it? It crossed our mind to build a bookcase here but we’re not avid readers. But we do enjoy drinking wine and whiskey, so it naturally became the purpose of the space,” says Shawn and Joyce. With an open bar in place, designer Pei Zhen wanted to transform the rest of the apartment into party central.

The bar area, dry kitchen, living room and patio all sit on the same plane, and can easily accommodate more than 30 guests. The patio in particular has been converted into an al fresco dining room, separated from the apartment proper by sliding glass doors and red, velvety draperies. “We like how the indoors and outdoors flow together, and it adds a bit of drama to the space,” they say. The couple also points out that the tiles on the patio floor add texture while visually defining the dining area. For a couple that would have preferred to remain as uninvolved as possible in the renovation journey, Shawn and Joyce ended up contributing heavily to certain design decisions. “The designer wanted us to take ownership of our home,” explains Shawn, “and as it turns out, we’re grateful that they included us in the creative process. It feels good to have a say in how the place turned out.” As an example, he pointed to the chandeliers in the living room. “We chose the chandeliers and helped to pick out furniture like the coffee table and TV console.”

Left: “Modular and minimal”, is how the owners describe this study room. They wanted to keep the purpose of the space as flexible as possible, in case they needed to convert it into a guest room or a kid’s room. (Planter from Affordable Style Files) Top: In keeping with the owners’ active lifestyle, one of the spare rooms is now a home gym. Wall-towall mirror panelling complements the narrow space.

DESIGN NOTES Take your interior design cues from the type of furniture you love. In this home, the decision to go for a masculine English vibe started with the tufted Chesterfield sofa.

The paint colours and material choices are other examples of how Shawn and Joyce left their mark in their home’s interior design. The living room in particular, stands out with walls that have a pink tinge to it. Initially, the couple wanted something darker to suit the masculine vibe they were after, but the design team made them realise that the rose-tinted colour contrasts perfectly with the jet-black bar setup. “It was quite eye-opening to see what a good interior designer can do. Even if we had an idea, we couldn’t execute it without someone to guide us,” says Shawn. “It’s all the little details and quality of life changes that we could never catch. There are a lot of pleasant surprises along the way, and we couldn’t be happier.”

hen asked to describe the look of this 22-year-old resale apartment, interior designer Joey Khu labels it as the “modern cottage”. It’s a design concept that’s uncommon and not quite easy to grasp, but it becomes the underlying theme for the newly renovated home at Bukit Timah. Inspiration struck the team from Joey Khu Interior Design when they noted the homeowners’ love for the cosy and rustic home style. In fact, one of the reasons why the owners bought this apartment is the pitched roof that reminds them of traditional cottage homes from the West. “We were awed by the 6.5-metre ceiling and that pretty much sealed the deal for us.” While the warm and lived-in aesthetics of cottages appeal to the homeowners, the married couple also wanted to provide a nest for their two young sons to grow up in. “Being practical folks, they didn’t care much for fleeting interior trends or fashion-conscious designs,” says the designers. “All they wanted is a home to raise their kids comfortably.” Following these requests, the design team put a modern spin to a traditional style, introducing contemporary touches that streamline the rustic elements. The result? A future-proof home that can continue to grow together with the family. Joey reveals that renovating this lofty apartment came with its fair share of challenges. Somewhat ironically, the pitched roof turned out to be as much an obstacle as it was an inspiration. Joey says, “The rafters and beams were previously hidden behind a false ceiling, so we took

that down to showcase the double-volume height and the angled pitch. We wanted to highlight this design feature even further so we designed three massive cast iron frames to replicate its form.” Before the cast iron frames could be mounted onto the ceiling, they had to seek approval from the authorities to go ahead. That took a few rounds of changes and some time before they got the greenlight. The results speak for themselves, as the home looks and feels brighter and more spacious. The dining space in particular, embraces this architectural feature. Joey played down the design, allowing the pitched roof detail to do all the talking. One noteworthy feature here however, is the serving station that overlooks the semi-enclosed kitchen. The custom-built hole-in-the-wall wasn’t just designed to draw in more light; it frames the scenery of lush foliage outside the kitchen like a picture of calm. “That way, the homeowners can enjoy the greenery while dining,” say the designers. “And should they choose to turn this serving station into a bar counter, they can do so by adding a few barstools.”

DESIGN NOTES Personalising the space and introducing colour into the warm neutral colour scheme are selective decorative accents. A series of pop art visuals by American artist Roy Lichtenstein and a Thomas Sabo Skull Robot figurine add much visual interest.

Opposite: Amidst the woody textures, a large black-and-white photography canvas anchors the dining area. The design elements here have been downplayed as the designers wanted to keep the limelight on the living area. On its left, a sliding door in a textured laminate finish demarcates the kitchen and prevents heavy cooking smells from overwhelming the communal zones.

DESIGN NOTES

Instead of leaving the storage niche of the mirror cabinet bare, fill it up with a hanging lamp and let its warm glow illuminate the alcove. Resembling natural stones with its faux veining patterns, the homogeneous wall and floor tiles bring a touch of luxe.

Below: Tribal patterns on the bedside table stand out against the laminate wall covering with a grainy finish and a woven bedside lamp from BoConcept. Sporting a darker woodgrain texture, the simple bed frame from Commune adds some modern lines without overwhelming the senses.

In the kitchen proper, the walls are clad with blue subway tiles sporting a gorgeous matt texture. To temper this distinctive colour, the team left the top portion of walls bare. A black trimming embellishes the walls as well and acts as a visual marker between the blue tiles and white hue. Small but impactful style accents accentuate the modern cottage aesthetics in the cookspace. A brass barn light creates a delightful vignette that allows the kitchen to look less utilitarian and more characterful. The homeowners also splurged on a $10,000 freestanding cooker from high-end Italian kitchen range brand Bertazzoni. Its sizzling shade of red was specifically chosen to amplify the colour contrast against the blue subway tile backsplash. Speaking of contrasts, the smooth metallic façade of the two-door refrigerator is neatly flushed against the textured blue tiles and the two hues create quite a visual stir. The designers elaborate: “We went with a wall niche rather than the common way of having custom-built cabinetry to house the fridge.” Cosy and chic, the master bedroom showcases a carefully balanced measure of woody and contemporary elements. Laminate panels with dark woodgrain patterns fill up part of the wall behind the bed frame and create a warmlooking backdrop. The rest of the walls are swathed with cabinetry in a modern neutral colour scheme. While the custom-built fixtures offer mostly storage solutions for

clothing and other bedroom essentials, it also conceals the entrance to the en suite bathroom. “These two adjacent walls are the only areas we could build in an L-shaped wardrobe for ample storage, and leaving a gaping hole for the bathroom entrance would be a no-go,” say the designers. Therefore, having this uniformed treatment of white cabinetry with grey trimmings brings a soothing and fluid flow of aesthetics to the space. A cottage style can be heavy on the use of woody elements so it’s easy to get carried away when piecing together this charming rustic look. The potential catastrophe of wood overload was however, smoothly averted by the Joey Khu design team with understated materials and the neutralising application of contemporary aesthetics.
