These trendsetting style gurus offer advice on easy ways to style up a space. The task? Show off their skills with either a shadowbox moodboard or an Instagram-ready vignette. As the owner of lifestyle brand Egg3, Mike Tan is adept at arranging things to make them look good together. With a wallpapered background, lush greenery and choice furniture and accessories, Mike turned a simple nook into this stylish alcove. “You don’t need to do much to make a statement,” he says. “Just pay attention to proportion, depth and texture!”
Picking a single design for the shadowbox project was a challenge for Rekha Roeshini. “There are so many things about our store that I want to include in the design,” she says. As a solution, she created a replica of the storefront in the form of a diorama. Cardboard cut-outs of the Dreamweave store were painstakingly layered, with emphasis placed on signature brands Sika-Design, Tine K and Campomaggi.
Gone Green I like to bring greenery into a home. It adds freshness to any space and it brings zest to the ambience. Whether it’s potted plants or overhanging leaves, it’s a great way to introduce life into the home.
At Dreamweave, we like to have “breathable space”. That means furniture made with see-through materials like rattan, wicker and glass. The furniture blends in with the background and makes the space look bigger and less blocked in.

Clear As Crystal
We understand that some homeowners hesitate to use colours at home, but we believe you should have pops of colours in a room. If you prefer to play it safe, you can just stick to various shades of a single colour.
Wood and glassware complement each other well. Wood has beautiful textures and colours, and clear glass has a great way of magnifying its natural beauty. Glass containers or vases on a wood table will emphasise the grains and texture of the wood top.
Design is all about proportion, whether it’s a large scale interior renovation or just a small corner in the living room. For example, when buying vases, don’t get them all in the same height. Visual contrast is what separates the boring from the stylish.
A home shouldn’t look too organised, so you want to cluster your items. Group them by colours or textures to create an eye-catching display. Don’t be afraid to pick cushions with different patterns, sizes and shapes.

The experts weigh in
Track Of Time The timeline is very important for both the owner and the designers. We like to have a practical deadline that we can work towards and from there, we can design according to their needs.
Interview Process Finding the right designer to work with is like interviewing job applicants. Generally, you should only visit three interior design firms. Any more and you will get confused. Make your decision by picking a designer that can offer what you’re looking for. And make sure that there’s good chemistry between the two of you.
The Right Choice An interior designer can help you with things like space planning, colour selection and materials selection. A good designer will spend a lot of time with the clients to get to know them better. Going shopping for furniture and accessories together is an example. Even the smallest details, like the toilet roll holder, shouldn’t escape the designer’s inspection!

When Artistroom’s clients decided to shift into this Harbour View Towers apartment from their three-storey bungalow now that their kids were all grown up and moving away, they had a few items on their design wishlist. They wanted ample storage space to contain all the years of memories in their old house, room to entertain when they had friends and family over, and most importantly, a fresh and modern interior that they wouldn’t tire of.
Spatial Freshness The apartment works with a strict palette that includes light timber and touches of beige, and white. Other clever strategies have also been adopted, such as placing the sofa in the centre of the living area to make room for an additional ledge that doubles as both a place to display ornaments or additional seating when guests visit.

Chic Dining A timber trellis ceiling over the dining and living area is an easy and chic way to differentiate and anchor these communal spaces. Large format taupe wall tiles were used on selected walls to add definition to the dining area.
Naturally Ventilated Graced with large windows, the kitchen benefits from a steady flow of sunlight and fresh air. The subdued design of the cabinetry takes full advantage of these windows.
