In our 12th year of Indesign: The Event we find ourselves entering one of the most exciting phases of our evolution. And where better than Sydney, the place where it all started? This year Sydney Indesign really draws on the spirit of our local architecture and design community, taking you on a three-day journey of discovery that is rich in content. This year we present 20+ WorkLife, LiveLife Design Hunter® Series and DQ RoundTable seminars, not to mention launches galore with new, cutting edge product from our leading local and global brands, and unique demonstrations that will shift your perspective on product, space and design. The foundations of our event are firmly planted in the showroom space, where 12 years ago a small fleet of buses transported visitors around to a select few designer showrooms. Many of those Exhibitors and showrooms are still with us today, and we’re excited to team up with Sydney’s top design suppliers to bring you showroom and brand experiences that are beyond the everyday. Not to be missed is The Project, with Exhibitors with their creative collaborators teaming up to bring you an immersive interaction that will transform your favourite brands into a living, breathing experience. Indesign: The Event continues to be the region’s single most powerful platform for connecting designers, specifiers, suppliers, manufacturers and developers. We hope you will join us in building a strong, connected and inspired local design industry with global reach. We look forward to seeing you there!

Advertorial In 2012, Woven Image acquired three iconic Minnie Pwerle paintings and adapted these designs into an exclusive textile collection. In June 2015, Woven Image heralds the addition of seven new colours to the wildly successful Ritual Collection, based on Minnie’s original artworks. Proving once again that they are owning the nexus between art and design.

What happens when art mixes with design?

Woven Image is certainly no stranger to collaboration – in fact they are arguably the most collaborative working design house in Australia today. Having worked directly with the Dacou Aboriginal Gallery (who represent the late Minnie Pwerle), Woven Image continue to prove that design can in fact be art and vice versa. The Ritual collection represents a series

of Minnie’s painting with a design theme of freeflowing and parallel lines in a pendulous outline, depicting traditional body-painting designs used in women’s Aboriginal ceremonies. The seven additions to Ritual not only mean some added alternatives to the selection, they represent the immense value of pairing art with design. Here, meaningful cultural experiences can be appreciated by the user through art, alongside the clear and cut design emphasis on functionality. In this case, Woven Image continues to champion the task of bringing art and design together, and represents why the design industry should value industries outside of its own.

WorkLife

WorkLife explores the impact of design on our rapidly evolving workplace culture.

WorkLife is presented in partnership with our sponsors:

And event hosts: Cafe Culture + Insitu, Chairbiz, Herman Miller, iGuzzini, Interface, TCW, Viabizunno, Wilkhahn and Zenith-BuzziSpace.

In today’s evolving workplace, work is starting to look a bit like home, and home like work. So, what are the implications of this new-generation ‘blended’ approach to WorkLife? While agile working models appear to be serving the individual, offering flexibility and working ‘on your terms’, it still remains that technology overload and high productivity expectations are, increasingly, the main triggers of stress and burnout in workers. Solutions such as planned detours, gamification of furniture settings – even applications that track workers’ movements and seating – are all in play. But how effective and purposeful are these current strategies? Further still, how are designers and their clients using workplace design to engender better living and healthier habits in their employees? Responding to this need for happier, healthier, highly engaged workers is a growing demand for customised solutions that facilitate easy, quick personalisation of work spaces. Interior elements such as acoustics, lighting and materiality are rapidly evolving to better facilitate privacy, connectivity and personal comfort. As products push further into an area of ultimate customisability, and digital capabilities allow us to augment space and product ‘as we go’, what becomes the new frontier?

ABOVE FROM LEFT Gijs Nooteboom, Jacqui Esdaile, David Rolls. OPPOSITE Transgrid office, Sydney, by Bates Smart. Photo: Brett Boardman 10

The implications of this augmented-space approach are different for workers depending on generation, personality and working style. So, product solutions also need to be universal in their usability and appeal. Beyond this, how does designed space, new-think organisational structure and change management intersect to better facilitate collaboration and cross-fertilisation of ideas, mentorship and learning, and serve the happy worker?

The integration of technology into both building and operative structures allows for companies to gain quick, at-a-glance insights into how their employees work. The opportunities of such a transparent workplace are many, but it also raises concerns around privacy and personal control. Are we deploying smart technology and big data in a sensitive and efficient manner? And what role does design play in the integration and approach to technology at a structural level? We’re facing a period of incredibly fast-paced change. Agile working is very much the status quo of 21st Century business and the workplace. As concepts evolve and success stories abound, what are the future possibilities? Join us at Sydney Indesign for our WorkLife seminar series. Our program of panel discussions will see thought leaders come together with the local design industry to share their insights on designing workplaces and provoke lively, intelligent debate around contemporary workplace design. DQ RoundTable

What is really going on behind the scenes of Australian design? Friday 14 August, 5.00pm @ DesignByThem, 109 Shepherd St, Chippendale

Why is cross-industry collaboration so valued by Australian designers? Australians are leading the world in this trend to look outside of the traditional box and search for creative alternatives both in practice and in business. What may have started because of our lack of alternatives and geographic obscurity has turned Australian design into a rich cross-section of creative industry, fueled by collaboration and experimentation. Hosted by DesignByThem, panelists include: Richard Weinman, Woods Bagot; Joe Farage, Farage Clothing; Brenton Smith, Bates Smart; Sarah Gibson + Nick Karlovasitis, DesignByThem, and Rachel Oakley, Dulux.

Saturday 15 August, 10.00pm @ Whitehouse Institute of Design, (mezzanine) entry via Hill St, Surry Hills

What is the future of authentic Australian design? The replica issue isn’t going away. So how can we as a design community move forward and work around this in a commercially viable way? This is not a finger pointing exercise, but a constructive conversation and inclusive brain-storming sesh with some of the industry’s most tenacious authentic design icons. Hosted by Luxmy, panelists include: Priyanka Rao, Luxmy Furniture; Charles Wilson, Charles Wilson Design; Joe Snell, Snell Architects; Alan Boyd, Eames Expert; Raymond Scott, WORKSHOPPED and Kylie Murray, IP Australia.

Saturday 15 August, 12.00pm @ Own World, 5/50 Stanley St, Darlinghurst

How the hell do we balance creativity and business? Designers are often criticized for being too creatively focused and not business-minded enough. But being the rebels we are, Australian designers are artistic, business-orientated problem solvers to boot! But how the hell did we get like this? Panelists include: Tom Skeehan, Skeehan Studio; Adele Bates, Adele Bates Design; Emma Telfer, Open House Melbourne and Office for Good Design; Ben Warhlich, Anaesthetic; Ali McShane + Monika Branagan, The Bold Collective and Gaurav Nanda, Bend Goods USA.

What personality types succeed as design icons? It’s a commonly held view that people who perform best in business are extroverts, but is this true for design? Who are the major players and icons in the Australian design community, and how does their activity and overall design personality exemplify the future of our industry? The Heavy Hitters Series. Hosted by SeehoSu, panelists include: Alexander Lotersztain, Derlot; Jason Bird, Luxxbox; Tomek Archer, Archer Office; Christopher Boots, Christopher Boots Design; Melonie Bayl-Smith, Bijl Architecture; Todd Hammond, Woods Bagot; Tim Giles, Geyer and Paul Hecker, Hecker Guthrie.

Heavy Hitters Series Friday 14 August, 2.30pm @ SeehoSu, 137 – 141 Devonshire St, Surry Hills Emerging Players Series Friday 14 August, 10.00am @ Special Lights, 586 Crown St, Surry Hills

The Emerging Players Series. Longevity & Icons: Is the age of the icon over? We seem to be obsessed in the media with architecture, design and art icons – mirroring the celebrity culture in mainstream media. What is the purpose in labelling works or people as such and why do we do it? What defines an icon? “An icon is one of two things,” Architect Sam Marshall asserts: Firstly, it can be “Something that represents something else – a big issue or idea, such as a religious icon. It encapsulates the bigger idea.” The second kind also represents an idea, but has the added iconic quality of being completely unique. Marshall offers the Sydney Opera House as an example. “It encapsulated the whole modernist movement,” he says, “but there’s also nothing that looks it.” Art, Design & Architecture: The intersection of creativity When talking about creative disciplines, how do they strengthen and support each other? How do they compete and intersect? We examine the interrelationship between art, design and architecture and discuss how they can be more accessible. “Education and exposure are key,” comments Gene Sherman. “In the 21st Century we have come a long way in broadening audiences for, the awareness of, and the pleasure to be had from contact with excellent art, architecture and design.”

The Project

Something very snap-worthy

If there was ever an Instagram moment it was now! The Project is the Wow! moment you’re looking for at Sydney Indesign. This unique creative-matchmaking platform brings architects, designers and creative parties together with high-end brands to stretch the imagination – as well as product, brand and space. The results of these cross-disciplinary collaborations are often spatial, involve amazing installations as well as fun, interactive activities. This year’s theme for The Project is ‘Ritual’. We’ve asked creative teams to explore the concept of ritual in both design practice and design business. The results are going to be touchy, feely, fabulous and definitely snap-worthy. Tag it! #theproject2015 #SID15

The Project

From all around the world, design identities and international personalities join us to share their specialist knowledge and enrich the Sydney Indesign experience.

Arthur G, Euroluce, Luxmy Furniture and WORKSHOPPED with Design by Toko

Designer Pinboards with Fulton Trotter Architects

An unchecked fire can rapidly grow out of control, and often the best defense is back burning. The #HillStBonfire is an innovative way to back burn and draw attention to a damaging situation in the design industry - the firestorm of replicas. This inspiring collaboration will produce ‘ashes’ for the regrowth of an authentic design industry to spring from.

Using ritual and tradition as a launching pad, this collaboration explores the art of pinning and celebrates the traditions that remain essential to our lives. Since the days of cave painting, humans have displayed images on their walls. Social media gave birth to virtual pinning, but did not put an end to physical pinning. This engaging space explores pinning’s beauty and tactility.

Cafe Culture + Insitu with Krasivaya

Designrepublic with Bleux and Black Sheep

Exploring the ritual of unwrapping, revealing and discovery this collaboration sheds light on the creative process. Craftsmanship that uses time-honoured traditions to create something new will be highlighted in this enlightening space. Expect a fascinating take on design for the everyday rituals of living, within settings for relationships, engagement and productivity.

Reconnect with the lost roots of our shared past at ‘The Spirit House’. This installation explores the tradition of body modification rituals across the world and the patterns tribes imprint on their bodies as symbols of a connection with nature. ‘The Spirit House’ is a place to connect with the environment, in a transformative way.

20

Europanel with Geyer Europanel and Geyer re-enter into collaboration to explore our experiential relationship with built environments. Expect a reconfigured and revitalised use of the elements of their 2013 piece, which explored structural form and sensory experiences. This is a complex piece that subtly transforms the familiar world into something strange.

Integ International with Gantner Electronics and Shane Addison Most people perform unnoticed rituals everyday. This performance piece explores the essential processes that we weave seamlessly into our lives. This dynamic collaboration reveals rituals performed throughout the day that can lead to healthier workplaces. Engage with the piece by using ergonomic systems to design a ritual that’s uniquely yours!

Interface with DJRD Architects, Emma Elizabeth Designs, He Made She Made, Interface Design Studio, Maaike, The Design Residency Experience beautiful thinking in action, with this clever collaboration between Interface and six amazing designers. The results are a stunning array of living spaces inspired by the moods of nature. Relax in places built around emotional rituals for calm refuge and enjoy vibrancy in dynamic areas built for the pragmatic rituals of life.

KE-ZU with Other Architects Domestic rituals, rites, routines and habits may seem inconsequential, but they instill meaning amidst the chaos of contemporary life. Embodied within each piece of furniture are potential rituals. These may be active - the comforting movement of a rocking chair - or dormant, concealed within a material’s utility. This spatial theatre draws attention to furniture’s role within domestic ritual.

Maximum with Thomas Coward Studio The Maximum sculptural piece has been designed and crafted specifically for Galleria. Employing the unique size, varied textures and finishes of Maximum Statuario, Travertino and Nero Supremo porcelain panels, the piece explores ancient physical symbols and the ritual of communication throughout time.

Karndean Designflooring with Latitude Group

Lamicolor Pfleiderer with HDR Rice Daubney Architects

Meta with Pocketspace Interiors

For centuries, timber has been the base note for scents. This collaboration between Karndean and Latitude Group is a multisensory experience that invites you to smell, touch and see. Timbers from around the world, French Oaks, American Redwoods, Scottish Beech and Mexican Cypress, will transport you with an evocative perfume.

Humans have always shared their lives and experiences, but social media ritualises and documents this process. Lamicolor with HDR Rice Daubney explore the opportunities that sharing can give us, allowing the collective creation of innovative design. This interactive space invites you to view your own role in our kaleidoscopic and common world.

This collaboration brings to the fore the unique ability of the spaces we live and work in to inspire us. Exploring the communicative power that exists even in small areas, Meta Australia and Pocketspace Interiors present both diversity and keenly focused design. This is a space that will excite you.

The Project

“ Everyday rituals shape our lives; these collaborations take them to new heights”

OBODO contemporary furniture with SJB Interiors Our existence today is intrinsically linked to the rituals of nature and time. This connection is unbreakable, a circular and eternal link. This collaboration explores the circular form of the OBODO brand, inspiring insights through the combination of natural materials and mirrors. Applications of evergreen ivy symbolise the palpable connection between the past and the present.

SeehoSu with SUMU Design SeehoSu celebrates the art of tradition through the ritual of origami, filling their space with a floating flock of exquisitely folded paper cranes. See the magic wrought by many hands as 1,000 paper cranes, folded by SeehoSu with family and friends, spread their wings and take flight.

Reece Bathroom Life with 6 Hats

Signature Floorconcepts with Siren Design Group

Bathroom rituals, we all have them. The bathroom is an integral part of our lives – it’s the place we get ready to start our days and the place we unwind at the end of it. These everyday rituals are made unique by all our little choices. In this interactive installation the intimate relationship with the bathroom is explored.

Signature Floorconcepts and Siren Design have created a fun-filled space that explores the ritual of play. Discard your inhibitions and dive in; this project encourages movement through interactive tactile elements. A mysterious lens will reflect the body’s interactions with shapes and colours, creating a surreal and playful space.

22

Spence & Lyda with CATC Design School The planet we live on feeds us, sustains us, protects us, gives us life. This collaboration is a reminder that we need to respect and nourish our planet in return. Luxuriate in the beauty of the sun, filtering through a dynamic and evolving window installation of fantastic proportions in the Spence & Lyda space.

Staple&Co with cm studio Within each piece of wellcrafted furniture lies the artistry of its maker. This collaboration explores the cherished rituals and processes that traditional artisans use to create their work. Insights into the often European crafts that these people bring to our shores will be revealed, provoking you to engage with the mastery and talent of age-old artistry.

Stormtech with SJB Architects

TCW with PTID

Viabizzuno with Woods Bagot

Pipes surround us, carrying water past us and around us. It’s often a hidden process, the end product the only tangible result of a daily ritual. This collaboration between Stormtech and SJB invites you to play and interact; provoking your curiosity and drawing to attention the movement of water we are surrounded by.

Smile, laugh and learn with this exciting journey through several of today’s modern rituals. TCW and PTID’S collaboration invites you to engage, interact and explore with elements of everyday living you may never have thought deeply about before. Expect the unexpected.

Rituals are a kind of pattern, the weaving together of which makes up our lives. The daily rituals we engage in, both publicly and privately are closely linked to our desires for comfort and familiarity. This collaboration between Viabizzuno and Woods Bagot looks at the patterns we share and what makes us innately human.

Tappeti Fine Hand-crafted Rugs + Carpets with Cox Architects

The Textile Company with SJB

Engage all your senses with this dynamic and vibrant collaboration between Tappeti and Cox Architects that reveals the ritual and traditional art of rug weaving. Feel the textures, excite the mind and tantalise the tastebuds. This is an immersive experience you won’t forget!

Plunge yourself into a textural experience where you’re encouraged to look, feel and enjoy. This space explores the creative possibilities of fabric, transforming the ways we traditionally interact with the textiles around us. Enjoy luxurious layers and the tactility of this space.

“ Performance art, spatial theatre, installation, multi-sensory experiences...The Project takes design to another dimension.”

Launch Pad

The annual competition and mentoring program for emerging industrial designers. The Launch Pad bar was set high this year, with entries submitted from some fiercely committed emerging talent across Australia. Emerging designers often feel challenged to cut through the noise of a very loud and crowded industry. Not only does Launch Pad give emerging players a platform and workshops with the industry’s most knowledgable insiders, it also gives them a chance to explore and define what design can do to solve problems in a hugely supportive and practical way. Small living spaces for example, has been a dominant theme from this years finalists, where many have used the challenge to consider and solve the problems of modern living, both commercially and residentially. Others have used the platform to tackle issues such as sustainability, culture and behaviour, material experimentation and form exploration.

Launch Pad Finalists Exhibition Thurs 13 Aug, 4pm – 9pm Fri 14 – Sat 15 Aug, 10am–6pm Galleria, 2 Locomotive St, Eveleigh Free to register and attend

In 2015, the winner will not only receive a $10,000 grant, PR and media support, but also additional production plan management, and a network of industry experts to bounce ideas off.

Launch Pad

See the top 12 entries from the next design generation at the Launch Pad Finalists Exhibition Eon Alex Fitzpatrick / adesignstudio.com.au

Fold Series Susan Chen / susanchenceramics.com The Fold tableware series was inspired by small-scale architectural models; the idea that every design prototype begins with a single “fold”. The design itself challenges the idea of traditional materials such as clay to create a range of contemporary and architecturally inspired tableware. The range features a number of pieces including a Teacup Soup Bowl, Noodle Bowl and Pasta Bowl Platter to name a few. The pieces are made from ceramic porcelain; a material which is inherently designed to last several lifetimes, therefore reducing the need to replace the products on a regular basis. The tableware is also produced on a small scale, making a strong comment that quality and consistency can be prioritised over mass production.

Light influences our mood, our emotions and interactions with our surroundings. Eon is a light system that is part geometry, part alchemy, with a feeling of movement and energy. The design is broken down into three elements that correspond to three simple two-dimensional geometric shapes. They all work alone but collaborate together to create a unified whole. With its long life and minimal design, the fitting does not rely on traditional, old globe technology, but a single LED chip with a low glare lens allowing 50,000 hours of life.

I’m Yours Anita Whitbourn / anitatrowbridge@hotmail.com With spaces becoming smaller, it is now very common for people to combine their study and guest room. I’m Yours is a table that works with adaptable surfaces selected to suit the required use. Specifically designed for user and space flexibility, this table would be quite at home in a cafe, providing a space for customers to hang their coat, and a place for items like menus, or within a residential setting for temporary hanging space. The main aim was to design a multi-function item so it could be tailored to the user’s needs, rather than requiring a new piece of furniture in the future. This was envisaged as a lasting design peice, rather than one of the moment. 26

BB-Liney Coat Racks Alana Birch / alana000@live.com.au One of the frustrations of being a renter is the feeling of never owning your space. In some cases tenants need the approval of their landlord to even blue tack posters to the walls they pay for. Screwing in shelves? Forget it! BB-Liney Coat Racks were designed to brighten the days of young, first-time renters having trouble finding durable furniture pieces that are both easy to move and don’t damage their walls.

Ark Torin O’Connell / torinoconnell@gmail.com Motivated by the challenge to marry sustainability and modern, interesting products, the Ark side table features locally sourced plywood and concrete fit for an understated living space. How does Ark achieve this? An efficient Organic-LED panel has been integrated, which helps achieve an attractive slim profile form while providing warm and natural light for the user. Crafted with locally sourced plywood and concrete, Ark’s use of these materials highlights the natural, organic feel of the side table, ultimately producing a thoughtful, unobtrusive and functional design.

Magazine Stable Brad Wray / bradwrayworkshop.com The Magazine Stable is an experiment in creating an adaptable, multi-use object that is designed to create more with less. Forming a side table, magazine rack and reading stool all-in-one, the piece also makes a statement about our modern “throwaway” society where our built environment in all scales is now being purposely conceived with a short-lifespan. In addition, it is a reaction to the perceived consensus for more and more and that bigger is better, favouring raw, textured materials in place of the generic and overdone. 27

Launch Pad

Calisto Lamp Drew Spangenberg & Stephen Roy / stephenroy.com.au Swing Stool Dale Hardiman / doweljones.com Designed completely around the manufacturing process, Swing is a single-material sand-cast aluminium stool aimed at using geometry to maximise the liquid metal flow when casting. Due to Swing’s curved seat, the real beauty of the stool is not visible at first glance. Left completely raw with little to no post-finishing, the rawness of the production process compliments the complexity of the design against the simplicity of the process. Swing is minimal in its design language, created as a statement or feature piece for galleries, museums or your everyday design-art aficionado.

Warmas YOU Thomas Hastings / mrthomhastings@gmail.com Sitting outside on a cool Melbourne evening under an overhead heater is certainly a pleasant place to enjoy company and a drink. With these heaters, much of the energy is wasted on heating the air and surrounds and is lost. Motivated by finding a way to emulate the more pleasant gentle heat that you feel from passing a dark brick wall that has been basking in the afternoon sun, the Warmas stool was created. Warmas heats you with stored energy, meaning it does not need to be plugged into an electric outlet when in use. With a clever design and a patent protected system you can charge up the stool with thermal energy during the day and unplug and move it around as required. 28

As a team Drew Spangenberg and Stephen Roy focused on the features common to the materials used in both their practices (timber and glass). Finally, it was decided that the piece should utilise the tactility and varying textures of the materials and draw in users to create a more interactive experience. The final product is constructed of a hand blown glass sphere and turned timber cap that holds all wiring internally. In a clever bid to give access to various sectors of the market, the smaller light is directed at residential use, and the larger is aimed at a more commercial audience.

Pinguino Simon Colabufalo / colabufalo.com

Bcompact Stairs Zev Bianchi / bcompact.com Living in a small terrace in Surry Hills, with a tiny back courtyard and an upstairs terrace with no connecting stairs – nor the space for any – was the driving force behind Bcompact. Wanting to gain access to that terrace without loosing all the space in the courtyard, Bcompact was designed as a solution to that all-tofamiliar problem. Bcompat is a flat, folding staircase/ ladder system that comes and goes when needed, providing maximum space potential and added security. It can be locked at the top or at the bottom, denning access to either level. A clever solution to compact living.

Pinguino is a fun, functional salt & peppershaker, based on the form of a penguin. In a sweet and kitschy blend of form and function, rotating the penguin’s beak switchers from salt to pepper. Though the prototype has been made from machined clear acrylic, the commercialised iteration could be made from PET, which can be recycled at the end of the product life cycle. Injection mould tooling and draft angles have been taken into consideration to acheive the final design.

Split Rhys Cooper / rhyscooper.com.au The motivation behind this design was to manipulate the idea of a stereotypical work surface and provide the end user with an array of options. The durable thermoformed Corian work surface incorporates cable management and book display, with the splitlevel timber surface for inactive items. With honest detailing matched to the manufacturing techniques employed, the desk uses a combination of contemporary and traditional materials.

Advertorial Herman Miller has long been recognised as a leader in commercial and residential design. Less well known though, is the range of products for healthcare related facilities. Now that is changing.

Herman Miller brings its comprehensive and award winning range of healthcare products to Australia.

hermanmiller.com.au

Herman Miller’s journey into health came about in order to solve a problem. Just over 40 years ago, Robert Propst, designer of Action Office and President of Herman Miller Research checked into hospital for back surgery. During his recovery he noticed how the inefficient supply, storage and distribution system caused unnecessary strain on doctors, nurses and support staff. On his return to work, he launched a research project and soon produced a solution: Co/Struc, a modular rail mounted storage and delivery

system for hospital clinical areas. Since its launch, Herman Miller healthcare has grown and expanded, changing with the times and technology in this field and today Herman Miller has the largest and most comprehensive health-care furniture offering across the globe. Combining our healthcare range with our existing product lines means we are able to supply furniture solutions for all aspects of the heath environment: from the welcome zone, through to all levels of patient care and the spaces in between.
