2. TRADE – KEY FINDINGS The Asian primary vegetables market showed steady growth, rising from 719.4 million tonnes in 2007 to 876.2 million tonnes in 2013. In value terms it expanded with a CAGR of 12%, reaching 376.7 billion USD in 2013. Asian primary vegetable production growth is expected to slow to 6% (currently +12%), amidst sluggish domestic demand. In the past, primary vegetable consumption was fueled by rising purchasing power, especially among urban population. However, this engine of growth is now pressured by the current economic slowdown. The countries with the largest quantity of harvested area were China (24.4 million Ha), India (8.7 million Ha), Turkey (1.1 million Ha) and Indonesia (1.0 million Ha), together accounting for 82% of the harvested area in Asia. Only the Republic of Korea showed negative dynamics (-2%) over the period under review. The remaining countries showed modest growth in relative values: Indonesia (+1%), Iran (+1%), Turkey (+2%) and the Philippines (+1%). The output of the five major producers of primary vegetables, namely China, India, Turkey, Iran and Viet Nam, represented more than 88% of Asia’s output. In China, a country with a long tradition in producing vegetables, production increased by 3% annually from 2007 to 2013. The balance of the countries, except Japan, showed steady growth in physical terms. Especially high was growth in Viet Nam (+11%) and India (+5%). In 2013, Argentina and Brazil were the main suppliers of primary vegetables to Asia with a combined share of 60% of total imports. However, the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2013 were Brazil (+36% per year) and Mexico (+25% per year). Brazil significantly strengthened its position in the Asian imports structure, from 0% in 2007 to 27% in 2013. China dominated in Asian primary vegetables production and trade. In 2013, China exported 0.5% of its total output. Of this amount, 15.7% was supplied to Malaysia, where Chinese vegetables held a 13.9% share of total Malaysia’s consumption. The food processing industry has always been heavily reliant on international trade to source its main raw materials. Large food companies try to reduce the volatility in raw material prices. One of the main ways to do this is by establishing long-term pricing agreements and backward integration (contractual farming). These factors will strongly influence the market in the medium term.
