2. EXTRA-EU TRADE – KEY FINDINGS From 2007 to 2014, the EU contact lenses market showed mixed dynamics. A significant drop in the period from 2009 to 2011 was followed by a steady increase in 2012-2014. In 2014, it grew by 7% to 6.7 billion EUR. In physical terms it also showed mixed dynamics, but ultimately increased from 2.45 billion units in 2007 to 3.32 billion units in 2014. From 2007 to 2013, EU total exports of contact lenses grew by 7% per year, amounting to 2.6 billion EUR in 2014. In physical terms, they reached 4.4 billion units in 2014, which was 579 million units more than the year before. Ireland and the United Kingdom were the main suppliers of contact lenses from the EU, with a combined share of 60.7% of total imports in 2014. However, the fastest growing supplier was Belgium (+28% per year) in total EU exports from 2007 to 2014. Belgium

significantly strengthened its position in the European

export structure, from 2% in 2007 to 6% in 2014. In 2014, the main destinations of contact lenses were the United Kingdom (27%), Germany (16%) and Italy (11%). The share exported to Italy increased (+1 percentage points), while the share sent to the Netherlands illustrated negative dynamics (-5 percentage points). The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
