2. EU TRADE – KEY FINDINGS The countries with the highest levels of production in 2013 were Italy (4,790 million EUR), France (651 million EUR) and Germany (454 million EUR), which together accounted for 82.2% of total output. In Italy, production declined by -9.3% annually from 2007 to 2013. The remaining countries showed slight declines in relative values: Spain (-9.8%), Greece (-8.8%), Finland (-8.2%) and Portugal (-5.0%). The production of articles of goldsmiths' or silversmiths' wares of precious metals dropped significantly over the analyzed period. Its lowest point was in 2012 with 1.9 billion EUR and its highest levels were recorded in 2007 with 6.6 billion EUR. The difference in production can be explained mainly by purchasing power in the EU. Switzerland and Thailand were the main suppliers of jewellery into the EU, with a combined share of 55.3% of total imports in 2013. They were the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2013 with a CAGR of +16.6% and +1.9%, respectively. Switzerland
significantly strengthened its position in the European imports structure,
from 17.4% in 2007 to 39.9% in 2013. In 2013, Switzerland (33.6%), the United Arab Emirates (16.3%), China (13.1%), the USA (9.2%) and Turkey (2.4%) were the main destinations of EU exports, together making up 74.6% of total exports in value terms. While the shares of Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates increased, the share of the USA illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. Italy dominated in EU jewellery production and trade. In 2013, Italy exported 72.5% of its total output. Of this amount, 23.2% was supplied to the United Arab Emirates.
