2. KEY FINDINGS From 2007 to 2014, EU rice production showed mixed dynamics: years 2008 and 2009 were marked by a downturn, followed by a period of recovery lasting from 2010 to 2014. However, in 2014 production volumes stood at 3,126 thousand tonnes, which was still lower than those of 2007 (3,293 tonnes). In value terms, EU rice production reached 2,488 million EUR in 2014, growing by +1.2% annually. The countries with the largest production of rice in absolute volumes were Italy (1,000 thousand tonnes) and Spain (953 thousand tonnes). They were distantly followed by France (177 thousand tonnes), Portugal (171 thousand tonnes) and Greece (80 thousand tonnes). Positive dynamics in rice production among the main producing countries from 2007 to 2014 were recorded in France (+2.2% per year), while for the other four EU leaders (Italy, Spain, Portugal and Greece) the paces of growth were more modest or negative. Italy dominated in EU rice production and trade. In 2014, it exported 61% of its total rice output. Of this amount, 19% was supplied to Germany, where Italian rice held a 36% share of total Germany’s imports.
