2. TRADE – KEY FINDINGS From 2007 to 2013, Norway’s market for bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts showed mixed dynamics. A significant drop in 2009 (-80% Y-o-Y) was followed by a sharp increase from 2010 to 2012. In 2013, it plunged again to 20,8 thousand tonnes (-30% Y-o-Y). In value terms it showed similar dynamics, reaching 101.3 million USD in 2013. Production of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts over the last few years fluctuated significantly, but ultimately showed a slight growth both in physical and value terms. In 2013, it reached 12.6 thousand tonnes (twice less than the peak production level recorded in 2009) and 39.0 million USD. Production and market structure by type were similar. Iron or steel towers and lattice masts held the lion’s share (99% of production and 70% of market). In value terms the share of bridges and bridge sections was more significant due to higher prices. Norway’s growth in bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts supply is expected to slow to 5.6% (currently +10.4%), amidst sluggish domestic demand. Germany and the Netherlands were the main suppliers of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice into Norway, with a combined share of 43.2% of total imports in 2013. However, the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2013 were Poland (+59.8% per year) and Croatia (+57.3% per year). The Netherlands significantly strengthened its position in Norway’s imports structure, from 0.9% in 2007 to 21.2% in 2013. In 2013, Denmark had the largest share of Norway’s exports of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts, taking 94.3% in value terms. While the share of the Netherlands increased, the share of Spain illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
