2. TRADE – KEY FINDINGS Turkey’s clay tile and roofing market showed steady growth, rising from 431 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 490.4 thousand tonnes in 2013. In value terms it expanded with a CAGR of 7%, reaching 153.0 million USD in 2013. Clay tile and roofing production showed similar dynamics over the last few years. From 2007 to 2013, Turkey’s production expanded to 467.7 thousand tonnes. In value terms it reached 104.3 million USD. Turkey’s clay tile and roofing market trends are defined by production dynamics. Being one of the main drivers of private and public investments in Turkey, construction is one of the key sectors in the country. As a result of economic reforms, Turkey has established a large and strong construction industry in a short period of time. Over the last few years, Turkey became one of the major producers of basic construction materials such as cement, building steel, timber, bricks, PVC, polyethylene, glass, ceramic tiles and sanitary ware. Turkey is especially strong and competitive in producing construction steel, cement, ceramic and glass products. Ceramics are amongst Turkey’s oldest and best-known products. Turkey’s share in world ceramic tile production rose to 3-4%. Besides, this sector provided employment for 30 thousand people. Turkey’s growth in clay tile and roofing supply is expected to accelerate to 7.1% (currently +6.6%), due to the current economic recovery in Europe, rising production volume and exports. In the past, clay tile supply was under pressure from the economic slowdown. The share of import products is negligible and accounted for 1.8% (2013, based on tonnes) of total domestic consumption. In 2014, Greece (79.6%) and Germany (14.2%) were the leading suppliers of clay tiles and roofing, together making up 93.8% of Turkey’s imports in value terms. While the share of Greece increased significantly, the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. In 2014, the UK and Azerbaijan were the main destinations of Turkish clay tiles and roofing with a combined share of 59.1% in total exports. However, the fastest growing destination from 2007 to 2013 was Turkmenistan (+19.3% per year).
