2. TRADE – KEY FINDINGS From 2007 to 2013, Turkey’s electrical transformers market showed mixed dynamics. A significant increase in 2009 (+53% Y-o-Y) was followed by a sharp decrease in 2010 (30% Y-o-Y). Over the next two years, the market gradually decreased until it grew again in 2013 (+7% Y-o-Y). As a result, the market value stood at 638 million USD in 2013. Electrical transformers production over the last few years also showed mixed dynamics. The gradual increase over the period from 2007 to 2009 was interrupted by a slight decline in 2010-2011, but resumed in 2012. Over the next two years, output gradually increased to 1.1 billion USD. Electrical transformers consumption growth in Turkey is expected to accelerate to 4% (currently +2%), amidst the current economic recovery. In the past, it was under pressure from the economic slowdown. At present, though, electrical transformers consumption is fueled by rising purchasing power. In 2014, Saudi Arabia (35,9%), Iraq (22,9%) and Turkmenistan (21,0%) were the leading destinations, together making up 79,8% of Turkey's exports. While the share of Turkmenistan increased significantly, the share of Saudi Arabia illustrated negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period. In 2014, China and Germany were the main suppliers of electrical transformers into Turkey, with a combined share of 49.2% in total imports. However, the fastest growing suppliers from 2007 to 2014 were Austria (+39% per year) and the Republic of Korea (+15% per year). One of the main global trends in the equipment and machinery industry over the last few years has been a shifting of potential market opportunities from developed countries to developing ones. While the economically mature markets of the USA, Canada, Australia and Western Europe are close to their saturation point in terms of electrical transformers consumption, emerging economies, such as Turkey, China, India, Russia, Brazil, Eastern European and South American countries are far from saturated. They share a few similar characteristics, including rising population, an improved economic situation, increasing disposable incomes and urbanization.
