2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS The U.S. continued its dominance in the global apple trade. In 2014, the U.S. exported 889 thousand tonnes of apples totaling 1,086 million USD, 3% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Mexico, where it supplied 25% of its total apple exports in value terms, accounting for nearly all (96%) of Mexico’s total imports. From 2007 to 2014, the U.S. was a net exporter of apples. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced, with the exception of 2007 and 2009 when high import prices made the difference more notable. China and Italy were among the other main global suppliers of apples in 2014. China was also among the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 (+10% per year), and by virtue of this, significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure. The U.S.'s top 5 trading partners in 2014 were the aforementioned Mexico, as well as Canada, India, the United Arab Emirates and Viet Nam, with a combined 61% share of U.S. apple exports. The share of Viet Nam increased (+4 percentage points), while the share of Canada illustrated negative dynamics (-5 percentage points).
