2. TRADE – KEY FINDINGS From 2007-2013, the global cashew nuts market showed mixed dynamics, but ultimately increased by 2% to 2.6 billion USD. The significant plunge was registered in 2012 (-25% Y-o-Y), after which the market still did not manage to restore its previous volumes. Despite minor decreases in 2010 and 2012, the production of cashew nuts can be characterized by stable growth. In 2013, global production in physical terms increased by 2%, reaching 4.44 million tonnes, which is far higher than the lowest level of cashew nuts production recorded in 2007 (3.70 million tonnes). Global growth in cashew nuts consumption is expected to slow to 1.9% (currently +2.2%). However, this descent will not be notable. It is expected that the world trade development as well as the expansion of Asian and African countries to external markets may lead to the increase of production volumes in developed countries. The countries with the largest harvested area were India (992 thousand Ha), Côte d'Ivoire (900 thousand Ha), Brazil (695 thousand Ha) and Indonesia (575 thousand Ha), which together accounted for 57.94% of total volume of harvested area. In Brazil, the volume of harvested area experienced a 1% annual decline from 2007-2013. The remaining countries showed slight growth in physical terms: India (+3%), Côte d'Ivoire (+3%), Benin (+15%), the United Republic of Tanzania (+1%). The yield also fluctuated slightly over the analyzed period. Its lowest point was observed in 2009 at 7,424 Hg/Ha and the highest was recorded in 2008 with 8,231 Hg/Ha. Broad harvested areas along with high yield in 2008 resulted in the oversupply of cashew nuts in the world market. The yield in 2013 was lower than in 2008. The difference in yields can be explained mainly by different climatic conditions. The output of the four major producers of cashew nuts, namely Viet Nam, Nigeria, India and Côte d'Ivoire, represented more than 73% of global output. In Viet Nam, a country with
centuries-old tradition in producing nuts, the production levels decreased by 2%
annually from 2007-2013. The balance of the countries showed steady growth in physical terms. Especially high were the growth levels in Burkina Faso (+61% per year) and Benin (+20% per year). Cashew nuts manufacturers have to find a delicate balance between managing increasing overhead costs, due to commodity, logistical price increases and growing retail price increases. A popular retail strategy includes promotional price activity for brands, thus narrowing the gap with private label and B-brand alternatives.
