2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS Portugal dominates in the global olive trade. In 2014, Portugal exported 23 thousand tonnes of olives totaling 23 million USD, 9% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Spain, where it supplied 98% of its total olive exports in value terms, accounting for the lion’s share of Spain’s total imports. Overall, the global olive trade dropped to 53 million USD, with a CAGR of 0.4% from 2012 to 2014. In physical terms over that period, it showed a steady decline, falling from 56 thousand tonnes in 2012 to 40 thousand tonnes in 2014. In 2014, Italy (28%), Spain (13%), Portugal (8%), Poland (8%) and the U.S. (4%) were the leading destinations of olive imports, together making up 61% of global imports. The share of Spain increased (+9 percentage points), while the share of the U.S. illustrated negative dynamics (-9 percentage points). Greece and Spain were among the other main global suppliers of olives in 2014 with a combined 26% share of global exports. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2012 to 2014 were Bulgaria (+141% per year) and Jordan (+64% per year). Still, it was Portugal that significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure, from 20% in 2012 to 44% in 2014.
