India is truly soaring to new heights. Investors from across the globe, as well as those in our own backyard, are viewing our nation as a land of unparalleled opportunity. This burgeoning interest is evident everywhere – from the surging stock markets to the skyrocketing demand for luxury homes, high-end automobiles, and exquisite art.
It's encouraging to see the government leaning on the side of rationalisation and aligning the long-term capital gains tax on property sales with that of equities. Although we forfeit the indexation tax benefits, this move is a commendable step towards ensuring greater fairness for all.
As India flourishes, we believe this is an exceptional time to indulge in luxury – be it a dream home, remarkable art, or unique experiences. The Hurun India 2024 Global Rich List has added 94 new billionaires, outpacing China's 55. Who would have imagined that India would add more billionaires than China!
This autumn edition is brimming with inspiring narratives. Amongst them, we are proud to showcase the extraordinary work of Sri Lankan artist Senaka Senanayake and to celebrate trailblazers like designer Ashiesh Shah and photographer Bharat Sikka. Enjoy!
Inthe quiet of a well-loved home, Where art and stories freely roam,
We savour moments, cherish light, In dishes rich, in dreams of flight.
We wander lands, both near and far, Each journey shaping who we are…..
Dearest gentle reader, we bring you another edition brimming with stories of extraordinary people, places, and homes. We hope it adds a vibrant layer of color to your festive Indian-Autumn.

The safety of a comfort zone is not meant for those who dream big, and Shah undoubtedly reaches for the stars. "Creativity does not need brackets," asserts the sharp designer cum Instagrammer. Shah's career trajectory is a testament to his philosophy. From architecture to interior design, and more recently, to the revival of Indian crafts, his journey is marked by continuous evolution, challenging the norms and exploring the boundaries of creative expression.
In an alternate world, Ashiesh Shah would have been a doctor, and the realm of the creative would have suffered a great loss. But when the heart knows what it wants with crystal clarity, and your loved ones tell you, “Go answer your calling,” a star is born.
From minimalist Mumbai apartments to luxurious Delhi homes, Shah’s work is a canvas that celebrates Indian art and culture fused with contemporary flair. In a candid conversation, he shares insights into his journey, his creative process, and the design language he has crafted along the way.
I don't look at myself as someone who will have a rubber stamp, because then I think it
becomes very easy to copy you.
Ashiesh Shah
As a pioneer architect, Shah had his pick of the places he could settle down and establish his practice in. After pursuing his studies in architecture at the prestigious Parsons School of Design in New York, he could feel the winds changing as his world opened up to a wide range of artistic expressions.
At the end of the day, his motherland tugged at his heartstrings and he chose to return to India. “I think when I came back to India, the main thing in my life was that I needed to explore more of what was within the country. And that could have been the textiles, the crafts, the art. So I started with contemporary art, and I started buying it for myself, my clients and my projects,” he expressed.
Returning to India, Shah was determined to carve a niche in the competitive world of architecture and interior design. He started his career working under renowned architects before establishing his own practice. While quite modern and minimalist in his approach, Shah’s designs often incorporate elements of Indian artisanship, which he believes are essential to remaining in touch with one’s roots.
“Every space I design has a story to tell, and traditional crafts are the words,” Shah explains. This philosophy was evident in one of his recent projects, where he skillfully integrated Warli paintings into the décor of a modern corporate office, creating a stunning contrast between the old and the new.
Rather than having a signature product or style, Shah believes in having a distinct language across his works. “Looking at a space or a product, people should instantly realise that this is by Ashiesh Shah. Signature styles evolve with time, and it’s better to grow as you go rather than stick to one design philosophy. I don't look at myself as someone who will have a rubber stamp, because then I think it becomes very easy to copy you. Moving on as soon as you've done the maximum you could do with that particular signature is always better.”
Speaking the Design Language
Shah faced the usual ordeal while setting up his practice and making people understand his unique
Shah is also an ardent advocate for sustainable design, emphasising the use of eco-friendly materials and techniques.
sense of style. Not everyone spoke the language he was fluent in, and sometimes, things got lost in translation. The architect quips, “I feel like it's important to know your client and to pick a client that knows your language and is ready to help you grow that language, especially after you've established a certain level of work. When I started off, it was difficult for me because it was a new minimalist sensibility, away from the kitsch that was widely prevalent.”
“Every mug had some chumba. The Moroccan Mediterranean theme just killed me sometimes. Not only that, even a rickshaw and a BST bus or a horn, it was everywhere. I'm sorry to say, but that's not the real India. That's just a printed copy of India,” Shah adds.
So how did he find people who spoke his language? It was a collaborative process, to begin with. Clients kept coming once they saw Shah’s extraordinary vision and perspective on every aspect of design. Word of mouth was enough to spread the word that a new inspired architect had arrived on the scene.
“I think the biggest disagreements happen when people don't want to listen to each other, right? Like it's my way or the highway. And I don't think design or any creative journey is about that. It's always a collaborative process.”
Weaving in the owner's personality into the aesthetics, to create modern yet warm spaces is how Shah best describes his interior design process. Today, his clients come from a wide range of fields and continents, and has a bevvy of Bollywood stars including Hrithik Roshan, Ranbir Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, Jacqueline Fernandes and Aditya Roy Kapoor, to name a few.
An avid art collector himself, Shah has an impeccable eye for Indian art, which he says is at a vibrant juncture. As an architect, he also knows how invaluable art is in infusing more vibrancy and life into a space. So, when buying art to go with your decor, Shah advises, “I think it's very important to do your research, it's very important to ask questions, not be shy or intimidated by it, ask questions to the galleries like, what is the background of this artist? It doesn't matter, that person doesn't need to come from the biggest school of art, but does that have a heartening story?”
In the end, Shah firmly stands by his belief in every space narrating a story that echoes the values of the inhabitant. What he loves most is helping his clients pick the right art, craft and textiles from the vast repertoire of Indian talent to bring the spaces alive.
“Concrete is the most unsustainable material you can ever use,” Shah has a strong perspective on sustainability and we couldn’t agree more. He is also an ardent advocate for sustainable design, emphasising the use of eco-friendly materials and techniques. “Sustainability is not just a feature of my work; it's a fundamental aspect of how I envision the future of design,” he remarks. This commitment echoes in his choice of materials as recycled wood, hand-made bricks, and natural stones are staples in his projects.
“We can't help but use wires that are non-sustainable. So what's easier to do is spend some time, look at your drawings and reduce the amount of material you can use on-site. If you don't need the extra wires, why loop it all, you know? If you don't need the extra switches, why have more plastic around? We try to use metal switches now,” Shah elaborates.
He further adds, “The way we look at sustainability is it's not only the environment, it's also craft, it's also legacy, it's also heritage. The essence of sustainability needs to be blended with the social aspect of it.”
Shah is also a mentor to several talented craftsmen, guiding them through the quality demanded by luxury spaces, and encouraging them to finesse their designs. His journey is a compelling story of breaking free from conventional labels to embrace a broader, more inclusive vision of creativity and sustainability.
In the heart of a bustling art studio, amidst the gentle brush strokes, stands Senaka Senanayake, a virtuoso whose life's work is as vibrant as the palettes he wields. For Senanayake, a renowned artist from Sri Lanka, his journey in art is not merely about aesthetics; it's a profound commitment to environmental activism, particularly the preservation of rainforests not only in his native land but globally.
Between a packed schedule that includes making commissioned paintings and prepping for the next mixed collection exhibition in Mumbai at Groveland Gallery this November, Senaka Senanayake spoke candidly to Home & Art. An endless list of achievements and international acclaim has only made the prodigy artist more humble and accessible. His anecdotes echoed his love for art as he took us through his artistic journey, which started when he was just 6.
“Art is meant to be accessible and understood by everyone,” says Senanayake. “What’s the point of art when people don’t respond to it, people don’t resonate with it?” Even when Senanayake was just a child, he learned how to craft beautiful artworks before he learned how to spell words.
Born in 1951 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, Senaka Senanayake was destined for artistic greatness. Senanayake found the artist within him when a teacher at school asked him to recap the lesson by drawing on a 20-foot chart paper taped to the wall. What he created was so magnificent that the teacher had to contact his parents and tell them all about the talents that hid in the shy 6-year-old boy.
“My dad had a friend who was the chairman of the Arts Council in Sri Lanka and on one of his visits, he looked at what I was doing and said, ‘Oh, my god. This child has talent. We must encourage the child. So let me organise a show.’ Believe it or not, they organised my first show at the National Art Gallery. So that was a great success. I focused on having fun and enjoying art. Little did I know there were a lot of foreign journalists
who were passing through Sri Lanka who wrote about me.” Little did he know then, what an influential figure he was destined to become in the world of art.
Early fame notwithstanding, the young Senanayake found his exposure in Sri Lanka limited and decided to pursue education at Yale University. "The opportunity to study in the US was a turning point for me," he shares. “It was an eye-opening experience. Out of the graduating class of about 900 students, there were only about 15 foreign students. And from South Asia, there was one boy from India, one from Pakistan, one Indian boy from Kenya, and myself. It was just the 4 of us.”
Reminiscing about his days as a young artist participating in a live painting competition in New York he adds, "There I was, painting live on stage, proving to everyone that the artwork was indeed mine. It was both thrilling and a bit surreal to validate my work in such a public setting.”
Senanayake's artistic prowess blossomed during his time in New York City. Surrounded by the eclectic energy
I am not a politician or a businessman who can make active efforts to preserve. My paintbrush is my weapon on this crusade to save the environment that helps in sparking important conversations.
of the art world, visiting museums and art galleries, he honed his skills, experimenting with various styles and techniques. It was here that he developed his signature aesthetic–a fusion of abstraction and realism, imbued with a deep reverence for the natural world.
For Senanayake, the canvas is a tool for change, a medium through which he can invoke awareness and inspire action. “Growing up with rainforests and nature all around, it made sense for me to focus on environmental preservation.” His art, rich with the colors of nature and teeming with life, does more than capture the eye—it captures the conscience. "Each painting is a part of my crusade to save the environment," he states passionately. "It’s about making people realize that we are leading the world towards an unsustainable future.”
For aspiring artists of tomorrow who wish to change the world with their art, much like Senanayake the celebrated artist
has one piece of advice. “Never run after the commercial aspects of the world of art. First, focus on what you want to convey with that artwork, and what you want the viewer to feel through the artwork. Believe in what you’re doing and money will always follow.”
Senanayake's artistic journey from there on spans over a hundred oneman exhibitions across 18 countries on five continents. His masterpieces grace prestigious spaces like the White House, the UN building in New York, museums, private collections, and corporate headquarters of multinational giants. The Sri Lankan artist’s upcoming exhibition in November in Mumbai, promises not only a feast for the eyes but a call to consciousness.
"Art is not just seen; it is felt, and through it, I hope to make a real difference," Senanayake concludes, his gaze fixed on the horizon of a world he is determined to change, one brushstroke at a time.
With a unique perspective and a lens, visionary photographer Bharat Sikka can bring the most mundane scenes to life. From capturing the nuances of Indian middleclass life to thriving in the global arena, Sikka has carved a unique niche for himself.
With a keen eye for detail and a passion for storytelling, Bharat Sikka’s lens traverses the soul of his subjects, revealing the intricate layers of identity, culture and modernity. In this exclusive interview, Sikka opens up about his artistic journey and the inspirations behind his most compelling projects.
How has your background in fashion and advertising influenced your approach to fine art photography?
Before I went to Parsons, I was working with Prabuddha Dasgupta and that helped me pay my tuition at college.
I'm now 52 years old. I think I started photography when I was pretty young, around 20. I was interested in fashion for a little bit, which drew my attention to fashion photography. I was working with the ace designer Rohit Bal. One day he just asked me to take some pictures for him.
And on seeing them, he said, “There is something when you take your pictures that is really special and you should think about this line of work.
I wanted to attend Parsons School of Design, feeling that I was missing something and needed to study it. Returning from New York, I was keen to start afresh in India, focusing more on fine art and photography, a passion nurtured by my college experience. This was something I genuinely wanted to pursue.
Your photography often captures intimate moments and emotions. What draws you to this style of storytelling?
My father, who served in the Indian army, was posted in various locations, allowing us to travel with him. Though my parents were married, they were never together; he had a girlfriend in Kuala Lumpur, and my mom had someone else in Delhi. Despite this, my father was always there for us,
and I cherished the time spent with him.
Coming from a middle-class family and living alone in New York, I began looking through the lens and realized that no one was focusing on people like my father and uncle.
My first project, begun in my sophomore year of college, was titled 'Indian Men'. This theme has remained relevant throughout my work, as I continue to present India from a unique perspective. Another project, 'Space in Between', involved capturing Gurgaon during the rise of high-rise buildings, highlighting the stark dichotomy of the changing landscape. We had mobile phones but no roads, and a metro but no reliable electricity. While not political, my work captured the social fabric of the country in many ways.
I also worked on a project called 'Where the Flowers Still Grow,' a poetic and melancholic portrait of Kashmir. While politics is inextricable from any point in Kashmir, my intention again, was apolitical. Instead, I aimed to capture the melancholic and sad beauty of the place.
Another deeply personal project was 'The Road to Salvador Do Mundo,' a fairy tale book for my daughter about our homes. My wife was pregnant, and we had just bought a house in Goa. Life there was unique; a man on a bicycle would deliver Pohi, and the bus would stop right in front of our house. The book depicts a small village and how city dwellers transformed it.
In an age dominated by digital photography, what draws you to shooting on film? How does it influence your creative process?
My fourth project, 'Matter,' was akin to a digital diary and marked my first use of a digital camera. The intention was to explore a new world, moving away from conventional film. I documented my life, from my house to my office and everywhere I went. While the project wasn't a success, it allowed me to experiment and served as a bridge between my old and new work.
Looking forward, what new projects or themes are you excited to explore ?
I always strive to evolve in different ways, extending my photography into film, sculpture, and collages, exploring realms far beyond the traditional medium. Photography is just a language I understand deeply, but I can expand it into countless other forms.
One such ongoing project is based on Chandni Chowk, which I plan to turn into a Record LP, incorporating sound and insulation recordings from the area. This extensive project, like many others, has been part of my life for fifteen to twenty years, gradually unfolding over time.
I also publish a photography magazine called Neither, where I've invited fifteen Indian and international artists to collaborate and engage in dialogue.
Through his lens, Sikka invites viewers to explore the nuances of life, prompting a deeper understanding of the diverse world we inhabit.
Artistry runs deep in the veins of the erstwhile Kishangarh royalty, with historical figures like Prince Rajput Savant Singh, an 18th-century patron who left a lasting impact on the region's cultural landscape. Inspired by her ancestors, Princess Vaishnavi has embraced her role as a revivalist and ambassador for Kishangarh’s art. Unafraid to experiment and challenge existing norms, the royal princess is opening new doors for the talented artists of Kishangarh, both nationally and internationally.
Only a few of us might have heard of Kishangarh before. To give some perspective, Kumari shares that the iconic saree worn by the beautiful Nargis Dutt in Mother India was made in Kishangarh. And from thereon, we understand the allure of the beautiful city and everything it stands for.
She founded Studio Kishangarh, after graduating from NIFT, to reignite the passion for art and equip artists with a means of dignified livelihood. The studio sits at the intersection where classic styles intertwine with a contemporary flair.
Strengthening Age-Old Customs with a Contemporary Flair
Coming back to Kishangarh after my graduation felt like a new experience altogether. I was able to recognise the untapped artistic potential in the community. Although the growing marble industry somewhat overshadowed it, a faint echo of arts and crafts existed in the state. I wanted to magnify that echo and give the artist community a distinct voice in the industry.
At Studio Kishangarh, each piece tells a captivating story. The studio began by modernising classical items from the region, like hand-painted clothing and handmade boxes, which hold significant value in the local community, and now are quite popular on the internet as well.
The studio's true transformation occurred during the reflective period of the COVID-19 lockdown. Our focus shifted to the realm of fine arts. The vision was to elevate the status of miniature paintings from mere craftsmanship to revered works of art. One of the most surprising outcomes for me is to watch rural artists’ creativity shine, untouched by global trends.
Back in the 18th century, when India was undergoing the era of a cultural epoch, my ancestor Prince Rajput Savant Singh transformed the way
people enjoyed poetry. Writing in various languages, he dabbled in religious songs and more profound types of poetry. Interestingly, he was not the only art patron in my family. I always felt pulled towards art and founding Studio Kishangarh felt as natural as breathing.
The artists willing to sit and work on miniature paintings are over 35 years old. The biggest challenge on my journey to preserve cultural heritage
is getting the younger artists interested in this art form. Declining attention spans and a desire to pursue modern art is taking away that vigour. Fifteen years ago, there were at least 50 artists in Kishangarh. The number has now dwindled to barely 20-25.
This was the tipping point for me to come up with the idea of establishing community
workshops locally. I wanted to bring fresh talent and infuse newer perspectives into the Kishangarh art form. In addition to this, I believe a dedicated art school would help young ambitious artists. I am formulating the studio's transition to a more stable employment model for artisans. It will help them move away from piece-rate work. The objective is to improve the overall well-being
The biggest challenge on my journey to preserve cultural heritage is getting the younger artists interested in this art form.
I’d like to advise aspiring artists and patrons to embrace their cultural heritage.
of the artists and to refine the quality of the artwork at the same time.
We are greatly optimistic about the continued success of Studio Kishangarh and the art forms it passionately supports. I envision the studio blossoming into a cultural hub that not only supports art but also
encourages education and community building. The next steps are expanding the number of exhibitions we host and potentially establishing an organisation to promote the involvement of women and young individuals. I’d like to advise aspiring artists and patrons to embrace their cultural heritage and constantly seek narratives to express their best through art.
Deciding between private sales and auctions for selling your collection can be challenging.
Each method has its unique advantages. Private sales offer discretion and potentially higher control over pricing, while auctions provide a dynamic platform that can drive up prices through competitive bidding. We take you through the nuances of private sales and auctions, to help you decide which fits better for your art collection.
Any day of the week and any month of the year, that’s how private sales work. They do not follow a traditional calendar. The bid starts high and then gradually comes down to a middle ground. While selling items like jewellery, watches, rare vintages and collectables, private sales go a long way. The buyers are selective, making it an effective way to score quick liquidity.
Private sales generally cost less than a typical
auction setup. The transaction is private. The sales are discreet. It’s a win-win for both the seller and the buyer.

of sneakers to top $1 million in sale value. Crafted out of soft black leather and marked with extensive detailing, the size 12 shoes were designed by West and Mark Smith.
“We are thrilled with the result, which has nearly tripled the highest price on record,” said Brahm Wachter, Sotheby’s head of modern collectables.
Auctions are widely understood by art connoisseurs. Auction of an artwork or collectable can attract potential buyers from across the globe. The bid starts at the lowest price set by a mutual agreement and then goes up based on the bidders who propose a price. Pitting buyers against buyers, auctions are more time-bound. From paying hammer price and performance commissions to shipping and storage fees and selling the item off, it takes a while to complete the transaction and the money to reach your account.
Keeping the collector's interest in mind, Sotheby’s auctioned an ESPN series called 'The Last Dance' in 2023. It fetched a record deal of $2.2 million at the auction, for the Micheal Jordan sneakers, worn by the player during the 1998 NBA finals. Subsequently, Sotheby’s collaborated with Nike and Louis Vuitton. After the sudden and untimely demise of the designer Virgil Abloh, Sotheby’s announced an auction for the prototype of Louis Vuitton Nikes designed by Virgil himself. Considering over 250,000 people visited the website, you can imagine the number and rate of bids that they must have received. Sotheby’s helped in raising $25 million for Virgil Abloh's foundation.
“Well, we look at things, first of all, just where there's collector interest and where we think we can make a market,” says Charles F. Stewart, CEO, Sotheby’s.
l Private sales are, as the name suggests, private, as opposed to an auction which is a more public battle to seize the item you have your heart set on. Inspiring urgency and competitiveness, auctions drive the prices up whereas during private sales, the bid starts up and then comes down gradually to a more reasonable level. With a lesser excitable charge, private sales attract buyers who prefer not to buy under pressure.
l While auctions provide a safety net in terms of offering a reserved price for your article, private sales offer more price control as the rates are usually fixed and then negotiated before a contract is drawn out. Negotiating the contract can take a little while depending on the new offers that come along the way.
l As far as quick liquidity is concerned, private sales can be a promising avenue as compared to auctions where the settlements can take close to a month to be finalised. During private sales, sellers can swiftly reach agreements with buyers and finalise transactions without the need to wait for a scheduled auction event or adhere to the specific timeline dictated by the rules of an auction.
Sotheby’s Auction House needs no introduction. With a legacy of over 280 years, Sotheby’s has been a top player in the auction and private sale endeavours. Guided by the requirements of a seller, Sotheby’s garners the right exposure to the market and provides the reassurance of price control when dealing with private sales. With a fixed, mutually agreed fee and dedicated galleries, Sotheby’s offers personalised services and convenient ways to connect the consignments with prospective buyers internationally.
Sotheby’s also advises the sellers on building their collection, as well as making discreet enquiries and sourcing specific objects by request. Contact one of the Private Sales specialists at Sotheby’s to discover how they can help in developing a collection or finding the right buyer.
In addition to facilitating private sales, Sotheby's offers a range of complementary services, including shipping, insurance, storage, and financing options. While buying, clients can take advantage of these services to streamline the purchasing process and ensure a seamless transaction experience. Thanks to Sotheby's private sales, buyers can access a curated selection of exceptional items that may not be available through public auctions.
From Aspen, Los Angeles, Palm Beach to Brussels, Dubai, Hong Kong, Paris and Zurich, Sotheby’s galleries all across the globe showcase items available for immediate purchase.
Marking a historic success for modern and contemporary South Asian art at Sotheby’s in the last thirty years, The Virginia & Ravi Akhoury Collection was an opportunity for buyers to acquire rare, museum-quality items.
Achieving a total of $ 3.5 million in sales, almost three times the pre-sale estimate, the collection was a testament to Akhourys’ discerning and intuitive eye over the decades of their collecting journey.

If you're a fashion enthusiast and haven't heard of Sunil Sethi, you're definitely living under a rock! Sunil is a visionary in the world of fashion, whose influence goes beyond design to reshaping the industry's very fabric. His career has nurtured emerging talent and celebrated the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship. Join us as we explore the inspiring story of Sunil Sethi, as he continues to draw the contours of contemporary Indian fashion.
In the next five years, Indian fashion and designers will soar to global prominence. People will come to Paris Fashion Week and Italian Trade Shows to specifically see the work of Indian designers.
He may have gained a mop of grey hair, but he still reigns supreme as the poster boy of Indian fashion. Few are aware that Sunil Sethi, the chairperson of the Fashion Development Council of India (FDCI), had a unique professional journey before he assumed the role of elevating Indian fashion on the global stage.
Here’s a little dive into the past. The year was 1988. Having established Alliance Merchandising, Sunil Sethi represented Armani as a buyer during the brand's early days in the Indian market. He was one of the top buying agents for some of the finest stores globally, tasked with sourcing high-quality products from across the country.
In the early 90s, when his friend, the managing director of Selfridges, visited India for New Year's, they hatched an exciting plan: a grand promotion of Indian fashion at Selfridges. Sunil Sethi, along with seventeen designers , headed to London. This event was more than a marketing campaign; it was a bold statement showcasing Indian fashion's potential to captivate international audiences.
The promotion was a star-studded affair. Among the eager crowd stood celebrity figures like Shekhar Kapoor, and the excitement soared when A.R. Rahman made a guest appearance. The Bollywood-themed event, featuring stars like Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan, dazzled London with unparalleled glamour. This groundbreaking celebration of Indian fashion made a strong statement that it cannot be ignored.
In the 1990s when the industry was still in its infancy, this event marked a turning point. Indian fashion designers weren't yet recognized as global brands and were primarily doing trunk shows. The industry lacked structure and organisation. Displaying at Selfridges under their own brand names was a significant milestone for these designers. From Tarun Tahiliani to Rajesh Pratap Singh and Rina Dhaka to Abu Jani, everyone who accompanied Sethi, after that, went on to become prestigious names.
Sunil Sethi wasn't always the fashion guru he is considered today. The FDCI board spotted Sethi’s leadership potential and in 2008, snagged him as their new head honcho. Sethi wasn't about playing by the old rules. He waltzed right in, took charge of fashion week, and turned it into a runway for Indian designers. Foreign buyers, who previously might not have known Delhi from Dhaka, were suddenly flocking to India year after year. This was a sartorial game-changer – Indian fashion was finally on the map!
Fast forward 16 years from that iconic Selfridges push, and according to Sethi, the fashion party is still going strong. Sure, there might not be an army of Indian designers dominating the global scene just yet, but trust me he says, they're making a stir. A-listers are strutting down red carpets like the newly-opened Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre, draped in dazzling creations by homegrown talents like Gaurav Gupta and Rahul Mishra. Forget just runway shows, Indian designers are now jetsetting their designs around the world. They've got their eye on the global market, mastering the art of large-scale production and logistics. Have they conquered fashion week in Paris? Maybe not quite yet, but in Sethi's book, Indian fashion is definitely on the world stage, and it's only going to get bigger and bolder.
Indian fashion, long admired for its vibrant heritage and exquisite craftsmanship, is poised for a momentous leap, asserts Sethi. A strategic infusion of corporate might by entities like Reliance Brands, will be the next gamechanger. “We will soon have stores in key fashion capitals. Our designers like Anita Dongre are already there, and other hand picked designers will also go international. Reliance Brands has big plans for them. They've already launched a Manish Malhotra store in Dubai Mall. They will take Indian designers to Paris next and London, New York soon.”
This eliminates the geographical barrier for the thriving Indian diaspora, who will be able to access coveted Indian designs for those special occasions, be it a red-carpet event or a cherished wedding trousseau. No longer will these celebrations necessitate a trip to India – adds Sethi.
Sunil Sethi concludes our conversation by reminding us, fashion isn't just about glitz and glamour. As a khadi champion, he is also using his influence to promote Indian handloom textiles. So, while our designers conquer international runways, our roots in tradition won't be forgotten.

While many people live life as it comes and hope to find their calling as they go, Anahita Dhondy had her eyes set on becoming a chef when she was just 14 years old. Inspired by her mother’s passion for cooking as she catered and baked cakes, Dhondy knew she was destined to conjure magic in a professional kitchen.
Cooking is not just a passion for chef Anahita Dhondy. She finds moments of solace and snippets of her childhood tucked in the creases of her memories as she recalls the time she realised culinary arts was her calling. “Imagine coming home from school and finding a table full of cakes in different flavours! I was mesmerised and fascinated by how my mother could create deliciousness out of mere ingredients. To a child, it seemed like pure magic," she says.
Born and raised in Delhi to a Parsi family, Dhondy’s upbringing was surrounded by Parsi culture and cuisine. So it came as no surprise when she decided to make Parsi food the hero of her restaurant and give the cuisine the attention it always deserved.
At the young age of 23, Anahita Dhondy launched the first outlet of SodaBottleOpenerWala, a Bombay Irani café that pays homage to Parsi culture and cuisine. Through innovative dishes and creative reinterpretations of classic recipes, Dhondy sought to reignite interest in Parsi's culinary heritage and dispel misconceptions about its complexity. SodaBottleOpenerWala soon became a celebrated restaurant, with its distinctive blend of food, culture and ambience.
This was the start of a long professional career as a consultant that has spanned more restaurants, helping brands find their unique identities and even publishing cookbooks.
While plenty of chefs graduate from hospitality schools every year, only a few unlock the potential of greatness. The secret? Individuality and a unique identity. Dhondy believes every cafe, and every restaurant should be an interesting setting for its food to tell a story.

8. Pack the fish parcels with the help of a toothpick or string.
9. Steam in a rice cooker, or an idli steamer for 15 mins till the fish is cooked.

Tips
l Goes well with a refreshing citrus drink.
l It is a popular Parsi dish, served on many occasions.
l If you don't have a steamer, this can also be poached in hot water provided you have wrapped it tightly to prevent the chutney from coming out.
l The chutney can be refrigerated and used in the next few days also.
l Any kind of fish can be used, but traditionally fish fillets of pomfret are used. Here we are using basa fish.
It's only when the vibe of the place and the food match in synergy that magic happens.
Anahita Dhondy
“It's only when the vibe of the place and the food match in synergy that magic happens. Whether it's because of a fear to experiment or a lingering apprehension that quirky ideas won't make money, there is something stopping culinary geniuses from trying out-ofthe-box ideas."
At the same time, it irks Dhondy how budding chefs aspire to pursue Western cuisine that perhaps seems more elegant and sophisticated when there is so much they can do with Indian spices and ingredients. That's not to say working with Indian cuisine was a cakewalk. She recalls the challenges that came with shining the spotlight on Parsi cuisine and how she persevered to see it through.
“Nobody was open to trying Parsi cuisine until SodaBottle happened. We sent out samplers to customers who came in and I personally went table to table to explain the nuances of each dish. There are so many opportunities to explore and experiment. I urge young chefs to get in touch with their roots and preserve their cultural heritage.”
The Chefs’ Manifesto
Dhondy sets herself apart with her primary focus on Parsi cuisine along with incorporating sustainability in every aspect of her job. “Take millets for example. It's such a tiny grain with such a massive impact. I can go on and on and talk about millet. It's not just nutritious, but it's actually good for the planet and the farmer. So it really works beautifully overall,” she expresses.
In 2018, Dhondy recalls travelling to Stockholm to kickstart The Chefs’ Manifesto, a network of culinary geniuses across the globe who advocate sustainability and zero-waste cooking. Chefs from around the world share innovative ideas to create products, menus, and ingredients that are more sustainable.
The goal of the manifesto is for culinary enthusiasts worldwide to share ideas on how to reduce waste, use local ingredients, and create sustainable recipes that equally consider the environment, farmers, and the planet.
As Dhondy continues to champion Parsi cuisine and sustainable eating, her influence extends beyond the confines of the kitchen. After moving on from SodaBottleOpenerWala in 2020, she set up her own company to help set up new restaurants. Her diverse experience in building a brand from scratch proves invaluable to budding restaurateurs.
Dhondy explains, “We research and develop a brand out of our client's business so that they can find their distinct place in the industry while contributing meaningfully to society.”
From healthy options that satiate hunger to extraordinary combinations that dance on your tastebuds, Dhondy has a way of crafting comprehensive menus. With her forthcoming projects and endeavours, including the launch of her second cookbook, Anahita Dhondy remains at the forefront of culinary innovation.
The Indian Music Experience Museum (IME) supported by the Brigade Group, explores music as a universal language. IME preserves India's rich musical heritage through exhibits and interactive elements. When in Bangalore, you must tune in!
The IME has something for everyone. There are nine rasa or nine galleries that showcase various forms of music and dance. Chairman of the Brigade Group, MR Jaishankar says, "The inspiration behind the Indian Music Experience Museum stemmed from a desire to celebrate and conserve India's rich musical heritage, and to set up a world-class music museum in India. During my travels, I have visited many music museums around the world and being a music aficionado myself, I wanted to set up something similar for Indian music because it hadn’t been done before.”
As you discover India’s music history, through the nine rasa or nine galleries, here’s what you must look out for.
The Galleries
l As you enter ‘The Star’ gallery, you will see the Shehnai of Bismillah Khan, the Tambura of MS Subbulakshmi, and the concert attire of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi. What's more? The gallery features an array of Indian music maestros. l Making our way onto the next one, a gallery called ‘Reaching Out’, showcases a rare phonograph and wax cylinder display,
presenting a photo opportunity with a gramophone set. In addition to this, there is a recording studio too, where you can try your hands at making your own music.
The theme is to trace the journey of sound and music recording. From the gramophone to the mobile phone! As MR Jaishankar expressed, “Indian music has had a profound cultural impact on the world of music, and we wanted to make it accessible and enjoyable for future generations, budding musicians and music connoisseurs alike."
l The next stop can be the ‘Stories through Song’ section which offers a glimpse of different eras of Hindi film music and makes us feel our musical connection, transporting us down memory lane. Presented with some of the iconic background scores and racked with posters of Iconic Hindi movies, this section should not be missed.
l An experience that never fails to ignite a surge of pride and motivation is listening to stirring patriotic songs like Vande Mataram. If that happens to you as well then the next stop is the ‘Songs of Struggle’ gallery. This place has over 35 versions of Vande Mataram!
l Have you seen a Peacock-shaped Mayura Veena or a snake-shaped Nagphani? If not, then the displays at the ‘Instruments Gallery’ will leave you spellbound.
This exhibit has over 100 musical instruments.
l The essence of folk music and dance surely takes us back to our belongings. The gallery called ‘Songs of the People’ shows mechanised puppets, folk art murals, and most importantly the songs and the music from various folk artists.
l Taking us back to the roots, the ‘Living Traditions’ gallery displays the various basic immortal concepts of Hindustani classical and Carnatic music. It shows what Sruti, Raga, Tala, Gharana, Dhrupad, Khayal, and Kutcheri mean.
l Lastly, we set foot in the ‘Contemporary Expressions’ gallery which tantalises our ears with subtle notes of Indi-Pop music. Featuring influencers and icons that changed and crafted the world of Indian Pop and Rock music, this gallery has a mini theatre.
The premises of the Indian Music Experience Center has been to have everything, from an open-air music experience to classes, where one can learn Bharatanatyam, vocals or musical instruments like the tabla. The unique musical installations in the sound garden let people experience, that music can be created even with stones and metals.
Setting up such an exceptional museum had its own
"As founders, we envisioned a dynamic space where visitors could engage with Indian music's history, evolution, and diverse genres. The vision of IME is to introduce the audience especially young people to the depth and diversity of Indian music, so we wanted to create an interactive environment that fosters learning, creativity, and appreciation for Indian music, catering to all age groups".
MR Jaishankar
From new shows and regular presentations to upgraded music experience in each exhibition, the Indian Music Experience Museum is miles ahead of the ordinary setups in the country, making it one of the most successful collectives in India.
challenges. Preema John, Museum Director of IME says, "Curating authentic content on Indian music required intensive research and collaboration with musicologists and artists. Funding the project and ensuring its sustainability was also paramount, demanding strategic partnerships that helped set up a strong cultural institution. The integration of sophisticated technology for interactive exhibits necessitated technical expertise which allowed us to take complex concepts of Indian music like Sruthi, Tala, and Raaga and present them in gamified accessible formats.”
John further shares, “Engaging the local community and building awareness was also crucial for the museum's relevance which now has been open for 5 years and has had over 250,000 in-person visitors. Balancing the presentation of traditional musical forms with contemporary innovations continues to pose a unique creative challenge for us, but our commitment remains unwavering."

From something to pass onto generations to a dearly nostalgic statement piece, perfecting the art of accessorising will elevate your outfit to the next level. Styles that have dominated yesteryears are now influencing ongoing trends. From a simple sleek chain to over-thetop Jorge Adler earrings, men’s jewellery is ever in fashion.
Talking about style, men have always fancied jewellery, even as early as 2,500 BC! Très chic, isn't it? The Egyptians were one of the first ones to thread gold and silver together and so it became a distinguishing symbol of class in the society that they lived in.
Even today, things haven't changed. The spectacle of fashion is not limited to the runway.
The men’s SS 2022 has made us see it all, from men
flaunting pearls to pinups by Ernest W. Baker. No matter how sophisticated or exaggerated, jewellery has continued to be an integral quotient in style. Each piece is quintessentially a story. When buying a new piece, you can think of it as an extension to your ethos or simply to your existing pieces.
With the upcoming trends trying to make streetwear jewellery look more refined, the market is shifting to a younger outlook. Channelling excitement and
creativity, there is a lot to look at and look forward to. A defining shift that separates masculine jewellery from feminine jewellery has further bifurcated the market. At the same time, some versatile pieces are elegantly everlasting. Maisons are focusing on bringing out gender-fluid jewellery collections. Check out these homegrown brands that are bringing the true essence of accessorising to the modern Indian man.

To know more about jewellery upkeep, we reached out to Puja Shah, the founder of MOI who suggests, “Regularly check the prongs holding gemstones, especially in rings and other hand jewellery to ensure that all of them are of equal height as intensive activities can loosen up the stones and it might risk them falling out.” Their Silver Plaque Necklace features a simple and understated silver plaque pendant suspended from a delicate silver chain. The plaque is adorned with a subtle pattern that adds a touch of texture and interest to the piece.
With the upcoming trends trying to make streetwear jewellery look more refined, the market is taking to a younger outlook.
Fine jewellery crafted by hand is akin to an extension of one's self. Caring for it then becomes somewhat like caring for oneself. With proper, intentional care, it will continue to delight for a long time.
Below are some things to look out for and general tips that you can follow to keep your jewellery shining:
l Avoid wearing jewellery during intensive activities because they can cause scratches, breakage, or stone displacement.
l Regularly check the prongs holding gemstones, especially in rings and other
hand jewellery to ensure that all of them are of equal height because intensive activities can loosen them up, and the stones might be at risk of falling out.
l Keep your jewellery away from chemicals, shampoo, soap, and other body products. They can dull and tarnish your jewellery. The metal can also get damaged, readily scratched, or broken.
l Extra care must be taken to not expose gemstones to high temperatures and sunlight as it might change the color of the gemstone or reduce the luster.
l Human natural skin oils affect diamonds and other precious stones and can lead to a loss of luster. Your
jewellery can still get dusty if you do not wear it regularly.
l Gold jewellery can develop a red tarnish due to oxidation with external moisture. Adhesives in commercially available jewellery boxes can also discolor or tarnish your jewellery and are not recommended for storage. You can easily remove it with the help of an eraser. However, as a precaution, keep your jewellery in tidy, dry, fabriclined jewellery boxes. Use a soft fabric to gently wrap each piece of jewellery if you don't have a jewellery box. You can also use silica gel to draw out moisture from the air.

Kolkata is witnessing the revival of a tradition that started in 2002 with performances from top-notch artists, national and international alike. Now, the city hosts a jazz festival every year. Take a deep dive to find what goes into making these jazz clubs iconic, that are reintroducing the city to the enchanting rhythms.
In the vibrant city of Kolkata, the legacy of music runs deep. The city where the Lequime's Grand Hotel Orchestra made history in the 1960s by recording the iconic song "The House Where the Shutters Are Green;” jazz is lately gaining its grounding again. Although jazz originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana, in India
it found its wings to fly unabashed in Kolkata. In the 60s, when Carlton Kitto was hosting his musical evenings at the Oberoi Grand in Kolkata, jazz was gradually seeping into his rhythmic notes.
Here are some cool places that are keeping jazz alive in Kolkata and celebrating the footprint of the melody.
Given Kolkata’s penchant for nostalgia, and the inherent feel good in memories well done, it is only ever a matter of time before the circle of taste revolves back to everything we once loved. Jazz at Trincas is the perfect soundtrack for nostalgia.
By now you must have heard Usha Uthup singing Miley Cyrus’ Grammy-winning song Flowers. A treat to the ears! The mind-blowing performance was patronised by Trincas, a jazz club in Kolkata where the singer performed the song live. Since the 1960s, Uthup has been a regular performer at Trincas, drawing music enthusiasts from far and wide. The jazz club is famous for its Weekend Jazz Lunches and the meals are complementary with the entry tickets. Trincas might have come into the spotlight once again after Usha Uthup’s recent performance but Kolkata is very well acquainted with the power of Jazz in creating a magical evening.
Celebrating icons of Jazz, AMPM Kolkata has paid homage to the legendary musicians Miles Davis and John Coltrane, whose contributions to the jazz genre left an indelible mark on the world of music. The establishment tries to exude an ambience that transports guests back to the Victorian era. Mahogany furnishings, plush upholstery, and antique décor pieces add to the nostalgic atmosphere. Park Street’s latest addition, AMPM imbibes refinement and sophistication. From aromatic coffee beverages crafted by skilled baristas to an array of expertly mixed cocktails, there's something to tantalize every taste bud. But their truffle and parmesan baby smashed potatoes and yakitori chicken wings are staple orders by the regulars at the club. AMPM has become the go-to place for people to chill and have a good time.
We did a recce of all the famed clubs of Kolkata and wanted to create a space that is easily accessible, does not require the hassle of a membership.
We actually spent quite a lot of time in jazz clubs in Bangkok and Kuala Lumpur, talking to musicians. We have realised that we have a gamut of avenues for artists to come, jam and maybe bring other musicians.

3. Skinny Mo’s
As you glide your way halfway up the stairs, your ears will be greeted by a faint jazz and laughter murmur. The wintry Sundays in Kolkata can be spent at the Skinny Mo’s Jazz Club. Sometimes a surprise as good as the German jazz band Jo awaits you. Cosy, warm and intimate, Skinny Mo’s brings a slice of jazz that resonates off its exposed brick walls. Gaze up at the stars through an imposing large skylight while the walls are stark, the lights warm. An old 1950s Art Deco building in South Kolkata is the home of this modern yet iconic jazz club.
