The record for making the largest mosaic portrait, with Chess pieces was set by Abaasaheb Uttam Shewale. The mosaic portrait, measuring 30 ft × 20 ft of MS Dhoni, was made using 1,41,000 Chess pieces. He painted the Chess pieces in six different colours. Talking to the India Book of Records, Abaasaheb shares his inspiration and struggles while making the record.

1. Tell us something about yourself? I was passionate about art since I was a child, and I continue to cultivate that passion. By profession, I am an animator, but at heart, I am an artist.

2. How many people participated in this artwork? A total of 30 members were working, all from different professional backgrounds. We divided the work into six groups, each team comprised of 5 people.

3. What inspired you to make this record? I got inspiration from Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s life and achievements.

4. What challenges did you face? Well, challenges are part and parcel of life. No matter how much you plan, one has to face them. I, too faced challenges, while executing the artwork. I had ordered the chess materials from Delhi, and it was supposed to arrive by road in 3 days, but the materials arrived 12 days later. So I had to order by air, which increased my cost. As the materials were in large quantity, it was simultaneously under production and we received it in 3 parts. To compensate for the time loss we worked both day and night shifts to complete the artwork in 14 days.

5. For how long you planned this record? Six months of long planning.
