YOU SAID “YES”

to your soulmate. The engagement ring is on your finger, and it glitters and gleams like nothing you’ve ever seen. At the same time, your head is swimming. You now need to plan the wedding of your dreams. And it must be authentic and original, telling the story of you and your partner. There are many ways to customize your big day. We have the scoop on how you can create a ceremony that is truly special and memorable, down to the smallest details.

THE GRAND SCHEME BENJAMIN FRANKLIN ONCE SAID, “A failure to plan is a plan to fail.” Any fairy-tale event starts with finding a great planner and putting together a blueprint for the happiest day of your life. Lora Pennington with Magical Moments Event Planning has seen it all when it comes to adding extra touches to a wedding that make it a one-of-a-kind experience. Pennington says her goal from the beginning is to help the bride and groom create a vision for their preferred aesthetic. It starts with research: How did you meet? What hobbies and passions do you share? “My team creates an inspiration board for each couple,” she says. “We pull together things we find on Pinterest, magazine photos, and previous wedding photos to help build your vision.” She says her team also creates a décor board to identify the best matches for your theme and preferred color scheme, which helps during the process of reaching out to rental companies. “I’m always learning,” she says. “If I have to make it myself, it’ll happen.” Pennington

recently constructed 100 origami-boat escort cards as part of a nautical-themed ceremony and reception. “My team had to learn origami from YouTube,” she explains with a grin. “Any theme you can think of, we can bring it to life.”

IDEAL LOCATION WHERE YOU SAY “I DO” is another way to showcase your singular love story. Do you want to tie the knot in a church, a restaurant, a banquet hall, a park, or maybe someplace more off the beaten path? Kimberly Miller with Rick’s Boatyard Café says the venue strives to create a special and unique experience for every occasion. For starters, couples can choose a gazebo overlooking Eagle Creek or even the balcony of the restaurant as a scenic spot to wed. “The view is unbeatable,” she says. Miller says the staff can modify all aspects of the ceremony and reception, including a cocktail hour before the meal. “We had a wedding where guests could take in the view,

Your Day, Your Way All the experts quoted in this article offered a few pieces of simple advice: GET AHEAD OF THE GAME: You will have more flexibility to plan the fully customized day of your dreams by starting far in advance. Many vendors recommend between nine months and two years when selecting a date.

BE ADAPTABLE: You may have your heart set on a perfect venue. If the site is not available when you want it, you will need to find an alternate location or be willing to change your timeline.

THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX: The most memorable nuptials are the ones that put a couple’s creativity on full display. It could be as simple as picking a unique favor for your guests, like a disposable camera at every table, or replacing the wedding cake with various cupcakes for guests to choose.

TAKE OWNERSHIP: Finally, and maybe most importantly, remember that your wedding day is all about you and your partner. Take the liberty to personalize whatever you like to make it a distinctive celebration of your union.

enjoy a drink, and munch on hors d’oeuvres while the bridal party took photos before the reception,” she explains. “The guests could walk the grounds of our campus and really experience the beauty of Eagle Creek before the meal.” Bridal parties can amp up their ceremonies a notch by planning a dramatic entrance. “We had a couple arrive by horse and carriage,” Miller says. “They took a ride and did photos along the banks of the creek and then the bride was dropped off at the gazebo for the ceremony.” The restaurant can also create a banquet menu suited to your tastes and preferences. “We offer high-quality food that is fresh and never frozen,” Miller explains. “Our seafood is flown in to Eagle Creek Airport. Our chef 24

goes out of his way to elevate each dish so our guests feel like they’ve dined in a very expensive way, but with a more affordable price tag.” She says they can do everything from tapas plates to lobster tail and filets, depending on the couple’s style and desires.

MAKING SPACE HOW YOU DECORATE

and accentuate your venue is another way to set your ceremony apart. The general theme you choose or specific color combination you and your future spouse adore can prep the stage for your reception atmosphere. Chung Chow with A Classic Party Rental says many couples want unique linens and service items. “Their choice plays

a big factor in the overall look,” Chow says. “Couples can come in and see a mock place setting before they make their final decision.” Tables and chairs can be customized and accented with vibrantly colored fabrics as an extension of the color scheme. Chow describes a particularly memorable event at which chair sashes were made out of woven material to give the space a bohemian feel. “We can tie sashes in a million different ways,” Chow says. They also work closely with florists to enhance the novelty of the table décor. A Classic will go the extra mile to create a look that’s out of the ordinary with everything from china to place settings to silverware. Chow joked that a couple could even opt for a chicken-finger bar with a ranchdressing fountain.

PICTURE PERFECT YOUR WEDDING PHOTOS

provide a prime opportunity to get creative and show off your individual personalities. Veteran photographer Heather Sherrill says she meets with the bride and groom early in the process to find out everything she can about them. “I want the photos to paint the picture of the beginning of this couple’s life together,” she says. “I want it to be as genuine and authentic as possible.” It’s important to recognize that these photos will someday be treasured heirlooms passed down through generations. Sherrill says couples can illustrate their stories starting with the engagement photos. She mentions a newly engaged couple who wanted pictures snapped where they met—in this case, Brothers Bar & Grill in Broad Ripple. On the big day, Sherrill says she is constantly on “tear patrol” to capture touching, emotional moments throughout the day. She says many couples opt to involve their pets in the pictures, including dogs wearing bow ties or tiny tuxedos. Sherrill says the sky is truly the limit in most regards.

Sherrill offers several basic image packages, but couples can pick and choose options depending on their needs and budget. “Each wedding is unique in its own way,” she says. “I want to be able to paint a beautiful picture of their love story and their special day.”

READY FOR LAUNCH LET’S SAY YOU’RE A COUPLE who wants to add an element of dramatic flair to the celebration. If you wish to kick off your marriage with

a boom, one way to make a bold, impactful statement is to include fireworks during the ceremony or reception. Mose Nasser is a Terre Haute–based pyrotechnical expert who makes extra sparks at weddings—in a very literal sense. Nasser says his light demonstrations can range from a few seconds during the first kiss to a fullscale, 15–20 minute show. “Really, we can do just about anything,” he says. “Hearts, smiley faces, fountains of sparks.” Nasser’s favorite display was created for a U.S. Army veteran. He says the color scheme was patriotic, and the ceremony itself was held on July Fourth. “We collaborated with the photographer to make sure the couple left for their honeymoon with a big bang,” he explains. The wedding featured a pyrotechnics array in red, white, and blue. “We can tailor the fireworks show to your budget,” he says. “At the end of the day, it’s just one more way to make your wedding unique.” However, he does want to remind couples that fireworks can only be displayed outdoors for safety reasons.
