ON THE MOVE
Deals on Wheels Indy’s mobile family just got a lot more stylish
first, food went on the road and traveled the streets of Indianapolis, serving up pizza to pierogis. Now food trucks’ pretty sisters have rolled into town, bringing to shoppers clothes, accessories, gifts, and even treats for our four-legged friends. After the success of a pop-up shop during Super Bowl XLVI, Retro101 (@ShopRetro101) owner Heather Pirowski decided that she wanted “to be where the people are” and bought Ellie, the school bus named after her grandmother. She offers current trends and locally made products: graphic sweaters, printed leggings, chic handbags, fun jewelry, and gift items. Others, like Lesley Jean Saligoe of Yessiree Petunia (@YessireePetunia), didn’t want the pressure of the hours that a brick-and-mortar store requires. All Saligoe needs is two parking spaces—one to set up a jewelry-filled table or a clothing rack and the other to house her 1968 Scotty Tonga trailer. Her business touts everything vintage, giving shoppers frocks, jewelry, and other finds from the ’50s to the early ’90s. “I really love offering dresses that look great with boots or booties—such a fun way to transition into fall, with a pair of cute tights, of course,” Saligoe says. Amy Morse wanted to give small businesses more exposure, so her Bizzy’s Boutique (@Fol lowBizzy) highlights 20 local artisans who sell children’s items, gourmet popcorn, headbands, vintage-like jewelry, purses, and home decor, among other finds. Redemption boutique owner Amber Davis Huber and lifelong friend Mary-Catherine Miller created Boho Pretty (@BohoPretty) to bring trendy and inexpensive styles to college

towns, street festivals, and charity events, as well as random “stop and shops.” She eventually wants to add refurbished furniture to her inventory. This season, expect to find oversized sweaters, printed leggings, and statement necklaces. Tasha Johnson went mobile for a fun and exciting adventure. Her truck, Urban Frenzy (@UrbanFrenzy), carries both casual and dressy apparel in a broad range of sizes with a feminine edge, perfect for a girls’ night out or date night. Eventually, Johnson wants to use her truck as a means to donate school supplies to girls in need. With everyone getting caught up in this new fashion scene, Lisa Moyer wanted to make sure man’s best friend didn’t miss out. Not only is the pet industry thriving but so are food trucks, Moyer says, so she combined the two and established Bark Truck (@FollowBarkTruck). Offerings include dog toys and treats, dog beer and ice cream, and pet accessories. Next year, Moyer plans to offer pet parties, dog-sitting services, memorials, and the “everyday dog” canine show. “We want to take everyday dogs that have imperfect ears and teeth and just have a lot of fun with it,” Moyer says. Whether it’s food or fashion, Pirowski acknowledges that they are all just a “crazy mobile family”—one that has all the signs of continued growth. As Moyer says, “It’s the hardest I’ve ever worked, and the most fun I’ve ever had.” —allison scarlott

1 GOOD BUYS
Big-Name Bargains A little searching can yield top labels for much less than retail
in search of a new designer purse or a dress with a famous label? You might do well to head to local consignment shops and estate jewelers, which can carry top-of-theline goods in gently used or new condition. And the prices? Some items can be yours for more than 50 percent off. Here are three of our suggestions for great furniture, jewelry, and clothing finds. 1 Furniture: Backroom at West Clay Mark Roger runs this consignment furniture store, which carries current-day, midcentury modern, and Art Deco styles. Brands include Thomasville, West Elm, and Barbara Cosgrove. One couple drives in from Cincinnati every month to see what
36 IM | SHOPS 2013
new merchandise Roger has in store. He recently acquired a Thomasville kingsize sleigh bed made of white ash burl, which retails for $2,800, but Backroom priced it at $1,050. See listing, page 74. 2 Jewelry: G. Thrapp Jewelers Owner Gary Thrapp loves estate jewelry, and so do his customers. He carries everything from opera glasses made in the 1900s to ashtrays owned by the Duke of Windsor. With the remake of The Great Gatsby, pieces from the Art Deco period have been especially popular with clients. Thrapp says that estate jewelry appeals to those who appreciate history. What’s important, he points out, is “not just the time it was made—it was who owned it.” See listing, page 68. 3 Clothing: Butterfly Consignment Need a Louis fix? Head to Butterfly Consignment (see listing, page 62), where you can find a Louis Vuitton signature duffle for $749 (retail: $1,900). Manager Codi Perry recalls a leather trench coat from Gwen Stefani’s L.A.M.B. line. “It was like something off Project Runway,’’ she says. The item sold the next day for about half its retail price. “The more unique the item, the faster it goes,” Perry says. —Zina Kumok
Butterfly Consignment’s Codi Perry recalls a woman who consigned a vintage Louis Vuitton luggage set, the pieces of which were priced around $1,000 or more. “They looked like they hadn’t been used,” Perry says.
Lynn Burrows, owner of The Toggery (see listing, page 64), notes a pair of classic quilted Chanel bags that came in recently. Their retail price was $3,600; she sold them for $1,200. “All you have to do is put them on Facebook, and they’re gone the same day.”
After featuring an $8,000 painting by Italian artist Nicola Simbari on a segment for FOX59, Backroom’s Mark Roger sold the work within 24 hours to a woman who had seen the spot on TV and purchased it over the phone.
Gary Thrapp still remembers one of his favorite pieces: a pair of 1910 Cartier platinum-diamond chandelier earrings made in Paris. “When I saw them from another dealer in St. Louis, I bought them immediately,” he says.

light fixtures we won’t keep you in the dark: These spots are great places to browse when looking for interesting and unusual lighting. Bathroom and kitchen sets can be dominating pieces. Yet walking into Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery inside the Indiana Design Center (see listing, page 71), it’s the hundreds of light fixtures hanging from the ceiling and on the walls that capture the eye. With the number of items on hand in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, the showroom truly has something for everyone. You’ll find traditional brushed-bronze fixtures; modern, more geometric lines, including the minimalistic offerings of Sonneman; high-impact, glittering crystal chandeliers, and an impressive selection of outdoor styles, too.
Houseworks (above; see listing, page 76) strives to provide the best in modern fur-
niture and home decor. When it comes to lighting, it offers a variety of innovative and functional pieces, such as the popular Tolomeo from Artimede, whose simple lines are seen in a range of colors and sizes to either perch on a desk or set on the floor. But not everything is so obviously modern. The store also features pieces that could be incorporated into other styles, such as the handmade wooden Muto hanging lamp from Cerno and the Jellyfish light composed of delicate floating glass bubbles. The fixtures at Form + Function (see listing, page 74) are more than mere lighting—they’re sculptures that illuminate. The store specializes in modern and contemporary styles from designers around the world. From Munich, designer Ingo Maurer creates structured yet delicate lamps from rice paper. A hanging piece from Dutch designer Marcel Wanders looks simple on its black exterior, but view it from underneath to see intricate carvings of vines and flowers. Italian architect Ettore Sottsass’s Treetop floor lamp looks like it came straight from a modern-art museum with its geometric shapes and bright colors. These pieces are not simply bulb holders, but artwork that can become an integral part of your home’s design. —lindsey gelwicks

special-occasion gifts life’s milestones require the appropriate show of congratulations. So whether you’re celebrating a marriage, an anniversary, or a birth, these stores have you covered for the ideal present. At Charles Mayer & Co. (see listing, page 90), beautiful objets beckon from every display. William Yeoward’s glassware is perfect for toasting a couple’s new life together (we especially like the colorful Vita collection or the oversized Lillian champagne flutes). And you can’t go wrong with anything by L’Objet, like its new Malachite line in striking emer-
ald green, or Reed & Barton, which offers a great selection of glassware and sterling-silver trays. For new moms, the store has baby cups by Lunt and Reed & Barton, which can be engraved, and super-soft baby blankets you might just want to keep for yourself. And for guys, bottle openers made from tennis racquet and golf club handles or an Italianpewter tray by Match, ideal for his watch and other accoutrements, show sentiment without the frou-frou. Expect a colorful selection from Julia Knight, whose decorative bowls, dinnerware, and serving trays subtly shimmer from an enamel-and-pearl coating. A long row of shelves on the back wall holds a host of glass items: minimalistic barware by Badash and Amici, vibrantly colored Blenko Glass pieces, and the work of Peggy Karr, most of which features bright flowers. The high-end labels at Saks Fifth Avenue (see listing, page 107) continue in its third-floor home section. Shoppers are

conversation starters it’s your home’s equivalent of a fabulous necklace: a statement piece that makes visitors stop, stare, and wonder where in the world you found such a thing. Start here. If you love the style of Mad Men, then downtown’s Meridian (see listing, page 80) is the place for you. One step inside, and you immediately feel out of this decade, with good reason—all of the pieces in the corner shop come from between the 1940s and ’60s. A vinyl orange couch and brightred fabric chair stand out in the room with midcentury tables, cabinets, chairs, lamps, and
desks interspersed between them. If you’re not in the market for furniture, then Meridian also offers a variety of modern artwork, sculptures, and other items from the time, such as a replica black-and-white George Nelson Kite Clock. With a Mark Twain statue lounging on a bronze bench right outside the doors, Urban Styles Furniture (see listing, page 78) pronounces its originality before you even go inside. The store isn’t afraid to take risks in its inventory with pieces like a large gorilla statue, a naval searchlight (Batmanstyle, if you will) from the Suez Canal, and a life-sized Elvis

dancing on a bar. But its truly interesting pieces—and what makes up most of its offerings—are those that have been recycled and reclaimed, such as a chair fashioned from radiators and a glass coffee table with a ship propeller instead of legs. Like the 100-plusyear-old spiraled “staircase to nowhere” that was pulled from a house in Belgium about to be demolished, many pieces have stories that you’ll be dying to ask about. to bottom with stately furniture, intricate lamps and chandeliers, and interesting accent pieces, many of which you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere in Indy. Take, for instance, the multi-bottle wine chiller in the shape of a large crown, the wall-mounted anchor coat rack, and the ornately carved German grandfather clock from the mid-19th century. You’ll see a carved wooden mirror from around 1910 and a large circular light fixture covered in sturdy burlap. And if you happen to be in the market for a pair of concrete sheep (really, who isn’t?), look no further than Surroundings. —l.k. and l.g.

for your next get-together, you could pick up a deli platter and several bottles of wine from your everyday grocery store, but we’d like to suggest stopping into one of these culinary hotspots instead. At Grapevine Cottage (see listing, page 84), “The Wine Guy” Doug Pendleton and his staff know their way around the 1,000-plus bottles stocked at the deceptively large Zionsville location. You know what you’re imbibing is good: The store doesn’t stock anything rated 85 or below by top wine publications. Even better, few bottles will set you back more than $20. But it’s not just about the vino here. Selections include Indiana-made eats, like jams, salsas, and barbecue sauces; highly rated local and domestic craft beers; and fresh meats and cheeses. Applewood bacon, garlic sausage, and elk pate from Smoking Goose are popular picks, and authentic British cheese varieties, such as Cotswold, Wensleydale, and White Stilton, have proven to be hot sellers. Goose the Market (see listing, page 84) employs foodies who are as passionate about your dinner as you are. Upstairs, an always-changing selection of domestic and imported cheeses made from goat, cow, and sheep milk entices customers. Meat
choices vary, too, but customer favorites are the snout-to-tail “kitchen sink” pork sausage and the lamb bacon—a tasty upgrade to your BLT. The Tour, a cheese-and-charcuterie platter that comes with Amelia’s Bread, lets you sample at $10 per person. The lower-level Enoteca stocks about 60 constantly rotating wines (most are $20 and less), a solid variety of seasonal local beers, and a supply of foods you didn’t know you needed, like bourbon vanilla sorghum, spaghetti made with squid ink, and the market’s own sweet-andsavory popcorn mix created with local fave Just Pop In. The five-year-old Mass Ave Wine Shoppe (see listing, page 86) is best known for its Wall of Wines, a slate of more than 100 bottles mostly under $15. It prides itself on carrying labels you probably haven’t tried— like the small-batch Breadwinner by Stage Left, of which only 300 cases are made each year— and on coaxing customers out of their wine comfort zone. Selections change often, but all wines are sampled before making their way to the wall. You’ll also find craft beers and spirits, as well as freshly made pizzas, sandwiches (the Croque Merman features housemade caramelized onion, apple, and ginger chutney) and tasting platters with several choices of meats and cheeses. —l.k.
area rugs JOSEPH’S ORIENTAL RUG IMPORTS
FINE ESTATE ART & RUG GALLERY
ROYAL GALLERY OF RUGS
rugs can dramatically change the look of a room, adding color, pattern, and texture to any space. Looking for the perfect one? These three galleries can help. Walking into Joseph’s Oriental Rug Imports (see listing, page 82) is like venturing into an indoor version of a Turkish open-air market with stacked rugs on the floor and rolled up and lined against the walls. When Joseph’s opened in 1949, it focused solely on antiques. But over the years, it’s grown to include more fashion-forward pieces that keep shoppers returning. Owner Michael Joseph stands behind the belief that a well-made rug is the foundation and starting point for the design of any room. His variety ranges from traditional handmade Oriental rugs to the more modern felt rugs of Liora Manne. And if you have a rug that you love but it’s showing a little wear and tear, Joseph’s offers full restoration and repair services. David Farahan, owner of Royal Gallery of Rugs (see listing, page 82), certainly knows rugs. And he should, since his family has been in the business since 1888. Flipping through the grand selection of Oriental to contemporary styles hanging from the ceiling, he’ll point out the tiny details, such as the variations of colors
created from one vegetable dye, the difference between wool and silk strands, and how variances in lighting can change the silk details from yellow to gold. Its inventory of handmade rugs comes from Iran, Afghanistan, India, China, Pakistan, Nepal, and Turkey. And if you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, the pros here will custom-design a style. One of the promotional fliers from Fine Estate Art & Rug Gallery (see listing, page 82) boasts that shoppers can find an “unusually laid-back art and rug shopping experience.” That’s no lie. Historic Indiana artwork covers the walls, and more than 1,200 handmade rugs lie in stacks across the floor at Fine Estate, which aims for a pressureless shopping experience. Fine Estate originated as a rug store, but then owner Curt Churchman transitioned into selling artwork and offering framing services after he shared a space with someone who sold art. Each of the rugs, whether it’s a traditional Oriental or a more modern style, is handmade— the older ones coming from estate auctions across the U.S., and the newer ones imported from countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, India, and Nepal. Churchman has a wide range of sizes, from small to fit for a palace. —l.g. SHOPS 2013 | IM 49
