Decorators’ Show House and Gardens
Welcome to the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s 58th Annual Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. It is our pleasure to have you join us for a tour of this unique property in the Washington Park neighborhood. We hope that you will enjoy your experience today, as your visit continues the tradition of “The Country’s LongestRunning Show House Event.” The Guild members, designers, and landscapers spend months laying the groundwork for each show house. In January, we take possession of the property, and the work begins. This year’s 34 designers and landscapers are putting their designs into action, transforming empty rooms into masterpieces and bare outside areas into lush gardens and open-air living spaces. While respecting the heritage and style of this historic residence, our designers look to designs and trends that will also accommodate a modern-day active family. As you tour the house and grounds, please follow along in this program. The areas are listed, numbered, and described in the order in which you will see them. There is helpful information on each page, including designer information, paint color names, and names of contractors used by the designer. We hope that you will find an area or two that inspires you to go home and give one of your own rooms a new look. Of course, you can always make an appointment with one of our designers! The Guild volunteers, our dedicated designers, and our landscape professionals make this springtime tradition possible. Willingly jumping into this effort are many loyal businesses, vendors, and contractors, as well as many others who offer special services. We encourage you to look at their advertisements and logos in this program. We hope that you will visit their places of business. Without their support, the Guild would not be able to carry out a project of this scope to benefit Eskenazi Health. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s mission is to raise funds for the programs and services of Eskenazi Health. It is a Level I Trauma Center, and everyone in the community benefits from its organizational skills in the event of any public disaster. The men and women of Eskenazi offer superior heathcare for all, regardless of ability to pay. We are proud to support Eskenazi Health and its contribution to the entire community. As you explore the beautifully decorated rooms, remember that many of the items are available for purchase. Each room has a price list of items for sale. Landscapers may also have plantings available for purchase. Contact individual designers and landscapers for your purchases. After your tour of the house and grounds, we invite you to visit our Show House Shops and to have lunch or a snack at Café Maggie. Thank you for attending the 58th Annual Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. We hope you enjoy your visit and look forward to making it your yearly tradition.

Eskenazi Health Patient Testimonals
Anna Kirkman – St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Diagnostic Breast Center Three years ago, Anna Kirkman found out that she was BRCA1 positive. According to the National Cancer Institute, women in the general population have about a 12 percent chance of getting breast cancer; BRCA1 carriers have a 55 to 65 percent chance of developing breast cancer. Anna’s grandmother died at the age of 39 from breast cancer and her cousin was diagnosed at the age of 36. Anna was 29 years old when she found out she was predisposed to the same diagnosis She immediately started routine monitoring – mammograms and MRIs once or twice per year. A couple of years later, Anna became pregnant with her first child. While she was pregnant and nursing, she did not undergo routine imaging. After a 15-month hiatus, she resumed the standard monitoring and went in for a mammogram and MRI. Both tests came back abnormal and she was scheduled for two biopsies the following week. Her mind raced. She could not help but think of her now 9-month-old son. Anna’s biopsies were scheduled in the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Breast Center at Eskenazi Health. The greeter knew something was wrong when Anna showed up for another appointment a week after the imaging. She gave her a hug. “They made me feel cared for and like I had the support of the whole team,” Anna explained. Dr. Patterson, the breast radiologist, knew Anna was worried, and she worked to get the results back as quickly as possible. “She thought about how I was feeling,” Anna acknowledged. “Dr. Patterson demonstrated real empathy.” Thankfully, both of Anna’s biopsies were negative. She credits the care she received from the whole team at the breast center with helping her through that stressful time. “The St. Margaret’s Guild Breast Center is wonderful. From the woman who escorts people back, to the techs (Tina and Marla), to Dr. Patterson and Dr. Howell, I was really impressed with their attention to detail and focus on customer service. They were gentle, kind, patient and focused on doing things right, even when certain procedures were technically challenging. They kept me informed every step of the way during my imaging and subsequent biopsies. And they really know how to work together as a team. I would recommend the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Diagnostic Breast Center to anyone.”

Tyler Wilson – Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center and Prescription for Hope Tyler Wilson was admitted to the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center in 2015, after being shot in the leg. He was referred to the Prescription for Hope program. “The program has kept me motivated,” Tyler explained. Prescription for Hope provided Tyler with food vouchers, transportation assistance, and emotional support throughout his recovery. Tyler worked tirelessly with the goal of being able to provide for his family again. “I knew there would be setbacks and with every success, there’s probably going to be a setback. It’s the same for everyone who has found themselves in the situation of trying to get their lives on track,” Tyler explains. Despite those setbacks, Tyler has never given up. He admits he has been frustrated at times and has faced many challenges, including resolving residual legal issues, finding employment, and becoming a father. Tyler acknowledges that “I had to change the way I think about issues I deal with.” Tyler recently earned his commercial driver’s license, graduated at the top of his class, and has had several job offers. He credits the staff of the Smith Level I Shock Trauma Center for helping him heal physically and Eskenazi Health’s Prescription for Hope program for helping him heal mentally and emotionally.

are you interested in joining st. margaret’s hospital guild? St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is a volunteer organization comprised of dedicated women who are committed to raising funds for programs and services of Eskenazi Health. For the past 58 years, this has been accomplished by hosting the annual Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. The proceeds support some of the neediest of our neighbors. A group of dynamic women have fun serving on various Guild committees and participate in Decorators’ Show House and Gardens assignments. Members who work together develop lifelong friendships while raising funds for Eskenazi Health. For more information about membership, please email: decoratorshowhouseinfo@gmail. com or ask any host or hostess at the Show House or in Café Maggie. We would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have and share the St. Margaret’s story. mission statement St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, Inc. is a volunteer organization committed to raising funds for the services and programs of Eskenazi Health.
St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild
was founded in 1907 by five women who formed a nonsectarian guild to provide care and support to Indianapolis’ City Hospital patients through direct service and fundraising projects. The Guild’s mission is the same today; only the name of the hospital has changed. Starting as City Hospital in 1855, the hospital has been known as Indianapolis General Hospital, Marion County General Hospital, Wishard Memorial Hospital, and today we all know it as Eskenazi Health. People often ask how the name of the Guild was chosen. St. Margaret, the daughter of ninth-century Prince Edward of Scotland, worked with the sick, the orphans, and the poor. Each year since 1962, St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has organized the refurbishing of a classic home, opened the home for a two-week public tour, and donated the proceeds to Eskenazi Health. Since the Guild’s founding in 1907, it has raised over $13 million for Eskenazi Health, supporting the patients and professionals at our city’s public hospital. Proceeds from the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens allow SMHG to provide equipment for patients at Eskenazi Health. With your help, the Guild has funded the Burn Unit, sponsored two mobile mammography clinics, allowed for department renovations, initiated the Mother’s Milk Bank, and provided “Protecting Our Children” materials. SMHG has provided summer group therapy at Midtown Children’s Center, underwritten childbirth classes focusing on areas of highest infant mortality, purchased golf carts to help patients navigate the hospital campus, and supported the Haven of Hope. The Guild has helped build raised garden beds for patients’ use at the Sky Garden, supported Healthy Me for children, funded the Limestone Falls at the Commonground, and purchased an eight-vehicle fleet, including two ADA-accessible vans for use by Eskenazi Midtown Mental Health. Funds earned from the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens also provided support for the Sandra Eskenazi Center for Brain Care Innovation. Most recently, the Guild has pledged to support the Center for Nursing Excellence at Eskenazi Health. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is proud to be one of the pioneer volunteer groups in the City of Indianapolis. We are grateful to the designers, landscape architects, sponsors, individuals, corporations, and donors of in-kind services who make this annual event possible.

A History of 4160 Washington Boulevard
The Tudor Revival house at 4160 Washington Boulevard was built in 1919 by Clark E. Mallery and Roberta Spellman Mallery. Mr. Mallery was one of the founders of the American Garment Company, a manufacturer of women’s clothing. The architectural firm hired to design the 9,163-square-foot home and supervise its construction was that of Preston C. Rubush and Edgar O. Hunter. Established in 1905 and active until 1939, the company designed more than 250 structures during its 34 years of existence, including the Circle Theatre, Columbia Club, Indiana Theatre, Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum, and the Madam C. J. Walker Building, as well as numerous residences. The north side of the house was built on an angle to save a mature tree that stood in the path of the north wing of the house. This angled design feature makes the house unique among the many grande dames that were built in the Meridian-Kessler and Butler-Tarkington neighborhoods during this time period. In 1922, the Mallerys sold the property to Abram Lazarus Block, a merchant who was also active in numerous community affairs and charitable organizations. Mr. Block was the owner and president of L. Strauss & Co., an upscale men’s clothing store. In addition, he was the founder of the Circle Theatre, part owner of the Indiana Theatre, and chairman of the board of the company that built the Circle Tower Building. He and his wife, Rachel Fischel Block, purchased the residence for their only child, Miriam Block Lyon and her family. The Blocks’ granddaughter, Alma Block Lyon, was the only child to live in the residence during its first six decades of existence. In 1928, Woodbury Treat Morris and Mary Florence Malott Morris became the third owners of the property. Woodbury was the Indiana representative of the Domhoff and Joyce Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mrs. Morris was the daughter of Volney Thomas Malott, president of Indiana National Bank. Newspaper accounts of the day indicate that many lavish parties were held in the home during their residency. In 1958, Samuel Patrick Solomon and Opal Stillwell Solomon became the fourth owners of 4160 Washington Boulevard. Mr. Solomon owned the Wilson Furniture Company for 40 years. His wife continued to operate the company after his death. In 1978, Thomas Francis Skehan and Ann Theresa Reynolds Skehan purchased the home from Mrs. Solomon. Mr. Skehan was a manager at Union Carbide Co. The Skehans’ children were the first to live in the home since Alma Block had left, half-a-century earlier. It was during this period that 4160 Washington Boulevard was first featured as the Decorators’ Show House. A rendering of the residence by KP Singh was done for the cover of the 1980 program. In 1983, Max and Barbara Danner became the sixth owners of 4160 Washington Boulevard. Mr. Danner was the chairman of the board and CEO of Danners, Inc.. He died in 1985. Barbara has lovingly maintained the house longer than any of the other five homeowners. She, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren continue to enjoy the house today. In 2008, the area in which the home is located, Washington Park, was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes the properties from the north side of East 40th Street to the south side of East 43rd Street and from the west side of North Pennsylvania Street to the west side of Central Avenue. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is grateful that Mrs. Danner and her family have agreed to open this wonderful home to the public for the 58th Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. The Centennial Estate turns 100 years old in 2019, so it is a perfect time to celebrate the home’s beautiful architecture and grounds, while at the same time raising funds for a worthy cause. The history of the property and its owners was researched by Guild member Sharon Butsch Freeland. 24 2019 DECORATORS’ SHOW HOUSE AND GARDENS
former owner bequeathed art to st. margaret’s hospital guild In 1936, Abram Block, the home’s previous owner, passed away. In his will, he bequeathed ten large oil paintings by wellknown Hoosier artists Clifton Wheeler and Otto Stark to St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. The paintings, which were depictions of Mother Goose rhymes, had formerly hung in Mr. Block’s store, L. Strauss & Co., at the corner of Washington and Illinois Streets. In a ceremony the following year, St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild donated the artwork to City Hospital, the name by which today’s Eskenazi Health was known at that time. The paintings were subsequently mounted on the walls of the hospital’s children’s ward. No one could have imagined in 1936 that the home once owned by Mr. Block would help St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild support the hospital’s work in 1980 and again in 2019.

Boulevard Garden AREA DESCRIPTION The classical boulevard wall pillars and their planters blend with the more modern styling of the new patio area in the Architect’s Sanctuary of the front side garden by filling in the voids in the view of the north property line with varying height and seasonal color of arborvitae, Cleveland Pear, Sunset Maple, and smaller flowering trees, while still showcasing the Siberian Spruce unique to this estate. The irreplaceable established ivy and beautiful lawn is accented with low level color of selected perennials that do not detract from the Tudor stylings.

Architect’s Sanctuary AREA DESCRIPTION The right-side patio design blends the lines and angles of this historic Tudor design with radii and arcs that balance the views from all angles as the linear home blends into the gentle curves of the spacious front lawn and ivy gardens. The design creates a hidden oasis that combines quiet views of the front lawn and its gardens with softening sounds of the elegant estate fountain. The fountain is central to the walkways that join the patio to the front entrance and the front lawn. The views from nearly every front window are classical and elegant.

Front Terrace AREA DESCRIPTION Sitting back off the street, the terrace allows a certain amount of privacy for entertaining or enjoying a glass of wine with a good book. The elegant furniture provides great comfort, as well as complementing the house in a softer way. An off-white finish was chosen to complement the soft blue Sunbrella fabric. This is accented by toss pillows to provide that final touch. To give balance to the terrace, three separate areas were selected: four chairs around a cocktail-height table; two motion lounge chairs with ottoman accompanied by an end table and two small lounge chairs; and finally, an end table with console table for serving.

The Nook AREA DESCRIPTION The design challenge for this space was to hide all the ceiling changes of bulk heads plus the openings—one window and four egresses— within a very small space. The room is to be used for intimate conversation, cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and overflow dining with large gatherings. As you step into the room, the dark gray walls and ceiling create a visual interest to the space and hide the many ceiling elevations, drawing your attention away from the egresses. Timeless Kitchen: A Lesson in History AREA DESCRIPTION Given the historic nature of this Tudor beauty, the design approach was one of respect for the existing architecture: to create a design that is timeless, understated, and appropriate. The design goal for this kitchen was for it to feel as if it has always been here. Therefore, cues for the cabinetry were taken from details of the historic home’s existing cabinetry, built-ins, paneling, and wainscoting. Grounding the space is a natural blue slate in a large hexagon format. A complementary historic soapstone was used for the counters. To provide a contemporary counterpoint, a matte brass Italian light fixture anchors the island. PAINT COLORS Benjamin Moore—Trim: Cape Hatteras Sand AC-34; Walls: Tapestry Beige 975

Guest’s Powder Room AREA DESCRIPTION The guest’s powder room could easily be overlooked as just a tiny utilitarian space. But designers Maryellen Hodapp and Christy Soldatis have brought this “important” space to its elegant potential by blending rich color, fine fabrics, classic trim, and marbleized wallpaper, making it the eye-catching gem of the first floor. By duplicating the original mirrored medicine cabinet above the new corner sink, adding champagne bronze fixtures, and sprucing up the original tile floor, they have added just the right sparkle to this dramatically transformed tiny space.

With its Tudor architecture, the house lends itself to charming English decor that fits perfectly within the cozy and somewhat irregularly shaped rooms. Vintage-inspired pieces combine with more modern elements to create an effortlessly curated look. This space reminds us of what thoughtful design can achieve: a sense of togetherness, a reminder to play.

The Toren, Reinventing Amsterdam AREA DESCRIPTION This space was inspired by designer Julie Boutilier’s trip to Amsterdam, where she stayed at the visionary hotelier Eric Toren’s Hotel TwentySeven. The room is true European-style, filled with luxury and jewel-toned colors which make the room feel like a regal escape. Sleek and shiny surfaces are intermixed with luxurious fabrics, soft furnishings, and window treatments. Shades of gold, green, deep plum, rose, and grey are used in exciting combinations throughout the room. The wallcovering is a breathtaking statement above the fireplace. Potted trees enliven the space and bring the beautiful landscape indoors.

Here Comes the Sun AREA DESCRIPTION “Here Comes the Sun” is not only the name of one of the most loved and renowned songs of the Beatles, but it is the inspiration for this joyful sitting room off the master bedroom as well. Sixties’ sensibilities meet modern tribal elements to create a room that is a happy start to the day, including all the amenities to enjoy morning coffee, news, or quiet meditation. The room was transformed by eliminating a door to the bath and access panel to the tub, cleaning it up to transform it with new finishes, lighting, and furnishings.

Madrecita’s Nursery AREA DESCRIPTION This office was transformed into a gender-neutral nursery suited not only for baby, but for mommy as well. The inspiration originated as an expression of gratitude to the designer’s single mother. Born in Arizona, she pays tribute by designing the room in a Southwestern, yet modern, style. Tranquil hues such as cream, gray, and green found in nature and various textures, are used. The design concept for this baby’s room is somewhat different; it was essential to provide a comfortable area and space for a parent to sleep, as well as baby. The most unique feature comes from the hand-crafted bassinet from Indonesia, provided by her Australian vendor.

Connecting Spaces AREA DESCRIPTION The charming, spacious linen area greets you with the original built-in storage cabinet. This functional, cozy room serves as the connecting space to the home’s original secondary bedrooms, as well as the long hallway that transitions to the servants’ quarters. The goal was to make the two combining hallways feel as though they had always been a part of each other. The carpet runner, continuing wall color, and new lighting blend the spaces together, drawing you down the hallway to elegant rooms and the delightful back staircase. Design choices were influenced by the natural beauty of the Tudor style home, while adding updates that would only enhance its 100-year-old character.

2018 Show House Awards 2018 MAGGIE’S AWARD The Maggie’s Award is traditionally given each year to a designer who contributes above and beyond the call of duty. The recipient exemplifies the heart of the Show House project by generously sharing his or her time, resources, and spirit with Guild members and other designers. However, in 2018, no Maggie’s Award was presented. There were so many deserving designers who went above and beyond that it was impossible to pick just one! We thank all of our design partners for their many contributions to St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and Eskenazi Health.
2018 PEOPLE’S CHOICE AWARD
Guests of the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens vote on this award. Each ticket stub serves as a voting form for the guest’s favorite interior and landscape areas. Guests make their selections at the end of their tour, and votes are tabulated at the close of the Show House. Winners are posted on showhouseindy.org.

St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is often asked, “how is a home selected to be a show house?”
The process of selecting a home to be transformed into the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens begins almost two years prior to the opening of the house for public tours. Ideas for potential Show Houses come from interested homeowners, real estate agents, surveys of desired neighborhoods, and other contacts in the community. To be selected, a home must be spacious enough to accommodate multiple design areas, have front and back staircases, a central entrance hall, a substantial garage or carriage house area, a sizeable lawn, outdoor area to accommodate landscapers’ designs and be of sufficient interest and character to attract the public. Decorators’ Show House and Gardens is most successful when it can exhibit examples of many designers’ creativity, both interior and exterior, while keeping the overall impression of the house that of a coordinated and integrated design scheme. The event is not a custom decorating service for homeowners. Designers are given freedom
of expression in their areas, although there are guidelines for reasonable adaptations to color schemes and themes that flow from room to room. Each year the Guild creates a Design Board made up of selected designers and Guild chair persons. This Board oversees area selection and design proposals from designers on the design of their areas. Being a Decorators’ Show House and Gardens homeowner is an exciting and rewarding experience. It is most gratifying to be part of the longest, continuously running Show House in the country and raise funds for an excellent cause—Eskenazi Health. If you are open to new design ideas and current design trends, if you are comfortable making decisions, and if you are flexible and can adapt to change, then please give consideration to becoming a future Decorators’ Show House homeowner. Please contact the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild at www.showhouseindy.org.
