Decorators’ Show House and Gardens Welcome to the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s 60th Annual Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. It is our pleasure to have you join us for a tour of this unique property in the Meridian Kessler neighborhood. We hope that you will enjoy this experience, as your visit continues the tradition of “The Country’s Longest-Running Show House Event.” The Guild members, designers, and landscapers spend months laying the groundwork for each show house. In January, we took possession of the property, and the work began. This year’s 26 design and landscape firms put their designs into action, transforming empty rooms into masterpieces and refreshing outside areas into lush gardens and open-air living spaces. While respecting the heritage and style of this historic residence, our designers look to designs and trends that will also accommodate a modern-day active family. As you tour the house and grounds, please follow along in this program. The areas are listed, numbered, and described in the order in which you will see them. There is helpful information on each page, including designer information, paint color names, and names of contractors used by the designer. We hope that you will find an area or two that inspires you to go home and give one of your own rooms a new look. Of course, you can always make an appointment with one of our designers! The Guild volunteers, our dedicated designers, and our landscape professionals make this tradition possible. Willingly jumping into this effort are many loyal businesses, vendors, and contractors, as well as many others who offer special services. We encourage you to look at their advertisements and logos and hope you will visit their places of business. Without their support, the Guild would not be able to carry out a project of this scope to benefit Eskenazi Health. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild’s mission is to raise funds for the programs and services of Eskenazi Health. As a Level I Trauma Center, everyone in the community benefits from its organizational skills in the event of any public disaster. The men and women of Eskenazi offer superior heathcare for all, regardless of ability to pay. We are proud to support Eskenazi Health and its contribution to the entire community. As you explore the beautifully decorated rooms, remember that many of the items are available for purchase. Contact individual designers and landscapers for more information. After your tour of the house and grounds, we invite you to visit our Maggie’s Hoosier Marketplace featuring products from Indiana small businesses. Thank you for supporting the 60th Anniversary Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. We hope you enjoy the tour and look forward to making it your yearly tradition.

Eskenazi Health Foundation appreciates its long-term partnership with St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild. The 2021 St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Decorators’ Show House and Gardens once again demonstrates its commitment to Eskenazi Health and to the entire community.

February 26, 2021

To the Women of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild,

On behalf of Eskenazi Health and Eskenazi Health Foundation, it is our pleasure to congratulate you on this year’s Decorators’ Show House and Gardens – one of the best examples ever of the “will” of the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild finding the “why.” St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has been a generous supporter of Eskenazi Health since the Guild’s inception in 1907. In over a century of cooperation, the Guild has donated more than $13 million in support of Eskenazi Health’s mission to serve the members of the Indianapolis community. It is through such generous community contributions that we are able to continue as leaders in our community maximizing the health and well-being of all of our neighbors. After a truly unprecedented year, the Guild’s support remains as important as ever. Funds raised by St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild in 2020 supported the Eskenazi Health COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund. This fund allowed Eskenazi Health to serve the people of Marion County in the midst of the global crisis. This year’s Show House and Gardens will support the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Center for Nursing Excellence. The Guild has previously made generous contributions to the Sandra Eskenazi Center for Brain Care Innovation, the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild Diagnostic Breast Center, the Haven of Hope rooms for patients’ families, the EMBRACE program, Limestone Falls in The Matthew R. Gutwein Commonground and the beautiful historic art collection proudly displayed throughout the campus, to name a few. It is through these programs that the presence of the Guild is felt by so many Eskenazi Health patients and families. The leadership and philanthropic support of the women of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has left an undeniable mark on the care provided by Eskenazi Health. Congratulations on your remarkable transformation of the 60th historic Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. Eskenazi Health and Eskenazi Health Foundation look forward to our continued partnership with St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and how that partnership will enable us to continue to provide high-quality, patient-centered health care to people in need throughout Indianapolis. With gratitude,

Lisa Harris, M.D. Chief Executive Officer Eskenazi Health

| Eskenazi Health Patient Testimonial | Patient Appreciates Quality Care She’s Received Since 1953 LaVada Clark is a remarkably youthful, enthusiastic and strong-willed woman who has a quick wit, a positive outlook on life, a hearty laugh and a wonderful sense of humor. Her first visit to Eskenazi Health (then named Indianapolis General Hospital) occurred at age 16, when she accepted a job working in the student dining room serving nurses and doctors, along with patients on the various wards. Her first child was born in 1955 at Indianapolis General Hospital, as were four of her total of five children. For many years she remained – along with her children – patients of General Hospital, which became Wishard Memorial Hospital in 1975. Clark moved away from the area in 2013 and then moved back near Eskenazi Health in 2019. When she was admitted to the Sidney & Lois Eskenazi Hospital on July 6, 2020, with pain in her upper stomach, it didn’t take long for Eskenazi Health physicians to discover she had pancreatitis, which is an inflammation in the pancreas. The pancreas is a long, flat gland that sits tucked behind the stomach in the upper abdomen. After going through a CT scan and an MRI, Clark had gall bladder removal surgery on July 10. The surgery was a complete success, and Clark is very happy to express how well she was treated and cared for at Eskenazi Health. “Can I go on national TV primetime and talk about how great an experience this was?” she said. “Everyone at Eskenazi Health was fantastic, and I feel that the excellent care that was given to me during my hospital stay played a very important role in my recovery.” Clark is grateful to her medical team that included internal medicine specialist Khurram Siddiqui, M.D., and many others on the Eskenazi Health staff who contributed in a variety of ways that resulted in her successful procedure and recovery. “Everything was wonderful, and I know I was very sick,” Clark said. “I said it to my family and my friends, ‘Who goes into the hospital and comes out talking about how they had a good time?’ That would be nobody but me, because I did. It was really nice.” Now that Clark has returned to residing in close proximity to Eskenazi Health and is regularly seeing Senior Care physician Jennifer Carnahan, M.D. (who she adores), she’ll never wander away again. “I came back, and I’m glad I did,” Clark said. “People talk about good service, but how often do we get it? I always get great care at Eskenazi Health, and I know they’ll keep up the good work for me and all their patients.”

| Eskenazi Health Patient Testimonial | Longtime Employee Prevails Against COVID-19 What became a precarious and terrifying journey began on March 15, 2020, with an offand-on fever, along with some minor gastrointestinal discomfort. Natalie Fitzgerald, BSN, RN, had no idea then that she would soon be in grave danger and an intense two-week fight for her life versus COVID-19 was on the horizon. Fitzgerald, who has been with Eskenazi Health since 1996 and is the clinical educator for the Richard M. Fairbanks Burn Center at Eskenazi Health, began developing a low-grade fever but wasn’t “feeling too bad” until about 10 p.m. on Sunday, March 22. “I started feeling short of breath and wasn’t really sure what was going on, but I thought I was OK and that I’d stay at home thinking it wasn’t too bad, but then early in the morning on the 23rd around 3:30 a.m., I believed I was in worse shape and decided I needed to go to the hospital. That’s when I called for an ambulance to take me to Eskenazi Health.” Upon arrival, Fitzgerald was rushed into one of Eskenazi Health’s shock rooms, where acutely ill patients are brought to be stabilized prior to transfer to an intensive care unit or other department. “The ICU doctor, Dr. Joe Smith, came down and talked to me saying that they thought I probably had COVID-19 and that their plan, because of the oxygen requirements that I had and what they had seen in other patients, was to probably intubate me when I got upstairs to the ICU. They also wanted to give me a little time to see if I could be stable on the oxygen they had me on,” Fitzgerald said. Not showing signs of improvement, Fitzgerald, the mother of two sons and a daughter, was placed on a ventilator and heavily sedated for nearly two weeks. On April 6, the breathing tube was finally removed, though she has virtually no recollection of that or anything else that happened the following day. “I have some really foggy memories of the first two days when I came out (of being deeply sedated),” she said. “Then on April 8, I was pretty awake and was able to work with physical therapy and a speech therapist for the first time. That was also, I believe, the first time I was able to talk with people. The physical therapist helped me find my phone so I could make calls, and I called my mom and dad, and then I spoke with my youngest son and my daughter.” Fitzgerald remained at Eskenazi Health using a walker and undergoing occupational and speech therapy every day until departing on April 14. She arrived home without using a walking apparatus. Fitzgerald has continued the physical therapy and enjoys taking walks with her son MJ, who encourages her to be steadfast with her therapy. She is also attending classes towards earning a master’s degree in nursing education. Fitzgerald considers her recovery from COVID-19 miraculous and is eternally grateful for the quality care she received at Eskenazi Health. “The ICU team and the physicians are phenomenal. In the past, I had seen Dr. (Graham) Carlos and Dr. Smith in action and heard them talk, and I knew how good they were and what great teachers they are. I know they are among the very best. And the nurses, physical therapists and occupational therapists are doing such good work, and I know that people are stepping out of their normal roles and stretching themselves so patients get what they need. That’s always what Eskenazi Health does. I would tell people that Eskenazi Health is always the best place to go all the time, and not just for COVID-19.”

April 23, 2021 Greetings! On behalf of the City of Indianapolis, I want to extend my sincere congratulations to St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild as you celebrate the 60th-anniversary fundraiser of the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. This annual event supports additional programming at Eskenazi Health and has contributed to vital medical services for Indianapolis residents. This year, the selected show home is located at 5417 N. Meridian St. and aptly named the Columns on Meridian. The Decorators¶ Show House and Gardens, which restores classical homes to raise funds for a variety of capital improvements and programs for Eskenazi Health, has been a staple event for residents during Indianapolis springtime. Founded in 1907, the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, a mostly women-led organization, has donated over $13 million to benefit patients served at Eskenazi Health. The funds from this year’s show home will support the Center for Nursing Excellence at Eskenazi Health. Again, congratulations to the St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild on celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. I thank you for your valuable contributions to our community and commend you in your efforts to support Eskenazi Health. Sincerely,

Joseph H. Hogsett Mayor City of Indianapolis

Achievement in Medicine Award Generously sponsored by Versiti Blood Center since 2006

The AIM Award,

given annually by St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild and sponsored by the Indiana Blood Center, honors management-level members of the Eskenazi Health team who uphold the tradition of excellence in healthcare. These innovative, creative, and dedicated recipients were selected among many exceptional nominees from Eskenazi Health.

amy beth kressel, m.d., m.s., fidsa, fshea Amy Beth Kressel, M.D., M.S., FIDSA, FSHEA, is the medical director of infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship at Eskenazi Health. She and her team rose to meet the emergency needs posed by the COVID-19 pandemic starting in February 2020 and continue to lead the charge in the fight against the virus. Dr. Kressel played an instrumental role early on in daily decisions regarding isolation procedures, use of personal protective equipment (particularly early on when masks and gowns were in short supply), COVID-19 testing and procedures on how to allow surgery to be performed on patients suspected to be positive for COVID-19. Recently, Dr. Kressel has been actively involved in decisions about the use of monoclonal antibodies for COVID-19 and

vaccination. Dr. Kressel and her team’s work proved to be especially important to the care of the vulnerable populations, as they are among those who are at high-risk of being infected with COVID-19 or suffering severe effects. Their work was also critical in keeping the Eskenazi Health frontline staff and employees safe so that care was able to continue being provided to all patients during the course of the pandemic. In her role as medical director of the infection prevention and antimicrobial stewardship, Dr. Kressel directs and strategically plans a program to prevent hospital-acquired infections. In addition to her work at Eskenazi Health, Dr. Kressel serves as a professor of clinical medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. She currently serves as chair of the Indiana COVID-19 Vaccine Review Advisory Group. She is board certified in infectious disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

joseph smith, m.d.

Joseph Smith, M.D., serves as the medical director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) and medical director of Respiratory Care at Eskenazi Health. He has been instrumental in leading patient care during the COVID-19 pandemic. Throughout the past year, Dr. Smith has assisted with the development of state guidelines, established new protocols and procedures, supported MICU staff and expanded Eskenazi Health’s MICU capacity – all while providing exemplary care to Eskenazi Health patients. As a result of his leadership and collaboration, Eskenazi Health has discharged more than 1,500 patients who tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr. Smith has been a true leader and collaborator throughout the pandemic. He developed and maintained the Eskenazi Health MICU COVID-19 Guide to ensure MICU providers, nurse managers, pharmacists and respiratory therapists were continuously updated. He has worked closely with the Palliative Care team to ensure they were equipped to best serve their mutual patients. Dr. Smith has also assisted with development of an implementation plan to apply the Indiana Department of Health Crisis Standards for Ventilator Allocation to the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Smith serves as an assistant professor of clinical medicine at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, critical care medicine and pulmonary medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine. 2021 DECORATORS’ SHOW HOUSE AND GARDENS 9

St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild are you interested in joining st. margaret’s hospital guild? St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is a volunteer organization comprised of dedicated women who are committed to raising funds for programs and services of Eskenazi Health. For the past 60 years, this has been accomplished by hosting the annual Decorators’ Show House and Gardens. The proceeds support some of the neediest of our neighbors. A group of dynamic women have fun serving on various Guild committees and participating in Decorators’ Show House and Gardens assignments. Members who work together develop lifelong friendships while raising funds for Eskenazi Health. For more information about membership, please email: decoratorshowhouseinfo@gmail. com or visit www.showhouseindy. org. We would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have and share the St. Margaret’s story. mission statement St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, Inc. is a volunteer organization committed to raising funds for the services and programs of Eskenazi Health.

was founded in 1907 by five women who formed a nonsectarian guild to provide care and support to Indianapolis’ City Hospital patients through direct service and fundraising projects. The Guild’s mission is the same today; only the name of the hospital has changed. Starting as City Hospital in 1855, the hospital has been known as Indianapolis General Hospital, Marion County General Hospital, Wishard Memorial Hospital, and today we all know it as Eskenazi Health. People often ask how the name of the Guild was chosen. St. Margaret, the daughter of ninth-century Prince Edward of Scotland, worked with the sick, orphans, and the poor. The Guild’s name reflects the same spirit of her work. Every year since 1962, St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has organized the refurbishing of a classic home, opened the home for a two-week public tour, and donated the proceeds to Eskenazi Health. Since the Guild’s founding in 1907, it has raised over $13.5 million for Eskenazi Health, supporting the patients and professionals at our city’s public hospital. Proceeds from the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens allow SMHG to provide equipment and vital programming for patients at Eskenazi Health. With your help, the Guild has funded the Burn Unit, departmental renovations, sponsored two mobile mammography clinics, initiated the Mother’s Milk Bank, and provided “Protecting Our Children” materials. SMHG has provided summer group therapy at Midtown Children’s Center, underwritten childbirth classes focusing on areas of highest infant mortality, and supported the Haven of Hope. The Guild has helped build raised garden beds for patients’ use at the Sky Garden, supported Healthy Me for children, funded the Limestone Falls at the Commonground, and purchased vans for Eskenazi Midtown Mental Health. Funds earned also provided support for the Sandra Eskenazi Center for Brain Care Innovation. In 2020, the Guild supported the Eskenazi Health COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund. This fund allowed Eskenazi Health to serve the people of Marion County in the midst of the global pandemic. Most recently, the Guild has pledged to support the Center for Nursing Excellence at Eskenazi Health, an innovative program focusing on recruiting and training quality nurses. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is proud to be one of the pioneer volunteer groups in the City of Indianapolis. We are grateful to the designers, landscape architects, sponsors, individuals, corporations, and donors of in-kind services who make this annual event possible. 2021 DECORATORS’ SHOW HOUSE AND GARDENS 13

Brought to St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild by Dessie herself, the Indianapolis Decorators’ Show House and Gardens is currently celebrating its 60th year and is the country’s longest running show house event. After moving to Indianapolis in 1961, Dessie delivered an idea to St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild that she first visualized and implemented for an organization in Hillsborough, California, of which she was a board member. That idea was the Decorators’ Show House. The first show house began the very next year, in 1962, at 5019 N. Meridian Street. The annual springtime event benefiting Eskenazi Health, has since become the Guild’s largest annual fundraiser. St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild has raised nearly $13.5 million in its 114 years. “It has been a real treat to see the success of the Indianapolis Decorators’ Show House and all the things that have come about from the program,” Dessie said. “The Guild is full of wonderful people that do a great job of carrying things on.” Though now a Life Member, she is still actively involved in the Guild. According to Dessie, “That is one of the wonderful things about the Guild – you can be as active as you want to be.” Now 91, Dessie is still living life to the fullest. She has eight grandkids and is hoping for some great-grandchildren. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, she and a group of very cautious friends still gather at one another’s house to play Bridge. Before the pandemic she took a trip to the Holy Land with her church, Meridian Street United Methodist Church; she needed some help navigating the rocky terrain, but managed most of it by herself. She still takes long walks often and works out at her home gym three days a week. “Staying active has kept me healthy,” she says. “I still feel like I did when I was 60. The only thing I’ve given up is golf.” St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is indebted to Dessie and thankful for her 60 years of loyalty and involvement in the Guild and the Indianapolis community.

The Columns on Meridian

The residence at 5417 North Meridian Street is located on Indianapolis’ main north-south thoroughfare. Homes along this two-mile, boulevard-like section of Meridian Street are supported by several local organizations that seek to maintain the area’s history, appearance, and quality of life. The North Meridian Street Historic District is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The home was designed and constructed by the SchoenMorgan Company, which was owned and operated by Mrs. Effie Schoen-Morgan (1873-1960). Hers was an unusual position for a woman in the early decades of the 1900s. The residence was built on a typical Meridian Street lot of 100 feet by 300 feet. Perched on a hill, it originally had a view of White River. The exterior of the two-story Colonial is red-brick veneer with limestone trim. An open porch with eight immense columns extends across the front of the structure. A long driveway winds its way up the hill from Meridian Street to a 3-car garage in the rear. The six-bedroom, five-and-a-half bath home contains 5,536 square feet on the main and upper levels and 2,110 square feet in the basement. Construction of the home began late in 1929 and was completed in 1930. The first owners of 5417 North Meridian Street were Willis Meredith Nicholson Sr. (18661947) and his wife Eugenie (Kountze) Nicholson (1867-1931). Meredith Nicholson was a poet, author, journalist, and diplomat. His best-known novel was The House of A Thousand Candles. Mrs. Nicholson passed away in 1931, and the widowed Meredith married Dorothy Wolfe Nicholson (1895-1951) in 1933. Later that same year, Nicholson sold the property, when he was appointed United States Minister to Paraguay. The property’s second owners were Warren Charles Fairbanks (1878-1938) and Helen Ethel (Cassidy) Fairbanks (1883-1944). Fairbanks was the eldest son of United States Vice President Charles Warren Fairbanks. Warren was President of The Indianapolis News from 1922 until his unexpected death in 1938. The third family to occupy 5417 N. Meridian Street were David Lurvey (1886-1959) and Frances (Traugott) Lurvey (1889-1942) and four of their children – Leonard, Rosalie, William, and Frances. They moved into the home in 1939. David Lurvey was president of the Hatfield Electric Company. Fanny Lurvey was active in civic and philanthropic organizations. Mrs. Lurvey died in 1942. Two years later, David Lurvey married the widowed Ruth (Hammerman) Levey (1900-1962). The Lurveys hosted many activities in their home. The fourth owners of the home were Clarence B. La Dine (1904-1979) and Veneta (Leonard) La Dine (1907-2002). During World War II, Dr. La Dine served in several Army hospitals in Iceland, England, and France. Dr. La Dine was on the staffs of Methodist and Community Hospitals. Like the Lurveys, the LaDines opened their home to many social, civic, and philanthropic events. Richard R. Hamilton (1941-1997) and Carolyn (Hohl) Hamilton lived only three blocks away when the La Dine residence became available. They and their young daughters, Wendy and Jennifer, lived in the property from 1980 to 1982. During their ownership, Richard installed

St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is often asked, “how is a home selected to be a show house?” a hot tub and built a playhouse for the girls. From 1982 to 1984, the owners of the home were Gerald R. Levin and Rhonda (Solotkin) Levin. Dr. Levin is a dentist with a practice on the northeast side of Indianapolis. The seventh owners of 5417 N. Meridian Street were Robert L. Zerbe and Linda (Rhode) Zerbe. Their children are Anne, Eric, and Sarah. When the Zerbes owned the home, he was executive director of Lilly Research Laboratories. The home’s eighth owners were Kevin M. Kelley and Karen (Sandy) Kelley. They owned the home from 1996 until 2008. The Kelleys installed the swimming pool and built the addition on the three-car garage. The ninth owners were Kenneth W. Rush and Shannon (Alston) Rush. They occupied the property from 2008 to 2012. Ms. Rush has held several positions over her 24-year career at Eli Lilly and Company. In 2012, Mark A. Graham and Susan (White) Graham became the tenth owners of the 90-yearold home. They are the parents of four children: Caroline, Peter, Katherine, and David. Mark is an Indianapolis native and the grandson of Thornton F. Graham, the founder of Graham Electronics. Mark’s mother, JoAnn Graham, was a longtime member of St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild, serving as President one year and Show House Chair another year. Mark serves on the Board of Directors of Goodwill of Central and Southern Indiana. Susan hails from Louisville, Kentucky, and serves on the Board of the Meridian Street Foundation. The Grahams have hosted numerous parties, fundraising events, and a family wedding. It is thanks to their generosity that St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild is privileged to feature this wonderful property as the 2021 Decorators’ Show House and Gardens.

The history of the 2021 Decorators Show House and Gardens was researched by St. Margaret’s Hospital Guild member, Sharon Butsch Freeland

The process of selecting a home to be transformed into the Decorators’ Show House and Gardens begins almost two years prior to the opening of the house for public tours. Ideas for potential Show Houses come from interested homeowners, real estate agents, surveys of desired neighborhoods, and other contacts in the community. To be selected, a home must be spacious enough to accommodate multiple design areas, have front and back staircases, a central entrance hall, a substantial garage or carriage house area, a sizeable lawn, outdoor areas to accommodate landscapers’ designs and be of sufficient interest and character to attract the public. Decorators’ Show House and Gardens is most successful when it can exhibit examples of many designers’ creativity, both interior and exterior, while keeping the overall impression of the house that of a coordinated and integrated design scheme. The event is not a custom decorating service for homeowners. Designers are given freedom of expression in their areas, although there are guidelines for reasonable adaptations to color schemes and themes that flow from room to room. Each year the Guild creates a Design Board made up of selected designers and Guild members. This Board oversees area selection and design proposals from designers on the look of their areas. Being a Decorators’ Show House and Gardens homeowner is an exciting and rewarding experience. It is most gratifying to be part of the longest, continuously running show house in the country and raise funds for an excellent cause—Eskenazi Health. If you are open to new design ideas and current design trends, if you are comfortable making decisions, and if you are flexible and can adapt to change, then please give consideration to becoming a future Decorators’ Show House homeowner. 2021 DECORATORS’ SHOW HOUSE AND GARDENS 27

The Colonnade Garden AREA DESCRIPTION The Colonnade Garden marks the entry to this stately home where eight strong Corinthian columns and two lions stand proud. The existing layers of boxwood and yew hedges have been retained and delicately manicured. Lining the brick walkway and extending into the larger bed is a delicate border of liriope. Punctuating the path are groupings of azaleas for added texture and color. Another grouping of azaleas is placed beneath the existing Magnolia tree. A natural stone retaining wall contains the planting area and extends out into the front lawn.

LIVING room AREA DESCRIPTION The LIVING room welcomes and embraces the sense of anticipation and surprise, not only for the guests, but more importantly, for the family to live and enjoy a life that is comfortable. In the 21st Century, living rooms have become more comfortable; and in this Show House, the numerous doorways allow fluent connections to the solarium, the sunroom, and the patio overlooking Meridian Street. Intimate conversations, reading books, doing puzzles, playing games, listening to music that fills the surrounding rooms, or just gazing out the French doors, all contribute to a space that can be applied to a life we live today.

AREA 3

Solarium AREA DESCRIPTION The Solarium was transformed from a home office into a space for the homeowners to retreat and relax in. The design inspiration came from the White House’s original solarium. The “Sky Parlor” was built in the 1920s to give the first families a space to escape their hectic lives. With the addition of soft seating, along with a small round table and chairs, this room now serves as a small gathering space for the family and their close friends. The floor to ceiling windows and neutral wall color allows the homeowner to appreciate the natural sunlight and beautiful exterior views.

The Tropical Lounge AREA DESCRIPTION The abundance of light from the many windows in this space inspired the decision to bring the outside in with plants, green wall paint, and a lively tropical wallpaper. The comfortable gathering space is anchored by a large butterfly sectional in a warm neutral fabric. A game table on one side and a bar cabinet on the other complete the function of the room. A combination of other natural elements such as rattan, jute, terra cotta, and solid wood are modernized by the accents of black throughout the room. This mix of materials allows this tropical lounge to exist in an urban setting.

AREA 9

A Jewel AREA DESCRIPTION This room is called “A Jewel” because of where it is placed in the home. You have to look for it, but when you find it, I am hoping you will discover a delightful room that captures the spirit of this beautiful home. The English wallpaper was the inspiration for this room and set the stage. The arched mirror blends with the new chandelier, and the finishes blend beautifully with the Brizo accessories. The cabinet above the toilet is both functional and beautiful, and the gorgeous, embroidered Mitchell fabric adds a dramatic touch. It is truly a jewel of a space!

AREA 10

Owners’ Suite AREA DESCRIPTION The Owners’ Suite takes a Contemporary twist on Traditional. The starring role is a traditional chinoiserie wallpaper and is the inspiration for the room. All supporting roles are taken from cues in the wallpaper, such as the use of yellow on the custom upholstered bed and a vintage sofa. Restful shades of smokey lavender soothe a bold scheme, while splashes of white ground the room. An unpredictable mixture of both new and vintage finds gives the room soul, while art and objects add interest and sophistication. To give the room order, balance, and architectural interest, panel molding was installed to compliment the existing crown and picture molding. Painting all moldings white unifies the trim.

AREA 11

Owners’ Bath AREA DESCRIPTION The bath was thoughtfully designed to be an elegant, peaceful retreat. Personalized vanities allow ample space for daily routines. The lady’s area has customized pull-outs, while the gentleman’s area has smartly appointed storage allowing for uncluttered counter space. The beautiful linen armoire offsets the asymmetry, balancing it to the window and the soaking tub. The new marble floor allows for modern design of a curbless shower. The luxurious shower fixtures and stunning mosaic tile create a dynamic focal point.

The Lattice Bath AREA DESCRIPTION One of the challenges of transforming this relatively modern era bathroom into the serene en suite you see today was the existence of a door that led directly to the front hallway. By removing the extra door, we were able to enlarge the shower as well as relocate the vanity. The exquisite lattice-pattern decorative wall tile, modern subway tile and stained wood accents add a touch of sophistication, while providing a relatively neutral background for personalizing the space to suit the vibrant personality of the homeowners.

Jack & Jill Bath AREA DESCRIPTION Astral is defined as “coming from the stars.” It is a word that describes something beautiful, as well as something visionary. Both definitions are appropriate for Astral Night, the mosaic in the shower. Calacatta marble is the field tile in the shower, and honed sable marble is on the floor. The bespoke vanity is painted to coordinate with the mosaic in the shower. A Calacatta counter, brass hardware and the Levoir faucet compliment the vanity. Accessories are the jewelry of any beautiful room. Bath fixtures and monogrammed towels all add elegance to this refined space.

Be Our Guest AREA DESCRIPTION Gorgeous fabrics in a striking palette envelop guests in gracious comfort and exquisite taste! The lavish floral backdrop sets the tone, with the added detail of its curtain rod wrapped in a fine-gauge pinstripe in crisp counterpoint to the animated pattern of the drape. The sumptuous bed beckons, swathed in buttercream. Arcing across the bed and tables, the oversized upholstered camelback headboard evokes generous hospitality, while the matching footboard thoughtfully doubles as a settee. First Floor Guest Bathroom AREA DESCRIPTION Inspired by the home’s classic style, I chose timeless elements with art deco hints. The original layout was limited by a door leading into the adjacent bedroom. Closing off the door allowed the sink to be relocated from the left side of the room and tucked into the corner. By removing the bathtub and adding a shower, the bathroom becomes more usable for guests. The navy walls and ceiling contrasted with the light tiles infuses a bit of drama into the space.

AREA 21

The Office Retreat AREA DESCRIPTION The Office Retreat is more than just a place to conduct business. It is a space that allows a homeowner to celebrate his love of the American and Canadian “West.” A hide-covered steer horn table from Texas plays off the rustic custom furnishings from Old Hickory. Fly casting gear brings memories of that fishing trip on the Campbell River in British Columbia. Historic documents including one signed by Theodore Roosevelt, a US Cavalry officer’s uniform from the 1880’s, an extraordinary Northern Plains Native American shield (c. 1890), and Navajo textiles further capture the spirit and mystique of the West.

Mudroom & Hallway AREA DESCRIPTION Nature with a touch of vintage charm echoing the era of the home when it was originally built is the inspiration for the Mudroom and adjacent Hallway. The magnolia wallpaper provided the color palette and vision for the spaces, bringing in black and white from the floors and pulling a soft green that was the catalyst for the cabinetry color. A new custom cabinet that houses the family pets’ bowls was made for convenience. The wood on the mirror frame, jute rug, and beaded lighting all echo nature, while the window treatment and bench bring in modern touches. The mix of modern art throughout the hallway is juxtaposed with traditional architecture, tying together vintage character with updated style.

LANDSCAPE C

Fireside Retreat AREA DESCRIPTION The goal of designing this area was to highlight several areas within the space, while keeping with the home’s historic architecture. Transitioning from the front yard to the south side of the house we created a “secret garden.” A quaint, quiet place to enjoy the sounds of the existing fountain with flanking Magnolias and an espalier background softening the courtyard wall. The main bluestone patio in this garden will be home to a new historic brick and limestone fireplace, adding both aesthetic appeal and functional value for those cool Indiana nights. Carrying on through the pool terrace, thoughtful pops of perennial and annual color fill in between the existing landscape, creating all year long appeal.
