hen you think about all the details— both big and small— that make up your wedding day, their sheer number can start to be overwhelming. Getting ready for the happy occasion may be stressful. You have a lot to think about, plan, and choose, all while avoiding turning into the dreaded Bridezilla.
Though when you complete tasks will vary based on your individual needs and situation, this timeline can give you an idea of what to cross off your list and when.
At least 12 Months Out Announce your engagement to parents, family members, and close friends.
Hire a wedding planner if you choose to use one. Plan the budget for the wedding and honeymoon. Set the date and time of the wedding. Choose your colors and theme for easier coordination of items later in the process. Start looking at venues for the ceremony and reception. “As soon as you

In Focus ashley Siner encourages brides and
grooms to share the wedding’s style with their photographer and stay in communication regarding any scheduling changes.
At least 9 Months Out Decide on the wedding party and ask each person to be a part of your day. Register for gifts. Before doing so, take stock of what you really need. Choose items that make sense for your lifestyle, not just those that are shiny and pretty. Book the venue(s) for the wedding and reception. “If the property is privately owned, give yourself time to make the necessary arrangements,” says April Stegeman, event planner and sales manager for Jonathan Byrd’s. “Public places or properties will allow for a closer time to the wedding.” Start planning your guest list for savethe-dates and invitations. Go cake and food tasting, and select your baker and caterer, if needed. (Some venues don’t permit outside vendors.) When deciding on a caterer, “look at their offerings as far as if they are gourmet or homestyle, and if they specialize in plated food or buffet style,” Stegeman says. Think of a color scheme.
Say Yes to the Dress Of course the front of your gown is
important, but the back is coming into the spotlight more and more. “A lot of detail is bigger than ever because the back of the dress is the most feminine and elaborate,” Young Colling says. As for color, you’ll see different shades of traditional white and ivory and even soft tones of blue and pink. While choosing your gown, keep in mind the overall picture. “To me, the wedding is like a stage, and you’re choosing your costume,” Colling says. Your gown should create a cohesive look with your flowers, the venue, and your bridesmaids’ dresses. Begin looking around for a bridal shop, as well as a designer. “What kind of gown leads to what kind of bridesmaids’ dresses, what kind of flowers, what kind of tablecloths, and such,” says Young Colling, owner of Marie Gabriel Couture Bridal. “Choose a

find your perfect location and know the date you would like to choose, certainly book the venue well in advance,” says Jennifer Beth, corporate event planner at The Mansion at Oak Hill. Research and book a photographer, especially if photos are of great importance to you and your groom. “If you are wanting to have your first choice in photographers, and it’s a priority in your budget, I always say make sure and contact us at least a year out to ensure your date is not taken,” says Ashley Siner of The Siners Photography.

shop that will give you the best experience.”

At least 6 to 8 Months Out Start planning your engagement party. Think about potential dates and sending out invitations. Also start the process for engagement photos. “We suggest getting them taken about 6 to 7 months before the wedding to ensure enough time to get them back to use for design purposes,” Siner says. Select and order your wedding gown and bridesmaids’ dresses. Depending on how many are in your bridal party, it can take time to collect everyone’s information, Colling says. As for bridal lingerie, many brides opt for a corset or strapless bra with shaper for a smooth appearance, says Barbara Gilbert, owner of Barbara’s New Beginnings. The lingerie boutique offers corsets in sizes AA to H and strapless bras up to an I cup. Lacy thongs and crystal-studded panties are also available. Buy wedding bands and get them engraved, if desired. “Most engraving can be done within a week, but, with everything else going on, once you confirm the rings fit, then why not check it off your to-do list right away?” says Jen Simpson, marketing coordinator for Reis-Nichols.

Rock Bands Though platinum and gold will never go out of style, grooms are increasingly choosing bands in cobalt, tungsten, and titanium.
“We’re seeing a lot of edgier styles for guys, like black titanium or wood inlays,” Jen Simpson says. For women, what’s popular in wedding bands—halos, bead-set, and pave styles— mostly mirrors what’s hot in engagement rings. In addition to minding your budget, keep in mind your lifestyle and personal tastes when choosing a band. And make sure it complements your engagement ring. If you’re using them, book the DJ or band for the reception. Start to think SUMMER 2013 | INDIANA BRIDE 19

of songs you’d like for the first dance and during the reception. Meet with florists to ensure your flower selections for the bouquet and centerpieces will be available.
Flower Power When you’re looking for a florist, Pam
Parker, owner of JP Parker Flowers, suggests talking to brides who have previously worked with the company you have in mind. Be sure you can easily reach the florist to ask questions or relate any changes. Parker says brides are incorporating more natural and vintage touches. Think vintage jewelry added to the bouquet, or moss and birds as part of the overall decor.
Send save-the-dates. “Having a really good handle on the list of attendees is important,” says Gloria Boyden, owner of Events by Design. Begin to collect small mementos or keepsakes for the groom’s gift or to put in your wedding album. Choose and order your invitations.
At least 4 to 6 Months Out Send your dress and the bridesmaids’ dresses for first-round alterations. “Each designer is different and will need time to gather the measurements, correct fabric, and other items for each lady,” says Cassandra Stevning, coowner of The Wedding Studio. Finalize the menu with your caterer. Look into wedding insurance and decide if it’s a good fit for you. Book your honeymoon. Alex Kutin, owner of Indy Travel Leaders, suggests Hawaii, Mexico, Jamaica, St. Lucia, and Costa Rica as picturesque destinations. Just be mindful of the time of year you plan on visiting—costs can vary by season. Also ensure that your passport, if needed, is up to date. Make your final decisions on floral arrangements. “Quite often we find 20 INDIANA BRIDE | SUMMER 2013

that brides change their minds, so it gives them an opportunity if they’ve seen something else to choose another idea or concept,” Parker says. Buy wedding favors for your guests.
a location
for every occasion
At least 2 to 5 Months Out Mail out invitations. Make hotel or other overnight arrangements for out-of-town guests. Order the groom’s and groomsmen’s formalwear. Kim Hamather, manager of DC Designers Tux Shop, says bowties worn with flat-front shirts and a modern fit are in. “If a groom is still wanting a different look, he can choose light-gray or dark-gray tuxedos or a tan destination suit,” she says. Arrange transportation for the wedding, whether it be a limousine, carriage, trolley, horseback—whatever mode you choose. Meet with the minister or officiant for the wedding and go over the ceremony. Begin thinking of hairstyles and makeup so that you can experiment with different looks. Select and book a stylist and/or makeup artist. Attend any bridal showers. Get bridesmaids’ dresses altered again if needed. Order bridesmaids’ and groomsmen’s gifts. “Getting customized gifts ahead of time is important because specific websites or stores need time to prepare and ship items,” Stevning says. Gilbert likes one-size-fits-all Hanky Panky thongs or a bold statement necklace tailored to each girl’s taste as fun reminders of the day. One bride bought comfy and colorful Oka b. sandals for her wedding party, she says. Schedule the wedding rehearsal and rehearsal dinner. Write your vows.
1 to 2 Months Out Obtain your marriage license. In Indiana, it’s good for 60 days from the date it’s issued. Visit courts.in.gov to start the application process. Meet with the DJ or band to finalize music for the wedding. Be sure to have a list of songs you’d like to hear and those you don’t want.

Have your final dress fitting. “Bring a bridesmaid with you who will be able to help with lifting the train and with any small buttons,” Colling suggests. Write and print the wedding programs or have them ready to be picked up. Notify the post office of a change in address, if applicable. Write thank-you cards as you receive gifts. Contact your photographer, florist, caterer, transportation company, musicians, baker, officiant, and hotel to confirm that each entity knows locations and arrival and delivery times.
2 to 3 Weeks Out Have a final guest count, prepare the seating chart, and write out place cards. Keep family relationships (good and not-so-good) in mind, and be sure to leave a couple of seats open for unannounced plus-ones. Pick up your dress. Painful blisters aren’t on the guest list, so break in your wedding shoes. “Put on thick socks and wear them around the house on carpeted floors,” Stevning says. Attend bachelorette/bachelor party. Shop and pack for your honeymoon.
Day Before Have your rehearsal dinner and wedding run-through. Assign day-of responsibilities to the wedding party. Indulge in a manicure/pedicure or any other relaxing pre–wedding day activities. Confirm your honeymoon plans, including flight times. Gather together your gown, shoes, and other accessories, as well as an emergency kit with items such as safety pins, lip gloss, mints, face powder, hair spray, and tissues.
Wedding Day Eat breakfast. Get your hair and makeup done. Give the bridal party and your parents their gifts. Relax, and enjoy your day. 22 INDIANA BRIDE | SUMMER 2013

Get Your Guy Involved Months of planning can take place
between the proposal and honeymoon. A groom can get lost in the process, but he should have an identity in the big day as well. Understanding your groom might not be interested in every detail, but letting him have a chance to get involved, will likely get him to help out. “Grooms today are different than 10 years ago,” says Gloria Boyden, owner of Events by Design. “They don’t need as much coaxing.”
www.TheSiners.com
From the traditional responsibilities of the groom’s family funding and hosting the rehearsal dinner to the newer tradition of a groom toasting his bride, the expected responsibilities follow: Reservations
When arranging transportation from the wedding to the reception and then to your after-celebration accommodations, your groom should be eager to find a classic car or a fully stocked limo to transport you to the next destination. Finalizing weddingnight accommodations and honeymoon bookings also falls into your groom’s hands. Purchases
Are one or more groomsmen coming from out of town? Your groom should be the one paying for their travel expenses and giving each of his guys a small gift expressing his gratitude for them sharing in his special day. The groom should also purchase both mothers’ corsages, all of the boutonnieres, and the bride’s bouquet. Organization
Your groom needs to name his groomsmen and make a list of guests he wishes to invite. He should also consider his weddingregistry wants. Maybe it’s a new kitchen gadget or the latest technology gizmo he’d love to have while watching the big game. A frank discussion early on in the weddingplanning process is all it should take to let your groom know that not only do you need his help, but that you want it as well. Though wedding planning is something men may view as the bride’s territory, it’s important they have a say in more than just what they get to drink at the end of the night. Grooms deserve their big day too. — Brittany Watson SUMMER 2013 | INDIANA BRIDE 23
