forward out of the passenger seat, into the center of the dashboard. Her head collided with the rearview mirror while the airbags imploded around both sides of her body, crushing her. Bill sustained minor injuries, but the accident would leave Grace with two broken ankles, two broken legs, a shattered rotator cuff, and four broken ribs.
“We both moved here, we met here, and we married here.” The Stratford, Carmel’s Premier Rental Retirement Community, is a place that many call home. But to Bill and Grace Branic, it is so much more. In Bill’s words, “We both moved here, we met here, and we married here.” Their lives radically changed on November 16, 2011. “At the time, we still didn’t know what hit us,” remembered Grace. A car hit the driver’s side where Bill was seated, pushing their vehicle into a pole on the passenger side. Grace was thrust up and
“The swelling was so bad that the doctors couldn’t cast anything. They weren’t sure I was going to walk again, let alone live.” While in the hospital, the couple celebrated their first wedding anniversary. In December, Grace could be moved to The Retreat at The Stratford where she was able to take part in the on-site long-term rehabilitation care. The two agree that The Retreat presented a wonderful environment for healing. It worked out well for the couple. Bill was able to visit with Grace during the day and ride the elevator up a floor to their apartment where they had lived for over a year. Now back in their Independent Living Apartment, Grace is able to walk alongside her husband. “The nurses were absolutely amazing. My therapy has been outstanding. When I came here, I couldn’t move my right leg or right arm. Now I can. There is not a better place in Indianapolis than this place. There is no competition.”

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I LOVED PEDALING MY PURPLE BIKE around the neighborhood. I religiously read The Baby-Sitters Club series and dressed up my family of Barbies before they tooled around in their hot-pink RV—all normal activities for a preadolescent. Something else I really enjoyed was, I admit, a bit more unusual: I loved playing “real estate agent.” I’d make up neighborhoods with cozy, welcoming names—Briar Meadows, Evergreen Farms—taking cues from actual communities my family drove by on Indy’s north side. Once I had a name, I’d then create listings for my “buyers,” detailing features like the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, whether there was a basement, and if the backyard had a deck. Later, as my family considered building a new house, I visited models with my mom and pored over floor plans, translating those rudimentary outlines of bedrooms and bathrooms to real life by visualizing what our furniture—and, more importantly, our lives—would look like in those spaces. Even at a young age I knew that a dwelling is so much more than just four walls and a roof, an idea carried out by the families whose homes we show in this issue. In “Old World Elegance” (page 63), a family transplanted from Toronto tapped interior designer Julie Boutilier to craft the perfect mix of comfort and function to suit their needs. Wait until you see their pool table. The home featured in “Wide Open Spaces” (page 70) was the outcome of careful planning by the owners, who ensured that every room and detail fit their busy lifestyle perfectly—I especially love the sparkling light fixtures peppered throughout. Of course, creating the ideal space isn’t limited to indoor areas. After shoveling through a winter that seemed endless, I think we’re all ready to spend as much time as possible outside. It’s hard to think of a better setting for doing so than the one featured in “Backyard Paradise” (page 78). Packed with amenities like an outdoor kitchen and lush landscaping, the project was implemented over the course of several years, but I think you’ll agree that the wait was worth it. We hope you’ll discover inspiration among these pages and find a few ideas to incorporate into your own home—whether it be real or one that lives only in your dreams.

Lamp Revamp Adding a dysfunctional fan to your home decor might not seem appealing, but these repurposed Emerson oscillator styles can shed some light on why doing so is a good idea. The exposed incandescence from the five 25-watt Edison bulbs emits a warm glow, lending any space an industrial ambience. The two available matching lamps from the early 1900s can be placed on tables or on a wall as sconces. Antique Emerson Type 6250 10" fan lamps, $325 each. Rogue Decor Co., see listing, page 124.

IM HOME | 2014
IF YOU’RE IN NEED OF HOMEdecor inspiration, it could strike when you least expect it—like when you’re biting into a juicy burger or twirling sauce-drenched pasta around your fork. A restaurant’s interior, it seems, receives nearly as much attention as how well its food tastes and how potent its cocktails are. So take a look around the next time you’re out to eat. Or start with these features, each of which has diners talking. But not with their mouths full, we hope.

Table: 10 West Cicero’s newest restaurant, 10 West, sports a casual look with elements of brick, metal, limestone, and wood. The latter is highlighted in the restaurant’s large poplar table, which seats up to 12. “Everyone has a good time there,” says co-owner Brett Morrow. The table’s central location and size make it impossible to miss. Morrow and contractor Steve Stack-
house visited a woodsmith in Strawtown, who cut the 18-foot-tall poplar tree down to 13 feet. It was then configured to the right width, coated with several layers of polyurethane, and connected to walls on each end. “We wanted to retain the bark,” Morrow says. “It gives the aesthetics of a rustic look.” Several guests have asked how they can get a similar item in their own homes. Morrow’s response? “I’ve sent a bunch of people to the sawmill.”

Paint color: Petite Chou Bistro & Champagne Bar With a menu big on French fare like croque sandwiches and tartines, it only makes sense for the interior of Petite Chou Bistro & Champagne Bar to be Frenchflavored, too. And it doesn’t get more Parisian than Chanel. After owner Martha Hoover visited the fashion house’s flagship boutique on Rue Cambon in the City of Light, she was inspired to re-create the shop’s gray-and-cream color palette in the Clay Terrace outpost. But not just any old gray would do. Once mixed to the proper hue, the color was checked in the morning, the afternoon, and the evening to ensure it looked right in various lighting. So many diners have said oui, s’il vous plait to the shade that the Carmel Drive location of PPG Porter Paints now sells the custom mix for a serving of Petite Chou in any home. GET THE LOOK: Petite Chou Gray paint, $41.45/gallon. PPG Porter Paints, 148 W. Carmel Dr., 575-8011, ppg porterpaints.com
Lighting: Plat 99 Some guests think they look like jellyfish. Others are reminded of various food items. No matter how they’re interpreted, the light fixtures at CityWay’s Plat 99 are definitely a talking point. “It’s cool that people have their own perception of what the lights are,” says manager Michael Gray. “I have a new favorite on any given night.” The brain behind the bar’s interior was artist Jorge Pardo, who was hired on three years before the spot even opened. Pardo
tapped into his Cuban roots to create the colorful fixtures, of which there are—you guessed it—99. Each one is different in some way, whether it’s color, shape, size, or the height at which it hangs down, Gray says. Some diners have asked where they can purchase their own. They can’t— unless they contract Pardo for a version especially made for them. GET THE LOOK: George Kovacs by Karim Rashid Soft Pendant, $719. Houseworks, see listing, page 124
Tile: Bru Burger Though it can be hard to see when each of the tall chairs are lined up, the neutraltoned tile beneath the bar at Bru Burger still manages to catch people’s attention. Maybe it’s because of its bronze-metallic glint. Or maybe it’s the unique 3-D look. Either way, the tile fit in perfectly with Bru’s design scheme: warm finishes, hardwood floors—the kind of place where downtown corporate types would want to gather, says Loree Everette, president of Phanomen/design, which planned the Mass Ave restaurant’s interior. “On the bar, you always have to do something durable,” she says. “It’s such a long surface that it should be something worth looking at.” Everette suggests homeowners use it for a backsplash, a fireplace surround, or as a bookshelf insert. “It’s a great tile,” she says. “We get a lot of people talking about it.” GET THE LOOK: Bristol Studios Design Oceans Rust tile, $42.75/ square foot. WHAT DOES YOUR HOME’S ART say about you? Does it say, “A sophisticated, cultured person lives here?” Or does it imply that your tastes haven’t changed since college? Artwork can break up a blank wall and start a conversation. It can complement a colorful interior design and be a wise financial investment. But art newbies may be overwhelmed by the choices. Oil or watercolor? Paintings or sculptures? Traditional or modern?

beyond the extraordinary
As in art, antiques, wine and collectibles, the appeal of an extraordinary home is in its distinctive character. Encore Sotheby’s International Realty professionals represent homes with this distinction in mind, offering an unparalleled level of real estate service to each client.

Take your time to visit galleries and check out local art shows. Listen to the art—what is it trying to say to you? “You really want your art to be something you love and something that evokes an emotional response,” says Chris Mallon, co-owner of the Editions Limited gallery. “It really should be something you collect for life and something you build upon.”
“A piece of art will usually speak to you one way or another.” Artwork can be a modest purchase or a hefty investment. Oftentimes, the buyers are at the mercy of the gallery owner or art dealer, who places his or her reputation behind the inventory. Think hard before spending money, says Rhonda Long-Sharp, owner of Long-Sharp Gallery. “The best thing a smart collector can do is start slowly and carefully,” she says. “Find a quality gallery and deal with someone you know.” Discerning between an authentic piece of artwork and a reproduction can be tricky, Mallon says. Do your homework to become acquainted with the artist’s signature and other works. You can also call in an appraiser for a fee that could be more than $300. She recommends using those who are accredited by the International Fine Art Appraisers or the American Society of Appraisers. Still, an appraisal may not always equal authentication. That’s why Mallon says it’s important to trust the gallery that is handling the sale. Don’t be afraid to mix styles. Some people like landscapes, some like abstracts, and others wind up with both on their walls because each piece touches a different part of their heart. One work may give you the warm fuzzies, while another serves as a fresh source of inspiration each time you look at it. “A piece of art will usually speak to you one way or another,” Mallon says. “Then you can decide if you want it on your wall.” n 36

MIXING & MATCHING Ready to finally fill that large, blank wall? A display of framed photos and artwork can personalize your home and add unique style. A little forethought can mean the difference between a sloppy exhibit and one that serves as a work of art all its own. “Our clients are searching for individuality, and their collections of photographs and artwork can help identify their passions,” says Julie Boutilier, owner of Cornerstone Interiors. She offers some hints for bringing pieces together: • When working with photographs, anchor the display with a large chest, a buffet table, or even a bed. • Pull in the viewer with an enlarged photo no less than one-third of the width of the furniture below it. • Surround the focal point with other photographs of interest. It’s okay to vary the frames, but keep the mood consistent. “Very modern frames with very traditional ones can be confusing,” Boutilier says. • Artwork groupings can be less structured. Feel free to mix contemporary and traditional styles, and place them where they will be appreciated.

THOUGH GRANITE, QUARTZ, and marble remain popular choices in countertop materials, a number of less-traditional options can give your surfaces a more unique look and a signature touch. “Concrete, copper, and other materials are becoming the new granite in countertop trends,” says J.D. Dick, AKBD, a designer with Cabinetry Ideas. “It’s all pretty comparative in price and very available, depending on what a client wants.”

Copper Brandon Reeve, president and owner of Circle City Copperworks, suggests that those looking for something different may want to consider copper sheeting to give an island or a bar top a warm, rich feel and accent the overall space. “Copper is not something that you want to put on every countertop, but it can give you a completely different look,” he says. “It’s very comparable in price to granite, and it will never erode or wear away, but it does change over time, and that’s something that homeowners need to know.
A butcher-block top by Indiana Kitchen Company warms up this island.
Concrete
Butcher block
Dick works with many younger clients who are bypassing the traditional and choosing poured concrete for more of an urban-luxe look. “People can really create a beautiful, custom look with concrete,” he says. “We recently did a countertop for Decorators’ Show House that used three sizes of crushed turquoise glass embedded into concrete that pulled in the bright colors of the room to give it tone, depth, and texture.” Poured concrete can be completely customized. It’s much like granite in terms of stain resistance, and once sealed, concrete is simple to maintain. Homeowners can choose just about any color they want, and decorative finishes can offer looks such as wood grain, terrazzo, travertine, marble, and slate. “The way they’re put together, it’s like a beautiful piece of pottery,” Dick says. “It’s similar to natural stone and affords people something exotic with just as much precise detailing.”
Butcher block is another material that has obvious functional appeal, but designers say that homeowners are eschewing traditional woods in favor of more exotic materials, such as black walnut, iroko, and European cherry. Though Jon Oliver, AKBD, owner and designer at Indiana Kitchen Company, says butcher block hasn’t quite hit Indiana in full swing yet, those who have installed it usually want to complement their kitchen island. “It’s no longer just the traditional maple like we are used to seeing for practicality,” he says. The price of butcher block depends on the species of wood and the treatment applied. Maintenance can vary based on the countertop’s initial finish—some may need attention more frequently than others. “It’s something to consider if someone is tired of granite or wants to add an accent piece to an island or prep area,” Oliver says.

Circle City Copperworks topped off the bar in this Fishers home with medieval-hammered copper and a lightly mottled patina.
Some will like the fact that it is a changeable material, while others will hate it.” To protect the copper, Reeve recommends treating the surface with a food-grade wax every six to 12 months or using a clear lacquer to safeguard the patina against water damage. Eventually, the metal will darken. “It’s part of the charm of copper,” Reeve says. n

IM HOME | 2014
IT’S FINALLY THE SEASON FOR dining al fresco. Your meal doesn’t need to be fussy, and neither does your decor. Creating an interesting tablescape for outdoor soirees means finding functional items to pull double duty and using colors and patterns to fit your theme.
ENTER TAINING
The base Event designers say that the best foundation to any table is a good linen. This can be a solid color or a bold print, but whatever you choose, it should contrast with the charger plates and other materials layering the table. “I prefer to keep things simple on the top and use the bold pattern of the linen to shine through,” says Kate Berglund, creative principal of KB Design. “Right now, the trend is tribal patterns and bold florals. It only takes one piece to give you that ‘wow’ factor, and an inexpensive tablecloth is an easy way to do it.”
For a centerpiece, first consider scale, and remember that anything too tall is at risk of taking flight with a burst of wind. Molander also likes using various textures, such as different varieties of flowers that bring the landscape right to your table. “It looks natural, but it pops with the different textures,” she says. Fill several glass bottles with a couple of blooms in each, or pair one stem with greenery to make the arrangement a bit more substantial. Candles and lanterns
add a nice glow. And depending on your theme, a whimsical touch is always fun. At a beach-themed party, for example, fill glass cylinders with sand and seashells. “They’re inexpensive and reusable,” Molander says. For another event, she used salt-andpepper shakers made out of Corona bottles. “The important thing is to look for items that keep the party atmosphere comfortable and casual.” n
5 FUN PARTY THEMES Expecting a crowd? Kate Berglund and Stacy Molander share their ideas for a memorable outdoor get-together: • THE GREAT GATSBY: Bold florals, metallic dinnerware, jazz music, and customized cocktails • ICE CREAM SOCIAL: A few classic flavors, lots of toppings, turn-of-thecentury tunes, and plenty of bright pastel colors • CINCO DE MAYO: Vibrant hues, Fiestaware, southwestern prints, and margaritas
Carry on the motif of your party with place settings to welcome each guest. These are by Pink Poppy Ink.
The extras Aim for fun and functional. Once a great linen is in place, hosts can jazz up the table with simple dinnerware they already own. Stacy Molander, designer with Rusted Window Decor & Gifts, likes melamine because of its sturdiness. “It classes it up a bit, and you don’t have to worry about it busting like old paper plates,” she says. Mixing and matching patterns is still in vogue, but scouring consignment and antique shops can net one-of-a-kind items that you can use over and over again. “Warm colors, such as oranges, butter yellows, golden browns, and turquoise, are popular, so it’s very easy to find party elements that can lend to a southwest theme,” Berglund says. “That can be accented with cacti, which can be used in your garden once the party is over.” 44

The stone on the home’s exterior was also used on the walls flanking the bar, as well as on an upstairs fireplace. “Pulling some of that exterior stone inside helped our overall concept for the flow of the house,” the owner says. Dual TVs create a backdrop for party themes—at a recent birthday celebration, family pictures scrolled on both screens.
Built for enjoyment and function, the bar boasts two under-cabinet refrigerators, an icemaker, dishwasher drawers, a sink, and a microwave. A distressed finish and a warm-gray stain enhance maple Medallion cabinets from Michael S. Johnson & Co. Cabinetmakers in Ingalls, Indiana.
The focal point of the bar is the display liquor shelves accented by the smoky-black mirror backdrop. Fancy a cranberry martini or St. Germain and champagne? “We like to create fun drinks,” the owner says.

WHEN DESIGNING THIS CANAL PLACE home on Geist Reservoir, the owners wanted a rustic, contemporary look that imbued a sense of harmony among all spaces. “As we built the house, we wanted a flow from room to room, but we also wanted a flow from the inside to the outside,” the owner says. “We wanted to create a space that was masculine and feminine—to take some strong details and then soften them.” They worked with Michele Boggs of MB Designs to help fashion a comfortable yet functional bar area that was ideal for entertaining. “Anyone would want to hang out in this space,” Boggs says. Maroon Cohiba granite countertops have chiseled edges to add texture to the wine storage cubes on both sides of the bar. “There’s always a bottle of wine open when we’re entertaining,” says the owner.
Stone Artisans provided the reclaimed wood used on the facade of the 10foot island, which features the same metal accents as its countertop.

2. A NOD TO THE PAST AFTER MOVING TO THEIR HOME IN CARMEL, THE NAVILLE FAMILY created a Whiskey Room on the main level where they serve up whiskeys, bourbons, and scotches exclusively. The built-in wet bar was already there, but they added personal touches with family photos and a series of whiskey menus acquired on travels. Although the lower level features a full-service bar, the upstairs spot is everyone’s favorite. “The Whiskey Room is always open,” Jason Naville says. “That’s where we end up anytime we’re entertaining.”
Jason discovered this porcelain collector’s bottle sporting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway logo in the basement of his greatgrandfather’s house. The bottle is from the Americana Collection by J.W. Dant Distillery. Also discovered were companion bottles depicting the Boston Tea Party and the shootout at the Alamo.
These pint whiskey bottles were stashed in Jason’s great-grandparents’ attic. Easily hidden in a vest pocket, they were his greatgrandfather’s solution to imbibing while staying in his wife’s good graces.
No gathering is complete without a traditional toast to the 93-year-old matriarch of the family. “Grandma Jane still enjoys her whiskey and a good card game,” Jason says.
Ten years ago, the Navilles purchased this late-1700s piece, which once graced a hotel bar in Paris, at an antique-furniture auction in Evansville. It features detailed carving, scrolled ironwork, and the original skeleton keys. The price? $267. “It was a nice find,” Jason says. “You might say it was a steal.”
48

Currently, the room houses 126 different whiskeys, bourbons, and scotches. The couple acquired many of them over the years, but several are gifts. “A nice bottle of whiskey always does the trick,” Jason says. If he had to choose just one, it’d be his bottle of Midleton Irish Whiskey from Jameson Distillery.

3. PRACTICAL & PERSONAL RENOVATING THE ENTIRE LOWER LEVEL OF THIS ZIONSVILLE HOME was a top priority for the current owners, who purchased it in 2010. They worked with Carmel-based Case Design/Remodeling to create a space that looked elegant but fun. “We weren’t going for a particular style,” the owner says. “We have eclectic tastes in furnishings and eclectic tastes in wine.” Besides the bar, the basement includes areas for wine-tasting, games, and watching TV, as well as a guest bedroom and bathroom.
This old photograph of the Boston College football team features the husband’s grandfather, adding a familial touch to the mini-bar, as do the personalized beer glasses.
The custom cherry cabinets by Shiloh Cabinetry were given a black, distressed finish that complements the Pergaminho granite countertops from Classic Stone. There’s ample wine storage beneath the backsplash.
This personalized sign is made in the style of a wine barrel.
You won’t find these award-winning beers on tap anywhere locally. They come from Starr Hill Brewery, owned by her husband’s childhood friend, in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Not one for beer? No problem. The U-Line wine cooler/refrigerator next to the Kegerator holds 40 bottles of wine.
No one would guess this decorative display for wine bottles is a cover for the mechanical and storage area. You’ll find some Spanish reds— the couple’s favorite—and a smattering of other varietals in their collection, which typically includes at least 100 bottles.
Created from corks the owners collected over a span of 20 years, this backsplash earns rave reviews from visitors. “It’s quite a conversation piece,” the owner says. She gathered pointers from Houzz.com and Pinterest, took her bulging bag of corks to North Carolina so her dad could split them lengthwise, and then drove home and assembled it. “It worked out beautifully,” she says.

“Believe it or not, these bar stools came from Pier One,” the owner says. The simple lines of the black-wood-and-leather chairs work well in the space and make for comfy socializing or watching the TV hung above the backsplash. Chadwick mini-pendants by ELK Lighting in an oiled-bronze finish create ambience and coordinate with the lighting in the game area.

Illuminating the Outdoors HIGHLIGHT FEATURES, ADD SAFETY, AND BOOST CURB APPEAL WITH EXTERIOR LIGHTING By Tracy Martin
52
IM HOME | 2014
WHEN WE WERE YOUNG, OUR mothers would leave the front porch light burning in the evening to guide us back home. That glow still evokes the same warmth and welcome, but outdoor lighting has evolved into a much larger art form—one that complements architectural features and landscape design to create a much more sophisticated look.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS
See the light At first, homeowners may want professional landscape lighting because the space around their house feels too dark, says Ralph Redmond, owner of Indiana Outdoor Lighting. “But once we produce a design, the benefits of adding more light become obvious,” he says. One of those perks is highlighting a yard’s features. Techniques like architectural up-lighting focus the attention on unique landscape and features like significant archways, shapely trees, or interesting angles, says Tim Ryan, owner of Lite-4 Outdoor Lighting. Extended usability is a natural outcome of good lighting design. Well-lit patios and lawns set the stage for making the most out of after-work hours with things like evening picnics and entertaining friends and family. Good lighting also adds drama and elegance to a home’s curb appeal. Building a complex lighting design requires a trained eye—it’s much more than just screwing in a lightbulb. “I first determine which lens I’ll use to spread or tweak the light beam to create a certain effect, and which fixture will work best to hold that lamp and lens in each given location and situation,” Ryan explains.
The right lighting (here, by Lite-4) can enable use of outdoor areas even at night.
LIGHTS OUT Planning an outdoor-lighting scheme? Here’s what not to do. • Floodlights create a sense of security but can be bothersome to neighbors. “We can do much more with ambience to improve security than with floodlights or other harsh lighting solutions,” Ryan says. • Outdoor lighting is typically the last amenity to be installed during a landscaping project, so it’s often the first to get cut when budgets run low, Ryan says. He advises setting aside a few thousand dollars for a quality system. If needed, scale back your softscaping budget by using smaller plants. “Trees and shrubs will grow,” he says. • Homeowners often overuse light fixtures along pathways. “Most path lights distribute a 15-foot diameter of light,” Redmond says. “Sometimes, when lights are spaced apart 10 feet or less, the result is inelegant—like an airport runway.” • Using less-than-professional-grade equipment and installation techniques may not produce the look you want. “Most lighting products available to consumers are lightweight, breakable, and not backed by an adequate warranty,” Redmond says. “Strict attention to waterproof connections and applied voltage is necessary for reliable performance.”
“I would rather people see a beautifully lit wall or piece of sculpture rather than have their eyes drawn to a light fixture.” Professionals strive to maintain scene continuity (a seamless flow of lighting) while eliminating dark areas, otherwise known as black holes. The entry and interesting architectural and landscape features receive the brightest light, while the in-between spaces are illuminated at lower brightness levels, Redmond explains.
Bollard lanterns from Indiana Outdoor Lighting illuminate and beautify landscapes.
54
IM HOME | 2014
Better protection Well-conceived professional lighting increases security and discourages intrud-
ers by eliminating dark corners, shadows, and hiding places, Redmond says. “We assess the area to highlight pathways, steps, and elevation changes in the landscape, which increases safety and directs the flow of traffic nicely to the front door,” Ryan adds. Lights that bring a measure of security don’t necessarily have to serve as motion sensors as well. “I prefer to use techniques that’ll make your house pretty, but at the same time, a byproduct is safety without all the glares,” Redmond says. “If that’s an objective, we can do it tastefully.” n

the living area outdoors. Her home boasts a porch that’s open in front and screened in along one side, perfect for enjoying summertime meals or curling up with a book on a rainy afternoon. Both spaces have cozy sitting areas. Taken together, the porch allows the couple to spend nearly all of their free time outside, regardless of the weather or the time of day. “We always remark how amazing it is that we don’t go indoors to do anything except wash the dishes,” Audrey says. An assortment of artfully arranged houseplants complements the greenery of their front yard and the expansive Fort Parade Grounds across the street. With plenty of porch space available, Audrey had the luxury of creating a multitiered collection of plants at one end, adding privacy and

personality. She relied on low-light, lowwater varieties, like the sansevieria plants that are peppered throughout. Vintage vineyard buckets and grapevine trees add a rustic touch. Wicker baskets and white pottery create a dramatic contrast that extends to the wicker chairs and glass-top table that Audrey purchased several years ago. “They’ve lasted since,” she says. “I just change the cushions when I need to.” The screened-in porch serves as both 58

PORCH POINTERS If you’re looking for more living space, the solution could be outside. “I think people are really thinking about their exterior as much as they think about their interior,” Audrey Studley says. She offers a few suggestions for those who want to make the most of their outdoor spaces. CONSIDER FUNCTION. Will you be eating outdoors? Make room for a small table. Do you want to enjoy the area during even the warmest summer nights? Install ceiling fans to keep the air flowing. And if you plan to host parties, make sure the furnishings are conducive to creating an intimate gathering space. PICK YOUR COLORS. Is your porch in a sunny spot? Consider soothing, cool tones to counter the heat. Does the area sit adjacent to an open interior space, like a kitchen or a family room? Keep the colors consistent. Purchase some throw pillows and outdoor rugs that accentuate the rest of the home’s palette. “Sometimes when you see the entire porch from the interior, you might want to do some sort of progression where the color translates, either from the outside in or from the inside out,” Audrey says. LIMIT YOUR TRIPS INSIDE. You want to be able to relax in your outside space, not spend all of your time running indoors. Audrey keeps a basket of hand lotions in her screened-in porch. If you’re a person of a certain age who likes to read, you may want to stock up on inexpensive reading glasses so you don’t have to always search for a pair when it’s time to crack open a book. Coldnatured friends and family members might appreciate a few blankets to stay warm during cooler evenings. “You just need to make it comfortable,” Audrey says.
an entrance and a segue to the formal home. Audrey found a Lane Venture outdoor sofa that was shallow enough to fit the narrow space, and she keeps a pillow and blanket nearby when it’s time for a nap. She and Mark spend many hours reading out there, so it’s only natural to have a bookcase filled with novels and birding books. Ceiling fans are a must, Audrey points out, especially during the warm, humid months.
Thanks to the porch, the Studleys can enjoy the outdoors during all but the coldest times of year. The space works perfectly for just the two of them, but it also can handle a party full of guests who gravitate outdoors. “I think people need to be flexible so that their space can become something else quickly,” Audrey says. “Porches are easy and can be conducive to relaxing no matter how big the crowd.” n

LIVABLE LUXURY is the hallmark of Sean and Tina Hallett’s home. When Sean, president and co-owner of the Indy Fuel hockey team, moved his family from Toronto to Carmel just last October, he hoped their five-year-old Italian countryside residence would seem as though it had been there for centuries. “He bought the home from his father, and he really wanted it to feel new again, but also as though it had history,” says Julie Boutilier, interior designer

and owner of Cornerstone Interiors. “We were able to give them an eclectic look that nods to the equestrian theme they loved, as well as a deep, rich, Old World Italian charm.” The Halletts wished for their home to reflect their personal tastes, aiming for “magazine ready,” yet still comfortable and functional, Tina says. They also wished for equine influences inspired by the neighboring horse farm.
the ‘mane’ event Each room has its own color palette with warm-brown tones unifying the home. Sunny yellows greet guests in the formal living room, a cozy gathering area dominated by a 200-year-old baby-grand piano the couple brought with them from Canada. Boutilier created a custom sofa to accent the picture window and installed fender seating around the fireplace. The room may be a tight space, but it was a labor of love for Boutilier. She replaced the existing tile around the fireplace with a chevron-style Ann Sacks Flair Mosaic tile, faux-painted the fireplace, added wallpaper to the back of the bookcases for texture, and found plenty of horse sculptures to accent the room. It’s one of Tina’s favorite spaces. “Our living room just has so much character and history that I feel like I’m back in time to another era,” she says. “I have a smile on my face every time I walk by it.” The serene formal dining room includes pearlized grasscloth wallpaper; a robin’s-egg blue, olive green, and gray color scheme; an open butler’s pantry; and geometric shapes reflected in glass and mirror elements. “We really played up the diagonals and textures in the room,” Boutilier says. “The homeowners liked the idea of wallpaper and cushions, and they wanted to incorporate their collection of vintage posters and art. We actually took this color palette from one of their paintings that hangs in the hallway.” Across the hall is the nerve center of the home: the kitchen/family room/breakfast nook. In the family room, Boutilier added diagonal alderwood pieces to stonework surrounding the fireplace to give the space a focal point. She outfitted the room with furnishings from Cornerstone Interiors and Restoration Hardware.

Warm tones are plentiful in the kitchen, which features a high ceiling and an equally impressive range surround.

The biggest change, though, was in the kitchen. Boutilier transformed the basic drywall behind the range into something truly spectacular by adding a backsplash composed of a mix of mosaic and hand-painted tile and a hearth-like surround of Realstone tile that soars about 20 feet high. “I wanted to make that space feel more important,” she says. “We had a wonderful artist who mitered every one of those tiles so that they would fit well in the corners. That gave the room an amazing improvement and really added depth to the space.”
unbridled comfort Tranquility is the key to the Halletts’ main-floor master suite and their second-level guest bedroom. Both areas include several pieces that came with the family from Toronto, along with a few items Boutilier chose. “The arch over the bed [in the master bedroom] was already there, but it wasn’t tufted, so we did that,” she says. Tone-on-tone damask wallpaper and new vanity mirrors and light fixtures were added to the master bathroom. The entire space evokes a feeling of staying in a fancy hotel. “We absolutely would not change a single thing in this room,” Tina says. The guest room features an antique rolltop desk, a comfortable leather chair, and a decorative—but functional— telescope from Restoration Hardware. “The leather is really comfortable, and the desk is just great,” Boutilier says. “It’s a perfect addition to the guest space.” Upstairs, the kids’ playroom functions as both a quiet place to study and a spot to hang out with friends. It has two homework stations, a comfortable sofa, and a toy closet, while the son and daughter’s bedrooms reflect the overall style of the home. For the Halletts’ son, Boutilier created a masculine space with a beadboard ceiling, a large model of the Eiffel Tower, and metal shelving behind the bed, providing ample room for books. In the daughter’s room, Boutilier was tickled pink to create a fairytale-like space that uses two different wallpaper designs, a full-sized carousel horse, and a light fixture of handmade glass that resembles spun candy.
The beadboard ceiling adds texture to the son’s room. An avid reader, he’s able to stash his book collection within close reach of the bed.
The second-floor playroom doubles as a homework spot and a place for the Hallett kids to spend time with their friends.

basement horsepower The mood changes on the home’s lower level. Sean wanted to create a man cave that would have the look and feel of a garage. After owning one of Canada’s largest Ford dealerships, Sean found a unique way to infuse the auto industry into his home. Welcoming guests to the basement is a Ford Mustang pool table, complete with working lights, chrome bumpers and hardware, and alloy wheels. “I don’t know where he found it, but it’s really a great piece, and it inspired us to go a little nuts down here,” Boutilier says. The sunken media room and bar area include furnishings from Cornerstone Interiors, Restoration Hardware, and Midland Arts & Antiques Market. Flanking the fireplace are walls covered in faux-brick panels. A gym and an additional nautical-themed guest bedroom fill out the basement. There’s no horsin’ around: The Hallett home is a triplecrown winner. “The whole house offers them eclectic elegance and a nurturing space that takes care of them rather than the other way around,” Boutilier says. And perhaps because of that, the Halletts feel right at home in the Hoosier State. “Even though Toronto will always stay close to our hearts, Indiana is truly special, and we hope to never leave,” Tina says. ■

THE TWO-STORY ENTRYWAY of Dani and Andre Kohl’s Zionsville home is impressive yet inviting. The space, bracketed by an open floor plan and huge windows, feels more like the lobby of a palatial retreat than the centralized living area for a family of four. “We can watch TV in the family area and still play a board game with the kids in the center of the house,” Dani says. “We are very hands-on parents, and we wanted an efficient space where everyone can feel close.” The secret is all in the planning. When the couple found the lot in the Stonegate neighborhood that would someday be home to their young family, they knew it was important to consider the interiors as well as the exteriors, lifestyle as well as the floorplan, and the future as well as the present. Such a task was familiar to Dani, an architect and owner of Kohl Interiors, an interior-design company.

“We knew that we wanted a lot of windows to let in natural light and bring the outdoors in,” Dani says. “But as an architect as well as an interior designer, I also thought about where the TV would go, where the fireplace would be, what furniture elements would be in the room, and how our lifestyle would fit into the space. “We’ve been in the house for six months now, and looking back on it, we wouldn’t do anything different.”
Behind barn doors, the home office is punctuated by a zebra-print rug.
fuss-free interior IT’S EASY TO SEE WHY the Kohls are so happy. The whole home boasts efficiency with a sleek, monochromatic color scheme. The living room is in the center of the house below a high ceiling that spans both stories. The space is bordered by a powder room, a home office, the family room, the dining room, and the kitchen, all of which feed directly into the gathering space. With this setup, everyone can see each other, which was the goal. “We wanted a floorplan that would integrate the whole house so that everyone could interact, rather than having a bunch of little rooms that felt like cubicles,” Dani says.

The couple also likes to entertain, so they needed plenty of room for family and friends. On any given evening, the Kohls may have guests lingering over coffee in the dining area in the front of the house while the kids play in the basement. Or, they might gather around the massive 5-foot-by-10-foot kitchen island that features a seamless slab of solid white marble. “The island top was our biggest splurge,” Dani says. “I wasn’t sure we could find something that size without a seam, but we did. We also really wanted to have some contrast in here, so we used espresso cabinetry and a white top for the island, and then a black-granite countertop along the perimeter with white cabinets.” Crystal chandeliers over the island add some glamour, and though it’s a big space, Dani says it still feels cozy. The house is filled with a number of interesting touches that give the space complementary contrast. Modern hardware is juxtaposed against the office’s barn doors, which Dani custom designed, and also the wooden beams of the ceiling. Sleek furnishings are accented with accessories purchased while traveling overseas. Colorful art-

separate yet together THE SECOND STORY of the home features a split but open floorplan between the master suite and the kids’ area that affords everyone privacy, but still maintains the theme of integration. The couple’s son and daughter are still young, and they like knowing that they can see Mom and Dad wherever they are. In time, though, they know the kids will want their own spaces. The master suite is comprised of the bedroom, the bathroom, the closet, and the laundry room, which can also be accessed through the hallway. Once again, the Kohls opted for clean lines and a consistent look without overt repetition. “I love patterns and textures and consisten-

cy, but not everything has to match,” Dani says. “That’s why you’ll notice the lamps are both crystal but two different styles. The nightstands coordinate, but they are two different pieces.” Across the stainless-steel cabled mezzanine is the kids’ wing. Instead of choosing characterladen decor, Dani opted for neutral palettes that would allow them to transform the space as they age. In their previous home, the couple’s children shared a Jack-and-Jill bathroom, but in this new abode, they thought each child needed his and her individual space. “They are young now, but we aren’t planning to move from this house any time soon,” says Dani, “and we wanted something that would grow with them and give them a little bit of privacy. My son’s bathroom is more masculine, and my daughter’s is more feminine and has a bigger closet—which my son says is unfair—but she is a girl, and we’re thinking of future needs, as well.”

THE KOHLS’ HOME is proof that if homeowners prep wisely, they really can have it all. One thing that made the whole process a lot easier is that both Dani and Andre were on the same page about what they wanted in their home. Andre, who works at Allison Transmission, says his colleagues told him that building a house together would be difficult because each would have their own tastes. As it turned out, that wasn’t the case. “There were a lot of decisions to be made, and we were constantly hunched over our iPads choosing things,” Andre says. “But we both knew that we wanted a house that was integrated, uncluttered, and would fit into our lifestyle needs.” By taking the time to plan everything out during the pre-design phase, they were able to make use of items they already had and feel confident that the house would suit them perfectly once they moved in. “In so many cases, people work with an architect and then hire a designer when they can’t figure out how to make it all work,” Dani says. “By that point, it’s too late, but taking the time to plan makes all the difference. There’s always a lot of stress when you are building a house, but all in all, we had a great experience, and we love it here.” ■

BY THE TEXTURE AND TRANQUILITY OF THE COLORADO ROCKIES, Brett and Stephanie Mann’s Greenwood property is a treat for the senses. With a cornucopia of color and natural materials, the sprawling utopia is the perfect place to enjoy a quiet evening at home or entertain friends and relatives. “We have a big family, and we are very close,” Brett says. “Plus, the boys have a lot of friends that like to hang out, so whenever there isn’t a project going on, we usually have people over.” The Manns didn’t have a grandiose plan in mind when they began their landscape project

eight years ago. They knew it would be completed in stages and that they wanted to couple calming water features with smooth stones, big boulders, and eclectic yard art. They turned to Lowell Rolsky, president of Pro Care Horticultural Services, to bring that concept to life. “It turned out to be 10 times better than I ever thought it would be,” Brett says. “When Lowell gets a vision in his head, it comes out bigger and better than you can possibly imagine.”

In addition to the home, there’s a yoga studio, an outdoor kitchen, a pool and a pool house, and a dining shelter, which was built four years ago to accommodate large family gatherings. It was the site of the Thanksgiving feast in 2012 and easily held 30 guests. Brett credits Stephanie for styling the outdoor areas with furnishings from Restoration Hardware. Her experience in interior design helped create a warm and inviting outdoor-living space. or Pro Care’s Rolsky, one of the more interesting aspects of the job was the variety of natural stone used to create the overall aesthetic. In order to bring the mountains to the Midwest, his first task was to create a waterfall made from Green County sandstone in front of Stephanie’s yoga studio, adding Zen-like serenity to a place of peace and relaxation. A year later, Rolsky installed an additional feature adjacent to the pool-house shelter that includes several large, water-spouting Washington basalt stones of various shapes and heights. The following season, Rolsky established a dry riverbed next to the dining space that included a mixture of plants, Sienna sandstone boulders, and copper horsetail fountains. “It was as if a lightbulb went off,” he says. “We started looking for every opportunity on the property. I don’t think that they originally planned to do everything they ended up doing, but it was one of those jobs that kept evolving. Our goal was to create a number of Above left: A retractable individual spaces that awning from could stand on their Shades by Design provides poolside own temporarily and cover. work together as the Below left: Ready to dive in? He looked to a number of dwarf ornamental evergreens and other unusual varieties, as well as azaleas, rhododendrons, and six varieties of Japanese maples to create cozy, inviting spaces. “From the beginning, we knew that we wanted something calming, and Lowell really outdid himself,” Brett says. “From the winter to the spring, there’s always something blooming. It’s really neat to look out and see something come out in late fall. I often tell Lowell that my biggest problem in the yard is not knowing which 82

way to look.” In the front of the home, Rolsky used weathered limestone to blend in with the home’s exterior. “We really wanted to make a statement, and in order to do so, we looked for unique elements that would offer dimension to the landscape,” Rolsky says. One of those is a large, sculpted torch that greets visitors as they arrive. Made by a Colorado-based artist, the piece was found by Rolsky who offered to sell it to the Manns at cost, provided Rolsky could use it in the 2013 Indiana Flower & Patio Show. It was the kind of yard art that would not only serve as a conversation piece, but would also accent the limestone and plant material while tying everything together. “Sometimes you run into unique people who are artisans with whom you can partner, and it can make all the difference in the overall project,” Rolsky says.

Rolsky is ready to offer any help they may need to complete the space. “In Brett, we had a very enthusiastic customer who likes to work in his yard and takes a tremendous amount of pride in how it looks,” he says. “He’s a hands-on guy, and I have no doubt that this will be an experience they will always remember.” n IM HOME | 2014

of owning a salvage store, what has always excited Tim Harmon the most is not an elaborate stained-glass window or a charmingly paint-chipped cottage door. It’s a simple childhood toy—marbles. “Often they’re in the crawlspace under the house because they’ve dropped through a knothole in the floor,” he says. “I don’t consider it a successful salvage job until I find some marbles.” Every day, he carries a few marbles in his pocket, reminders of the people who once lived in the home whose doors, windows, hardware, and furniture are likely to end up for sale in his store, Tim & Julie’s Another Fine Mess. Collectively, salvage shops are giving new life to old homes’ and businesses’ bones and joints that otherwise would likely end up in a landfill. Full of intriguing vintage finds, these treasure-hunting hotspots are worthy stops on your next home-decor shopping trip.

Society of Salvage
rewired antiques and society of salvage
Jeremiah Goss, owner of Rewired Antiques
Jeremiah Goss, owner of Rewired Antiques, specializes in restoring vintage light fixtures, like the chandelier he fixed up for a couple renovating a Meridian-Kessler home that once belonged to Frank P. Fox, a driver in the first Indianapolis 500. Goss recently salvaged a set of glass prism pendant lights from the original Weir Cook Terminal at the Indianapolis International Airport. Most of his items are from the first half of the 20th century, found at flea markets or bought from other dealers. Occasionally, pieces are acquired from shoppers. “People come in, look around, and say, ‘I have some of these in the attic,’” he says. But Goss has more unconventional objects for sale, too—like an 1899 jail cell. He bought the two-man unit from the Indiana History Center after it was used in an exhibit on Prohibition. It originally sat in the Elmwood, Indiana, City Building. For Goss, prolonging the lives of things is a matter of respect. “If it can be fixed up, why not give it another life?” he says. He shares the near-eastside warehouse with sisters Sandra and Shelly Jarvis of Society of Salvage. The pair fill their space with vintage factory items, like workbenches, desks, and metal carts and lockers. Most bear signs of their former blue-collar lives: chips, scrapes, nicks, and dents. Some have found new homes in local restaurants Bluebeard, Rook, Thunderbird, and Eat + Drink.
Shelly appreciates that these items are built to last. “That’s why they’re still around,” she says, “even if in some cases there are layers of dirt, rust, grease, or grime. Underneath, there is something that is just so cool, it needs to be uncovered.” Amid the industrial finds are colorful block letters, piles of billiard balls, neatly organized shelves of Pyrex lab glass, and stacks of dishes by Homer Laughlin and Buffalo China.
But the quirkiest objects sit in a corner that looks like something out of a mad scientist’s 1950s-era laboratory. There’s a large beige X-ray machine once used by an Indianapolis optometrist that the sisters envision being reused as a light—once the radioactive component is disposed of properly. There are five working antique patient chairs, X-rays displayed on light boxes, surgical tools, and a curious-looking item called a synoptophore, a diagnostic device used on the eyes. Sandra has collected pieces her entire life. Most of them are from the 1920s through the 1960s. “Everybody knows I love this stuff,” she says. “They call me and say, ‘There’s an opportunity; are you interested?’ Yes, I am.” IM HOME | 2014

stained-glass pieces, or the pair of 8-foot-tall oak doors with strap hinges that were salvaged from a church in La Porte before it was torn down. Another elaborately detailed oak door boasts zipper carvings, a rare feature that involves cutting out tiny notches in the glass one at a time. “It definitely attests to the quality of the piece,” Bonnet says. “It’s probably the nicest single door we’ve ever had.” A soda fountain much like one you’d see in a retro drugstore is prime for being repurposed as a bar. It’s similar to a piece that Architectural Antiques sold to Tomlinson Tap Room at City Market. “They did a really good job of fixing it up and putting taps in it,” Bonnet says.
ture on East 10th Street that houses Tim & Julie’s Another Fine Mess looks every bit like the relics sold inside. It was once a hardware store, a fitting history for a shop full of parts and pieces that many customers seek out to restore their homes. Others are looking for a special piece—an antique light fixture or a mantel to place around a nonexistent fireplace. Still others have repurposing in mind. “They often want an old door to make a table or a desk out of,” Harmon says. “They buy odd pieces of wood or metal to make a lamp or to just hang on the wall as art. Doorknobs for coat hooks, hymnal holders from churches to hold reading material in the bathroom— millions of very creative ideas.” And to those ends, Harmon and business partner Julie Crow definitely have inventive types covered. Weathered doors are lined up to rifle through, and drawers are filled to the brim with hooks, screws, springs, and hinges. Hanging high on one wall is detailed white gingerbread trim salvaged from a farmhouse porch in Roachdale. Most prefer cutting off a section and using it inside as a decorative element, Crow says.
Near the front window is a behemoth of a stove, a mintgreen Oriole style with six burners and three ovens that once sat in a Meridian-Kessler mansion. Amid the many doorknobs is one from the HumeMansur building, Chase Tower’s predecessor that opened in 1911 and was torn down in 1980.
Tucked away behind a closed door is a stained-glass window from downtown’s Holy Angels Catholic Church. Before the building was demolished in 2012, Harmon and Crow salvaged eight windows, a baptismal font, pews, vestment cabinets, and even the clips that were attached to the backs of pews where ladies hung their handbags. “I spent an afternoon taking hundreds of [screws] off of these pieces,” Crow says. “It was so much fun. It really is a blast.” Despite his many great finds, though, there is one thing that’s eluded Harmon. “We never have found a can or a box with money in it.” ■

While the color blue has long been a mainstay in interior design, we’re now seeing many shades of blue layered together in a single space. For example, you might select a vibrant shade of turquoise in upholstery against a backdrop of rich navyblue walls with saturated cobalt or cheerful robin’s-egg blue accents. Simply tie the blues together using bright whites or soft creams for painted woodwork and a few of the accent fabrics.”

The next big thing in the landscape industry is not a plant, a fireplace, or a new kind of paver. It is the emphasis on quality in the design process, creating the basis for a quality outdoor-living space. We are seeing this movement out West, and it is slowly finding its way here. The results are seen in very livable outdoor-living spaces with classic materials and movements that will endure for decades.” ERIC J. BEARD, RLA

There are two major trends I see in remodeling. The first is the use of houzz.com by consumers to get design ideas and find professionals for their projects. More and more of our clients are using Houzz in some way. The second is the increasing demand for technology integration. Most major projects we build incorporate some type of control or monitoring via mobile devices for lighting, security, and audio/video.”

The Next Big Thing
[ LOCAL PROFESSIONALS REVEAL WHAT’S ON THEIR INDUSTRY R ADAR ] The reclaimed look will be huge in wood and in tile. Wider planks and lower-sheen finishes in wood will be strong. In tile, you will see more rectangular shapes in multiple sizes—not just 12-by-24. This allows for many design possibilities. Almost any new tile will have some form of gray in it; gray in wood and carpet is still strong this year. In carpeting, polypropylene is rivaling nylon and quickly becoming acceptable because of its wear and cleaning ability. Blends with silk are extremely beautiful in the luxury-carpet offerings.” KARLA SHONE

object of desire
Cabinet Selection MAJORING IN FURNITURE DESIGN at IUPUI’s Herron School of Art and Design seemed like a natural fit for Dave Freeman, since it blended his interests in art and engineering. “The major seemed fastidious, time-consuming, and frustrating, which put it right up my alley,” he says. During his senior year, he developed a love of making patterns, like the one featured on this maple-and-mahogany entertainment stand ($1,200). With the help of fellow Herron grad Matthew Osborn, Freeman created the ultra-thin patterned veneer (using a table saw jig he designed for a more precise result), and then sanded, lacquered, and assembled the 2-foot-tall by 4-footwide piece in about two weeks. Though just 23, Freeman has already displayed a cabinet at the 2012 International Woodworking Fair and was commissioned to construct benches for Dow AgroSciences. With an upcoming move into a new workshop and studio on East Washington Street, he plans to shift into woodworking full time. For now, works can be commissioned through Freeman’s website, daveintheshop.com. —Laura Kruty
