Selecting a lawyer, a cosmetic surgeon, or a high school for your son or daughter are decisions not to be taken lightly. And though they may not carry the same weight, things like buying a watch or deciding upon a restaurant for your anniversary dinner are choices you want to get right nonetheless. In this issue, our inaugural Faces of Indianapolis, you’ll find companies for each of those categories—and many more. We invite you to learn more about these businesses, their histories, and their products and services. Together, they’re helping to make Indianapolis and surrounding areas a better place to live, work, and play. As the saying goes, it’s not what you know, it’s who you know.

CUSTOM DESIGN & MANUFACTURING REIS-NICHOLS JEWELERS It takes several artisans, each with their own unique skill, to create a single piece of jewelry. It is a traditional art that dates back centuries, yet continues to evolve. Reis-Nichols Jewelers, family owned and operated in Indianapolis since 1919, is respected for having one of the most progressive design and manufacturing studios in the country. The faces—and, more importantly, the hands—behind the jewelry are reflections of the labor-intensive processes involved in creating or restoring small and intricate works of art. 2
FACES OF INDY | 2016
Having such a state-of-the-art facility enables you not only to design and create a piece of jewelry all your own, but also to have jewelry and watch repairs done onsite. “A piece of jewelry is oftentimes a person’s most sentimental and treasured item,” says BJ Nichols, president of Reis-Nichols Jewelers. “Knowing that their valuables are here onsite offers our customers tremendous peace of mind.” There is a story behind every piece of fine jewelry they create. “Our heart and soul goes into it,” BJ says. It’s a labor of love—and one the local artisans at Reis-Nichols Jewelers take very seriously. 3535 E. 86TH ST., INDIANAPOLIS | 255-4467 789 U.S. 31 NORTH, GREENWOOD | 883-4467 REISNICHOLS.COM

Since then, Moyer has nearly quadrupled his watch offerings at Moyer Fine Jewelers. Customers in need of a new watch—or those who simply want to add to their collection—have 15 quality brands and nearly 700 timepieces to browse, from sporty to dressy and styles in between. Budgets of all sizes can be accommodated, too. “There are maybe 75 to 100 stores in the country that carry the depth of watches we carry,” Moyer says. The store’s brands include Breitling, Bell & Ross, 10

Omega, Longines, Hublot, Chopard, Dior, Michele, Zodiac, Citizen, Frederique Constant, Carl F. Bucherer, Ralph Lauren, Victorinox Swiss Army, and Tag Heuer. Moyer is also the exclusive Indiana seller of Breitling for Bentley, whose sumptuous pieces are inspired by the equally luxurious British carmaker. Watch enthusiasts are familiar with Moyer’s impressive variety, but the store also takes care of its customers through knowledgeable employees— people love chatting with Bill O’Brien, “the watch guy”—and small repairs performed in house. Occasionally, Moyer will host watch events, where guests can shop a featured brand and sample hors d’oeuvres in a casual atmosphere. For some, watches are utilitarian. Others think of their timepiece as an essential part of their wardrobe. Either way, as the Face of Fine Watches, Moyer Fine Jewelers has the top-notch selection and well-informed staff to help you find a style you’ll relish for years. 14727 THATCHER LN., CARMEL 844-9003 | MOYERFINEJEWELERS.COM

ARCHITECTURAL HOME DESIGN GARY NANCE DESIGN, GARY NANCE, CEO Ever since I could hold a pencil in my hand I knew I wanted to design homes for a living. When I got my license, I drove everywhere I could, sat in my car, and sketched everything I laid my eyes upon. Growing up, people told me that I was crazy and would never accomplish my dream, which made me want it even more! I have been very fortunate to work with many talented people throughout my career. I never stop learning and discovering new ways of making someone’s dream home become a reality. I still have Architectural Digest magazines from the ’90s that I occasionally will flip through when I need to be inspired. Classic design never goes out of style. When I start to design a home, I like to look at it as a puzzle, seeing where every piece fits. I strive to create not only a great-looking home, but to make it functional as well. The family room is just as important as figuring out where you’re going to store the extra bed sheets, the paper towels, and the dog food. I never want a client to think, Well, I love how it looks, but it’s not livable. Being able to take pencil to paper to create a client’s vision of their dream is what I am lucky to do every day. 4631 LISBORN DR., CARMEL| 663-4793 | GARYNANCEDESIGN.COM 2016 | FACES OF INDY

GAMING & RACING CENTAUR GAMING, ROD RATCLIFF & JIM BROWN Over the last 20 years, Indiana’s agribusiness economy, which encompasses everything from farming and breeding operations to agricultural-related packaging and distribution, has grown significantly. However, one of the biggest contributors to that growth might surprise you—Indiana’s horse racing industry. Just a couple hours north of the hallowed horse racing grounds of Churchill Downs, you will find Centaur Gaming, a company that bet big on the combination of horse racing and casino gaming and helped deliver even bigger payoffs for the state of Indiana. The Indiana-owned and operated company, with its headquarters in Indianapolis, employs more than 2,000 Hoosiers through Hoosier Park Racing & Casino in Anderson, Indiana Grand Racing & Casino in Shelbyville, and three additional off-track betting locations throughout the state. In fact, both properties were recently named the area’s most popular attractions with Hoosier Park Racing & Casino and Indiana Grand Racing & Casino welcoming more than 6 million visits each year. Led by chairman and CEO Rod Ratcliff and president and COO Jim Brown, Centaur Gaming has been making good on its 20-year company mission of bringing the economic and entertainment benefits of horse racing and casino gaming to communities throughout Indiana. A recent study on the impact of Indiana’s horse racing industry found that in addition to being responsible for the employment of more than 10,000 Hoosiers, horse racing’s benefits extend to all 92 Indiana counties and amount to upwards of $1 billion annually. INNOVATIVE EDUCATION UNIVERSITY HIGH SCHOOL What if someone asked you to design your dream school? If you’re like the founders of University High School in Carmel, you’d throw out the rulebook, dream big, and build the best possible high school you could imagine. That’s exactly how University came to be. University High School is an independent, college preparatory school with 280 students in grades 9–12. It’s a school whose graduates have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, Broadway stars, filmmakers, and everything in between. Every student at University has a faculty mentor, and every senior is admitted to a good-fit college. The distinctive and innovative programs from the founding remain—mentoring, January Term, community meeting—but University continually changes, adapts, and improves to meet the needs of its students. University’s recent examples of innovative education are its best yet. In 2014, University introduced a one-of-akind Year of Service program that teaches students to value authentic, impactful community service over a mere collection of volunteer hours. In 2015, University reinvented its college counseling program to be more studentfocused and revamped its computer science curriculum to incorporate hands-on experience with the latest coding techniques. As the face of innovative education in Central Indiana, University High School continues to throw out the rulebook, dream big, and be the best possible high school. 2825 W. 116TH ST., CARMEL | 733-4475 | UNIVERSITYHIGHSCHOOL.ORG 30

BARREL AGED COCKTAILS SPOKE & STEELE In a city known for sports bars, speedways, and steakhouses, Spoke & Steele is one of Indy’s best-kept secrets, pioneering a bespoke program showcasing the craft behind barrel-aged cocktails. The concept of aging an entire cocktail in a barrel is not new; however, it is widely unknown and highly elevated in this format. With the resurgence of the craft-cocktail movement, there is no shortage of establishments to imbibe. Uniquely different and difficult to replicate, Spoke & Steele challenges its patrons’ palates with inventive adaptations of classic cocktails. Beverage Director Tyler Burns thoughtfully composes amazing cocktails and selects American oak barrels with various char
levels to create an undeniably great concoction over time. Aged for 6 to 8 weeks, allowing it to improve, the process introduces notes of vanilla, caramel, and smoke to soften the edges. For true enthusiasts and regular entertainers, try getting into the CraftShare program. Each month, a new cocktail that has been aged for program members is introduced and distributed into a personalized bottle that awaits them in the bar’s aging case. As an extension of CraftShare, custom-logoed barrels can be built for local businesses or social gatherings. Burns personally sits with guests, crafting their own unique cocktail that pleases their palate. This program is about creating a comfortable experience that expands a patron’s appreciation of bespoke cocktails and traditions—focusing on what’s in the barrel but also what’s outside the barrel to connect friends, co-workers, and family. 123 S. ADULT EDUCATION INDIANA WESLEYAN UNIVERSITY, DR. DAVID WRIGHT, PRESIDENT Indiana Wesleyan University is an evangelical Christian comprehensive university committed to developing students in character, scholarship and leadership. The University began offering degrees in 1920 on the residential campus in Marion, Indiana. Then in 1985, IWU launched an innovative program designed to serve the needs of working adults who had previously experienced limited access to higher education. Today, the 10,000 plus adult-student population from Indiana and locations around the country and around the world owe much of their opportunity to the pioneering work of Dr. David Wright. It was Dr. Wright who led the University’s bold entry into online learning in 1997 and continued to shape the regional campus
development strategy that helped IWU become the largest private university in Indiana. As an innovator in adult education, IWU has received national attention and is now ranked as “one of the best Master’s universities in the Midwest” by U.S. News & World Report. Dr. Wright’s service to the Wesleyan Church and commitment to Christian scholarship has helped ensure that this growth was established on the sure footing of the University’s commitment to Christ-centered higher education. As Dr. Wright describes the responsibility of serving as president, “It is a high honor, indeed a sacred trust, to accept the call to serve as President of my alma mater. There are many challenges facing college graduates in the 21st century and I believe with all of my heart that Christian higher education is ideally suited to help them attach their gifts to society’s greatest needs.” 4201 S. OLIVER WINERY, BILL OLIVER, PRESIDENT, & DENNIS DUNHAM, WINEMAKER Oliver Winery, Indiana’s pioneering winery, was founded in 1972 by Indiana University Law Professor, William Oliver. With a showplace winery and tasting room and nationally recognized wines, Oliver Winery has grown from a basement hobby to become one of the largest wineries in the eastern United States. “Our winemaking philosophy is to capture the flavor of fully ripe and delicious fruit,” says Bill Oliver, son of the founder and president of Oliver Winery. “Our winemaking is simple and natural, focusing on protecting flavors from excessive manipulation. Wine grape flavors are delicate. We know from experience that the less we process the wine, the better it tastes.” “We source grapes from across the country and our own Monroe County vineyard,” Oliver says. “Our success with our Creekbend Vineyard estate-grown wines has gotten people’s attention.” Creekbend wines are 100 percent grown at Oliver Winery’s Creekbend Vineyard, as Monroe County’s well-drained limestone soil and long, warm summers make the area ideally suited for growing wine grapes. Oliver Winery produces wine from famed California vineyards as well. From Pinot Noir to Sauvignon Blanc, Oliver has sourced fruit from many of the West Coast’s best wine-growing areas. “It has been a long process to establish relationships with the best grape growers,” Oliver says. “Establishing trust that we are very capable winemakers was essential. Many growers have told us our wines are among the best made from their grapes.” Oliver Winery is located on State Road 37 just a few miles north of Bloomington. PROGRESSIVE EDUCATION THE ORCHARD SCHOOL Teachers at The Orchard School are experts when it comes to engaging students and fostering a love of learning. Orchard’s rich history goes back more than 90 years, when nine Indianapolis women put into practice the philosophy of John Dewey. Dewey was rebuffing a system where kids were seen as empty vessels, ready to be filled by teachers who possessed all the knowledge. The nine women wanted children to be actively engaged in the learning process. Those insightful women founded The Orchard School in 1922. Since then, Orchard students have been persevering, creating, working with diverse groups of people, and becoming more actively involved in their own learning. Highly skilled teachers from preschool through eighth grade are masters at getting to know children and motivating each one to be successful. 615 W. 64TH ST., INDIANAPOLIS, IN 46260 | 317-251-9253 | ORCHARD.ORG 64

JUSTICE FOR THOSE IN NEED ROWE & HAMILTON Thirty-one years ago, a dream was birthed in the hearts of attorneys Tim Rowe and David Hamilton. It was rooted in the noble idea that the power of a law degree can be used to help bring justice to those in need and that the law must have compassion for the hurt and disadvantaged as they need an advocate to fight their battles with a caring heart. Tim Rowe and David Hamilton have carried this vision for three decades as trial lawyers helping the injured who have been devastated by the carelessness of others. Rowe and Hamilton is a personal-injury law firm that is dedicated to justice for all, regardless of their race or social status. This passion for justice motivated them to be leaders in their community, helping the underprivileged. GOVERNMENTAL LAW GREGORY F. HAHN, ESQ. Greg Hahn’s world centers on the value of relationships. “Every aspect of life comes down to relationships,” Hahn says. “Having a true interest in the person across from me and figuring out how I might be able to help him or her is what motivates me.” As both an attorney and a registered lobbyist, Hahn has more than 40 years of experience assisting businesses and municipalities in the issues vital to their growth. “Working with municipalities is particularly interesting as governmental entities impact all of us—from economic development, taxes and bonds to clean water and public safety. To listen to leaders in government talk about their goals and challenges, then to help leverage resources to move them toward success ultimately lifts the entire community.” Hahn has served in a number of political positions, including counsel and treasurer for the Marion County Democratic Central Committee. CLEAN. FAST. FRIENDLY. CREW CARWASH For nearly 70 years, Crew Carwash has been synonymous with delivering a vehicle that’s clean, dry, and shiny, while providing a customer experience that’s second to none. Crew began its quest to make customers smile in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in 1948 as Mike’s Minute Man and expanded to the Indianapolis area in 1985. Still family-owned and operated today, our crew holds fast to the same guiding principles of treating others the way you would want to be treated, established by our founders, Joe and Ed Dahm, who often remind us, “We’re really in the people business. We just happen to wash cars.” And, as it turns out, to do that well, we’re also in the business of hiring great people. While our wash associates and managers come from various backgrounds, many of them are students: dedicated high-schoolers, young adults working their way through college, or managers pursuing an MBA or graduate degree. We foster a culture of learners and leaders—and it’s the reason the question we’re most often asked is, “Where do you find your people?” To hire and retain the most talented team in the service industry, we provide a generous Education Assistance Program that is unique to Crew; nationally recognized, award-winning training programs; opportunities for advancement into management; and an industry-leading starting pay of $10 per hour for part-time associates. With 27 locations and growing, it truly is our people who make us shine. And it all starts with a necktie and a smile. THE FUTURE OF RADIO, NEXTRADIO APP JEFF SMULYAN & PAUL BRENNER Jeff Smulyan, CEO of Emmis Communications, and Paul Brenner, president of NextRadio, are changing the way people listen to live, local FM radio, allowing listeners to take radio out of the car and listen on their mobile phones. Smulyan and Brenner are doing this through the development of the NextRadio app, which provides consumers the chance to listen, view, and interact with FM radio. This is not a typical app. It is unique in that it works directly with the FM receiver inside smartphones (which all phones have) as long as that FM receiver has been activated by their wireless carrier. NextRadio got its first big break with Sprint in late 2013, when the carrier agreed to turn on the chip in their phones. Since then, other big carriers, like AT&T and T-Mobile, have also agreed. NextRadio makes radio portable and interactive and is an incredible tool in an emergency, providing consumers with critical updates if cell service goes down. “One of my favorite things to listen to in NextRadio is a live Colts game with no delay like streaming,” Smulyan says. “I am proud to be a part of something that I believe will have a lasting legacy on the radio industry.” The NextRadio app is a solution for the radio industry that puts the power of radio in the mobile phone—making radio portable so consumers can listen wherever they go. 40 MONUMENT CIRCLE, STE. 500, INDIANAPOLIS | NEXTRADIOAPP.COM 2016 | FACES OF INDY
