Wedding Planning q&a Local industry pros share their advice for a day you won’t soon forget
A
long with the excitement and anticipation, weddings come with a long slate of choices to make and details to account for. Sometimes, what you need to accomplish before your big day seems endless. Whether an engagement is a few years away or you’re in the thick of planning your nuptials, our experts from all angles of the wedding business offer their takes on topics like dresses, hairdos, and flowers. How can I ensure that I’ll absolutely love my wedding photos? Joel Cookston of Joel Cookston Photography says it’s important to know your wedding photographer. “You should already be in love with your chosen photographer’s images,” he says. “You’ve stalked their blog, which is the most important outlet for your photographer. Photographers show the images they like the best, and it is those images they want to shoot and create for future clients. If you want fun, quirky images, invest in a photographer who is fun and quirky. If you want glamour and fashion images, invest in a photographer who shares that style on his or her blog. “I always start with Q&As regarding their decor, their outfits, and the theme for their big day. “Give your photographer time. You’ll need to give me time to create those 28 INDIANA BRIDE | WINTER 2013

unique moments in your day. Uniqueness and creativity come from having freedom on this one amazing day.” How can I decide between a buffet and a traditional sit-down dinner? There are pros to both the buffet and the sit-down dinner, and deciding between the two can be difficult, says Katie Bates, bridal event and catering coordinator for Sahm’s. “A couple of things I would take into consideration when deciding would be the budget and the layout of the venue,” she says. “Fortunately, we have a large enough space to accommodate a buffet comfortably. If you have a large guest count, you want to be sure that the buffet is double-sided and/or have more than one buffet station. A sit-down dinner creates a different vibe for your reception. It’s very formal and traditional and costs a bit more than a buffet option. “Talk to your event coordinator at the venue and see what he or she would suggest for the space. Ask to be walked through the process. The flow is important to make the special day perfect.” How can I enjoy the day and not stress over the details so much? Hire a professional wedding coordinator, suggests Barbie Gurwitz, professional wedding planner at Signature Events by Barbie. “Don’t pawn off the execution of everything on an aunt, a friend, or a catering manager,” she says. “Hiring a wedding planner who knows what they are doing will give you peace of mind and let you and your guests enjoy the day. The goal of your wedding coordinator is providing you with the best experience possible. “An experienced wedding planner serves as the captain of your vendors, the keeper of your timeline, your Plan B decision-maker, your emergency-solver, and your personal assistant. Even if there are beautiful decor elements and gorgeous photos to capture it all, if you and your guests didn’t fully enjoy it, that’s what will be remembered.”

What tips can you share to make sure my hair looks its best all day? “When booking your trial appointment, try to book it in the morning WINTER 2013 | INDIANA BRIDE 29

or early afternoon,” says Megan McKinley, stylist with A Do Hair Design. “That way you can see how your hair holds up throughout the day. I would also suggest not fussing with your curls if you’re wearing your hair down. If the curls look too tight in the morning, they will fall a bit and look perfect in the evening.” Stylist Karla Sempsrott adds: “We’ve all heard that you should come to your updo appointment with second-day hair. This is mostly true, but check with your stylist at your trial appointment, and he or she will help you determine what condition your hair should be in on your wedding day. For some, this is freshly washed, or even third-day hair. If you’re wearing a veil, make sure your stylist shows a bridesmaid how to remove it and put it back in place. And always have a mini can of hairspray and some extra pins on hand.” In what ways can the groom’s tux reflect the overall look of the wedding? Grooms can match their accessories (shirt, vest, and tie) to the color of the bride’s wedding gown, says Kim
Hamather, owner of DC Designers Tux Shop. “He can pick a black, traditional fit, notch-lapel, two-button jacket; pleated pants; bowtie; cummerbund; and wingcollar pleated shirt for a classic feel, or give it an updated look with a plain-front, turn-down–collar shirt. Another option is a modern-fit jacket with flat-front pants, long tie and full-back vest for a more contemporary look. “The groom can also match or complement the full-back vest and ties for his groomsmen to the bridesmaids’ dresses. If the traditional black tuxedo does not fit the feel of the wedding, he may like light or dark gray, brown, tan, white, ivory, shadow-weave, or pinstripe tuxedos.” What are some alternatives to the traditional wedding cake? There are many alternatives to a traditional wedding cake, and it seems it’s a growing trend, says Mica Gosnell, owner and pastry chef at Confectioneiress Cupcakes & Sweets. “Dessert bars full of mini desserts are perfect for couples who want to offer lots
of options,” she says. “Popular choices for dessert bars are mini cupcakes, French macarons, sugar cookies, whoopie pies, oatmeal cream pies, and dessert shooters. “For those brides who still want to stick to cake but put a nontraditional spin on things, cupcakes are the way to go. You can get an assortment of flavors and still coordinate them to match your wedding colors. A popular display for cupcakes is to use a cupcake tower with a cake on the top or to use the cupcake displays as centerpieces on the tables. “Cake bars are a great way to still have cake but in a nontraditional way. Doing several small cakes set up with a cute display is definitely something that guests will remember. Plus, you don’t have to settle on just one cake design.” Is it a good idea to book rooms at two different venues for different types of guests? “In general, I would say no,” says Linda Poore, general manager of the Hilton Garden Inn in Carmel. “Most wedding guests enjoy being with each other. “I also think that you run the risk of
30 INDIANA BRIDE | WINTER 2013

hurting guests’ feelings if you use two different properties. While your intentions are good, they may misunderstand. Anyone who has worked on a guest list or seating chart knows how challenging it can be. Choosing two venues could further complicate matters. “Another serious consideration would be that two different properties will probably offer two different rates. So how would you tell one group that they were expected to book at the more expensive location? “At the Hilton Garden Inn Carmel, we attempt to locate all of our wedding guests together when assigning rooms. For the most part, they enjoy being near each other.” Where are some of the top honeymoon destinations? Not surprisingly, newlyweds love warm weather. LeAnn Decker, senior travel consultant with AAA Hoosier Motor Club, says Jamaica, St. Lucia, St. Thomas, and Aruba are popular Caribbean destinations. “Jamaica is very popular because of the value associated with it,” she says. “Jamaica is a very large all-inclusive destination, which appeals to honeymooners because they can pay one price and have all food and drinks included. “St. Lucia is a lot like Hawaii, but in the Caribbean. So if couples are looking for alternatives to long flights, this makes St. Lucia appealing. The destination offers beautiful Caribbean beaches along with a lot of active-adventure trips. St. Lucia tends to be little higher in price compared to other islands that offer all-inclusive. “Hawaii is also a very popular destination. There are beautiful beaches and coastline, history with Pearl Harbor, volcanoes, and national parks. “Cruises are great since you can see more than one destination. This gives people options to see various places and have their entertainment and meals taken care of.” What is a common mistake when it comes to wedding flowers, and how can I avoid that? Toomie Farris, AAF, AIFD, president and CEO of McNamara Florist, points out two general blunders. WINTER 2013 | INDIANA BRIDE 31

“The first is ‘too many cooks in the kitchen’—it is the bride’s day, and she needs to decide what she wants, the color, and the feeling. Choose your input carefully and trust your own taste and opinion. “The second thing I like to advise brides of is to share the vision of the wedding—classic, romantic, casual, formal, elegant, garden, contemporary, lush, minimal. Then let the professional help you create the feeling and experience you want for yourself and your guests on that special day. If you have a favorite flower or two, share that info first. Likewise, if you have a set budget or guidelines, share that information up front.” What are some emerging trends in engagement and wedding rings? Cole Hale, jewelry consultant for Reis-Nichols, offers up four main trends. • Vintage-style engagement rings: “We are often seeing couples requesting engagement rings with a vintage style,” he says. “Styles either dripping with diamonds or detail being added by filigree and antique finishes are some of the hottest trends in today’s market. We are seeing many couples requesting us to add this to current rings for an extra hint of beauty.” Cushion-cut diamonds: “Many cou• ples are requesting the cushion-cut diamond to be the center of attention.” Halo settings: “Adding smaller dia• monds that surround the center stone is a great way enhance the sparkle of the ring and add some style to rings that some would consider too simple,” Hale says. “By just adding a halo to a setting, it can drastically change the ring’s overall appearance.” Conflict-free diamonds: “The Forev• ermark diamond here at Reis-Nichols is responsibly sourced. Forevermark only deals with genuine and untreated diamonds of exceptional quality.” What advice can you give to ensure I get a hairstyle I truly love? “Bring in several picture of hairstyles that you do and do not like,” says Stephanie Reeder, bridal specialist with Salon 01. “This helps your stylist really see your taste. A picture of your

dress is also helpful in order to understand what look you are going for. Then your stylist can create a unique hairstyle just for you and your special day.” What questions should we ask a DJ before hiring him or her? “Finding a quality disc jockey and emcee is crucial to the success of your reception,” says James Gucinski, owner of Lakeside Entertainment. “You need to find a DJ who will take the time to understand the specific details you desire for your reception.” Here are a few questions that may help you while interviewing DJs: • If interviewing a company with multiple DJs, ask if you can meet the specific DJ that will be assigned to your wedding prior to making a decision. • This is your day. Ask if there are limits to the song selections you can request and if they will have each and every one of your requests available for your special day. Ask what the backup plan is in the • event an unforeseen accident happens to your DJ or his or her equipment. • Ask for references—and call them. What if the flowers I have my heart set on are not in season? It’s still possible to include your dream flowers even if they’re not in season—it’s just going to cost you. “We get flowers from all over the world,” says Chuck Eaglin, manager of Bella’s Blooms. “Most things are in season somewhere in the world, and we can get them, but you’re going to pay top dollar—sometimes from four to 10 times as much. It can be very expensive.” To lower your expenses, consider a flower that’s a similar color, size, and shape, he suggests. For example, when it opens, the garden rose is similar in appearance to a peony. What are some emerging trends in wedding dresses? “Coverage is a big one, whether it be straps, sleeves, or an addition of jackets—something that is going to cover the upper portion of a woman’s body,” says Valerie Densmore, owner of Blue House Bridal. “Also, exposed backs are a big trend. More and more brides real-
ize that their guests see a lot of the side and back of them during the ceremony, so why not give them something to look at? “As for accessories, I see a lot of brides coming back to a veil—and a cathedral at that. I love this because it really helps complete the look and frames a woman’s body beautifully. Softer head jewels with statement earrings are also big this year.” What are some “hidden” costs of venues I need to know about? When looking for a venue for your special event, make sure to examine the details of what you’re getting with the rental, advises Josh Vaught, director of special events at the Rathskeller. “Some places are going to include your basic serviceware and linens, and some places are going to charge you for all of those items on top of the room rental,” he says. “Specialty linens are usually going to be an additional cost, so if you want chair covers or pink linens, be ready to pay for them. Damage deposits are pretty standard but forgotten when factoring all of the costs. Cake-cutting is a service charge that people overlook as well. “My advice is to make sure you are detailed and ask lots of questions. Ask about any costs that are factored in but not talked about.” What advice can you share for choosing an engagement ring and wedding bands we’ll both love? “My advice would be to enjoy the process of getting engaged,” says Wendy Crawford, bridal department manager at Moyer Fine Jewelers. “Try not to get caught up in the technical side of things and remember the whole reason you are getting engaged.” Crawford recommends couples pick out rings sooner rather than later. “It should be done earlier in the engagement, rather than waiting until a month or so before the wedding. At that point, the couple has spent all its money on the dress, the DJ, food, and other wedding expenses. The only things you take away physically from that one-day celebration are your new husband/wife and your wedding rings. Everything else goes away. So it’s important to allocate enough in the budget for the bands you will wear each day for the rest of your life.” WINTER 2013 | INDIANA BRIDE 33

Maybe you’ve always dreamed of getting married in a certain season, envisioning fresh spring flowers for you and your bridesmaids; a nice summer breeze for an outdoor ceremony; red, gold, and orange leaves for your photos in autumn; or a winter wonderland during the holiday season. Whatever the time of year, start looking for and booking venues as soon as you can to lock in your date—once you know that, you can move forward on all the little details. Not sure where to start?
