Mr. Cao Goes To Washington

Thursday, January 3 at 9pm

What happens when the naiveté of a political rookie clashes with the realities of racial and partisan politics of the South and the ultra-partisan struggles in Washington, DC? This film is a character study of Congressman Joseph Cao, a Vietnamese-American Republican elected by surprise in a historically African-American Democratic district in New Orleans. Will Cao make it through his term with his integrity and idealism intact?

GREAT PERFORMANCES: PAUL SIMON’S GRACELAND JOURNEY Friday, January 4 at 9pm Paul Simon’s Graceland is considered one of the most significant recordings of its time. But why was it so controversial in 1986? In 2011, filmmaker Joe Berlinger accompanied Simon on his return to South Africa to reunite and perform with several of the musicians involved in the original album, capturing Simon’s unique homecoming as he reflects on the landmark event.

INDEPENDENT LENS: BEAUTY IS EMBARRASSING

Monday, January 21 at 10pm

Art-world darling Wayne White got his big break when he helped create the unhinged children’s show Pee-Wee’s Playhouse. His off-kilter style and self-deprecating sense of humor offer a peek into an imagination that refuses to grow up. This film chronicles the vaulted highs and the crushing lows of this artist as he struggles to find peace and balance between his work and his art.

HENRY FORD: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, January 29 at 9pm A fascinating portrait of a farm boy who rose from obscurity to become the most influential American innovator of the 20th century. Ford’s Model T automobile and his five-dollar-a-day wage ushered in the modern world, earning Ford reverence from millions of Americans.

SHAKESPEARE UNCOVERED Fridays, January 25 - February 8 at 9pm Tells the story behind the stories of Shakespeare’s greatest plays by combining history, biography, iconic performances, new analysis and the personal passion of its celebrated hosts — Ethan Hawke, Jeremy Irons, Derek Jacobi, Trevor Nunn, Joely Richardson and David Tennant. 1:00 Abolitionists: American Experience

A new 52-week incarnation of Fiesta! begins this month.

Elbio Barilari.

Fiesta! presents the hottest Latin-American music from the 16th to the 21st centuries, chosen by Uruguayan-born composer Elbio Barilari. A faculty member of the University of Illinois at Chicago, Barilari is at the helm for this trip through the hidden pleasures of Latino concert music, including the magical rhythms of Silvestre Revueltas and Heitor Villa-Lobos, and the power of symphonic tango. The series also shares little-known treasures from the LatinAmerican Baroque, and celebrates classical guitar through the music of Agustin Barrios, Antonio Lauro, and Leo Brouwer.

The Metropolitan Opera

Saturday, January 19, 1pm

Photo credit: Brigitte Lacombe/ Metropolitan Opera

Joyce DiDonato takes on the virtuosic bel canto role of the defiant Mary, Queen of Scots, in this Met premiere production of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda. Having staged last season’s Anna Bolena, director David McVicar turns to the second Joyce DiDonato as Maria Stuarda. opera in Donizetti’s trilogy of operas about Tudor-era queens, which explores regal characters at fateful moments of their lives.

“Donizetti’s three Tudor operas are very different in tone, mood, and musical content,” McVicar says. “Maria Stuarda is a different kind of opera than Anna Bolena, which we presented with a great deal of historical accuracy. Rather than reflecting history, it reflects the sweeping romantic nature of the story and of Donizetti’s music.” Maurizio Benini conducts a cast that includes Elza van den Heever as Mary’s rival, Queen Elizabeth I, Matthew Polenzani as the Earl of Leicester, Joshua Hopkins as Cecil, and Matthew Rose as Talbot.

The Phenomenon Lives On! Downton Abbey Season 3 Sundays, January 6 – February 17 at 9pm The Great War is over and the long-awaited engagement of Lady Mary and Matthew is on, but all is not tranquil at Downton Abbey as wrenching social changes, romantic intrigues, and personal crises grip the majestic English country estate for a third thrilling season. The all-star cast, including Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, returns and welcomes guest star Academy Award®-winner Shirley MacLaine. The press loved the second season, with USA Today marveling, “Lightning can strike twice.” The Hollywood Reporter called the series “one of the great melodramas of the modern television age.” And The Los Angeles Times styled it “big, beautifully acted, and romantic.” Seasons 1 & 2 have together won nine Primetime Emmy® Awards and a Golden Globe® for Best Mini-Series. Last season closed with the reluctant heir to Downton, Matthew Crawley, recovered from his war wounds and ready to tie the knot with the eldest of Lord and Lady Grantham’s daughters, Lady Mary. Meanwhile, Mary’s youngest sister, Sybil, has eloped to Ireland with the political-minded chauffeur, Branson, and is expecting a child.

A tantalizing glimpse ahead: Lovebird servants Anna and Bates face new ordeals in their starcrossed marriage. Downton’s impeccable butler, Carson, breaks in a new footman, who happens to be the nephew of the scheming lady’s maid O’Brien. Following Matthew and Mary’s engagement, Robert sticks to his duty to maintain Downton more firmly than ever—even as other great houses are crippled psychologically and financially in the wake of World War I. In this changing landscape nothing is assured, and could it be that even the war-weary Crawleys must fight a new battle to safeguard their beloved Downton?
