Scott Detrow named weekend host of ‘All Things Considered’ and ‘Consider This’
NPR has selected Scott Detrow to be the weekend host of All Things Considered, NPR’s flagship evening news magazine, and the new co-host of the daily news podcast Consider This. His first day on the air was June 24.
“I’m thrilled to be joining All Things Considered on the weekends. Over the years I’ve worked closely with the production team and the hosts on so many breaking news stories out of Washington—including a memorable time where I had to run to catch a campaign bus on live radio—and have always been impressed by how hard they work and how smart they are. I can’t wait to collaborate with the ATC team every day,” said Detrow. “With a presidential election already underway, there will be a lot of political news to cover. But I’m also really looking forward to branching out into other areas, including the cultural, musical, and sports news that listeners look for on the weekends.”
“With Scott at the helm of the show we’re going to be experimenting with the sound of the show and the way we produce it. We want to further integrate the Consider This podcast with the weekend show. We also look forward to Scott bringing his original enterprise reporting on a range of topics,” NPR’s VP of news programming Eric Marrapodi said. “His experience on the White House beat had him chasing the president around the country and the world to bring our audiences great reporting with good humor. He’ll bring that same energy and commitment to bringing home stories for All Things Considered audiences.”

Detrow has served as White House correspondent for NPR since 2020 and co-hosts the NPR Politics Podcast He’s hosted live special coverage for high-profile hearings, primary elections, impeachment trials, and other news events, and has guest-hosted NPR’s news magazines. He joined NPR in 2015, reported on the 2016 presidential election, then worked for two years as a congressional correspondent before shifting his focus back to the campaign trail, covering the Democratic side of the 2020 presidential campaign. Detrow helped launch the NPR Politics Podcast and then grow it into a daily news show and has hosted live episodes in front of packed audiences across the country. In 2021, for the 20th anniversary of 9/11, he produced an hour-long special in partnership with WITF about Flight 93 called Sacred Ground. In the past year he did a stint in Ukraine guest-hosting All Things Considered from Kyiv and Lviv and more recently secured a news-making exclusive interview for the show with Senator John Fetterman. His poise in breaking news situations and ability to bring the audience into the story and help them understand it will serve him well in this new role.

This easy-to-make granola blends the richness of pecans, the tartness of some sour cherries, and the sweetness of honey and maple.
Cherry Pecan Granola
8 c. old-fashioned rolled oats
1/2 c. maple syrup
1/2 c. sunflower oil (or another neutral-tasting oil)
2 generous squirts of honey
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. almonds, pecans (or other nuts), roughly chopped 3/4 c. chopped dried sour cherries (or another dried fruit such as cranberries or currants)
Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Mix the oats and nuts in a large roasting pan. In a large measuring cup, mix the oil, syrup, honey, and salt. Add spices, if using. Pour the mixture over the oats and nuts and toss until fully coated. Bake at 250 for 1 hour and 15 minutes, stirring every 20 minutes or so, to make sure it browns all over. Remove from oven when golden brown and add the dried fruit while it is still warm. Allow to cool completely before transferring to jars for storage.

The July 4th holiday falls on a Tuesday this year, and our weekday afternoon show Just You & Me will celebrate with a program featuring recently discovered broadcasts of Louis Armstrong’s late-1930s big band, plus music by Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Billie Holiday, Sonny Rollins, Nina Simone, Keith Jarrett, Wynton Marsalis, Mary Lou Williams, and other iconic American jazz artists.
Louis Armstrong’s big band years get a more in-depth look on Night Lights Friday, July 7, with commentary from Armstrong biographer and Grammywinning writer Ricky Riccardi. On July 14, Night Lights commemorates Bastille Day with a show about Black American jazz musicians in France after World War II. You can also take a trip back in time on July 21 to a notable mid-20th century jazz club with musician David Amram and author Dan Wakefield on “Making a New Kind of Scene: New York City’s Five Spot.” Recordings made at the club by artists such as Thelonious Monk are also included as part of the venue’s story.
Our Friday-evening vocal jazz program Afterglow honors the centennial of Johnny Hartman on July 7, exploring the baritone singer’s legendary album with saxophonist John Coltrane as well as lesser-known highlights of his career. The following week, host Mark Chilla catches us up on recent releases by modern-day performers, and then closes out the month with two episodes that examine the use of colors in popular songs.

Human Footprint
Wednesdays at 9pm, beginning July 5
Hosted by biologist and Princeton University professor Shane CampbellStaton, Ph.D., this part-science, part-travel series takes viewers from high-tech labs to sweltering street markets, from farms to restaurants, and from primeval forests to the back alleys of New York to explore the ways humans are transforming the planet—and what those transformations tell us about who we are as a species. Human Footprint is a visually stunning series set to an original score by legendary hip hop and jazz producer Adrian Younge.
In 4.5 billion years, the planet has never experienced anything like humans; we are no ordinary organism. Even our most basic needs— food, water, and shelter—place a staggering burden on the planet’s resources. Through unique interactions with an eclectic cast of characters—from scientists and historians to rat exterminators and dog dancing gurus—Shane discovers the complex motivations behind our impacts and unveils opportunities for a less lopsided coexistence.
“Hosting Human Footprint has been one of the greatest adventures of my life. I study how animals adapt to the changes we are making to the planet, but this journey really helped me to better understand the depth and breadth of our impact,” Shane said. “We are so intricately connected to the world around us in so many ways. I hope this series helps others to see and think about those connections in new ways.”
Each episode of Human Footprint is built on a foundation of science, but the biggest lessons are about human nature. The series is not a “doom and gloom” tale of human villainy. Instead, it is an honest reckoning with our vast footprint and our species’ singular history of transforming the planet. The series’ six episodes cover a wide range of topics: invasive species that are both deeply devastating to ecosystems and critical components of culture; how it came to pass that once-wild wolves now work, sleep, and dance (that’s right, dance) alongside us; how five species that met our needs have hitched a ride along with us to global domination; the way that modern cities are both deadly and delightful for their inhabitants; and the science and history behind a crop with an outsized impact on culture—cotton.
