This Month’s Highlights NOVA: Great Human Odyssey Wednesday, October 5 at 9pm Walk in the footsteps of our ancient ancestors as scientists trace the paths that led us out of Africa and around the world. Numbering no more than a few thousand, how did tiny groups of humans reach every corner of Earth? From snowy Siberia to remote Pacific islands, discover how humans survived and thrived in every corner of the planet.
Getting Ahead
Friday, October 7 at 9pm This documentary examines the hotly-debated nationwide movement to increase the minimum wage. The program follows Tavis Smiley as he travels to Northern California where the increases have been in place for at least a year, and offers a look at the real effect of higher wages on communities, businesses, and employees.
POV: From this Day Forward Monday, October 10 at 10pm Meet an American family coping with one of life’s most intimate transformations. When director Sharon Shattuck’s father came out as transgender, Sharon was in the awkward throes of middle school. As the Shattucks reunite to plan Sharon’s wedding, she seeks a deeper understanding of how her parents’ marriage, and their family, survived intact.
Nature: Super Hummingbirds Wednesday, October 12 at 8pm With high speed camerawork and new science, enter the fast-paced world of hummingbirds—who move faster than the eye can see. They fly backwards, upsidedown, and float in mid-air. See them mate, lay eggs, fight, and raise families. They are great athletes, tender mothers, brave in combat, and up for any challenge.

Masterpiece: The Durrells in Corfu Sundays, October 16 to November 19 at 8pm In 1935, an intrepid widow decamps from dreary England to a sun-drenched Greek island with her four unruly children ages 11 to 21. A tight budget and desperation drive the Durrells to sink their savings into boat fare to Corfu, where they hope to find a refuge more welcoming for their unconventional ways than the stuffy UK.
Hamilton’s America Friday, October 21 at 9pm
Experience the making of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway phenomenon Hamilton and the history behind it. PBS NewsHour Debates: A Special Report Vice Presidential Debate Tuesday, October 4 at 9pm Presidential Debate Sunday, October 9 at 9pm Wednesday, October 19 at 9pm
PBS continues its comprehensive, trusted coverage of the 2016 elections with these NewsHour special reports. Both programs feature 90 minutes of live coverage, followed by a half-hour of analysis, coanchored by Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff.
FRONTLINE: The Choice 2016 Thursday, October 20 at 9pm
Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump are two of the most polarizing presidential candidates in modern history. Now, FRONTLINE investigates what has shaped these two candidates, where they came from, how they lead, and why they want to take on one of the most difficult jobs imaginable. This two-hour biography draws on dozens of interviews from those who know the candidates best—friends and family, advisors and adversaries—as well as authors, journalists, and political insiders.
From their childhoods, to their college experiences, to their tumultuous careers, The Choice 2016 investigates formative moments in the lives of Donald Trump, who has challenged the establishment at every turn, and Hillary Clinton, who has become the first female presidential nominee. What emerges is a deeply reported narrative arc of both candidates’ lives, side by side, with powerful new insights at a moment when voters are being bombarded with conflicting partisan stories about each candidate. After watching The Choice 2016, no matter where your allegiance lies, you’ll come away with a new and richer understanding of the candidates.
