This Month’s Highlights Downton Abbey on Masterpiece Season 1 Marathon September 4 from 12pm to 8pm Revisit the beginning of one of PBS’ most beloved series, and learn about special gifts available to WTIU Members in this Downton Abbey Season 1 Marathon. Plump the cushions, pour the sherry, and settle into the world of the witty Dowager Countess and her “frenemy” Isobel, the Crawley sisters, and their below-stairs counterparts.

9/11 Inside the Pentagon Tuesday, September 6 at 8pm Most media coverage on the September 11th terrorist attacks focused on New York City and United Flight 93—leaving out details of the events that took place at the Pentagon, in which 184 people perished. This program presents new firsthand accounts of the attack that have gone untold, until now.

Indian Summers on Masterpiece Season 2 Premiere Starting Sunday, September 11 at 10pm It’s 1935 in Simla, an Indian retreat for British colonials set in the Himalayas. An assassination attempt on the Viceroy Lord Willingdon and the surprise arrival of Lord Hawthorne puts Ralph’s future in the balance. Meanwhile, Cynthia’s Royal Simla Club plays host to an important royal guest—the Maharaja Maritpur and his elegant and mysterious mistress Sirene.

The Contenders – 16 for ’16 Tuesday, September 13 at 8pm This eight-part series reveals the humanity, twists of fate, and surprising mistakes behind 16 of the most compelling and tumultuous presidential campaigns in modern history. Revisit the past 50 years of presidential election history to see how previous campaigns changed the status quo and are still influencing politics in unexpected ways.

Forces of Nature Wednesdays starting September 14 at 8pm Discover how forces of nature sustain life in this new four-part series. “Shape” (9/14) explains how shapes can help us understand forces that bind the universe. “Elements” (9/21) explores how chemical elements transformed barren rock into a living world. “Color” (9/28) shows how Earth’s colors are created and what they mean. “Motion” (10/4) describes how we experience the consequences of natural forces that keep Earth on the move.

Art in the Twenty-First Century Season Premiere Starts Friday, September 16 at 9pm Season 8 reveals how artists both draw inspiration from and influence their surroundings, while engaging communities from all over the world. The 16 artists—from Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Vancouver—share universal experiences through their life stories and creative works: resistance, pleasure, mortality, and the hope for a better tomorrow. Claire Danes host.

Poldark on Masterpiece Season 2 Premiere Starts Sunday, September 25 at 8pm Aidan Turner returns as the courageous Ross Poldark in nine gripping new episodes set against the breathtaking backdrop of 18th century Cornwall. Also back is co-star Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza, the miner’s daughter who is his equal in passion, wit, and daring. This popular romantic saga is based on the novels by Winston Graham.

Frontline – The Choice 2016 Tuesday, September 27 at 9pm FRONTLINE investigates the forces that have shaped the two presidential candidates—where they came from, how they lead, and why they want one of the hardest jobs on Earth. The film draws on dozens of interviews with friends and family, advisors and adversaries; as well as authors, journalists, and political insiders.

Chris Thile to Host A Prairie Home Companion Garrison Keillor has hosted A Prairie Home Companion for the final time. As Keillor becomes the show’s executive producer, it has been left to longtime APHC guest and master mandolinist Chris Thile to become the show’s second-ever emcee since it began in 1974. When the new season of APHC begins in October, Thile will take over as its new host. In the first year, we’ll broadcast 13 live Thilehosted shows, surrounded by a slate of best-of broadcasts from the Keillor years. Thile (pronounced THEE-lee) made his first APHC appearance in 1996. He intends to bring to the show guests with cross-generational appeal, ranging from singers James Taylor, Dolly Parton, and Beyoncé, to comedians Sarah Silverman and Dave Chappelle. Tune in Saturday evenings at 6 p.m. on WFIU and Sundays at 7 p.m. on WFIU2.

Lew Wallace Lives!

Indiana legend Lew Wallace is still wowing audiences more than a century after he wrote one of the bestselling books of all time, Ben-Hur. WTIU created a life-size cutout of Wallace when it recently aired the new documentary about his extraordinary life, Lew Wallace: Shiloh Soldier/Ben-Hur Bard. After the program’s broadcast, WTIU donated the cutout to the General Lew Wallace Study and Museum in Crawfordsville, where it now greets attendees and startles the museum’s director, Larry Paarlberg. “We have had people come in today who saw the documentary on WTIU in Columbus and again up by Fort Wayne,” Paarlberg wrote in an e-mail to the film’s producer, WTIU’s Ron Prickel.

Vienna Philharmonic Summer Night Concert 2016 Semyon Bychkov conducts the Vienna Philharmonic at Austria’s Imperial Schonbrunn Palace. (r 10/1 2am)

10:00 The Hispanic Heritage Awards The 29th annual awards ceremony recognizes accomplishments of Latino community and business leaders, physicians, scientists, educators, innovators, and entertainers. (r 10/1 3am)

“The General has been really good for our tours,” Paarlberg added. “I do hope I get used to seeing Lew standing there, as he keeps startling me! Don’t be surprised if you start seeing selfies with the old guy.”

Staff Pick of the Month Starting this month, we’re asking our staff members to share with you how they use WTIU Passport to enhance their viewing experience. Favorite Shows Austin City Limits, Mercy Street, Vicious, and many Masterpiece dramas. Bingeworthy The Great British Baking Show. Baked goods and competition reality TV are two of my shamelessly favorite programs to binge on.

Finding the Fix: Heroin’s Hold on the Heartland Thursday, September 29 at 8pm

It’s been called “Ground Zero”—the shared borders of southern Ohio, southern Indiana, and northern Kentucky—that has seen an unprecedented increase in drug overdose deaths and contractions of HIV and Hepatitis C. Between just 2013 and 2014, Indiana saw a 9.6 percent increase in drug overdoses. Indiana Governor Mike Pence called it “the scourge of drug abuse and addiction” that has affected “every community in Indiana, large and small.” This new WFIU/WTIU documentary explores the increasing epidemic of heroin and opioid abuse in the Midwest. The film shows the connection between the increase in heroin abuse and the increase in the prescription of opioid painkillers. From 1999 to 2014, sales of prescription opioids in the U.S. nearly quadrupled. Twelve states, including Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana, have more prescriptions for opioid painkillers than people.

of poignant interviews with professionals in law enforcement and medicine, among others.

As a physician in the film explains, wellintentioned doctors “handed out painkillers like candy.”

Finding the Fix: Heroin’s Hold on the Heartland was produced by WFIU/WTIU in partnership with a team from Northern Kentucky University, Indiana University, and Franklin College.

The documentary features graphic footage of addicts getting their fix and a wide array

“He says he’s been addicted for fifteen years off and on,” says one police officer. “I don’t tend to see addicts live that long.” “I know twenty-five families who have lost a child to a drug overdose,” laments a mother in the film.
