New Ernie Pyle Podcast Debuts This Month This month, WFIU will debut a new 13-episode podcast series created by writer/producer/actor Michael Brainard from the archives of the Ernie Pyle collection at the Lilly Library of Indiana University. Coproduced by Brainard and WTIU’s Russell McGee, The Ernie Pyle Experiment! chronicles Ernie Pyle’s pre-war work as a traveling columnist for the Scripps-Howard Newspaper syndicate. Ernie and his wife, Jerry, traveled America from 1935–1942, in quest of interesting stories for his column, and its never-ending deadline. The Ernie Pyle Experiment! explores how it was done. Each episode, through fact and fiction, examines the circumstances surrounding an actual Ernie Pyle column from this pre-WWII era. The body of which is made up from recently discovered wire recordings in the archives of the Smithsonian Institute that give us a view into their everyday lives on the road, and what led to the creation of the column. It culminates in a reading of Pyle’s actual column in question at the end of each installment. The podcast begins in the spring of 1937. Ernie Pyle (played by Brainard), and that girl who rides with him (played by actress Greta Lind), are laden with a never-ending obligation of work and travel. Ernie is a journalist with the burden of writing a thousand words a day, six days a week for the Scripps-Howard Newspaper chain. All of it from the road, by car, for a travel column called “The Hoosier Vagabond.” All of it is about America. Scripps-Howard is getting into the broadcasting game. They have decided to give Ernie a sound recording device to bring with him. They want to hear how he interviews people and potentially use the recordings for archival purposes, major story sources and even radio broadcast. Of course, Ernie stands against it. A compromise is made; Ernie will bring the device with him, but makes no promises he will ever use it. The recording device is Ernie’s albatross, but soon his wife, Jerry, takes to it. Ultimately, hundreds wire spools get filled with recordings of their everyday life together, not exactly what headquarters intended Ernie should be doing with it. The first two episodes of The Ernie Pyle Experiment! will be available at wfiu.org/erniepylepodcast or wherever you get your podcasts starting April 18. Subsequent episodes will be released May 9, May 30, June 20, July 11, and August 1. In addition, episodes of The Ernie Pyle Experiment! also will be aired on WFIU2 at 1pm on the podcast release days.

April 4/5– Kyle Long D.J. Kyle Long discovers, shares, and promotes original music that is often overlooked by the masses. When he’s not on the air or in the club spinning records, Long is a musical consultant for Eskenazi Health, where he is in charge of programming classical music performances for patients. Long is also a former musical curator for the Indianapolis Museum of Art, a columnist for NUVO, and an advocate for the growing but often marginalized immigrant population in Indianapolis. Woody Herman
Speaking of Woody Herman, there’s a new box set of his recordings little-heard since their original release in the 1940s and early ’50s, and jazz scholar Jeff Sultanof will join David Brent Johnson on Night Lights April 17 to talk about them. Other Night Lights shows in April explore the 1960s Blue Note recordings of pianist Herbie Hancock and the colorful life and music of jazz hipster Babs Gonzales. Afterglow host Mark Chilla takes THE deep dive into the Rodgers and Hart songbook this month, with three programs exploring the works of the songwriting team, including a look at their early songs, their late songs, and their “lost” songs—tunes the duo wrote that you might not be familiar with, unlike, say, “My Funny Valentine.” And on April 24, Mark welcomes popular-song expert Will Friedwald to the program to talk about the early years of the Nat King Cole Trio. Stay tuned for summer!

In light of the developing situation with COVID-19, we made the decision to postpone our Spring Membership Campaign that was originally scheduled for March 24-30. During this unsettling time, we are committed to providing freely available resources and information to help you stay up to date with the latest news about coronavirus disease and local updates as more health and safety measures are put into place. We appreciate your support as a member of WFIU, which is more important than ever now in helping us provide the essential service of keeping our community informed during this critical time. In the upcoming weeks, we will let you know about plans for the next membership campaign. We encourage you to support the next drive or give online at wfiu.org as we still have important fundraising goals to meet in order to bring you the news, music, and programming that you rely on. Thank you, John Bailey Station Operations Director

Giving Life Insurance to Charitable Causes Life insurance can be a tool with many purposes. When your children were young, you may have purchased a policy to provide them with financial protection in case something should happen to you or your spouse. Perhaps your circumstances have now changed. Many donors own whole life insurance policies they no longer need for family security. If so, consider one of the most satisfying uses for life insurance you no longer need—donating it to a cause dear to your heart, such as WFIU. When you choose to name a charitable organization as the policy owner and beneficiary, you may qualify for an income tax charitable deduction. Page 10 / April 2020

Recorded before a live audience at the Second Baptist Church in Bloomington, Indiana, Dr. Raymond Wise leads the Indiana University African American Choral Ensemble in a performance of sacred music spanning from African traditions to contemporary praise and worship music. Much of the Black experience has been defined and uplifted by the Black church, with gospel and religious music as a form of self-expression. Amen! Music of the Black Church speaks to the optimism and triumph embodied in this musical genre.
Here is an example: John purchased a whole life insurance policy to provide his family financial security in the event of his passing. John’s children are now successful young adults who are doing quite well. John decides to name the IU Foundation—for the benefit of WFIU—as owner and beneficiary of his whole life insurance policy to create a named endowment to support news on WFIU after he passes. John receives a charitable income tax deduction for doing so that can be carried forward for five years. To complete your future gift, contact your insurance company and request their beneficiary designation form. It is entirely separate from your will and does not require a lawyer. Not only is it an easy way to give, but its flexible—you can review and adjust beneficiary designations and percentages anytime. That being said, it is always wise to consult a trusted advisor. For
