Scott Tong Joins NPR and WBUR’s ‘Here & Now’ as Co-host Scott Tong will be the new co-host of NPR and WBUR’s Here & Now, the live midday news program that airs weekdays from 2 to 4 p.m. on WFIU2. Tong makes his onair debut on Monday, August 9. “I am thrilled and excited that Scott is joining our host lineup,” said Carline Watson, executive producer of Here & Now. “The depth of his journalism, his extensive reporting experience, and his willingness to be a guide for the listener will complete our already outstanding team comprised of Tonya Mosley and Robin Young.” Tong joins Here & Now after 16 years at Marketplace. He was the China bureau chief in Shanghai from 2006 until 2010. Since then, he’s been a senior correspondent and has reported from more than a dozen countries— from refugee camps in East Africa to shoe factories in eastern China. As part of Marketplace’s sustainability desk he has covered the global economy, energy, and the environment. He has done stories on everything from hacking and fracking, to climate and water, Hollywood in China, Huawei driverless cars, and tech spying. “As I child, I learned a Chinese fable about a frog in a well: deep underground, this critter only sees a tiny patch of blue above and assumes that’s the whole sky. Until of course the frog comes to the surface. Marketplace gave me the opportunity to explore the great skies of the world—in Nairobi, Caracas, Shanghai, Manila— and tell stories about them; for that I will always be thankful,” said Tong. “Now, I’m excited to join Robin, Tonya, and the WBUR/NPR team at Here & Now to tell timely stories with the program’s signature context and thoughtfulness.” A highly-regarded public speaker and author, Tong has appeared on PBS NewsHour, at the Aspen Ideas Festival, and at TEDxFoggyBottom. He’s been a guest host of the Make Me Smart podcast and KQED’s Forum. In 2017, he published A Village with My Name: A Family History of China’s Opening to the World—a critically-acclaimed narrative nonfiction account of China’s economic opening, told through the lives of five people across five generations in his own family. “The pandemic made crystal clear how essential it is to have a robust news magazine in the middle of the day, and Here & Now delivers,” said WBUR CEO Margaret Low. “We had an impressive roster of co-host candidates. Scott stood out for the range and depth of his editorial experience and for his original thinking, boundless curiosity, and creative spark. He will add a new dimension of thought-provoking stories and incisive reporting for our audience.” Front cover photo by Ian Wagreich/Ian Wagreich Photography

It’s tomato season in Indiana! And nothing tastes quite as good as an heirloom tomato. We recommend trying this refreshing salad from Chef Dave Tallent as a way to use some of those delicious heirloom varieties found at your local farmers’ market.

Wistful that lingering restrictions from the pandemic forced another cancellation of Jazz In July this summer? Never fear—we’re bringing you Swing In September instead! Every Friday evening in September WFIU and the IU Jacobs jazz studies department will present artists such as Rachel Caswell and the Midcoast Swing Orchestra at the Conrad Prebys Amphitheater on Indiana University’s Bloomington campus. Stay tuned for further details! Speaking of live jazz, tune into Just You & Me on Wednesday, August 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. for a double-helping of a rarelyheard Herbie Hancock concert from 1976, featuring both the first appearance of the VSOP Quintet (Miles Davis’ mid-1960s quintet with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet instead of Miles) and a lineup that combined personnel from Herbie’s storied 1970s Mwandishi and Headhunters bands. And with a return to school looming, check out Afterglow’s “Schoolhouse Jazz!” program on Friday, August 27 at 8 p.m., highlighting the jazz backgrounds of key musicians involved with the landmark 1970s television program Schoolhouse Rock. Other Afterglow shows this month highlight vocaljazz recordings that included pianist Bill Evans or guitarist Herb Ellis as sidemen, and a program exploring tributes to days of the week from the Great American Songbook. Night Lights, which follows Afterglow every Friday evening at 9 p.m., takes a trip back in time this month with musician David Amram and author Dan Wakefield as they recall a legendary 1950s jazz club. “Making a New Kind of Scene: New York City’s Five Spot” airs Friday, August 20. Other Night Lights programs include tributes to an iconic saxophonist (Charlie Parker) and an unsung one (Percy France), as well as an interview with Louis Armstrong biographer Ricky Riccardi about his latest book, documenting Armstrong in the big band era. You can also listen to previous Afterglow and Night Lights programs on our website at wfiu.org/afterglow and wfiu.org/nightlights.

Visit the historic Yoho General Store, a fixture in Greene County since 1934, renovated and restored in 2012. Meet the new generation of farmers, food growers, and craft brewers that champion the region’s locally-grown produce.

August is National Make-A-Will Month Eight little words: “Please remember WFIU in your will or trust.” Simple words that could make a huge difference to us. Every day, nonprofit organizations go to the stream of donations to ask for support. You can help WFIU build its own stream in the world of financial support that will enable us to do more—and to put at least a little less daily fundraising pressure on ourselves and on our audience. Consider remembering WFIU during National Make-AWill Month this August. Suggested wording for including WFIU in your estate plan is below:

“I give, devise, and bequeath to the Indiana University Foundation, a nonprofit Indiana corporation with principal offices in Bloomington, Indiana, the sum of $___ (or ___% of my estate) to be utilized for the benefit of WFIU Public Radio from Indiana University (or, state a specific purpose).” For more information, visit our website: indianapublicmedia.org/support/wills-and-bequests.php.
