Announcing the 5th annual NPR Student Podcast Challenge

The NPR Student Podcast Challenge is back for its fifth year! The contest is open to students in grades 5 through 12. Students, with the help of their teacher or adult leader, are invited to put together a podcast with their class or extracurricular group. Each podcast should be between 3 and 8 minutes long and must be submitted by a teacher or a student leader who’s a grown-up. The deadline for submissions is April 28, 2023.

This year, NPR has added a thematic award for the best podcast dealing with mental health. It is an issue that has been on the minds of many students, teachers, and families. Students are encouraged to explore whatever personal story or topic speaks to them.

NPR’s team of judges will review submissions and select a group of finalists. From there, one submission will be designated as the Grand Prize winner, and that individual or team will be featured on NPR’s Morning Edition or All Things Considered.

This opportunity has introduced more than 40,000 students to the world of audio storytelling and public radio. We have seen so many different topics covered in these entries relevant to student experiences and look forward to seeing new stories brought to life in this year’s challenge.

Straight out of the always-reliable Betty Crocker’s Picture Cook Book from 1950, these cookies have no shortage of ways to be customized. Fill them with red jelly for Valentine’s Day-themed treats.

Jazz Notes

Classic Betty Crocker Thumbprint Cookies

1/2 c. butter, softened

1/4 c. brown sugar, firmly packed 1 egg, divided 1 tsp. vanilla

1 c. flour

A pinch of salt

1 c. finely chopped pecans or walnuts Jam of your choice

• Preheat oven to 350°F. Cream butter and brown sugar until fluffy. Add egg yolk and vanilla. Set egg white aside in a small bowl.

• Combine flour and salt and add to the wet mixture and mix until just incorporated. Divide dough and roll into 1-inch balls.

• Beat egg white in a small bowl. Dip each cookie dough ball in the egg white and then into the nuts, pressing to adhere.

• Place each ball of dough about 2 inches apart and using the end of a spoon or your thumb, make an indentation in each cookie. Seal any cracks that form on the sides. Freeze 15-20 minutes (optional).

• Bake 16-18 minutes or until set. Remove from the oven and use the back of a 1/2 teaspoon to press the indents again if needed.

• Fill indents with jam. Cool completely.

Our weekday afternoon jazz program Just You & Me continues its long-running Valentine’s Day tradition this year, playing your special requests and dedications from all musical genres on Tuesday, February 14. Find out how to make your request in advance by tuning into Just You & Me from 3-5 p.m. the week before and watch WFIU’s social media feeds for further information.

On Thursday, February 23, trumpeter and Indiana jazz scene mainstay David Miller will stop by Just You & Me to discuss saxophonist Dexter Gordon and bandleader Sun Ra’s concert appearances in Bloomington in the late 1970s and early 1980s, as well as Rahsaan Roland Kirk’s final appearance here in 1977. We’ll feature recordings of the Gordon and Sun Ra performances as well. On a present-day concert note, our Monday, February 20 Just You & Me program will offer a preview of that evening’s Jazz at Lincoln Center “Songs We Love” show at the Indiana University Auditorium.

Finally, our Friday-evening programs

Afterglow and Night Lights offer several Black History tributes this month, including a portrait of iconic singer Nina Simone and a look at two of the first Hollywood films scored by Black composers. Tune into Afterglow and Night Lights Friday evenings at 8 and 9 respectively, or listen to the programs afterward on the shows’ websites at wfiu.org/afterglow and wfiu.org/nightlights

Wes Bound: The Genius of Wes Montgomery

Sunday, February 26 at 8pm • Also on

Discover the story of a legendary jazz guitarist and composer from Indiana. Wes Bound: The Genius of Wes Montgomery premieres on WTIU this month in time for the upcoming centennial of Montgomery’s birth.

Montgomery was born in Indianapolis on March 6, 1923, and rose from humble beginnings to become one of the greatest jazz guitarists of all time. This first full-length documentary of Wes Montgomery is told through the eyes of his youngest child, Robert Montgomery.

Wes Bound producer/director Kevin Finch and Robert Montgomery interviewed dozens of musicians, family members, and friends for the documentary, including platinum record-selling artist George Benson, rock and roll guitar icon Slash, 20-time Grammy winner Pat Metheny, Russell Malone, Mimi Fox, Grammy winner Lee Ritenour, Steely Dan co-founder Jeff “Skunk” Baxter, Grammy-winning rock guitarist Eric Johnson, second-generation Hampton family musician Pharez Whitted, bassist Larry Ridley (formerly of Indianapolis), Wes’s touring drummer Billy Hart, and others.

In addition to the interviews, the film also features the music of Wes and his famed brothers, bassist Monk Montgomery and pianist and vibraphone player Buddy Montgomery.

WFIU Giving Tuesday partnership gives back to our community

WFIU, the IU Credit Union, and Beacon partnered together on Giving Tuesday to help give back to the Bloomington community. For every contribution that WFIU received during our Giving Tuesday fundraising campaign, the IU Credit Union provided a pair of socks to the Shalom Center, Beacon’s day shelter in Bloomington. According to Rev. Forrest Gilmore, executive director of Beacon, socks are the single most requested item from the people Beacon serves. As result of our Giving Tuesday partnership, a total of 200 pairs of socks were delivered to Beacon on December 19, 2022.
