Calling All Unsigned Indiana Musicians: Enter the 2022 Tiny Desk Contest! The Tiny Desk Contest—NPR Music’s annual nationwide search for the next great undiscovered artist to play a Tiny Desk concert—is back for its eighth year. This year’s Tiny Desk Contest judges include Bob Boilen, host of NPR’s All Songs Considered and creator of the Tiny Desk series; Bobby Carter, Tiny Desk producer; Nate Chinen, jazz expert and editorial director at NPR member station WBGO in New Jersey; and Tiny Desk alums iLe, Michelle Zauner of Japanese Breakfast, Big K.R.I.T., and Raveena. Here’s how the Contest works: •

To enter, you’ll need to record a video of you performing one original song (and make sure your video includes a desk!) and upload your video to YouTube.

You can submit your entry on the Contest website, tinydeskcontest.npr.org, between now and March 14.

To be eligible to win, you must be an unsigned musician and at least 18 years old.

If you win, you’ll play your very own Tiny Desk concert at NPR’s HQ and headline the Tiny Desk Contest On The Road Tour.

For the first time, the Contest will be open to artists in Puerto Rico. And, after a two-year hiatus, NPR is planning the return of the Tiny Desk Contest On The Road Tour. At each stop, a handful of standout entrants will perform, plus the 2022 winner. NPR will feature many standout entries— not just the winner’s—on NPR Music’s social media, this blog, YouTube, and more. For more information, visit the Tiny Desk Contest website at tinydeskcontest.npr.org.

WFIU Sustainers: To start a sustaining membership or to replace the credit or debit card information you’re using for your ongoing monthly donation, please call (800) 662-3311.

This soup is perfect for a rainy spring day. It is rich and satisfying, but still light and fresh-tasting. Sorrel is a delicate leafy green with a distinctive lemony taste. Look for it at a local farmers market, grocery store, or perhaps it’s already growing in your garden!

Creamy Soup with French Sorrel 2 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 yellow onion, small dice

4 cups vegetable or chicken broth (heat first with parmesan rinds for added richness)

1 medium carrot, peeled and diced small

1 cup cream

1 stalk of celery, trimmed and diced small

2 1/2 cups French sorrel, washed, spun dry, and chopped

2 small potatoes, small dice

2 teaspoons fresh thyme, finely minced

1/3 cup basmati or jasmine rice

Salt and fresh ground pepper to taste

• Heat a large, heavy bottomed pan over medium heat. Add the butter and when melted, add the onions, carrots, and celery. Season with a teaspoon or more of salt and a few grinds of fresh pepper. • Cook the vegetables until tender then add the potatoes, rice, and vegetable stock. Bring the soup to a boil then reduce the heat to a simmer. • Cook until the rice and potatoes are tender, around 20 minutes. Once tender add the cream, sorrel, and fresh thyme. Heat the soup through, and when the sorrel is wilted, it is ready to serve. Taste and adjust the seasoning. If you make this ahead of time, hold off on adding the cream and the sorrel until shortly before serving. You don’t want the cream to separate, and you want the sorrel to be fresh and bright. This recipe was adapted from one by THIRSCHFELD found on Food 52.

March is Women’s History Month, and all of WFIU’s jazz programs will shine a spotlight on women jazz artists. Afterglow features feminist anthems from the Great American Songbook as well as tributes to songwriter Betty Comden and singer Natalie Cole, while Night Lights looks back at the women jazz musicians who performed on New York City’s famed 52nd Street and explores the career of trombonist and arranger Melba Liston. And you’ll always hear women jazz artists on our weekday afternoon program Just You & Me, no matter what month it is. WFIU’s spring fund drive also takes place this month, beginning on Tuesday, March 22. Your support is vital to what we do here! We’ll be offering saxophonist John Coltrane’s recently-unearthed live performance of his masterpiece A Love Supreme as a thank-you gift. There’ll still be music, even as we ask for contributions—the fund drive edition of Afterglow celebrates the arrival of spring and previews the upcoming Grammy Awards, while Night Lights follows with “Great Encounters,” highlighting jazz summits between Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker and Coleman Hawkins, and other meetings of great musical minds. Stay tuned for Jazz Appreciation Month, coming in April!

Even 1 Percent Matters

This month on Sanditon, Season 2 on Masterpiece Sundays at 9pm, beginning March 20

The fan-favorite drama inspired by Jane Austen’s final unfinished novel is back! After the first season’s finale left viewers hanging in suspense, the story continues with its high-spirited heroine, Charlotte Heywood, returning to the picturesque coastal resort of Sanditon and the companionship of her friend Georgiana Lambe. What adventures, scandals, intrigue, and above all else—romance—await Miss Heywood this season? Season 2 explores the classic quandary of how independent-minded young women can make their way in patriarchal Regency-era England. For some women in society, like Charlotte’s sister Alison, love and marriage are top of mind. But others, notably Charlotte and Georgiana, have mixed feelings about matrimony. The new season also introduces a number of alluring newcomers, including some military soldiers settling into town. During the Napoleonic Wars, young officers moved around the country with their troops, providing eligible women with dashing dance partners and potential matches. Sanditon features just such an enticing encampment of potential husbands and heartbreakers in the new season. Season 2 is filled with pointed social commentary as well, including a storyline about boycotting the sugar trade (led by the headstrong and impassioned Georgiana), which is based on real-life events of the time.

Would you like to extend your annual support of WFIU past your lifetime so the community can continue to enjoy the programs that you value on WFIU? You may think you don’t have enough to make any kind of impact, but that simply isn’t true. Your gift, no matter the size, can ensure a future for WFIU and influence the lives of those who rely on it. Here is one easy method. Giving through your insurance policy or retirement plan assets won’t affect your current income. For instance, you can include WFIU as partial beneficiary—by dividing up your assets in percentages. In the case of retirement plan assets, ask your retirement plan administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form. Contact your insurance company to ask how you can change beneficiaries in your life insurance policy. By putting aside a percentage of your assets—from 1 to 100 percent—you can leave a legacy with WFIU, while making sure you and your family have the security they may need in the future.
