Last month, we added To the Best of Our Knowledge to the WFIU2 lineup on Saturdays from 6 to 8 p.m. TTBOOK is a nationallysyndicated, Peabody award-winning radio show that is curious about everything and aims makes your world bigger. The program features conversations with novelists and poets, scientists and software engineers, journalists and historians, filmmakers and philosophers, artists and activists—anyone with a big idea and a passion to have a creative and engaging conversation about it. TTBOOK considers ideas big and small, conventional and dangerous, and marshals them into shows centered around a theme. A show’s theme sometimes centers on a big question, other times it will zero in on the small things that give us pause. A good theme is a conversation starter: is the Internet making us stupid? Can a computer truly be creative? Are humans innately good? What’s the best road trip you ever took? Once TTBOOK picks the theme, it digs in with interviews that explore the culture, the debate, the stories, the science and the actual sound of it all. To the Best of Our Knowledge is hosted by Anne Strainchamps. She co-founded the show, along with Steve Paulson and Jim Fleming, and has been a featured interviewer on the program for more than a decade. She has worked in public broadcasting at in ra St WAMU in Washington, DC, e n TTB OOK host An and at NPR. She has been a reporter, producer, news director, live talk show host, a food and wine columnist, and—in a former life—a chocolatier.

Every year as Thanksgiving approaches, fans ask NPR’s Susan Stamberg for her mother-in-law’s recipe for cranberry relish. Stamberg’s mother-in-law got the recipe from a 1959 New York Times clipping of Craig Claiborne’s recipe for cranberry relish. In 1993, Claiborne told Stamberg: “Susan, I am simply delighted. We have gotten more mileage, you and I, out of that recipe than almost anything I’ve printed.”

Mama Stamberg’s Cranberry Relish
Hoagy Carmichael
2 cups whole raw cranberries, washed 1 small onion 3/4 cup sour cream 1/2 cup sugar 2 T horseradish from a jar (red is a bit milder than white) • Grind the raw berries and onion together. (Stamberg says, “I use an oldfashioned meat grinder. I’m sure there’s a setting on the food processor that will give you a chunky grind—not a puree.”) • Add everything else and mix. • Put in a plastic container and freeze. • Several hours before serving, move it from the freezer to the refrigerator compartment to thaw. (“It should still have some icy slivers left.”) • The relish will be thick, creamy and shockingly pink. (“OK, Pepto-Bismol pink.”) • Makes 1 1/2 pints.

Bloomington-born songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, composer of “Stardust,” “Skylark,” and hundreds of other songs, endures as one of the state’s most iconic cultural figures. (There’s even a statue of him sitting at a piano, just a short walk from the WFIU/WTIU building.) Carmichael’s November 22 birthdate always falls close to Thanksgiving, and David Brent Johnson, host of our weekday afternoon program Just You & Me, will pay his annual Thanksgiving tribute to Carmichael’s music on Thursday, November 25. Afterglow host Mark Chilla gives us several chances to hear “Voices That Time Forgot” this month—talented and unique singers such as David Allyn and Peggy King who’ve been historically overshadowed by their better-known counterparts. On Friday, November 26, he’ll feature some recent releases from Jazzmeia Horn, Ledisi, and Tony Bennett (who has announced that his newest album will be his last). Night Lights, which follows Afterglow every Friday evening at 9, offers a portrait this month of pianist Elmo Hope, a highlyrespected compatriot of Thelonious Monk and Bud Powell, and revisits some of the patriotic broadcasts that Duke Ellington’s orchestra made for the U.S. Treasury Department in the summer of 1945. Other shows focus on Columbia Records’ star roster of jazz artists in the late 1970s, and jazz impresario Norman Granz’s 1950 coffeetable anthology The Jazz Scene.

This month on Singing Winds: The Life and Works of T.C. Steele Sunday, November 28 at 8pm Also on
Theodore Clement “T.C.” Steele was one of the most celebrated American Impressionist painters of his time. Singing Winds: The Life and Works of T.C. Steele looks at the life and works of the great Hoosier Impressionist—from his hardscrabble youth, to his journey through some of the major art centers of Europe, to his return to his native Indiana, where he captured the subtle beauty of the Midwestern landscapes. Born on a farm in tiny Gosport, Indiana, T.C. Steele’s father died when he was a young teen, which during the Civil War era would have meant a life of hard labor on the farm for most helping to support their families. But Steele’s journey was a most unusual one—from early art and music classes that his mother insisted he take to a surprising opportunity to travel to some of the world’s top art schools in Europe. Eventually Steele returned to his native Hoosier state and began a remarkable career in portrait painting, and, most famously, as one of the nation’s premier landscape painters at a time when the genre was only just beginning to take root across the United States. At the pinnacle of his career, Steele was celebrated as one of the leading plein air artists in America. Two-time Grammy Award winner Sylvia McNair narrates the documentary. An opera soprano, classical recitalist, and recording artist with more than 70 albums to her name, McNair’s work also includes several critically-acclaimed albums in the Broadway and cabaret genres. Production support for Singing Winds: The Life and Works of T.C. Steele comes from Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations and the WFIU/WTIU Documentary Programs Fund. Save the Date—Giving Tuesday 2021 Is Coming Giving Tuesday, celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, is a special day when we join together in the generous spirit of the season and support organizations making a real difference in our community. We hope WFIU will be one of the organizations you support on Tuesday, November 30. Every day, through trusted and thorough journalism, inspiring art and culture, and with an exceptional local and regional focus, WFIU follows through on our community-first commitment to use the power of public radio for the greater good. There is no better place for people from all walks of life to come together to listen deeply and learn openly than public radio. In a world that seems larger and more complex with each passing day, we can work together to keep our community strong, informed and connected. Our goal is to raise $25,000 in just 24 hours—it’ll be a team effort to get there, yet the impact your Giving Tuesday donation will have is great. There’s no substitute for the vital information, ideas, and inspiration WFIU offers you each day—and no substitute for the impact of listener support making it all possible. The road ahead as we prepare for 2022 is uncertain, but with your help on Giving Tuesday, we'll continue moving forward—delivering trusted news and information, powerful stories, and the joys of music to all. You are the “public” in public media. And your support this Giving Tuesday matters. Thank you!
