Brittany Luse named new host of ‘It’s Been a Minute’
NPR named Brittany Luse as the new host of It’s Been a Minute. Before joining the It’s Been a Minute team, Luse had been co-hosting the podcast For Colored Nerds
“Over the past five years, It’s Been a Minute has become a mainstay for listeners trying to make sense of an increasingly unpredictable cultural landscape,” said Luse. “I’m honored to join such a dedicated team as host and excited to learn and grow alongside It’s Been a Minute’s devoted and responsive listeners. I’ve spent the entirety of my eight-year hosting career helping audiences to connect the dots between culture and current events, and I look forward to continuing and expanding that work at my new home.”
Executive producer Veralyn Williams said, “The beauty of It’s Been a Minute over the years was getting to spend time with Sam Sanders, someone who asks deep questions about our culture and unavoidable news. So, finding someone like Brittany—who could step into It’s Been a Minute’s solid foundation, while also making us want to lean into her unique curiosities about everything from finding love on reality TV to the gender politics of fringe online communities—is what I can only describe as public radio magic. For the past eight years, I’ve listened to Brittany’s work on For Colored Nerds and on The Nod, and I’ve relied on her wit, brilliance, and charm to help me make sense of an increasingly bizarre pop cultural landscape. And now, I am so excited we get to hear her every week on an NPR staple.”
“Brittany is one of the most exciting—and essential— voices in pop culture podcasting,” said VP of programming and new content development Yolanda Sangweni. “She brings deep curiosity, empathy, and joy to the mic and to her storytelling. We are beyond thrilled to be re-imagining It’s Been a Minute with Brittany at the helm.”

This recipe comes from former WFIU/WTIU senior news editor Barbara Brosher. She loves frittatas because they come together quickly, are full of protein, and reheat well. If you’re into meal prepping, this a great thing to make ahead of time for weekday breakfasts.

Jazz Notes
Sweet Potato, Chorizo, and Manchego Frittata
2 T. olive oil, divided
1/2 lb. chorizo sausage
1 clove garlic, minced
1 large sweet potato, spiralized
8 eggs, beaten
• Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.
1 tsp. cumin
1 tsp. kosher salt
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2 cup Manchego cheese, grated
1 avocado, sliced thinly
• Place 1 T. of oil in a 10-inch cast iron skillet and heat over medium-high heat. Add chorizo to the pan and use a spoon to break it up into small crumbles. Cook until browned and slightly crispy, about 7 minutes. Place cooked chorizo on a paper towel-lined plate and carefully wipe skillet clean.
• Return the skillet to medium-high heat and add another 1 T. of oil. Add garlic to the skillet and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Add sweet potato to the pan, stirring frequently to prevent sticking. Cook until just tender, about 10 minutes.
• Spoon chorizo back into the skillet, distributing as evenly as possible.
• Stir cumin, salt, and pepper into the beaten eggs, then pour egg mixture evenly over the sweet potatoes and chorizo. Sprinkle grated cheese over the top of the frittata. Cook over medium-high heat until the edges of the frittata are just set, about two minutes.
• Carefully place the frittata in the oven and bake until the middle is set and the edges are just starting to brown, about 10 minutes.
• Slice frittata into 8 pieces and top each slice with avocado.

Hoagy Carmichael
Around these parts, late November brings two holidays to celebrate—Thanksgiving, of course, but also the birthday of songwriter and Bloomington native Hoagy Carmichael. On Thursday, November 24, David Brent Johnson will offer up his annual Hoagy tribute on our weekday afternoon jazz show Just You & Me, playing recordings of Hoagy’s music by past and present jazz masters, including Hoagy himself. The following evening, it’s a Hoagy double feature as Mark Chilla explores the Carmichael songbook on Afterglow, while Night Lights follows at 9 with a salute to Hoagy’s years in Hollywood, with commentary from Carmichael biographer Richard Sudhalter and former WFIU jazz host Dick Bishop.
Other Afterglow programs this month spotlight bandleader Count Basie’s collaborations with singers such as Billie Holiday and Joe Williams, the cool jazz vocals of Chris Connor, and various jazz interpretations of songwriter Paul Simon’s work. Night Lights brings us shows about bassist Charles Mingus and drummer Max Roach’s 1950s DIY label Debut, the innovative swing-era arranger Eddie Sauter, and the year in jazz for 1962.
As always, you can hear new releases, classic jazz, Indiana artists, and live recordings (as well as your jazz requests) on Just You & Me, Mondays through Thursdays from 3-5 p.m. Stay tuned for the Christmas season, coming up next!

Tutankhamun: Allies & Enemies
Wednesday, November 23 at 8pm
Commemorate the 100th anniversary of the opening of King Tut’s tomb by exploring the mysteries of his life and burial in a new twohour documentary.
Produced and shot on location by an all-Egyptian crew led by filmmaker and executive producer Hossam Aboul-Magd, Tutankhamun: Allies & Enemies goes beyond examining Tut’s tomb and treasures. The film shares the Egyptian pharaoh’s story from his point of view and unpacks the short-lived human existence of the “Boy King.” Lead archaeologist Dr. Yasmin El Shazly and photographer Mahmoud Rashad explore Egypt and the Americas, meeting with historians, archaeologists, and scientists to inspect historical inconsistencies and delve into secrets surrounding Tut’s childhood and family.
Dr. El Shazly said she explored Tutankhamun’s life and legacy not only because she is an archaeologist but also “as an Egyptian who wants to understand the history of my magnificent civilization. King Tut is not the golden mask. Tut was a human being just like anyone else. He was probably less fortunate than many.”
Using drone footage and computed tomography science (CT scans), Tutankhamun: Allies & Enemies takes a closer look at King Tut’s burial. The Egyptian team led by Dr. El Shazly gives viewers special access to newly discovered tombs that shed light on new theories about the politics and intrigue of this dramatic period of seismic change in Egyptian history. Journeying across Egypt from Cairo to Luxor, the film provides an in-depth exploration pursuing answers about King Tut, the powers and people that impacted his life and death, and the legacy his reign left behind.

Save the Date—Giving Tuesday 2022 Is Coming
Giving Tuesday, celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, is a special day when we join together in the generous spirit of the season and support organizations making a real difference in our community.
Please consider WFIU as one of the organizations you will support on Tuesday, November 29. Every day, through trusted and thorough journalism, inspiring art and culture, and with an exceptional local and regional focus, WFIU follows through on our community-first commitment to use the power of public radio for the greater good. There is no better place for people from all walks of life to come together to listen deeply and learn openly than public radio.
In a world that seems larger and more complex with each passing day, we can work together to keep our community strong, informed, and connected. Our goal is to raise $25,000 in just 24 hours—it’ll be a team effort to get there, yet the impact your Giving Tuesday donation will have is great.
And there’s a special reason to get involved: For every donation made to WFIU on Giving Tuesday, our partners at the IU Credit Union will provide a pair of warm winter socks to the Shalom Center, Beacon’s day shelter in Bloomington. Increase the amount of your monthly investment, renew your membership, or make a special year-end gift in support of WFIU’s public service mission for southern Indiana—and you’ll help someone in need at the same time.
We know there are many great causes to support, and we’re so grateful that you see the benefit of trusted journalism and cultural programs that strengthen our Hoosier communities. It takes all of us working together to do what we do. Thank you!
