Hey WFIU jazz listeners—don’t ghost us this October! We’ll be celebrating Halloween on our weekday afternoon program Just You & Me on Monday, October 31, with music from a wide variety of jazz artists. We’ll also take requests for this broadcast, so send your most haunting seasonal favorites to host David Brent Johnson at johnsond@iu.edu, and he’ll do his best to work them into the mix.

Our Friday-evening vocal-jazz program Afterglow pays tribute this month to recently departed producer Creed Taylor and the recordings he made with singers such as Astrud Gilberto and George Benson. Other Afterglow programs highlight one-hit wonders of the Great American Songbook and the unsung, brief career of vocalist Beverly Kenney.

3 T. vegetable oil

Night Lights, our historical classic-jazz show that follows Afterglow at 9 on Friday evenings, shines a centennial spotlight this month on saxophonist Illinois Jacquet (who made his initial mark with his solo on Lionel Hampton’s 1940s hit “Flying Home”) and arranger-composer Neal Hefti, who in addition to his work with the big bands of Woody Herman and Count Basie, wrote the theme for the 1960s Batman TV show and music for the movie The Odd Couple Other programs focus on the first concerts by American bebop artists in late 1940s Europe, jazz on the Columbia label in the late 1970s, and hardbop jazz on Indianafounded Vee Jay Records in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

• Warm each tortilla and add filling, cheese, and other toppings.

Jazz Notes

• Add the grated sweet potatoes, oregano, chili powder, cumin, and cayenne, and cook, covered, for about 10 minutes, stirring frequently to prevent sticking.

The documentary series chronicles the vast social networks and organizations created by and for Black people beyond the reach of the “White gaze.” Making Black America recounts the establishment of the Prince Hall Masons in 1775 through the formation of all-Black towns and business districts, historically Black colleges and universities, destinations for leisure, and the social media phenomenon of Black Twitter. Gates sits with noted scholars, politicians, cultural leaders, and old friends including Charles M. Blow (journalist and commentator), Angela Davis (political activist, scholar, and author), André Holland (actor), Fab 5 Freddie (hip-hop pioneer and visual artist), Jason King (chair of the Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music), and Killer Mike (rapper and activist) to discuss this world behind the color line and what it looks like today.
