Join Us for Swing in September! The popular Jazz in July concert series is temporarily moving to the fall this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the partnership of WFIU and the Department of Jazz Studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Swing in September will continue the Jazz in July tradition of featuring a variety of musical acts from swing bands to jazz vocalists and more! Four free, family-friendly concerts will be held every Friday in September at 6:30 p.m. in Dunn Meadow on the Indiana University campus. In the event of rain, the concerts will be moved indoors to Recital Hall. The concert series kicks off on Friday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m. with the Midcoast Swing Orchestra, followed by Organism on September 10, Rachel Caswell on September 17, and the IU Jazz Faculty on September 24. The concerts will be emceed by WFIU hosts Mark Chilla, David Brent Johnson, and William Morris. Swing in September is made possible with support from presenting partner Greene & Schultz Trial Lawyers and supporting partner IU Credit Union Investment Services. For more information, visit wfiu.org/swinginseptember.

About the Artists: The Midcoast Swing Orchestra, founded by Brent Wallarab and Mark Buselli in 1999, specializes in “authentic” swing music from the 1930s and ’40s. Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Jimmy Lunceford, Mary Lou Williams, and Erskine Hawkins make up the inspiration behind this dynamic 10-piece group. The Midcoast Swing Orchestra was a featured band every Tuesday night at Indianapolis’ Jazz Kitchen for 12 years, and at Cincinnati’s Midwest Swing Festival. They performed for over 10,000 people at Conner Prairie and more than 6,000 students through their educational outreach program. Organism is a new quartet that explores the great sound, repertoire, and tradition of hard bop and organ jazz. The band channels members’ diverse backgrounds into a shared passion for the music. Organism members include trumpet player and band leader Pat Harbison, Professor of Jazz Studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; Meghan Pund, clarinetist and saxophonist; Steve Snyder, Director of Jazz Studies at DePauw University; and Sean Dobbins, Associate Professor of Jazz Studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. Jazz vocalist Rachel Caswell is known for her improvisational prowess, her pinpoint accuracy of pitch and rhythm, and her depth of delivery and interpretation of popular song. Her most recent recording, We’re All in the Dance (2018), features some of New York’s top performers including Dave Stryker, Fabian Almazan, Linda May Han Oh, Johnathan Blake, and Sara Caswell. The IU Jazz Faculty at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music is a group of nationally and internationally recognized musicians. Individually, they have participated in numerous Grammy-nominated and Grammy-winning albums and have performed or recorded with jazz icons such as Dr. Lonnie Smith, the Count Basie Orchestra, Benny Golson, Chris Potter, and Kurt Rosenwinkel, among others. Outside of the jazz world, they have worked with artists such as Santana, Earth, Wind & Fire, Kirk Franklin, John Legend, Lupe Fiasco, and more.

The idea for this recipe came to Barbara Brosher (former WFIU/WTIU Senior News Editor) in a dream. Inspired by the flavors of a baked brie she had made, she dreamed of a galette topped with sweet cherries, brown sugar, rosemary, and a dollop of whipped goat cheese. Enjoy the results of this sweet and savory dream!

Rosemary Cherry Galette with Whipped Honey Goat Cheese 1 pie crust, rolled out to 12 inches

Pinch of salt

3 1/2 cups sweet cherries, pitted and halved

2 teaspoons fresh rosemary

1/3 cup plus 1/2 tablespoon light brown sugar, packed

2 tablespoons half and half, divided

Juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1 tablespoon)

2 tablespoons honey

1 egg, beaten 4 ounces of goat cheese

2 teaspoons fresh rosemary • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. • In a large bowl, combine cherries and 1/3 cup brown sugar. Let mixture stand at room temperature for 10 minutes. After cherry mixture is done resting, stir in lemon juice, salt, and rosemary. Set aside. • Carefully place pie crust on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Pour cherry mixture into the middle of the crust, leaving about two inches of crust around the perimeter. Use your hands to gently shift the cherry mixture to ensure it's evenly distributed. • Carefully fold the crust over the filling in large sections, allowing each fold to overlap. • Whisk together egg and 1 tablespoon half and half to create an egg wash. Carefully brush the egg wash all over the top of the crust. Sprinkle remaining 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar all over the top of the galette. • Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until crust is golden brown and cherry filling is bubbling. Allow galette to cool on a wire rack for at least 10 minutes before serving. • While galette cools, make the goat cheese topping. Using an electric mixer at medium speed, beat goat cheese, honey, and remaining 1 tablespoon of half and half in a large bowl until smooth and fluffy. Top each piece of warm or room temperature galette with a dollop of whipped goat cheese.

Live jazz is here again! The pandemic forced cancellation of our annual Jazz In July concert series last year and postponement this year, but we are forging ahead with an autumn version of our popular summer event, calling it Swing in September. Featured artists will include the Midcoast Swing Orchestra, which plays classic bigband music; a new group, Organism, that focuses on the 1970s hardbop compositions of pianist Horace Silver; vocalist Rachel Caswell; and the IU Jazz Faculty, comprised of some of the top jazz musicians in the state. For more information, check out our website: wfiu.org/swinginseptember. September also brings our fall fund drive, starting on Tuesday, September 21. We’ll be offering two exciting new jazz releases as thank-you gifts: In Harmony, a collection of live duets featuring trumpeter Roy Hargrove and pianist Mulgrew Miller, and Nina Simone: The Montreux Years, an anthology of the iconic singer’s performances at the Montreux jazz festival. Even though it’s fund drive, we’ll still be playing plenty of music, including selections from our jazz thank-you gifts, and all of the other fare that you normally tune in for during Afterglow, The Soul Kitchen, Just You & Me, and Night Lights. Your support makes these programs and everything else that you enjoy on WFIU possible. Thank you for listening, thank you for pledging, and thank you for being a part of this public radio community and this cultural home.

Earth Eats airs Saturdays at 7 a.m. and Sundays at 1 p.m. on WFIU, and is also available wherever you get your podcasts.

This month on Muhammad Ali

Sunday, September 19 to Wednesday, September 22 at 8pm Ken Burns’ new documentary on Muhammad Ali follows the life of the three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, and power in the ring, and his charm, wit, and outspokenness outside of it. At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation. Drawing from an extraordinary trove of archival footage and photographs, contemporary music, and the insights and memories of eyewitnesses—including family and friends, journalists, boxers, and historians, among others—Burns, along with writers and co-directors Sarah Burns and David McMahon, have created a sweeping portrait of an American icon. The series details the story of the athlete who called himself—and was considered by many to be—“the greatest of all time” and competed in some of the most dramatic and widely viewed sporting events ever, including “The Fight of the Century” and “The Thrilla in Manila,” both against his great rival Joe Frazier, and “The Rumble in the Jungle,” in which he defeated George Foreman to regain the heavyweight title that was stripped from him seven years earlier. Muhammad Ali creates a complex portrait of man with many contradictions in his life. Despite his competitive reputation and ruthless athleticism in the ring, he went on to become a symbol for peace and pacifism. Though committed to a faith that expected obedience and dignified conduct, he was notoriously unfaithful to his wives, at times publicly flaunting his affairs. Ali was a clever showman with an unparalleled genius for promotion and turn of phrase, who occasionally allowed his partners and friends to take advantage of him. He endlessly trumpeted his own greatness as a boxer, but anonymously donated to save a Jewish old age home, made surprise visits to pediatric hospitals, and signed autographs for every last fan.

What have you accomplished by contributing to WFIU? For starters, you’ve helped produce the reliable, fact-checked reporting offered every weekday on Morning Edition and All Things Considered … the thoughtful conversations on Fresh Air, 1A, All IN, and Noon Edition … and the rich storytelling contained within This American Life, Radiolab, and The Moth. You’ve empowered WFIU to be guided by our mission of public service—to deliver facts and context, to bridge cultural gaps, to promote shared values, and to connect Indiana with the world. You’ve helped ensure that WFIU stays free and independent, unswayed by advertisers, shareholders, or a drive for ratings. Also, you’ve opened the door for everyone to a joyful musical oasis, a landscape of peace and harmony, a refuge of comfort and calm at a time when the restorative power of music is so vital. You’ve strengthened the place of classical and jazz music in our community—for local musicians and music venues and students and teachers, and inside the homes of thousands of listeners. And you share the inspired joy and pleasure that music offers to everyone. Your generous support means that everyone here has free access to trusted news and information, smart conversations, and the inspiration of timeless arts and culture. This period of our history has pushed us to find new ways to reconnect, and to reimagine what’s possible ahead. In challenging and ever-changing times, it’s essential for WFIU to remain strong for you and everyone who relies on this station. Our fall on-air membership campaign, beginning September 21, is the perfect time to step up. Please consider making a renewal, additional, or first-time gift in support of WFIU’s public service mission for southern Indiana. Your contribution, combined with those of 4,000 gifts from your neighbors across the area, will help ensure WFIU can continue to inform and inspire everyone who cares to listen.
