THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS Call the Midwife Begins Sunday, October 3 at 8pm In the season 10 premiere, it’s 1966 and a testing time for the midwives. But there’s excitement, too, as the women’s rights movement intensifies. Interesting challenges lie ahead for Nonnatus House, as well as great celebrations when England wins the World Cup.

POV – Fruits of Labor Monday, October 4 at 10pm Ashley is a Mexican-American high school senior who dreams of graduating and going to college, but when ICE raids in her community threaten to separate her family, she is forced to become their primary breadwinner. While most of her friends are thinking about prom and graduation, Ashley finds herself working days in the strawberry fields and the night shift at a processing plant, with little time left for sleep or studies.

Great Performances at the Met – Three Divas at Versailles Friday, October 8 at 10pm Enjoy soprano Ailyn Pérez (a graduate of the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music), soprano Nadine Sierra, and mezzosoprano Isabel Leonard as they join forces at one of Europe’s cultural landmarks to perform favorite arias including “Voi che sapete” from Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro and more.

Independent Lens – Cured Monday, October 11 at 10pm When doctors classified homosexuality as a mental illness to be “cured,” they employed cruel treatments like electroshock and lobotomies. LGBTQ+ activists and their allies fought back— and won a momentous victory when the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its manual of mental disorders in 1973.

La Frontera with Pati Jinich Friday, October 15 and 22 at 9pm Savor the sights, sounds, and flavors of the US-Mexico border alongside acclaimed James Beard Award-winning chef Pati Jinich, host of PBS’s Pati’s Mexican Table, as she experiences the region’s rich culture, people, and cuisine.

Voces on PBS – Letters to Eloisa Friday, October 15 at 10pm In this film by Adriana Bosch, Cuban poet José Lezama Lima’s life story is told through letters written to his sister Eloisa, living in exile, between 1961 and 1976. By revealing Lima’s complex and ultimately tragic relationship to the Cuban revolutionary government, Letters to Eloisa is a window into a human soul crushed by repression and intolerance.

Secrets of the Dead – Magellan’s Crossing Wednesday, October 20 at 10pm Secrets of the Dead is part detective story, part true-life drama that unearths evidence from around the world, challenging prevailing ideas and throwing fresh light on unexplained events. This episode explores Ferdinand Magellan and his crew who set sail to gain control of the global spice trade, but end up becoming the first to circumnavigate the earth.

American Veteran Begins Tuesday, October 26 at 9pm American Veteran illuminates the veteran experience with a stunning range of voices from today and across the arc of American history. From the citizen-soldiers returning from the American Revolution to today’s warrior class, they tell a deeply moving story, highlighting personal remembrances, drawing civilian viewers into an unfamiliar culture, and highlighting the evolving relationship between Americans who have served in the military and those who have not. wtiu.org / 3

Alma’s Way Premieres October 4 Alma’s Way, a new animated series from Fred Rogers Productions, premieres Monday, October 4 at 3pm on WTIU. The series is created by Sonia Manzano, beloved by generations as Maria on Sesame Street, who broke new ground as one of the first Latino characters on national TV. The new series also has a WTIU connection. Holly Gregory, creator of our local children’s program The Friday Zone, is the voice director for the first season of Alma’s Way. Inspired by Manzano’s own childhood, Alma’s Way centers on 6-year-old Alma Rivera, a proud, confident Puerto Rican girl who lives in the Bronx with her family among a diverse group of close-knit friends and community members. Infused with Manzano’s humor and grounded in a social and emotional curriculum, the series will give children ages 4-6 the tools to find their own answers, express what they think and feel, and recognize and respect the unique perspective of others. The engaging modern-day series stars Alma, along with her parents, Mami and Papi; younger brother, Junior; her Abuelo; and their lovable little dog, Chacho. In every episode, Alma speaks directly to young viewers with asides and her “Think Through” moments, where she stops, thinks, and processes. She models optimism and determination, showing that if she puts her mind to a problem, she can figure it out. Young viewers will tag along with Alma as she learns to speak up for herself, make tough decisions, figure out how to help friends, and so much more.

AMERICAN MASTERS Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It Tuesday, October 5 at 9pm

Over a career spanning more than 70 years, Rita Moreno defied both her humble upbringing and relentless racism to become a celebrated and award-winning actor. American Masters – Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It explores the star’s rich, decades-long career using vérité footage of Moreno today, archival footage of her roles and appearances, reenactments of her childhood, animation, and interviews with Moreno, those close to her and performers she influenced. Film interviewees include Gloria Estefan, Morgan Freeman, Mitzi Gaynor, Whoopi Goldberg, Eva Longoria, Justina Machado, Terrence McNally, Karen Olivo, as well as Norman Lear and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who are also executive producers on the project. Born into poverty on a Puerto Rican farm, Moreno and her seamstress mother immigrated to New York City when Moreno was five years old. After studying dance and performing on Broadway, Moreno was cast as any ethnic minority the Hollywood studios needed filled: Polynesian, Native American, Egyptian, and more. Despite becoming the first Latina actress to win an Academy Award for her role as Anita

in West Side Story, the studios continued to offer Moreno lesser roles as stereotypical ethnic minorities, ignoring her proven talent. Beyond the racism she experienced as a Latina actor, American Masters – Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go for It explores the lesser-known struggles Moreno faced on her path to stardom, including pernicious Hollywood sexism and sexual abuse, a toxic relationship with Marlon Brando, and an attempted suicide a year before she won her Oscar. The documentary also revisits her notable roles, including The Electric Company, the Broadway and feature film version of The Ritz, Oz, and, most recently, One Day at a Time. The documentary demonstrates Moreno’s talent and resilience as she broke barriers, paved the way for new generations of artists by refusing to be pigeonholed, and fought for Latinx representation in a variety of genres.
