THIS MONTH’S HIGHLIGHTS Future of Work Wednesdays at 10pm, beginning September 1 Future of Work is a three-part series exploring monumental changes in the workplace and the long-term impact on workers, employers, educators, and communities. Since early 2020, the world has been rocked by triple crises: the global pandemic, the ensuing economic disruptions, and the forefronting of long-existing racial inequities. Is the US about to enter a future of entrenched haves and have-nots?
Great Performances: Yannick – An Artist’s Journey Friday, September 3 at 9pm Experience the music director of the Metropolitan Opera's meteoric rise to become one of the most acclaimed and sought-after music directors of his generation. Cinema verite filmmaker Susan Froemke follows the maestro from ten-yearold budding conductor to the pinnacle of the opera world.
Guilt on Masterpiece Sunday, September 5 at 9pm “It’s not the crime, it’s the cover-up” goes the old saying. But that didn’t stop brothers Max and Jake from hiding their guilt after running into an elderly pedestrian during an inebriated drive home from a wedding. Mark Bonnar (Unforgotten) and Jamie Sives (To the Ends of the Earth) star as Max and Jake in a darkly absorbing tale of rascality and deceit.
FRONTLINE: America After 9/11 Tuesday, September 7 at 9pm From wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to torture, secret prisons, domestic surveillance and covert black ops, FRONTLINE’s investigative team reveals the secret history of two decades defined by what happened on that Tuesday in September. Drawing on new interviews and one of the richest archives in television, FRONTLINE reveals how the choices made after the attacks reshaped our world and our democracy.

Open a Book, Open the World: The 2021 Library of Congress National Book Festival Sunday, September 12 at 6pm Explore interviews, insights, and artistic expressions from some of the nation’s most significant and prolific literary voices with a glimpse into their creative processes and environments. The program features an impressive group of authors, including Kacen Callender, Roxane Gay, Marcus Samuelsson, Angie Thomas, and many more.
American Experience: Sandra Day O’Connor: The First Monday, September 13 at 9pm During her 25 years on the Supreme Court, Sandra Day O’Connor was the critical swing vote on cases involving some of the 20th century’s most controversial issues, including race, gender, and reproductive rights—and she was the tiebreaker on Bush v. Gore. Forty years after her confirmation, this biography recounts the life of a pioneering woman who both reflected and shaped an era.
Eliades Ochoa: From Cuba to the World Thursday, September 16 at 9pm Explore the life and career of acclaimed guitarist and singer Eliades Ochoa, who rose to worldwide fame in the late ’90s as an original member of the legendary international Cuban band, the Buena Vista Social Club. Through rare photographs, archival footage, and interviews with family, friends, and fellow musicians, this documentary paints an intimate portrait of a Ochoa and details the larger arc of traditional Cuban Son music.
American Experience: Citizen Hearst Monday, September 27 and Tuesday, September 28 at 9pm The first practitioner of what is now known as “synergy,” William Randolph Hearst used his media stronghold to achieve unprecedented political power, then ran for office himself. Perhaps best known as the inspiration for Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane, Hearst died in 1951 at the age of 88, having transformed the media’s role in American life and politics. This two-part, four-hour film is based on historian David Nasaw’s biography, The Chief: The Life of William Randolph Hearst. wtiu.org / 3

WTIU Wins Ernie Pyle Legacy Award for Media Congratulations to WTIU and producer/director Todd Gould on winning the 2020 Ernie Pyle Legacy Award for Media! Gould and WTIU were recognized by the Ernie Pyle Legacy Foundation for their work on our locally-produced documentary Ernie Pyle: Life in the Trenches. The award was presented on National Ernie Pyle Day, August 3, 2021. Ernie Pyle: Life in the Trenches tells the story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist who reached millions each week with stories about ordinary Americans doing extraordinary things. The program is narrated by Emmy award-winning journalist and former CBS News anchor Dan Rather. Actor Jonathan Banks—from TV series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul—gives voice to Ernie Pyle and his most acclaimed writings and personal correspondence to his closest friends and family. The film also includes notable interviews with the late Walter Cronkite and Andy Rooney, as well as a number of World War II veterans, contemporary journalists, and historians. The documentary reveals that through two of the darkest chapters in America’s history, the Great Depression and World War II, the voice of Ernie Pyle became the voice of the American people—a voice of promise, grit, and determination. Learn more about Ernie Pyle: Life in the Trenches at wtiu.org/erniepyle.

Join Us for Swing in September! The popular Jazz in July concert series is temporarily moving to the fall this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the partnership of WFIU and the Department of Jazz Studies at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, Swing in September will continue the Jazz in July tradition of featuring a variety of musical acts from swing bands to jazz vocalists and more! Four free, family-friendly concerts will be held every Friday in September at 6:30 p.m. in Dunn Meadow on the Indiana University campus. We encourage guests to bring lawn chairs, blankets, or even a picnic! The concert series kicks off on Friday, September 3 at 6:30 p.m. with the Midcoast Swing Orchestra, followed by Organism on September 10, Rachel Caswell on September 17, and the IU Jazz Faculty on September 24. The concerts will be emceed by WFIU hosts Mark Chilla, David Brent Johnson, and William Morris. In the event of rain, the concerts will be moved indoors to Recital Hall. Swing in September is made possible with support from presenting partner Greene & Schultz Trial Lawyers and supporting partner IU Credit Union Investment Services. Muhammad Ali
Sunday, September 19 to Wednesday, September 22 at 8pm Ken Burns’ new documentary on Muhammad Ali follows the life of the three-time heavyweight boxing champion who captivated billions of fans with his combination of speed, agility, and power in the ring, and his charm, wit, and outspokenness outside of it. At the height of his fame, Ali challenged Americans’ racial prejudices, religious biases, and notions about what roles celebrities and athletes play in our society, and inspired people all over the world with his message of pride and self-affirmation. Drawing from an extraordinary trove of archival footage and photographs, contemporary music, and the insights and memories of eyewitnesses— including family and friends, journalists, boxers, and historians, among others—Burns, along with writers and co-directors Sarah Burns and David McMahon, have created a sweeping portrait of an American icon. The series details the story of the athlete who called himself—and was considered by many to be—“the greatest of all time” and competed in some of the most dramatic and widely viewed sporting events ever, including “The Fight of the Century” and “The Thrilla in Manila,” both against his great rival Joe Frazier, and “The Rumble in the Jungle,” in which
he defeated George Foreman to regain the heavyweight title that was stripped from him seven years earlier. Muhammad Ali creates a complex portrait of man with many contradictions in his life. Despite his competitive reputation and ruthless athleticism in the ring, he went on to become a symbol for peace and pacifism. Though committed to a faith that expected obedience and dignified conduct, he was notoriously unfaithful to his wives, at times publicly flaunting his affairs. Ali was a clever showman with an unparalleled genius for promotion and turn of phrase, who occasionally allowed his partners and friends to take advantage of him. He endlessly trumpeted his own greatness as a boxer, but anonymously donated to save a Jewish old age home, made surprise visits to pediatric hospitals, and signed autographs for every last fan.
