TAMANDA CHITALO

A global perspective on social work.

Master of Social Work (MSW) student Tamanda Chitalo enrolled in graduate school at Indiana State University before ever stepping foot on the Terre Haute campus. The student from Blantyre, Malawi knew what career she wanted to pursue; after securing a graduate assistantship from Indiana State, she left her home and her native country to follow that dream.

Tamanda Chitalo enjoys Indiana State’s MSW program because she can express her views, offer a different perspective as an international student, and learn more about herself. And she is able to apply her classroom learning in dynamic social work environments.

Tamanda credits faculty in the MSW program for helping her navigate through graduate school and for recommending her for scholarships and experiential learning opportunities. She completed an internship with the Hamilton Center in the Vigo County Outpatient Department, where she worked in community mental health and managed cases with individuals and families suffering from serious mental

illnesses. She also completed a fellowship program with an organization in Boston, where she learned to provide quality care to under-resourced communities.

Throughout her time in the MSW program at Indiana State, Tamanda believes she has grown professionally and culturally as a social worker. She comments, “Almost a year ago, I was a new student with a lot of anxiety about how it [my education] would work out. Right now, I can confidently say I am successfully navigating the sails and experiencing growth in the process as an African international student. The learning and opportunities for growth and development are endless.”

“I chose Indiana State when I learned that the Master of Social Work program was accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. Coming in from overseas, I had to make sure I was getting into a program that was recognized and worth the time investment. A month before coming to the United States, I was able to secure a graduate assistantship, which meant full funding. So, I was like, ‘Why not?’”

I had so much going on [personally] and people didn’t know if I could complete the program, but I had everything ready to go and was ahead on clinical hours. The first half of the semester I paced myself with help from my preceptors, classmates, and faculty. I went through a lot over the semester and still persevered, and I passed the national boards the day after Christmas. My instructors were so amazing! I was an A student and when all of this happened, they worked with me, were gracious, and helped me get through and do well.”

ADAM FERGUSON

“This degree is not only helping me for what I do now, which is a lot more administrative and human resource issues, but I also do more grant writing. That aspect of the MPA program has been very applicable to my current role. We’re a communityoriented police department, so we have lots of interactions with various social service agencies and not-for-profits. Indiana State’s MPA program fits in seamlessly with that.”

MPA Student Department of Political Science

CARLA MORALES, ’24

“I had a great relationship with faculty members during my undergrad, and graduate school has expanded on that. You can find the department faculty in their office ready to talk to students on any day. Everyone has been supportive and flexible. I enjoy being able to ask questions and discuss different issues that I’ve read about or that we are seeing in the news.”

SHANTA BANSTOLA

“Overall, my experience has been enriching. I always wanted to go abroad and pursue a higher degree. I have learned how to become independent because back in my country [Nepal], we are more dependent on our family emotionally and even for the smallest stuff. Indiana State taught me how to be independent in every aspect. I enjoy the campus and university. Within my department, we are a small group, but diverse. Everybody is so friendly and approachable, including our professors.”

“I am impressed by the Scott College of Business MBA program. After moving from the in-person to the online format, I felt like I hadn’t missed a beat, and the quality of the education has remained high. Our professors have put a lot of thought into the curriculum, which focuses on what a student needs to know in tomorrow’s business world.”

DR. LINDSEY EBERMAN

Inspiring students to love research!

Dr. Lindsey Eberman influences students to overcome all challenges – big or small. As professor and program director of Indiana State’s Doctorate in Athletic Training (DAT) program, she encourages students to be patient-centered, clinically expert practitioners while also continuing her own independent research.

In Indiana State’s DAT program, Dr. Eberman wants her students to care about research. A self-described “research bug,” she has published more than 200 research manuscripts. A large portion of these publications were co-authored by students and alumni. Much of her research focuses on heat physiology and the effects of heat stroke on athletes. Other research investigates leadership techniques aligned with Eberman’s work as director of Indiana State’s Leadership and Professional Development bachelor’s program and the Instructional Leadership PhD program.

“I want my students to be excited about what they’re learning. I try to make learning fun but also practical for their future

careers,” Eberman says. The professor’s commitment to student success and research has been recognized through numerous awards, including the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Emerging Educator Award, the NATA Professional Development Excellence Award, and the NATA Gail Weldon Award of Excellence. In 2024, she received the President’s Medal from Indiana State, its highest faculty honor.

But Eberman isn’t done with her work yet. She plans to continue mentoring students, completing research with her graduate students, and finding new ways for them to discover the joy in learning.

“I have been able to grow in my field [at Indiana State] and learn more about marketing. The academic programs encourage me to shadow marketing professionals to have a firsthand look at what I’ll be doing in my future career.”
Isaac Young, ‘24 Communication MA

ISAAC YOUNG

Giving back to his community!

Isaac Young is passionate about supporting communities. Through his research as a Communication graduate student, he observed opportunity gaps in communities and how factors – including race, language, economic status, and family situations – affect educational achievements and careers.

When he was an undergraduate student at Indiana State University, Isaac knew the importance of finding his community on campus. This included joining organizations within the Charles E. Brown African American Cultural Center, where he learned marketing strategies by creating promotional materials for organizations. And his graduate education enhanced these communication skills through a theoretical perspective.

Isaac completed an Ethnographic creative graduate student capstone project in which he reviewed descriptions of people and cultures to determine opportunity gaps in communities. His project involved writing proposals on how specific actions could help eliminate these opportunity gaps, particularly in his hometown – Cahokia, Illinois, a suburb of St. Louis. Isaac says, “I want to give back to my community as much as I can. People don’t give back to their communities anymore. They graduate and leave their homes. I want to do something different.”
