WINTER 2024 COMMENCEMENT

From the President

Dear Class of 2024,

Congratulations! Today, you join a proud and distinguished legacy of Sycamores. As we celebrate your winter commencement, I am honored to stand with your families, friends, and the entire Indiana State community to recognize your hard work and achievements. This moment is especially meaningful to me, as it marks my first commencement as your president. It is a privilege to share this milestone with you.

For many, this day represents more than the culmination of years of study; it is a tribute to your perseverance, courage, and the steadfast support of your loved ones. I know that some of you are the first in your family to reach this milestone. To your family and supporters who have been by your side, this is their achievement as well. Today, we celebrate your loved ones alongside you.

As you step into careers, advanced studies, or community service, remember that you are well-prepared for future success. Embrace new challenges, stay connected with those around you, and use your talents to strengthen the communities and workplaces you will serve. Your journey thus far has shown the power of education, determination, and resilience. As an alumnus your support, engagement, and contributions are the foundation of Indiana State’s ongoing success. Whether you offer your time, resources, or experience, you will be a critical part of our progress, inspiring the next generation of Sycamores and showing them what is possible.

Stay connected with your Sycamore family, share your milestones, and come back to campus for Homecoming and other events. We’ll be here to celebrate your continued achievements and to cheer you on every step of the way.

Congratulations, Class of 2024!

Go Sycamores!

Congratulations and warm regards,

The Academic Procession

The academic regalia, which adds interest and color to the Commencement procession, is as old in history as are universities—that is, more than eight hundred years old. The academic hood, which is worn as an adornment today, served a practical purpose in days of unheated classrooms and cold sleeping quarters.

During the traditional academic procession, the gown and hood indicate the degree held by the wearer or the one about to be received. The hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Graduates of certain institutions wear gowns in the color of the university. The doctoral gown is faced down the front with velvet panels and has three velvet crossbars on each sleeve. The velvet may be black or may be the color which represents the field in which the degree was conferred.

Since the degrees earned by the faculty of Indiana State University represent many colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, with a wide range of degree fields, the variety of attire forms a bright and colorful pattern.

The Commencement processional of faculty symbolizes recognition for their contributions to the University through awards, faculty rank, and years of service. It begins with full professors/librarians, followed by associate professors/associate librarians, assistant professors/assistant librarians, and ends with instructors, each group arranged according to their years of service.

Commencement Mace

A Commencement mace has been carried in every Commencement ceremony since 1966. The original mace was a gift to Professor Caleb Mills, State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Indiana from 1854-1857. Mills, who earned the title of “Father of Public Education,” was instrumental in the establishment of Indiana State Normal School—now Indiana State University. The original mace was actually a walking cane decorated with blue and white silk ribbons representing the school’s colors.

The original mace was replaced in 2010. A new mace was designed and produced by Mark Joseph Clauss, mechanical technologist and lecturer in Indiana State University’s Bailey College of Engineering and Technology. The mace is made of cherry hardwood with a replica of the University’s Presidents Medallion embedded at the top. The medallion is a four-inch gold medal with 36 blue sapphire gemstones and the official University seal at the center.

Scholarship Honors

Those students graduating with a scholarship index of 3.90 or higher will be graduated Summa Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.70 and 3.89 will be graduated Magna Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.50 and 3.69 will be graduated Cum Laude. Recognition of these special honors will be made in appropriate fashion at the Commencement ceremonies and on the diplomas.

From the Dean

Honors College

As Dean of the Honors College, it is my great privilege to congratulate you on the wonderful achievement and milestone of your graduation. The journey to commencement is challenging, academically and personally; this road demands persistence and sacrifice, but ultimately forges a more thoughtful and confident person. As graduates of the Honors College, you have stepped beyond your chosen disciplines and professional aspirations to be further tested and have been found excellent and capable. You were drawn together in this experience not by what you studied, but by how you think—across boundaries, imaginatively, applying your energy and creativity to the challenges of your generation, to no less an end than improving the world. The astronomer and educator Carl Sagan once stated: “Our species needs, and deserves, a citizenry with minds wide awake and an understanding of how the world works . . . We make our world significant by the courage of our questions and the depth of our answers.” You are these wide awake and courageous people. You have reached this moment by asking the difficult questions and pushing yourselves, but what will you do next?

My advice is to be bold—seize this day, and the days to follow. Do not be afraid, of failure, rejection, criticism, seeming foolish in front of your peers. It is possible to walk timidly in life, to be passive in success, to listen but offer little. Don’t be that person. Your life, your perspectives, and especially your questions are not some add-on or a bonus feature in the world; they are its lifeblood. Dream large—now is the time for this. With your ability, your drive and your aspirations, there simply isn’t anything you can’t strive for. You are, quite literally, the leaders of the very near future. We live in a world that is experiencing wild changes in technological capacity, complex and perilous environmental issues, resource and economic concerns that are truly global, and as great a need as ever to understand the cultural foundations and motivations of others. You won’t shrink from these challenges because your education has prepared you for them.

Please remember that you will always be a member of the Honors community at Indiana State. We hope that you will return often to share your wisdom and insight with us and the generations of students that follow you. On behalf of the Honors College, I wish you the very best!

Bayh College of Education

Congratulations, graduates! I am grateful we are able to celebrate this important event together. Whether you are on the cusp of starting your career or you are advancing in a new or existing professional pursuit, the faculty and staff of the Bayh College of Education are very proud of you and recognize all that you have accomplished.

As you move forward, proudly remember that you will always be an Indiana State University Sycamore and will be forever considered an alumnus. You come from a University whose tradition was founded upon teacher education when the Indiana State Normal School was established in 1865. The school was renamed the Indiana State Teachers College in 1929 and renamed once more when we became Indiana State University in 1965.

As the University has grown, so has the Bayh College of Education. Our program offerings have extended beyond teacher education and leadership programs to include Library and Information Sciences, Gerontology, and the allied professions of Counseling, Speech-Language Pathology, and School Psychology. We have built on our solid foundation, and we continuously improve our courses and programs through the help of our various professional advisory boards, our professional networks, and our students. We do this to provide you with the relevant knowledge, course work, and authentic experiences to be successful in today’s world.

We hope you will intentionally network with us and with each other. You have built personal and professional relationships at Indiana State University that can keep you grounded, yet challenge you to grow. Remember that we are always here to help and support you. We offer advanced course work, various professional development days for our alumni, and continued mentoring—because we remain invested in your success. Do let us know how you are doing, how we might help, and how we might continuously improve.

Again, please accept my warmest congratulations on accomplishing this important milestone! On behalf of the faculty and staff of the Bayh College of Education, we wish you the very best.

National Anthem

Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?

Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?

And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.

Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Alma Mater

Out upon the swelling breezes, let our voices ring As to thee, our Alma Mater, heartfelt praise we sing. Though the years to come may part us, Friends and comrades true, ISU, our Alma Mater, here’s our pledge to you.
