Jerry Mathers Honorary Degree Recipient and Keynote Speaker

“You know, working isn’t as much fun as I thought it would be. I wonder why older people do it so much” -Beaver Cleaver This is an example of the endearing words said by Jerry “The Beaver” Mathers, who is known as an American institution.

Born on June 2, 1948, in Sioux City, Iowa, Jerry’s television and show business career began at the age of two when he did a Pet Condensed Milk commercial.

It was 1957, however, when Mathers entered the hearts and homes of America in as Theodore “Beaver” Cleaver. An immediate success, the show gained national attention and ran for six seasons, totaling 234 episodes. In addition to his noted works as a television actor, Mr. Mathers achieved great success on the big screen and on stage. In fact, he made his Broadway debut in 2007 as Wilbur Turnblad in the Tony-winning musical “Hairspray” at the Neil Simon Theater.

In the mid-1990s, Mr. Mathers was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. He took preventive action, lost 55 pounds and is currently one of the leading lecturers on living with and dealing with diabetes. He has been invited to share his experience with diabetes on “Larry King Live” numerous times and has spoken to the congressional caucus on diabetes at the Capitol.

Jerry also speaks with the media to alert individuals about the importance of early diagnosis, diet and exercise and the proper treatment of diabetes.

2016 HONORARY DEGREE

In 2009 and 2010, Jerry was the national spokesperson for PhRMA and their Partnership for Prescription Assistance program. This organization helps uninsured and financially struggling patients obtain prescription medicines for free or at a lower cost. The program is a nationwide effort, sponsored by America’s pharmaceutical research and manufacturing companies to raise awareness of patient assistance programs and address the rising rates of chronic disease.

Jerry continues to do commercial work for national and regional spots.

When his schedule permits, Jerry, an FCC-licensed broadcaster, guest hosts on radio programs from coast to coast.

THE TRADITION

OF ACADEMIC COMMENCEMENT

In antiquity, the first educational degrees were probably conferred at a general gathering of the student body. As early as 500 B.C., the medical school at Athens, Greece, for example, awarded inscribed lead plates at a formal degree-granting ceremony. Parchment diplomas eventually replaced lead plates, and graduates may have received degrees written on a sheepskin parchment as early as 848 A.D. Master’s degrees and doctor’s degrees were awarded by medieval European universities. The first recorded baccalaureate degree was given by the University of Paris in the 13th Century. Originally, the degree was a license to teach.

In America, the colonists used the European universities as models for the schools which they founded, and European graduation traditions were adopted. The first American college was Harvard College, founded Oct. 28, 1636. The first Bachelor of Science degree was conferred by Wesleyan University (Connecticut) in 1838; the bachelor’s degree now is the standard American degree which signifies completion of a fouryear degree program.

All degree candidates, college officials, faculty and dignitaries are attired in traditional medieval cap and gown. Black is the standard gown color; however, commencement participants are entitled to wear distinctive tassels on their caps or hoods of various colors over their gowns.

A bachelor’s gown is black with a closed front and long, pointed, open sleeves. A master’s gown is open in front with extremely long, closed sleeves. The doctor’s gown also is open in the front, but has bell-shaped sleeves on which appear three velvet bars.

Bachelor’s hoods being worn by the graduates in today’s commencement are short with a narrow velvet edging, the color of which indicates the degree area. The orange and black lining symbolizes the degree granting institution, Indiana Tech.

The colors allocated to the various fields of learning have been largely standardized in the United States by the Intercollegiate Bureau of Academic Costume, and accepted by the American Council on Education in its Academic Costume Code. HONOR CORDS Indiana Tech recognizes three levels of outstanding academic achievement by undergraduates when a degree is earned. The level of distinction is indicated on transcripts. These students are wearing gold honor cords. ***Summa Cum Laude (with greatest honor) GPA of 3.90 and above **Magna Cum Laude (with great honor) GPA of 3.70 and above *Cum Laude (with honor) GPA of 3.50 and above Many nationally recognized honor societies also designate academic achievement with honor cords and/or medallions.

Following are explanations of additional colors today.

Alpha Chi Honor Society Region V, Indiana Lambda, Chapter 279 Alpha Chi is a national coeducational academic honor society for all disciplines. Since 1922 its purpose has been to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. Membership is limited to the top 10 percent of juniors and seniors and requires confirmation by faculty. The Indiana Tech chapter began in 1986 and holds an induction ceremony for new

members each fall. These students are wearing emerald green and sapphire blue honor cords along with medallions.

Sigma Beta Delta International Honor Society for Business, Management and Administration The purposes of Sigma Beta Delta are to encourage and recognize scholarship and achievement among students of business, management, and administration; and to encourage and promote personal and professional improvement and a life distinguished by honorable service to humankind. To be eligible for membership, a business student must rank in the upper 20 percent of the junior, senior or master’s class as well as satisfy certain credit hour requirements and be invited to membership by the faculty officers.

These students are wearing green and gold honor cords.

Military Red, white, and blue cords signify military service.

Juris Doctorate Purple cords signifiy honors, green signifies law review, orange signifies moot court and white and citron signifies pro bono work.
