Gurugram hotel murder: Divya Pahuja cremated; accused Balraj Gill sent to 4-day police custody Continued from Page 1

Following his arrest in Kolkata, he was brought to Gurugram, and presented on Sunday at a court that sent him to police custody. According to the police, Divya and Abhijeet were in a relationship. Abhijeet told the police that he killed her in a fit of rage after she refused to delete some of his objectionable photos from her mobile phone. The police are, however, yet to recover the 'murder weapon' which was reportedly thrown away by Abhijeet after killing Divya. Balraj Gill had revealed during the transit remand that he and Ravi Banga had thrown Divya's body in Bakhra Canal in Patiala. Five teams of Gurugram Police

were involved in tracking Balraj and Amit who had absconded along with Divya's body since January 2. Divya's body was identified by a tattoo on her back. Also, a clue regarding the whereabouts of the body was received after the arrest of Balraj Gill. In connection with Divya's murder, the police have so far arrested six persons including the prime accused, Abhijeet Singh, his aides Om Prakash, Hemraj, Balraj Gill, Parvesh, and a woman, Megha. The woman had helped Abhijeet in hiding documents and personal belongings of Divya. Om Prakash and Hemraj had helped Abhijeet to drag Divya's body into the boot of a BMW car.

Parvesh had supplied the murder weapon to Abhijeet. Divya came in contact with Abhijeet through a jailed gangster, Binder Gujjar. Binder Gujjar is said to be the prime conspirator in the alleged "fake encounter" of gangster Sandeep Gadoli, along with the Gurugram Police, which took place in Mumbai in 2016. Divya was the prime accused in the case. Later, she was arrested in connection with the gangster's murder, and she spent seven years in jail. She was granted bail last year in June by the Bombay High Court. Divya's family has alleged that her murder was conspired by Sandeep Gadoli's family members, along with Abhijeet.

B’luru CEO killed her son to deny exhusband access to 4-year-old child

Bengaluru, Jan 9 (IANS) The preliminary investigations into the sensational case of the arrest of an Bengaluru CEO for killing her 4-year-old son in Goa has revealed that she committed the crime to deny her ex-husband access to the child after a court granted him visitation rights, sources said on Tuesday. Goa Police in coordination with Karnataka cops have arrested the 39-year-old Suchana Seth, CEO

of a Bengaluru-based Artificial Intelligence start-up company for allegedly murdering her four-year-old son at a service apartment in Goa.

relative’s place and left the hotel.

Sources explained that the accused was directed by the court to allow her former husband to meet the child once a week, on Sundays. The ex-husband worked in a reputed company.

After getting the information from the hotel, the Goa Police got the contact number of the taxi driver and asked him to stop as soon as he spotted a police station on the National Highway.

The accused had travelled to Goa after the court verdict and she allegedly killed her son at a service apartment in Candolimnorth Goa. The incident came to light after the housekeeping staff found blood stains in the room she had stayed in. After checking out, the accused had come out with a big suitcase to head for Bengaluru. As she was boarding the taxi, the hotel staff who had seen her son, enquired about the child. The accused informed the staff that he had been sent to her

Though the report triggered a massive fall in Adani stocks and market value and the billionaire’s wealth nosedived by over 60 per cert, he was not cowed down by the malicious attack.

However, the hotel staff got suspicious after housekeeping staff found blood stains in her room and called the police.

Accordingly, the taxi driver stopped the vehicle near Imangala Police Station. The Goa Police had briefed their Karnataka counterparts about the development. The police found the body of the child in the trunk of the car inside the suitcase. The body was shifted to the mortuary and the accused was taken into custody, police sources said.

Mumbai, Jan 5 (IANS) When Hindenburg Research released its report, making allegations against the Adani Group a year ago, it was difficult to imagine if the conglomerate would ever emerge out of the crisis and continue on its growth path. But Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani showed his mettle and resilience and bounced back from adversity. And how! The US short-seller’s intent to bring down the Group with its damning report and earn profits through its short positions fell flat. The Supreme Court’s judgment on January 3 rejecting the plea for a probe by the CBI or an SIT into the Adani-Hindenburg case laid all speculation to rest. The court also dismissed the petitioners’ reliance on a thirdparty report and affirmed faith in SEBI’s handling of the case. There was a wave of anti-Adani narratives gaining ground following the release of the report in January 2023. Conspiracy theories began to proliferate, finding their way from the fringes into the mainstream. These were discussed and debated by politicians, activists, journalists, and members of the public, making news headlines.

Without wasting any time, he started consolidating his businesses by repaying debts. It was a smart decision to win the investors’ confidence. In the months following the attack, the Group took several measures to regain the trust of investors. Be it GQG Partners or the UAEbased IHC, all reposed trust in him and invested in the Group’s businesses. How many of us can find an upside to an adversity? Or believe that overcoming obstacles is more helpful than having advantages? People close to Adani vouch for the man’s perseverance in the face of a crisis and the way he overcomes an obstacle and turns it into an opportunity. Mundra in Bhuj, Gujarat, is testimony to the man’s obstinacy and vision to create a marvel in the barren lands of Kutch. To achieve this goal, he turned every stumbling block into a positive thing and proved all his critics, who dismissed his idea, wrong. His passion and perseverance led to the creation of the state-ofthe-art Mundra Port, the largest commercial port in India. Building a business with resources at hand is one thing; building an empire from scratch is the act of an alchemist. First came the jetty that made way for a port, which led to a coal-based power plant that paved the way for the mining business.

The Goa Police have taken transit remand of Suchana Seth and she is expected to reach Goa by tonight.

Fifth & final batch of documents Xi Jinping intensifies linked to Jeffrey Epstein released crackdown on industries

New York, Jan 10 (IANS) The fifth and final batch of court documents from a lawsuit connected to the late disgraced American financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein have been released, a week after thousands of pages of files were made public which contained the names of former US President Bill Clinton, Britain's Prince Andrew, late theoretical physicist Steven Hawking, among other noted celebrities. Tuesday's batch of 1,400 pages of records contained depositions with Epstein and his former

girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, who is currently serving a 20-year jail term for crimes she committed with the disgraced financier, the BBC reported

"Fifth" referes to the Fifth Amendment constitutional right against self-incrimination.

The files also revealed that during these depositions, Epstein refused to answer lawyers' questions over 500 times, including about the alleged blackmail of famous men.

In her 2016 deposition released on Tuesday, Giuffre said she was paid between $10,000 to $15,000 for one sexual encounter with the Prince.

The documents are part of a 2015 civil defamation suit brought by Virginia Roberts Giuffre, an American woman who claimed Epstein sexually abused her as a minor and that Maxwell had aided in the abuse. The suit was was settled in 2017. Tuesday's files revealed that while under questioning, a lawyer for Giuffre asked Epstein whether she had been told to provide a "detailed report" about her alleged sexual encounters with powerful men such as Prince Andrew, reports the BBC. The attorney asked whether this was intended to be used as "blackmail material". Epstein refused to answer any of the questions, repeatedly responding by saying just the word "fifth" over 500 times.

We will deepen the rectification of corruption in powerconcentrated, capital- intensive and resource-rich sectors, he said.

He refused even to say whether he knew Maxwell.

Prince Andrew has previously denied knowing Giuffre and also any wrongdoing in relation to Epstein. Other men she claimed to forcefully have sex with include Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, Victoria's Secret boss Les Wexner, billionaire hedge fund investor Glenn Dubin and former US peace envoy George Mitchell. All of these men have previously denied her claims. Giuffre also said she was trafficked to American computer scientist Marvin Minsky and French modelling agent Jean-Luc Brunel. While Minsky died in 2016, Brunel killed himself in a Paris jail in 2022 while awaiting rape and sextrafficking charges.

He said that the party will punish the ‘corruption of flies and ants’ to give the masses a greater sense of gain. Hong Kong, Jan 9 (IANS) Chinese leader Xi Jinping has vowed to go after those who are responsible for the corruption and has launch a campaign which will target industries such as finance, energy and infrastructure, media reports said. China will tackle “hidden risks” and increase the punishment for people who offer bribes, Xi was quoted as saying at a meeting of the Communist Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI), its top antigraft body, state media reported. “While there had been an overwhelming victory in the decade-long anti-corruption push, the situation remains complex,” Xi said. “In the face of such [a] complex situation, there can be no stopping, slacking or compromising on anticorruption,” CNN reported.

Since Xi assumed power in 2012, he has been going after both “tigers,” high ranking officials, as well as “flies,” lower level cadres. The reference to flies and ants refers to corruption by small players or smallerscale corruption that is easier to conceal, CNN reported. The campaign, which is Xi’s signature project, has swept across the ruling Communist Party, the government, the military and state-owned companies in waves. Now its focus will be on state-owned enterprises, including the pharmaceutical sector. Alfred Wu, an associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore, says the message is that the crackdown won’t be ending anytime soon, CNN reported.

New Delhi, Jan 9 (IANS) A blame game has been orchestrated by Iran to target Israel for allegedly playing a part in the terrorist attack in the city of Kerman, last week. Although the Islamic State (IS) terror group claimed responsibility for the attack, Iranian officials reject it and instead blame Israel for its complicity. President Ebrahim Raisi joined mourners in the southern city of Kerman on January 5 for the funerals of 89 people killed in the twin blasts, according to the Iranian media. Suicide bombers struck crowds gathered near the tomb of Revolutionary Guards General Qasem Soleimani to mark the fourth anniversary of his killing in Baghdad in a targeted US drone strike. The terrorist attack on January 3 killed 89 people, which included many women and children, as well as at least a dozen Afghans, state television said. Raisi vowed to avenge the killings; saying, the time and place will be determined by our (Iranian) forces. Whereas, Revolutionary Guards chief

In a statement published on January 6 on Telegram, the IS claimed two of its members "activated their explosives vests" at the gathering. A staunch enemy of the IS, Soleimani headed the Guards' foreign operations arm, the Quds Force, overseeing Iranian military operations across the Middle East. Though some Iranian officials have already hinted at Israel’s involvement in the attack, journalists and active media members have also started bringing to the limelight the differences between the IS's latest statement and its previous ones to prove a second party’s complicity. The Tehran Times reported that the extremist group acknowledged responsibility for the assault more than 30 hours following the explosions. This departs from its usual pattern, as the group typically asserts its role in acts of terror immediately after their occurrence. Also, the IS generally precedes attacks with ominous posts on its social media platforms shortly before they unfold. Surprisingly, no such forewarning preceded the blasts in Kerman, contrasting with the group's established modus operandi.

World’s oceans break record for highest 8 dead after major rioting, unrest in Papua New Guinea temperatures 5 years in a row: Study 90 per cent of global heat ends up in the oceans.

Beijing, Jan 11 (IANS) The oceanic temperatures in 2023 have once again shattered records, and the warming trend will persist throughout this century, even if greenhouse gas emissions were to be halted, according to a new study published on Thursday. The annual research, published in the journal Advances in Atmospheric Sciences, was conducted by a multi-national team of scientists from 17 research institutes spanning China, the US, New Zealand, Italy and France, reports Xinhua news agency. They found that last year was the hottest on record for the world's oceans for the fifth year in a row. Cheng Lijing, lead author of the study and a researcher at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said ocean warming is a key indicator for quantifying climate change, since more than

"Oceans also control how fast the Earth's climate changes. To know what has happened or what will happen to the planet, answers can be found in the oceans," Cheng said. Compared with 2022, the previous hottest year ever recorded, the upper 2,000 meters of the Earth's oceans have absorbed a larger amount of heat, which is "equal to boiling away 2.3 billion Olympicsized swimming pools", Cheng explained. The impact of this is an increase in water temperatures. According to the study, the global average sea surface temperature in 2023 showed a notable rise of 0.23 degrees Celsius compared to the previous year, 2022. The study also calculated the salinity of ocean water, discovering that areas of high salinity experienced an increase in salinity, whereas the opposite was true for areas of lower salinity. "The salty gets saltier, while the fresh gets fresher" pattern also ranked among the top five years.

It can also supercharge weather. The extra heat and moisture that enters into the atmosphere makes storms more severe with heavier rain, stronger winds, and more significant flooding. According to the scientists, ocean warming is an irreversible phenomenon that will persist throughout this century, even if greenhouse gas emissions could be stopped. "This poses new challenges for climate governance, requiring not only emission reduction and increased use of renewable energy sources but also a greater focus on climate change adaptation," said Cheng. He called for strengthened climate monitoring capabilities and improved forecasting and early warning systems to prevent climatic disasters. environmentdisasterdeep diveinternational

US and UK carry out airstrikes against Iran-backed Houthis in Yemen weeks, the US had sought to avoid direct strikes on Yemen because of the risk of escalation in a region already simmering with tension, but the ongoing Houthi attacks on international shipping compelled the coalition to act, CNN reported.

Washington, Jan 12 (IANS) The US and UK militaries launched strikes against several used by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, a US official and a UK official told the media. The strikes were from fighter jets and Tomahawk missiles. More than a dozen Houthi targets were hit by missiles fired from air, surface, and sub-platforms and were chosen for their ability to degrade the Houthis' continued attacks on vessels in the Red Sea, a second US official told CNN. The strikes mark a significant response after the Biden administration and its allies warned that the Iran-backed militant group would bear the consequences of repeated drone and missile attacks on commercial shipping in the Red Sea. They come at a time of huge tension in the Middle East as the US looks to ensure the war in Gaza does not spill out into the wider region. The Biden administration had been wary of striking the Houthis, worrying it could upset a delicate cease-fire between the militant group and Saudi Arabia that was achieved after years of war. Tamil Nadu's achievement of securing investment deals worth ₹6.64 lakh crore is remarkable, to say the least. The diversity of sectors covered, including green energy, electric vehicles, global capability centers, and non-leather footwear, shows the state's commitment to move ahead towards the future. The state’s Chief Minister, M K Stalin's emphasis on generating over 26 lakh jobs through these investments demonstrates the tangible impact on employment and economic growth. The strategic distribution of investments across the state, along with the formation of a committee with a view to ensuring the conversion of memorandums of understanding into actual investments, is a projection of Tamil Nadu's dedication to balanced and sustained development. The event's success, surpassing promises made previously, depicts a promising picture of Tamil Nadu's economic trajectory, from here on. Global participation in the event, with representatives from nine countries engaging in discussions with industry experts and economists, underscores Tamil Nadu's increasing significance on the global investment map. Major players like Tata Power, Sembcorp, Adani Group, and Leap Energy, alongside international commitments from Singapore and Taiwanese firms, show the diverse and widespread impact of these investments. Beyond industrial partnerships, Tamil Nadu showcased its cultural richness and technological advancements through platforms like the 'Village Cooking Channel' on YouTube. The interactive pavilion featuring a robot and 3D-Jallikattu bull further positioned Tamil Nadu as an innovative hub for both cultural and technological pursuits. Similarly, the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024, inaugurated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marked a significant milestone

in the state's journey towards economic prominence. With Memorandums of Understanding signed for 41,299 projects, attracting a whopping ₹26.33 lakh crore in potential investments, Gujarat fortified its position as India's investment magnet. The summit's global appeal, with over 61,000 delegates from 140 countries, reflects Gujarat's growing stature on the international stage. The participation of dignitaries like UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Presidents from Mozambique, TimorLeste, and the Czech Republic adds a diplomatic and strategic dimension to the event. Torrent Group's commitment of ₹47,350 crore to various projects, including renewable energy, solar parks, and hydrogen manufacturing, symbolizes the diversity of investments witnessed during the summit. Indian Home Minister Amit Shah's declaration of India as the preferred destination for production and investment, along with Gujarat being the gateway to a developed India, underscores the summit's broader impact on the national narrative. The emphasis on green initiatives, such as green hydrogen, renewable power, and e-mobility, aligns with global sustainability trends. Major players like Suzuki Motors and DP World pledging investments in a new car factory and a mega port terminal showcase Gujarat's attractiveness across diverse sectors. The summit's focus on the semiconductor industry, with Inidan Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw urging investments and calling for a center of excellence for semiconductor research and development at IIT Gandhinagar, underscores Gujarat's strategic vision. As Gujarat positions itself as a hub for semiconductor innovation, it aligns with the broader narrative of India becoming a global player in technology and manufacturing. Both Tamil Nadu and Gujarat's success stories emphasize the pivotal role global investment summits play in fostering economic growth, job creation, and technological advancements. These platforms provide states with the opportunity to showcase their potential, attract diverse investments, and forge international partnerships. Investors, both domestic and international, seek these summits as strategic entry points into regional markets. The diverse sectors covered, from green energy to semiconductors, showcase a forward-looking approach that is in consonance with global trends, and positions states as leaders in innovation.

for the Maldivian economy. Trade agreements and economic engagements have propelled bilateral trade, crossing USD 300 million in 2021. A bilateral USD currency swap agreement between the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) and Maldives Monetary Authority further underscores the financial cooperation between the two countries.

Global investment summits illuminate India’s economic horizon The recently concluded Global Investors Meet 2024 in Tamil Nadu and the Vibrant Gujarat Global Summit 2024 have catapulted these dynamic Indian states into the spotlight, heralding a new era of economic development, innovation, and global collaboration. These summits, marked by historic investment pledges and strategic partnerships, underscore the critical role such events play in shaping the economic landscape of a nation.

EDITORIAL

The recent call by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel by March 15 has injected a note of uncertainty into the historically strong ties between India and the Maldives. A diplomatic spat fuelled by derogatory comments from Maldivian ministers targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi has strained the traditionally close relationship. Examining the historical foundations, economic engagements, and recent challenges provides insights into the complexities and opportunities inherent in the India-Maldives relationship. Historical foundations History has shown that India has had steadfast support for the Maldives, which forms the basis of the relationship. The 1988 coup attempt in the Maldives saw Operation Cactus, where Indian armed forces intervened, laying the foundation for a robust bilateral connection. This history of standing by each other in times of crisis has fostered trust between the two countries. Underpinning this relationship is India's Neighbourhood First Policy, which places strategic importance on countries in close proximity, and the Maldives holds a pivotal role in this context. Proximity to India's west coast and its central location in vital commercial sea lanes make the Maldives a linchpin in India's strategic priorities. The 'Net Security Provider' role that India plays in the Maldives signifies their defense cooperation. Joint exercises, including "Ekuverin," "Dosti," "Ekatha," and "Operation Shield," underscore the collaborative efforts in maintaining the safety and security of the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). This defense partnership contributes significantly to the Security And Growth for All in the Region (SAGAR) vision advocated by India. Economic & trade engagements The economic aspect of IndiaMaldives relations has flourished over the years. India's status as one of the largest sources of tourists for the Maldives fortifies the economic ties between the two nations. In 2023, India led the list of visitors to the Maldives, contributing substantially to the tourism sector, which is a lifeline

Development and capacitybuilding initiatives represent another aspect of the economic collaboration. Infrastructure projects, healthcare assistance, educational programs, and cultural connectivity initiatives have strengthened the foundations of this relationship beyond the realms of security and economy. Challenges for bilateral relations Despite the historical and economic underpinnings, recent frictions have emerged, testing the resilience of India-Maldives relations. Derogatory comments by Maldivian ministers following Indian Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep sparked tensions. India officially raised the issue, leading to the suspension of the ministers involved. The subsequent 'India Out' campaign, coupled with President Muizzu's call for the withdrawal of Indian troops, intensifies the challenges. The 'India Out' initiative amplifies scepticism about India's investments, defense partnerships, and security provisions, reflecting a shift in the geopolitical landscape. The revocation of the hydrographic survey agreement adds another layer of complexity. Maldives' apprehensions about India's hydrographic activity being a form of intelligence collection underscore the delicate nature of maritime security collaboration. The increasing influence of China in the Maldives adds a geopolitical dimension to the challenges. The Maldives' participation in China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and a Free-Trade Agreement (FTA) with China signify a pivot in the strategic considerations of the island nation. The way forward To go beyond the complexities and rejuvenate the India-Maldives relationship, a multifaceted approach is needed. The first could be to find out and develop tourism destinations in India for Indian and foreign travellers; therefore Lakshadweep is being developed to that end. This should not be viewed as a coercive Indian tactic, but an initiative to drive home the point that the Maldives needs India more than the latter needs the former. Another step is investing in basic infrastructure for undiscovered coastal areas can diversify tourism opportunities. Regular diplomatic dialogues between leaders and officials of both the countries should

be prioritized to address the contentious issues between the two nations. Continued Indian support to the Maldives for its infrastructure development, healthcare, and education can enhance India's role as a reliable partner. There is also a need to reiterate India's commitment to being a 'first responder' in times of crisis, which will give a boost to enhance trust between the two countries. Then, an effort should also be made through diplomatic channels to send across a strong message to smaller nations like the Maldives to exercise prudence in dealing with neighbours like India, who have always stood by them and ensured stability in their regions. This can prevent unnecessary provocations. Specifically, diplomatic solutions should be given priority over confrontations, by reminding each other of their shared history and cultural relations. There is also a need for crafting a comprehensive Indian Ocean strategy. This calls for maximizing maritime security efforts, which can contribute to the safety and freedom of navigation in critical sea lanes. There should also be active participation in humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, through various alliances. This will highlight India's commitment to regional security. Then, media, especially social media’s role cannot be underestimated in establishing friendly relations between the two countries. Instead of acting irresponsibly, a responsible social media can lead to strong peopleto-people relations between the two countries. Also, promoting responsible behaviour on social media is vital for building a positive image. This requires the acknowledging of the role of social media can play in promoting national interest, while, at the same time, discouraging actions that may be counterproductive. Pondering over the IndiaMaldives relationship, one can discern that it stands at a crossroads, facing challenges that need a balanced but comprehensive response. While recent events have introduced strains, the historical, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations provide a foundation for overcoming these hurdles. A coordinated effort to address concerns, build trust, and strengthen regional cooperation will be essential for keeping intact India’s regional and geopolitical importance in the region, which is in the larger interest of the Maldives. It is in the interest of both the countries to engage in dialogue and diplomacy, and bring the relationship back to normalcy.

Jan 16-31, 2024 - Vol 4, Issue 12

2024: Global Election Fest New Delhi, Jan 1 (IANS) 2024 will be a historic election year, when democracy will undergo a major test with elections in approximately 70 countries including the US, India, Mexico and South Africa. More than 3.7 billion voters will head to the polls, and their results may have global impact and ramifications. The current year will be the greatest year for democracy and democratic institutions worldwide. The greatest power in the world (the US), the most-populous country (India), the biggest trading bloc (the European Union), the largest Muslim country (Indonesia), the largest Spanish-speaking country (Mexico) and the territory that is the most contentious one between the two superpowers of this century (Taiwan), all will hold elections in 2024. A total of more than 3.7 billion inhabitants around 70 countries -- or almost half of the global population -- will head to cast their votes in either presidential or legislative elections in the coming year. The verdict of these polls may have profound consequences on the lives of people and on a world that is going through a turbulent time, with on-going brutal wars in Ukraine and Gaza, as the West seems falling into decline, with no clear alternative. On a geopolitical level, this electoral jamboree might have a major impact. Major disruptive results include the return of Donald Trump to the White House, a third consecutive victory in Taiwan by candidates that Beijing considers hostile, or a consolidation of the extreme right

in the European Union, all of which could lead to far-reaching consequences.

Scandinavia, and military coup plotters and Islamists from Venezuela to Chad.

In addition to these, other elections to watch out for include the potential presidential elections in Venezuela to those in Ukraine, from Indonesia to South Africa and Mexico, besides the UK -- where a substantial change of course would not be expected regardless of the outcome.

Yet the report said while 35 countries experienced declines in political rights and civil liberties, 34 saw overall gains. Autocrats were neither infallible nor unbeatable.

Test for Democracy However, what might be the worrisome aspect of these elections is the litmus test which democracy will undergo. Surveys by different international think tanks and institutes indicate dissatisfaction with the presentday working of democratic institutions -- a sentiment common throughout the nations of the west -- meaning, the US and Europe - even though they see themselves as democracy’s home ground. A recent Ipsos opinion poll in western countries found a widespread belief that current democratic systems favour the rich and powerful and ignore everyone else. Freedom House, the independent, US-based watchdog concluded in its 2023 report that the Global Freedom Index declined for the 17th consecutive year. The principle of free speech, essential to a fully functioning democracy, is also under attack. Paradoxically, this unprecedented vote-fest comes at a moment when classic forms of liberal democracy are under existential attack from authoritarians and dictators such as China’s Xi Jinping and Russia’s Vladimir Putin, far-right nationalist-populist parties such as in Austria, Hungary and

The geopolitical and economic impacts of so many ballot box battles, occurring more or less at once, may combine to further destabilise an unstable world -for good or bad. Rise of the Far Right The European continent will see elections in Austria, Belgium, Croatia and Finland, as well as for the European Parliament in June. The pervasive fear is that they may accelerate advances by nationalist-populist, antimigrant, xenophobic parties of the far right, matching those seen recently in Italy, the Netherlands and Slovakia. The results will shape the new chamber, with possible new legislative majorities that will influence the leadership of the EU. One wonders how high the far-right wave may rise. The average of polls compiled by Politico magazine indicates a rise of the two far-right blocs and a decline in support of the traditional European conservatives, social democrats, liberals and greens. Even so, the latter groups might retain a comfortable majority. The crux of the question is to see if an eventual coalition between populist and far-right groups could form an alternative majority. At the beginning of December, in the seat projection put out by Politico, the distance between extremists and moderates was only about 20

seats, out of a total of 720. India and Its Neighbours For India, which itself will be holding the general elections, in which the incumbent Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to score a hat trick, will watch closely elections in its neighbourhood i.e. in Pakistan and Bangladesh which may have a major regional and strategic impact. Pakistan is plagued by a serious economic crisis and high political tensions, including arrests and attempted assassinations of political leaders. Following the dissolution of Parliament back in August, elections should have been held within 90 days, but have been postponed twice. They are now scheduled for February. The country -- with some 240 million inhabitants -- has enormous strategic depth, not only due to its nuclear arsenal, but also due to its close relationship with China. The Beijing-Islamabad axis is New Delhi’s biggest concern. The first election of 2024 could be one of the most contentious. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the ruling Awami League have dominated Bangladeshi politics for the past fifteen years. Over that time, they have increasingly eroded Bangladesh’s democracy. As Freedom House puts it, the AL “has consolidated political power through sustained harassment of the opposition and those perceived to be allied with it, as well as of critical media and voices in civil society.” The US has been pressing Sheikh Hasina for months to hold freeand-fair elections, that pressure has yet to pay off. Major Elections At the global level the US elections and those of the EU may have a major bearing on India’s foreign and defence policies, with some

SPECIAL FEATURES overlap on its internal politics, too. The US presidential elections next November have immense disruptive potential. The possibility that Trump will be the Republican candidate and return to the White House is still not ruled out. A Trump-return to the White House would represent a major shake-up with associated risks. It would be a step towards American isolationism at a time when rival powers are questioning the world order that Washington has created. Trump would embody a break with ‘America for the world’ scenario, his “America first” doctrine means limiting efforts and expenses in distant horizons. It’s doubtful whether he would commit to supporting Taiwan if it comes under attack, or whether he would maintain financing and security guarantees made to Ukraine and NATO. New trade wars would be likely, as would a withdrawal of commitments against climate change. In addition, the elections in 2024 will further highlight the manner in which our lives have become slaves to the social media and this will have an impact on the election processes too. As Kay Spencer, program director of elections at the Washingtonbased National Democratic Institute (NDI) puts it, the year 2024 is a big year for social media platforms and it will be important to monitor how they will manage all the elections that are coming up. Indeed 2024 might prove to be a year, which consolidates the liberal democratic principles and institutions, or lead to their further erosion. is the fact that the rally was a bit skewed to the last 45 days of the calendar year whether it is India or the US. Of course, the reasons were different and there is no similarity between the two whatsoever. Let us look at the growth during the year.

New Delhi, Dec 31 (IANS) The calendar year 2023 was a great year for Indian markets and they fared very well. In the year, BSE SENSEX gained 11,399.52 points or 18.74 per cent to close at 72,240.26 points. Similarly, NIFTY gained 3,626.10 points or 20.03 per cent to close at 21,731.40 points. In the same period, Dow gained 4,484.59 points or 13.53 per cent to close at 37,631.87 points. What is distinctive or stands out

www.indianews.com.au

Markets made their bottom for the year in March. The level on the BSE SENSEX at that time was about 57,000 points. From there they rose to make a new lifetime high in July at a level of 67,619 points. A couple of months later, this was again violated and a new level of 67,927 points was achieved in September. The next set of movements began in December and the rise was steep and the inclination was difficult to comprehend. SENSEX has risen virtually non-stop and closed the year at a level of 72,240.26 points while NIFTY closed at a level of 21,731.40 points. The rise in SENSEX in the first ten months of 2023 was 3,034.19

points or 4.99 per cent while in NIFTY it was 974.30 points or 5.38 per cent. In November, the rally in SENSEX was 3,113.51 points or 4.87 per cent while it was 1,053.55 points or 5.52 per cent in NIFTY. The rally in December was steep, with SENSEX gaining 5,251.82 points or 7.84 per cent and NIFTY gaining 1,598.25 points or 7.94 per cent. In retrospect, the rally in the last two months of 2023 -- November and December -- was 8,365.33 points or 13.10 per cent in BSE SENSEX and 2,651.80 points or 13.90 per cent in NIFTY. To sum up, the rally in BSE SENSEX was 18.74 per cent of which 26.62 per cent was in the first 10 months and the balance 73.38 per cent in the remaining two months. For NIFTY, the rally in the first 10 months was 26.85 per cent while it was 73.15 per cent in the remaining two months. There were two big drivers for

facebook.com/indianewsaustralia

the skewed rally in the last two months or the last six weeks. The primary and foremost reason is the fact that the results of five state election results were declared on December 3. The stock market believes very strongly that with these election results, the government at the Centre is in a strong position and is likely to form the government post the general elections in April-May 2024. Second, the switch in the action of the FPIs who are dominant players in the markets has behaved. Prior to October, they were net short in the markets in the futures segment and were sellers in the cash markets as well. Over the last two months, they have turned net buyers in the futures and cash segments. They have gone from negative bias to positive bias and hence the pressure on buying in the markets has increased. This has fuelled the

rally where domestic institutions have been net buyers being forced to make fresh purchases on the basis of continued SIP money. The rally in 2023 has been a great one without a doubt. What will happen going forward is a million-dollar question. I believe we have steam left and will continue to do well over the next four to four and a half months till the elections are over. The important point to note would be that the speed of the rally or the momentum has to slow down and slow down considerably. The kind of returns witnessed particularly in the last six weeks to two months is certainly not sustainable. In conclusion, good times to continue but on a certainly lower scale hereon. Title: How long do I need to save to raise a home deposit? Have you been saving up to buy a home in Queensland, only to find out property prices have gone up and the savings is insufficient? Exclusive analysis PEXA’s new Buyer Deposits Report reveals the time taken to save for a deposit inQueensland now takes more than 5 years compared to less than 4 years in early 2021 (up 36.9%). This is mainly because house prices are shooting up, interest rates on loans are going higher, and banks are making it harder to get loans. The FY23 median home deposit

amount is now • $119,969 in NSW ($145,000 in Sydney), • $84,723 in Victoria ($94,000 in Melbourne) and • $78,143 in Queensland ($85,163 in Brisbane). PEXA's Head of Research, Mike Gill, pointed out that the struggle to save for a deposit has become much tougher, especially for first-home buyers. He mentioned that younger people trying to buy their first home are facing more difficulties getting into the housing market due to the increased time needed to save up.

The reasons behind the rising house prices in Queensland are things like more people wanting to buy homes, not enough houses available, and changes in the economy caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While the Queensland government has tried to help first-time buyers by offering grants and discounts, the gap between how much money people need for a deposit and how much

they can save remains a big problem. For many people in Queensland, saving enough money for a house seems harder than ever. The big question where do I even start? I am not a financial advisor or planner, but we at Lyra Homes can guide you to the right people to start the home ownership journey. Remember this is a long term game, and we need a long term mind set as well.

India factor in Cricket Australia’s Multicultural Action Plan By Dr Ashutosh Misra Australian demography has undergone a dramatic transformation in the last 15 years, with communities originating from South Asia, predominantly Indian, making a significant presence across Australian society. According to the Australian Census 2021, South Asians are amongst the fastest growing populations including 30% Australians born overseas. Of these 48.5% of the Australian population are multicultural and 4% (1.1 million) having a South Asia birth or descent. Since 2013, Indian migrants recorded a 128% rise (from 295,000 to 673,000), Sri Lankan 53% (86,000 to 132,000), Nepalese 392% (25,000-123,000), Pakistan 200% (30,000-90,000) and Bangladesh 82% (28,00051,000). This demographic transformation has not escaped Cricket Australia’s attention which launched the pathbreaking Multicultural Action Plan (MAP) 2023-2027 on 22 December informed by hundreds of hours of research and engagement across the community. The author was invited to do the internal launch before its public launch at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Supported by the Australian Government Legacy Fund, the MAP primarily aims at the South Asian community, wherein India is expected to be the key driver of growth in the coming years. Indian diaspora would soon overtake as the largest migrant community in Australia surpassing English, and the MAP strives to create a sense of belongingness and ownership amongst them. The MAP also highlights the 90,000 plus attendance during the India versus Pakistan match and the 85,000 plus attendance during the India versus Zimbabwe

match during the ICC T20 World Cup in 2022 in Australia. Indian-Australian cricketers namely Lisa Sthalekar and Allana King, along with Harmanpreet Kaur the Indian captain feature prominently in it. In addition, Usman Khawaja, the Pakistani origin cricketer holds a pivotal place for his inspirational struggle to make into the national squad, and for his Foundation’s Cricket Blast program for kids in schools and the community. The Multicultural Action Plan (MAP) hopes to create opportunities; break down barriers; build trust in relationships; and make a difference in the community. The rationale is simple: engage with the community which allows Cricket Australia to tap into the larger talent pool in the future, generate more participation and revenue from their participation, and enlarge its fan base and encourage community members to take on more leadership roles.

Of these, the cultural awareness and unconscious bias training is very well-thought and also critical for promoting greater understanding in Australian cricket of their unconscious bias and the cultural differences of the community and breaking down existing barriers in the game. Cricket Australia hopes to work with leading partners to develop and deliver training to all Cricket Australia staff and administrators. MAP is aiming for 100,000 South Asian registered participants with Australian cricket by 2027, and doubling the numbers of South Asian cultural background players in first class teams as well as Women Big Bash League and Men’s BBL and 2027 to 8%. Since 2007, only 2.3% South Asian made into tests, 5.2% in ODIs and 3.1% in T20 men's national team; and among women 5.3% in tests, 3.6% in ODIs and 3.8% in the T20 national team.

Cricket therefore, is becoming a vehicle of social cohesion and unity for all Australians, and championing diversity and inclusion at all levels.

MAP is expected to boost recruitment of more employees from the South Asian background, since only 2% South Asians were on Australian cricket boards, and executive teams in 2022, over 18% on the Cricket Australia payroll.

In the coming years, MAP will roll out the following ten key deliverables: bespoke social cricket programs, products and tournaments; community coach and voluntary leadership program; working with foundations and partners to enhance talent pathways; elite coach and umpire bursary scheme; South Asian monitoring and leadership program; cultural awareness and unconscious bias training; new multicultural Ambassador program; engaging with new media channels with positive storytelling; new cultural festivals and enhanced match experience; and more personalised engagement through enhanced data capability.

The author has been appointed by Queensland Cricket to lead its Multicultural Project which has already delivered very impressive outcomes. These include introducing the taped ball format to generate larger community involvement and inter-community engagements. Queensland Cricket’s successful taped ball format has also found a special mention in the MAP. In this format —the Multination

Cricket Australia has also created a specialised position of Multicultural Officers at the Queensland Cricket and Western Australian Cricket Association to introduce new initiatives and engagement programs and gather feedback for the Action Plan.

Cup 2023 involving India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Afghanistan; Rising Stars U-13 Junior Tournament and Corporate Cup involving corporate companies has created a vast constituency of cricket lovers who have been either missing out due to time and physical constraints or limited opportunities. Taped ball is rapidly becoming a sensation attracting more players from different age brackets into the code. Queensland Cricket also organised the Cricket Blast program using colours during the Holi festival which has been warmly embraced by kids and parents. Cricket outreach and engagement with the community during the Diwali festival at theme parks attended by thousands has now become a regular feature of the multicultural programs. In addition, with its innovative T20 Harmony Cup between Indian and Australian communities on 26 January, Goodwill Cup between South Asian players and Queensland Police, and the inaugural sevenweek long T20 Multination Challenger Trophy League comprising India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal — Queensland Cricket is already setting new benchmarks in community engagements and outreach, which is now underpinning the MAP. Undoubtedly, cricket continues to enrich Indo-Australian bilateral narrative and ties and the political leadership on both sides time and again very eloquently uses the appeal of the game to promote deeper understanding and friendship. In March 2023, Queensland Cricket led a delegation to Gujarat, spearheaded by its CEO Terry Svenson, deputy chair of the QC Board Ian Healy, former cricketer

Adam Dale and the author, to attend the fourth test match of the Border-Gavaskar series. Their visit coincided with the meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese at the majestic Modi stadium. This visit built Queensland Cricket’s contacts with senior BCCI officials such as Jay Shah- BCCI secretary, Roger Binny-BCCI president, Dhanraj Nathwanipresident Gujarat Cricket Association, Colonel Arvind Singh-COO, Gujarat Titans and several business leaders. The visit is expected to yield medium to long term cricketing exchanges of players, coaches, administrators and teams between the two sides in the coming years. Queensland Cricket is also in discussion with the Baroda Cricket Association to reach an understanding to this effect, and also expected to pick up the threads of discussion with the Karnataka Cricket Association. As Indo-Australian relations continue to thrive, cricket will continue to add ballast at various levels—sporting, community, diplomatic and also commercial. In this context, Cricket Australia’s Multicultural Action Plan is very timely in positioning the South Asian/Indian diaspora at the forefront of its strategy, which offers a historic opportunity for the Indian community champions to invoke their love of cricket for an creating an inclusive, diverse and multicultural society and a stronger Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. GenAI to assume 30% of YouTube to purge AI content that ‘realistically simulates’ deceased kids traditional marketing’s mundane tasks by 2027 policies to clamp down on such content. The platform said it will begin striking such content starting on January 16.

New Delhi, Jan 9 (IANS) Googleowned YouTube has announced to crack down on artificial intelligence (AI)-driven content that "realistically simulates" deceased minors or victims of deadly or well-documented major violent events describing their death or violence experienced. The company has updated its harassment and cyberbullying

The policy change is coming as some content creators have been using AI to recreate the likeness of deceased or missing children, where they give these child victims of high-profile cases a childlike "voice" to describe their deaths. A Washington Post report recently revealed that content creators have used AI to narrate the abduction and death of deceased or missing kids, including the two-year-old British James

Bulger.

"If your content violates this policy, we will remove the content and send you an email to let you know. If we can't verify that a link you post is safe, we may remove the link," said YouTube. "If you get three strikes within 90 days, your channel will be terminated," the company added. In September last year, Chinese short-video making platform TikTok introduced a feature to allow creators to label their AI-generated content, disclosing if they are posting synthetic or manipulated media that shows realistic scenes.

Microsoft’s new initiative aims to skill 100K Indian developers in latest AI tech

New Delhi, Jan 8 (IANS) Microsoft on Monday launched a new initiative -- AI Odyssey, that aims to skill 100,000 developers in India in the latest AI technologies and tools. The programme offers a comprehensive learning experience that helps developers acquire and demonstrate the relevant skills needed to execute critical projects using AI technologies that align with business goals and outcomes.

"AI is the future of innovation and India is leading the way with its tech talent. The Microsoft Applied Skills credential will help developers demonstrate their competence and creativity in the most in-demand AI skills and scenarios," Irina Ghose, Managing Director, Microsoft India, said in a statement. Through programmes like AI Odyssey, Microsoft is offering opportunities for developers to build solutions for India’s growth and showcase their talent to solve real-world problems. To participate in the programme, developers need to register on aka.ms/AIOdyssey and access the learning modules and resources. The month-long programme is open to all AI enthusiasts in India, regardless of experience level or

background. The program has two levels that participants need to complete by January 31. The first level of the programme educates participants on how to use Azure AI services to create and deploy AI solutions for different scenarios. This will give them access to useful resources, code samples, and guides to master practical AI skills. The second level of the programme challenges participants to prove their AI skills by completing an online assessment with interactive lab tasks that earn them Microsoft Applied Skills credentials, a new verifiable credential that validates their ability to solve real-world problems with AI.

In 2018, Musk appeared on comedian Joe Rogan’s podcast in which he smoked what Rogan said was marijuana and drank whiskey. The Pentagon, which has multiple contracts with Musk’s SpaceX, reportedly began looking into Musk’s marijuana use, because it’s prohibited for someone with a government security clearance. “After that one puff with Rogan, I agreed, at NASA’s request, to do 3 years of random drug testing,” Musk said in his post on Sunday. “Not even trace quantities were found of any drugs or alcohol,” he added.

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS) Generative AI (GenAI) is likely to assume 30 per cent of traditional marketing's mundane tasks by 2027 in the Asia-Pacific region excluding Japan, a new report has shown. GenAI will take over jobs like SEO, content and website optimisation, customer data analysis, segmentation, lead scoring, and hyper-personalisation, according to an IDC report. About 37.8 per cent of chief marketing officers (CMOs) indicated that they have already begun implementing GenAI technologies. Also, 51 per cent of CMOs highlighted that their top business objective in the next 12 months is to improve lead generation through improved quality of content marketing. Cybercriminals find new way to access Google accounts without password: Report be compromised due to a flaw in cookies, which websites and browsers use to track users and improve their efficiency and usability.

New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS) Researchers have uncovered a hack that lets hackers access people's Google accounts without needing their passwords. According to the cybersecurity company CloudSEK, a new type of malware that uses third-party cookies to gain unauthorised access to people's private data is already being actively tested by hacking groups. The exploit was first discovered in October 2023, when a hacker posted about it on a Telegram channel. "In October 2023, PRISMA, a developer, uncovered a critical exploit that allows the generation of persistent Google cookies through token manipulation. This exploit enables continuous access to Google services, even after a user's password reset," said Pavan Karthick M, a threat intelligence researcher at CloudSEK. The researchers identified the exploit's root at an undocumented Google Oauth endpoint named "MultiLogin".The post described how accounts could

Google authentication cookies allow users to access their accounts without constantly entering their login information; however, hackers discovered a way to retrieve these cookies in order to circumvent two-factor authentication. According to the Independent, the Chrome web browser is presently in the process of cracking down on third-party cookies. “We routinely upgrade our defences against such techniques and to secure users who fall victim to malware. In this instance, Google has taken action to secure any compromised accounts detected,” Google was quoted as saying. “Users should continually take steps to remove any malware from their computer, and we recommend turning on Enhanced Safe Browsing in Chrome to protect against phishing and malware downloads,” it added. Further, Karthick M mentioned that this highlights the necessity for continuous monitoring of both technical vulnerabilities and human intelligence sources to stay ahead of emerging cyber threats.

water contains Scientists find 35 previously Bottled thousands of previously unknown species of bacteria unknown nanoplastics: Study from patients with a wide range of medical conditions.

London, Jan 8 (IANS) A team of scientists has discovered 35 new species of bacteria, some of which can cause infections in humans. The team from the University of Basel and the University Hospital Basel in Switzerland has been collecting and analysing patient samples containing such unknown germs since 2014. Overall, the team analysed 61 unknown bacterial pathogens found in blood or tissue samples

Conventional laboratory methods, such as mass spectroscopy or sequencing a small part of the bacterial genome, had failed to produce results for all these isolates. That is why the researchers sequenced the complete genetic material of the bacteria using a method that has only been available for a few years. They then compared the identified genome sequences with known strains in an online tool. Out of 61 analysed bacteria, 35 were previously unknown. The researchers classified the remaining 26 strains as hard to identify -- either their genome sequences had only been added

to databases recently or a correct taxonomic description of the pathogens had only been created a very short time ago. An evaluation of the patient data showed that seven out of the 35 new strains were clinically relevant, meaning that they can cause bacterial infections in humans. "Such direct links between newly identified species of bacteria and their clinical relevance have rarely been published in the past," said microbiologist Dr. Daniel Goldenberger from the varsity. Most of the newly identified species belong to the Corynebacterium and Schaalia genera, both gram-positive bacilli.

Harvard’s robotic wearable device improves walking for people with Parkinson’s a neurodegenerative disorder that affects more than nine million people globally. When individuals with Parkinson’s disease freeze, they suddenly lose the ability to move their feet, often mid-stride, resulting in a series of staccato stutter steps that get shorter until the person stops altogether. According to the study published in the journal Nature Medicine, the robotic garment, worn around the hips and thighs, gives a gentle push to the hips as the leg swings, helping the patient achieve a longer stride. San Francisco, Jan 7 (IANS) Researchers from Harvard and Boston University have used a soft, wearable robot to help a person living with Parkinson’s walk without freezing. As explained by the researchers, freezing is one of the most common and debilitating symptoms of Parkinson’s disease,

“We found that just a small amount of mechanical assistance from our soft robotic apparel delivered instantaneous effects and consistently improved walking across a range of conditions for the individual in our study,” said Conor Walsh, co-corresponding author of the study. The researchers spent six months

working with a 73-year-old man with Parkinson’s disease, who -- despite using both surgical and pharmacologic treatments -- endured substantial and incapacitating freezing episodes more than 10 times a day, causing him to fall frequently. After wearing the device, the patient was able to walk without any freezing indoors and with only occasional episodes outdoors. He was also able to walk and talk without freezing, a rarity without the device, the researchers noted. "The suit helps me take longer steps and when it is not active, I notice I drag my feet much more. It has really helped me, and I feel it is a positive step forward. It could help me to walk longer and maintain the quality of my life," the participant told researchers. In addition, the researchers mentioned that the device could also be used to better understand the mechanisms of gait freezing, which is poorly understood.

High-fat diets can impair immune, intestinal & brain health: Study 40 per cent of the calories came from fat. Then, they looked not only at the microbiome, but also at genetic changes in all four parts of the intestines.

New York, Jan 4 (IANS) Highfat diets affect genes linked not only to obesity, colon cancer and irritable bowels, but also to the immune system, brain function, according to a study in mouse models. Researchers at the University of California - Riverside fed mice three different diets over the course of 24 weeks where at least

New York, Jan 9 (IANS) Bottled water contains tens of thousands of identifiable fragments as well as previously unknown nanoplastics in each container, posing significant health risk, finds a study. In recent years, there has been rising concern that tiny particles known as microplastics are showing up basically everywhere on Earth -- from polar ice to soil, drinking water and food. However, in the study, published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the researchers focussed on

The study, reported in a paper in the journal Scientific Reports, documents the many impacts of high-fat diets. It showed major changes in genes related to fat metabolism and the composition of gut bacteria, as well as changes in genes regulating susceptibility to infectious diseases.

They found that on average, a litre contained some 240,000 detectable plastic fragments -- 10 to 100 times greater than previous estimates, which were based mainly on larger sizes. Nanoplastics are so tiny that, unlike microplastics, they can pass through intestines and lungs directly into the bloodstream and travel from there to organs including the heart and brain. They can invade individual cells, and cross through the placenta to the bodies of unborn babies.

Early risers at risk of developing eating disorder: Study Published in JAMA Network Open, the study showed anorexia nervosa is based on rising early, unlike many other disorders that tend to be evening-based such as depression, binge eating disorder and schizophrenia.

New York, Jan 6(IANS) Being an early riser could increase the risk for having anorexia nervosa -- an eating disorder characterised by low weight, food restriction, body image disturbance, fear of gaining weight. The study found that having anorexia nervosa could lead to an earlier wake time. It also revealed a link between anorexia nervosa and insomnia risk.

Previous research has suggested a possible connection between eating disorders and the body’s internal clock, or circadian clock, which controls a wide range of biological functions such as sleep and affects nearly every organ in the body. In the new study, an international team of researchers led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), found a two-way association between genes associated with anorexia nervosa and genes associated with morning chronotype (waking early and going to bed early).

protein. "Word on the street is that plantbased diets are better for you, and in many cases that's true. However, a diet high in fat, even from a plant, is one case where it's just not true," said Frances Sladek, a cell biology professor at the varsity.

For the first time, the team from the Columbia University in the US could count and identify these minute particles in bottled water using newly-refined technology.

New York, Jan 6 (IANS) Diagnosing lung cancer could become as easy as inhaling nanoparticle sensors and then taking a urine test that reveals whether a tumour is present, according to a Indian-origin engineer at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US. The new diagnostic is based on nanosensors that can be delivered by an inhaler or a nebulizer.

This approach could potentially replace or supplement the current gold standard for diagnosing lung cancer, lowdose computed tomography (CT). It could have an especially significant impact in low- and middle-income countries that don’t have widespread availability of CT scanners, according to the research published in the journal Science Advances. “Around the world, cancer is going to become more and more prevalent in low- and middleincome countries.

ARTS & CULTURE

A space in time, Kasauli Art Loving the arts, the Centre and those who never left corporate way She was not very clear about what the late artist Vivan Sundaram expected when he asked her to write a book on the Kasauli Art Centre. But certain things were lucid -- she would not write a definite history, it would imbibe the fact that people from all across came here, leaving a part of them at the centre. Yes, there would be voices of many, but no paraphrasing and the author would have her space -- she would transcend genres, and she would wander to absorb the essence of many minds

Dhanoa tells IANS that she knew most of the work that had to be done by meeting and interviewing participating artists, that the centre did not exist in isolation and that the people who participated, brought different parts of themselves with them there. “I have brought in Baroda, Mumbai and other spaces. The Centre existed in the times before liberalization, before the many art galleries started dotting major Indian cities.” By Sukant Deepak

he was not very clear about what the late artist Vivan Sundaram expected when he asked her to write a book on the Kasauli Art Centre. But certain things were lucid -- she would not write a definite history, it would imbibe the fact that people from all across came here, leaving a part of them at the centre. Yes, there would be voices of many, but no paraphrasing and the author would have her space -she would transcend genres, and she would wander to absorb the essence of many minds. The first thing that hits about author Belinder Dhanoa’s ‘Kasauli Art Centre, 1976-1991’, set up at Ivy Lodge in Kasauli that artists Vivan and Navina Sundaram inherited from their mother, Indira SherGil, in 1975, published brilliantly by Tulika Books is the fact that it is one of the best-designed books of 2023. One enters the book with caution, first taking in the images of some of the masters like Nilima Sheikh, Gulammohammed Sheikh,

Bhupen Khakhar, Geetanjali Shree and Anuradha Kapur who worked and stayed at the Ivy Lodge. There are families, artists are working in the outdoors in rhythm/ unrhythm, and there are images of long discussions in the night, of sitting around, children playing and those completely unaware of the camera following them. Sometimes a direct gaze is frozen, and many times eyes focus on nothingness. Dhanoa, a writer of fiction and nonfiction, with training in Visual and Cultural Studies who teaches Literary Art/Creative Writing at the Ambedkar University Delhi, through a gripping narrative captures the many concerns of those times -- the Vietnam War, and interdisciplinary interactions on the rise of fundamentalist ideas. Multiple schools of art, and thought come together, and letters of artists who were part of the residencies provide a glimpse of how the shared space opened many chasms for them. How the space found a permanent spot inside them.

Adding that it was paramount to bring to light the critique and dialogue within the artists’ community of that time, the author stresses the fact that the book had to have a lot of voices. “So much is from memory, which may not be a very reliable source, nevertheless it lends many new dimensions when recounted.” While she managed to put together the book in a year, it took much longer to source photographs, and for the actual production. Interestingly, the Sher-Gil Sundaram Arts Foundation is reviving the Centre which will invite artists, hold workshops and give grants shortly. “While it might be different as we live in a time with other concerns, there will be memories on the wall. I clearly remember one of the artists telling me -- ‘A very intense aspect of the Centre was the fact that you could think and discuss issues that you could give only moments to in your everyday life. It was a different space in time there.’”

popular festivals.

hile stressing that not just corporates, but everyone has a responsibility towards the arts, Sunil Kant Munjal, the Founder Patron of Serendipity Arts Festival (SAF), held annually in Goa feels that though the government has an important role in promotion of the arts, it is high time corporates came forward to play theirs.

Jay Shah, Vice-President -Cultural Outreach of the brand, stresses the return to the brand in terms of value is when people recognise that they have been subtle.

W

"Considering they have a larger responsibility in society, thus their roles towards the arts, too, becomes increased," he tells IANS during the recently concluded SAF. Talk to him about deciding on a non-metro destination for the festival, and he is clear that the effort was not to 'move away' from anywhere, in fact, Goa was chosen owing to its unique microculture. "People from across the country have moved and settled here. Not to mention, our partnership with the Goa government has been excellent. If you have noticed, most of the venues are heritage buildings." Even as getting a hotel room in Panjim becomes a struggle during the festival days, the patron smiles, "Yes, the festival has helped the local economy, bringing in tourism. The general population sees the festival as their own which is an achievement." The Chairman of Hero Enterprises, admits that it has been an intentional move not to brand his company at SAF. "It is deliberate as we do not want to turn this into a corporate programme." "SAF is held with the sole aim of promoting the arts and the access to art. If we start branding our company, it takes away many things from the festival. We have invited other corporates to come. Our message is clear -- arts need patronage." Mahindra, which holds several festivals across the country at different times including the popular 'Kabira Festival', 'Santatkada Festival', 'Blues Festival', 'Roots Festival', 'Percussion Festival', and 'Excellence in Theatre Awards', and just prefixes 'Mahindra' before each one, ensures that the brand's products are not promoted in any way at these

"And that comes back in many ways. Frankly, with all these festivals, we want the audience to focus only on art and culture and do not want the festival to be lost just because we want brand exposure. I firmly believe that if we start exposing our brands here, the same will bring a negative value," he says. About how these festivals, many held in non-metro cities, are accelerating the growth of the local economy, Shah cites, "As soon as we put out the announcement for the 'Kabira Festival', our partner hotels sold out in minutes. Many other hotels witnessed a huge rush in bookings. And it is not just to do with the economy. We also do a lot of community outreach and hold workshops with children. Schools also come and perform. There are always some local names." Shah feels it is important to look beyond metros but each destination is not a draw of lot. Stressing that locations are decided strategically, he cites an example, "Realising that we did not have a festival in the South, Bangalore became a destination. Also, to cater to Generation Z, Mahindra got into rock and percussion." For someone like Sanjoy Roy, Managing Director of Teamwork Arts, which produces more than 25 performing arts, visual arts, and literary festivals across 40 cities, including the famed Jaipur Literature Festival ( JLF), the effort is to create more opportunities and create value for heritage and local economy. Believing that metros are not festival cities, Roy who is set to start festivals in Madurai, Hampi, and Bengal now says, "Take the example of Varanasi, where we produce the 'Mahindra Kabira Festival'. It is a festival city which has heritage and history. In such cities, people quickly 'adopt' the festival as their own, and the latter keeps reinventing itself, which is very interesting. The effort is to ensure that we work with the locals and bring people who otherwise won't have a platform."

is advisable to see a skin specialist for a comprehensive assessment and individualised treatment recommendations if dry skin is severe or continues." Here are tips one can follow to help relieve dry skin, according to Dr. Mittal: Hydrate from the inside: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to ensure your body stays hydrated. This helps keep your skin moisturized from the inside out.

By N. Lothungbeni Humtsoe

T

his New Year, unlock the secrets to dewy, hydrated skin. Wave goodbye to dryness as you embark on a journey of intense hydration, ensuring your skin is well-prepared to face the challenges of the upcoming year. Almost everyone experiences dry skin when the weather cools off. Dry skin caused by dehydration is a common concern, particularly in the winter when the air is typically drier. “The most common difference is that dehydrated skin has symptoms like dull or withered skin, itching, and a burning feeling in the eyes, whereas dry skin experiences symptoms like itching, dryness, a white coating, and pain. Skin dryness manifests as dark circles, sensitivity to light, redness, edoema, scaly skin, fine lines, and wrinkles,” says Dr. Jatin Mittal, Cosmetologist, Skin Expert and Co-founder at Abhivrit Aesthetics, New Delhi. Now let’s understand what causes dehydrated skin. During the winter months, several elements contribute to this condition such as: Low Humidity: Compared to warm air, cold air retains less moisture. Wintertime brings lower humidity levels and drier air. The skin may lose moisture more quickly as a result of this low humidity. Low Temperatures: The skin's ability to act as a barrier can be weakened by exposure to low temperatures. Dryness can result from damage to the skin's outer layer, which makes it easier for moisture to exit. Indoor Heating: Dry skin may be exacerbated by indoor heating systems, such as space heaters

and central heating. These systems frequently lower the interior humidity, which results in a setting that further dehydrates the skin. Hot Baths and Showers: Although they may feel soothing in the winter, hot baths and showers can deplete the skin of its natural oils. The lipid membranes in the skin may be damaged by hot water, increasing moisture loss. Lack of Moisturization: Dehydration can result from applying moisturisers insufficiently or from using products that are inappropriate for your skin type. Moisturisers aid in retaining moisture and fortifying the skin's barrier. Age: The natural oil production in the skin decreases with age, leaving the skin more vulnerable to dryness. This can get worse when it's wintertime. Medical Conditions: Psoriasis and eczema are two examples of illnesses that can aggravate dry skin. Furthermore, negative effects from drugs or medical procedures could dehydrate the skin. Environmental Factors: Dry skin can also be caused by other environmental factors including wind and sun exposure. The natural oils on the skin can be removed by wind, and skin damage can result from exposure to UV radiation. Dr. Mittal advises, "It's important to remember that a number of these factors can contribute to dry skin in some people. A multimodal strategy is typically necessary to address dry skin, encompassing lifestyle modifications, appropriate skincare practices, and in certain instances, medical intervention. It

Limit hot showers: Hot showers and baths can strip away the oils in the skin. Reducing the temperature in showers and baths is a good idea, and try to limit your time in the shower. Avoid soaps that include sodium lauryl sulfate if possible: It's one of the ingredients that removes natural oils from the skin. I advise staying away from soaps that create a lot of foam. Moisturize Regularly: To seal in moisture, use a thick, nourishing moisturiser on damp skin. Keep an eye on products that have ceramides, shea butter, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid. Before using your moisturiser, think about using an oil or serum that provides moisture. This may provide an additional layer of dampness. Use a fragrancefree moisturiser; creams work better than lotions. Dr. Mittal recommends, “Ceramidecontaining creams are far superior. The natural component of the skin barrier that stops water loss is ceramides” Select the correct products: Look for skincare items that are made especially for skin types that are sensitive or dry. Products with fragrances or alcohol should be avoided as they might be drying. Remain consistent: When it comes to skincare, consistency is essential. Create a schedule and follow it. Be patient and give your skin some time to adjust since results might not be seen right away. "If your skin issues persist or worsen, it's advisable to consult with a skin specialist for personalized advice and treatment options. They can help identify any underlying causes and recommend products tailored to your skin type," concludes Dr. Mittal.

Matthew Perry was reportedly abusive to women including exfiancee Molly Hurwitz Los Angeles, Jan 11 (IANS) Hollywood star Matthew Perry was reportedly abusive to several women before his death, including his ex-fiancee, Molly Hurwitz. According to a new report, the 'Friends' alum "hurled table" at his ex and "threw live-in sober companion against wall." Bringing up the claim was The Daily Mail. Sources close to the late actor told the outlet that he "threw a coffee table" at Molly in 2021 after she questioned him about cheating, reports aceshowbiz.com. Perry and Hurwitz started dating in 2018 and got engaged in November 2020. However, they reportedly called it off amid rumours that he was reportedly flirting with then-19-year-old

Kate Haralson on the dating app Raya. The sources begged to differ, telling the publication that Hurwitz actually broke up with Perry in February 2021 after having a "huge fight" on Valentine's Day. The exes were arguing after she found out that he purchased a romantic gift for someone else he also met on Raya. "He threw a coffee table at her and told her that she was crazy," the source claimed to the outlet. "He hated that she dumped him and he had terrible abandonment issues." The Daily Mail also reported that Perry allegedly pushed his live-in sober companion, Morgan Moses, into a wall and "threw her onto a bed" in March 2022 during an alleged "meltdown."
