MAKE IN INDIA
MAKE IN INDIA
As world economies restart their engines in a bid to regain lost ground due to the Covid-19 pandemic, India too shows signs of economic buoyancy and promise. India’s Make in India initiative holds a key to the global economic revival, something that should interest Australian government ministries, corporate sector, entrepreneurs, institutions seeking R&D collaborations and Australia Inc in general, among others. India assumes greater importance as several major world economies including American, Japanese, German, British and South Korean look to move out and diversify their businesses from China. India has jumped to 63rd rank in the World Bank’s Ease of Development 2020 report, and has also been ranked as the 9th largest recipient of Foreign Direct Investment destinations in 2019 by the World Investment Report 2020 of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Micron’s Rs 22,500 cr plant to set a benchmark for India’s chip India begins chip journey in just 15 months, journey: Ashwini Vaishnaw
Micron a beacon to all investors: MoS IT manufacturing, he said that in 2014, the country had zero mobile export and today, we are exporting Apple and Samsung smartphones’ worth Rs 1 lakh crore.
New Delhi, Sep 25 (IANS) In just 15 months’ time, India has seen the construction of its first-ever semiconductor plant, received more manufacturing proposals along with 8 chip designing startups now operational in the country, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and IT, said on Monday. Speaking to IANS, the Minister said that semiconductor manufacturing -- which is at the frontier of engineering and science/technology and a very high-level area -- opportunities in the country are now immense and investments in this field will go to states that respond fast while creating an enabling environment, infrastructure and policies. Giving an example of mobile
“The sheer transformation in the electronics sector is the reason our Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes in India becoming a semiconductor nation,” said Chandrasekhar. In 2014, the country used to import 82 per cent mobile phones and now, 100 per cent smartphones are being manufactured/assembled here. “Similarly, in the near future, we will see more positive data on semiconductors as we begin the journey with the Micron plant. I have no doubt that the state-of-the-art plant in Sanand, Gujarat, will become a beacon to all investors, manufacturers and participants in the global semiconductor ecosystem,” Chandrasekhar told IANS. The chip for ISRO-created GPS navigation system called NavIC -now part of Apple iPhone 15 Pro series -- has been designed by
Bengaluru-based Accord Software and Systems.
New Delhi, Sep 15 (IANS) Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday urged the country’s engineers to consider the German model of specialisation and certification in specific areas in order to accelerate growth in innovation. Addressing the technocrats on Engineers Day, the minister pointed out that India's National Education Policy, introduced in 2020, has opened doors for lateral changes in education, allowing students to explore diverse fields midstream. “This flexibility will lead to a more skilled and diverse workforce,” he observed.

The Minister said that the government would then explore reciprocal actions based on this research study to ensure a level playing field for Indian engineers and businesses. He exhorted the engineering community to achieve the USD100 billion export target in engineering services, design, construction, and R&D by 2030. Addressing the ‘Global Services Export Conclave on Design, Engineering, Construction, R&D and Environmental Services: Sustainable Energy, Transportation, and Infrastructure', Goyal highlighted India's growing global stature,
The Micron plant at Sanand will work as a foundational industry, in order to create such foundational industries across the country, the minister emphasised.
They've built more than a million NAVIC IC chips using advanced 28-nanometer technology. The government will soon make it a “standard practice that all devices using GPS technology should have NAVIC-powered chipsets or NAVIC chips inside”. “When you look at the IT PLI scheme this time, it includes incentives for system designers and manufacturers who incorporate Indian-designed chips into their products,” said Chandrasekhar. The first India-made chip from the Rs 22,500 crore Micron plant is likely to arrive in December 2024. The Assembly, Test, Marking and Packaging (ATMP) of the company is being set up on 93 acres in Sanand GIDC-II industrial estate and is expected to be commissioned within 18 months. The facility will focus on transforming wafers into Ball Grid Array (BGA) – integrated circuit packages, memory modules and solid-state drives.
Piyush Goyal backs German model of specialisation for engineers in India Goyal also called upon the Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC) and the Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) to conduct a study on international practices that restrict the participation of Indian engineering firms in global projects.
railways, aviation and multiple other areas where progress is visible," Vaishnaw emphasised.
Sanand (Gujarat), Sep 23 (IANS) Global chip manufacturers have realised India’s potential and US-based Micron Technology breaking grounds for its Rs 22,500 crore facility here will set a benchmark for our semiconductor journey, Union IT and Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told IANS on Saturday. Saying that the first 'Make in India' chip from Micron’s plant is most likely to come in December 2024, the minister said the pace at which Micron kicked off work on the Sanand project is highly commendable. "This plant sets a major milestone for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of making India a semiconductor hub — the way the country has achieved in sectors like mobile, electronics, defense,
He urged Indian companies to expand globally, capturing new markets and leveraging India's abundant talent pool of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) graduates to become leading global companies in their sectors. Regarding India's stance on global trade, Goyal emphasised the country's commitment to fair and balanced Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations. He emphasised that India's approach involves extensive consultations with stakeholders to ensure equitable deals that benefit the nation's businesses, professionals, and MSMEs. The aim is to enter into an FTA which is a win-win for both countries, he added.

The facility will focus on transforming wafers into Ball Grid Array (BGA) – integrated circuit packages, memory modules and solid-state drives. According to the minister, the government has also received a couple of more semiconductor manufacturing proposals and an announcement will be made soon. "Chips today are an integral part of our lives. The semiconductor manufacturing is also going to help the IT hardware PLI 2.0 in a very big way because this PLI has special incentives for chips which are manufactured in India," Vaishnaw told IANS.
