Re-use of treated wastewater in agricultural production schemes in Southern Spain

Water scarcity and agriculture A comprenhensive assessment of Water Management in agriculture: Que s tio n: Is there enough land, water, and human capacity to produce food for a growing population over the next 50 years—or will we “run out” of water? The C o m p re he ns iv e As s e s s m e nt’s ans w e r: It is possible to produce the food—but it is probable that today’s food production and environmental trends, if continued, will lead to crises in many parts of the world. Only if we act to improve water use in agriculture will we meet the acute freshwater challenges facing humankind over the coming 50 years. Que s tio n: Which efforts are necessary to provide fresh water ? The C o m p re he ns iv e As s e s s m e nt’s ans w e r: The efforts depend on the technology used: 1.Seawater desalination: energy demand 7 – 12 kWh/m³, generation of brines with high salt concentration (waste disposal problem!), usually large centralised units, 2.Decentralised membrane technology: energy demand <1 … 3 kWh/m³, generation of surplus sludge with high organic matter and nutrient content (fertiliser + soil conditioner!), tailor made systems.

TREAT&USE project overview – Concept

TREAT&USE system: • Safe and economic wastewater treatment • Direct use of water and nutrients • Irrigation in agriculture (fertigation) • Minimal O&M costs • Based on the results of PURATREAT and WACOSYS

TREAT&USE project overview – Concept PURATREAT project:

WACOSYS project:

• Development of low energy MBR prototypes ( -90%)

• Develop, test and optimize a wastewater irrigation system

• Focused on Southern Mediterranean countries (water stress)

• Combined sensor-detector dosage system

• Comparison of three leading membrane technologies

• Monitoring, control and distribution units • Dosing of the wastewater according to the crop demand • Short rotation plantations (Poplars)

TREAT&USE project overview – Objectives

Overall objectives: • Provide a safe, technological solution for reusing treated wastewater in agricultural production

• Taking advantage of the huge potential of wastewater resources in water scarce regions in the Mediterranean Basin for fertigation purposes • Development of an approach which allows 100% reuse of wastewater and a 70% recovery of nutrients • Upscale MBR and adapt it to requirements of municipal wastewater (tailor made effluent) • Irrigation on food crops • Pre-commercial prototype unit

The NaWaTech project 窶「 Natural water systems and treatment technologies to cope with water shortages in urbanized areas in India. 窶「 Projects call ENV.2012.6.6-1: EU (ENV.2012.6.6-1) 窶的ndia (DST) cooperation in water technology and management. The planned activities support the objectives of the Strategic Forum for International Science and Technology Cooperation (SFIC). 窶「 Aims at maximizing the exploitation of natural and compact technical systems and processes for the effective management of municipal water resources of water supply and sanitation services, and of the municipal water cycle as a whole in urbanized areas of India.

NaWaTech Objetives The specific objectives of NaWaTech are:  To assess the technical, financial and environmental potential of natural water treatment technologies to cope with water shortages in urbanised areas in India.  To enhance the natural water treatment systems for the production of recycled water to supplement water sources considering extreme climatic conditions and highly varying pollutions loads.  To disseminate, exploit, and ensure the take-up in practice and mainstreaming of NaWaTech activities and outputs by key stakeholders.  To benefit Indian and European SMEs in the water sector, by supporting the development of a local market forinnovative water treatment technologies, and training the SMEs on the NaWaTech approach.  To create an enabling environment in order to allow the take-up in practice and mainstreaming of the results.  To establish foundations of a long-term cooperation between EU and India in water technologies.
