Dozens of high-level buyers and major retailers detailed innovative strategies, trending needs and a few pain points with more than 100 independent brand professionals poised to scale their wholesale operations. BeautyX courses, panels and expert dialogs educated, informed and inspired brand founders to reach for new solutions and to initiate the start of conversations that would carry on well past the duration of the event.

Dallas

May 15–16, 2019 A spring forward for independent beauty in the hub of the booming southern beauty market. Big D was the place for big dreams at IBE’s most southern and genteel show. With the opportunity for lengthy interactions and face-to-face feedback from buyers, the third annual Dallas show lived up to its dual reputation for fostering the growth of new exhibitors and introducing established brands to new opportunities beyond the buzz of the east and west coast.

The Rise of Beauty

RETAIL SUMMIT MAY 13–14, 2019 | DALLAS As mass fashion outlets falter, today’s beauty consumer is the savior for multiple retailers, from drugstores to prestige department stores. Upwards of 40 speakers tracked and illuminated the breakthrough developments in today’s retail channels. A who’s who of buyers, led by Sephora Chief Merchandising Officer Artemis Patrick, powered an information exchange exclusive to BeautyX, the only retail knowledge network for beauty entrepreneurs. The governing principles

behind retail success from e-commerce to the spa channel were established in courses that defined terminology, analyzed in expert panels, and explored in individual case studies— the essential framework of each summit’s 360-degree core curriculum.

New sun-care company Tropic Labs, plant-based adaptogen deodorant product specialist Field Botanicals and clean clinical skincare brand Restorsea competed live on stage in a mock trade-show setting to pitch their brands to a trio of spa and retail executives. In their efforts to win over the executives, the brands were coached by expert merchant Kelly St. John, Oyl + Water founder Rachel Roberts and strategic growth consultant Joanie Taylor. Brand founders Morgan Ioffe (Tropic), Jennifer Tinsley (Field) and Patti Pao (Restorsea) worked with their advisors to craft their pitches during the three weeks leading up to the BeautyX Retail Summit. They each were given the chance to win over The Spa at the Joule spa director Virginia Acosta, Neiman Marcus beauty buyer Kim D’Angelo and Dermstore vice president of marketing Dawn Serpa. Restorsea’s clean sweep in a tight three-way finale won Pao valuable next-level meetings with the retailers and a free ticket to a BeautyX Summit of her choice. 8 T H E A N T H O L O G Y O F I N D E P E N D E N T B E A U T Y | V O L U M E V, I S S U E 3 | D A L L A S 2 019

#IBELA2019 IBE Dallas proved to be as much a world's fair for the future of beauty as a platform for the many facets of the evolving indie beauty segment. Among the 70 brands that packed close to 20,000 square feet at the stylish Sixty Five Hundred venue were new startups Bevara Skin, Lipstuk and Sanara, and indie stalwarts Honey Belle, Erbaviva and Honestly pHresh. Only in Dallas, and only at Indie Beauty Expo, could heat-seeking retailers and avid beauty shoppers find a color-filled emporium featuring an eclectic array of self-care sex toys and a fat-busting laser. More than 200 buyers from an extensive range of retailers, including Neiman Marcus, Ulta Beauty, Credo, Walgreens, Dillard’s, Feelunique, Equinox, Kohl’s, Sally Beauty, Amazon, Revolve and Whole Foods Market, checked them out to determine what roles they could play in increasingly amorphous beauty assortments touching upon everything from pain relief to smelly feet.

The retail beauty aisle is expanding, and so are the product lines of independent innovators. The press welcomed IBE’s return to Dallas, with ABC’s Good Morning Texas whipping up consumer interest with a pre-show selection of eye-catching brand offerings. PaperCity Magazine, D Magazine, and Dallas City Paper followed suit, while notable influencers (Natch Beaut among them) self-ied and live-cammed their way through the show floor. It all resulted in the type of southern hospitality, beauty love fest that is the hallmark of all IBE Dallas events. 13

SANAR A Sanara is a plant-based skincare line created out of the founder's skincare needs. After 15 years of suffering from psoriasis Rebekah, the founder, decided to take skincare into her own hands, literally. It was after a bad outbreak that Rebekah began researching and creating her own skincare. Her kitchen became her test lab and Sanara was born. It's taken 2 years to take Rebekah’s passion for plant-based skincare to create her mission. Sanara is rooted in the Spanish word sanar which means, ‘to heal’ and acts as her beacon in the ingredients she chooses and the products she creates. Rebekah through Sanara wanted to further pay homage to her Latin roots by sharing the beauty of Latin America and celebrating indigenous Latin American botanicals in all the products she creates. sanaraskincare.com DAL L AS

First appearing in fashion, the cheery hue is infiltrating the beauty, wellness and sexual health sectors to perk up products and provide a welcome alternative to ubiquitous blush.

common, sprinkling a little CBD into a formula is no longer sufficient to generate buzz. Indie beauty and wellness brands are supersizing their CBD content in body oils, tinctures and hair tonics to ensure consumers feel the effects of the popular plant medicine molecule.

REMOVAL REIMAGINED Taking off makeup is a monotonous task that beauty enthusiasts endure on a daily basis (unless they doze off before they get to it). Brands are injecting excitement into the process with new textures and formats that aren’t your average wipes and washes.

SNOOZE FEST The perils of insufficient sleep are enough to, well, keep you up at night. In their quests for a sound slumber, many sleepdeprived peeps avoid prescription drugs that can cause a litany of adverse side effects. Indie beauty and wellness brands are creating natural sleep solutions to help everyone get the shuteye they deserve.

MAJOR LASERS & MAGIC WANDS Various forms of beauty-boosting technology were on display at IBE Dallas, from high-powered machines so big they take up a room to tools small enough to be held in your hand.

BETTER BODY CARE Beauty brands are turning up the quality dial on bodycare products to supply benefits often associated with facial care for the area below the chin. They’re wooing customers beginning to wake up to the fact that much of what they’ve slathered on their body is subpar and show a willingness to spend more for their lower parts. 33 T H E A N T H O L O G Y O F I N D E P E N D E N T B E A U T Y | V O L U M E V, I S S U E 3 | D A L L A S 2 019

BLAZING HOT SUN CARE In the first quarter of this year, The NPD Group reports sunscreen sales were on fire, rising 22%. The growth of self-tanner wasn’t far behind, and sales in the product category lifted 20%. Certainly, interest in sun protection is strong. Indie brands are reacting to the strong interest by unleashing a spate of mineral SPF items and self-tanners.

SHEET MASK SHAKEUPS Do you even remember life before sheet masks? Since their debut a few years ago, this versatile skin solution has become a best selling product category and beauty regimen staple. Fickle beauty consumers are always on the hunt for what’s new, so sheet mask makers have pushed innovation by adding new and interesting ingredients, introducing forward-thinking formats and finding new body parts to sheet treat.

SPARKLY STUFF The minimal movement has splashed the beauty industry with black and white. There’s nothing wrong with black and white, but sometimes indulging the senses with glitter and glam is extremely satisfying. Brands are acknowledging the pine for shine and enhancing their products with sparkle.

Make Room for Uplink Live!

Uplink Live marks a major expansion for IBE New York, and comes at a time of tremendous growth and change for the trade show. In Dallas, Indie Beauty Media Group announced a new way to connect the backend of the beauty industry with front-end entrepreneurs at a new event called Uplink Live, which will run August 21 to 22 inside Indie Beauty Expo New York. Uplink Live will be a one-stop shop for emerging brands to discover vendors such as public relations agencies, manufacturers and logistics firms aiming to serve the burgeoning independent beauty segment. “As soon as we see an unmet need for beauty entrepreneurs, we work to fill it, says Indie Beauty Media Group co-founder Nader Naeymi-Rad. IBMG anticipates that around 50 exhibitors will take part in Uplink Live, and more

than a dozen have signed up to date, including Solescence, Revenue of Inspiration, Croda, On Air Direct, Aptar, U&I Worldwide, Roberts Beauty, Sentient Technologies, and Floratech. IBMG also announced a new home for IBE NY at Pier 94, its largest venue yet, for the upcoming fifth anniversary of the trade show in Manhattan. SHOP INDIE, the consumer-facing portion of IBE events, will no longer be included in the trade show in order to provide two full days of TRADE INDIE, the portion of the trade show dedicated to beauty industry insiders.
