#IBELA2019 When nearly 200 independently-owned brands gather in a 45,000 square-foot showroom, the place bursts with color, ingenuity and the collective energy of buyers seeking new and creative products. More than 400 buyers from household names such as Sephora, Ulta Beauty, Whole Foods, Goop, The Detox Market and Neiman Marcus (to name a few) toured the floor. The riot of images and sound represented the rise of indie beauty in just three short years since IBE’s first LA show. New formulations across all categories expanded the offerings to buyers and press. The indie-universe is a selfsustaining ecosystem that continues to attract the attention of mainstream media. Correspondents from The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, Fast
Company, Entrepreneur, MSN, Fashionista, INC, Forbes, Refinery29, PopSugar and The Hollywood Reporter prowled the aisles to gauge the rapid growth of the emerging beauty business. The ripple effect throughout post-show coverage and social media keeps fueling the phenomenon, with the upcoming Berlin show as the next target for trendwatchers of all stripes. 13

Feelunique Shen Beauty at IBE broke more new ground in LA. An inventive collaboration between Brooklyn’s leading independent retailer and Indie Beauty Media Group, Shen debuted the concept at IBE New York 2018. An early champion of indie beauty brands, founder Jessica Richards provides a boutique perspective on the show floor, where she highlights more than 20 of her favorite brands. Shen’s curated space provides a welcome environment for buyers and brands who sit with Richards for scheduled interviews during the show. Brands that make the cut are then featured on Shen’s e-commerce site. “I don’t sell everything from a brand,” Richards explains. “I launched Ilia with six lipsticks, and I took six of each on consignment. I took Kosås on consignment. Look at these brands now! So proud of them. It’s about taking a risk on something and also filling a niche in the market.” With a carefully curated collection, Shen focuses on strategic partnerships with brands and other like-minded retailers. “I want Shen to reinforce and build on its reputation as the destination to find the newest and freshest independent brands coming to the market. IBE is also kind of the perfect neutral ground,” says Richards. “It’s a lot easier to connect with other buyers and retailers while you’re all at the show. Into the Woods Who needs forest bathing with INCI lists like these? Scores of IBE LA exhibitors culled the coppice for ingredient inspiration. Interesting actives like lion’s mane mushroom, burdock root, oak moss, birch bark extract and snail secretion filtrate gave brands a fairytale feel and promised consumers happily ever after skin.

Mennovations Much ink has been spilled about the men’s grooming boom, a market that’s expected to reach $78 billion globally by 2023. Brands at IBE LA went beyond basic shower gels and shave creams to give guys carefully-crafted targeted products even the most discerning males would deem worthy of wallet share.
Swallow the Seas While everyone’s busy dosing CBD, another green-hued ingredient has been enjoying a resurgence. Algae, in the form of chlorella, spirulina and their lesser-known relatives like dunaliella salina, bloomed at IBE LA. Ingestible brands served up easy-to-pop pills chock full of the nutrient-dense and alkalizing superfood.

Products invoking vintage apothecary sensibilities and, like days of old, are definitively made for and marketed to men or women, but not both, popped up at IBE LA..
Wrapped in Whimsy Brands at IBE LA made it clear that they’re having fun on the job. There was acute cuteness overload happening on the floor as brands served up downright darling packaging that is practically begging to be ‘grammed.

Pit Hits Touting deodorant as aluminumfree isn’t enough to cut through the stench-fighting clutter today. Brands are burrowing into unique niches in the deodorant market, whether they’re tailored to the transition from antiperspirants to natural alternatives, incorporate ingredients from the wider wellness world or delve into unusual formats.

Berlin & Beyond G-Beauty (aka German Beauty) is ready for its close-up. Berlin is welcoming its first Indie Beauty Expo in grand style, with an exhibitor line-up that will rival last October’s debut in London. Anticipation ratcheted enormously with the announcement that Indie Beauty Media Group’s newest strategic retail partner, the European omnichannel giant, Douglas, would be a principal sponsor of the show. The gateway to Europe and its eastern neighbors, Germany and the German-speaking countries of Austria and Switzerland, comprise a formidable demographic, along with Europe’s largest economy. Berlin also boasts of being an accessible and affordable center of innovation, borne out by the scheduled attendance of multiple brands
from adjacent countries, the United States and those outside the European Union. “We have focused more on sourcing independent brands for the Douglas assortment because we see independent beauty as a growing trend, and it helps differentiate us from the competition,” said Tina Müller, CEO of Douglas, when the deal with IBMG was announced. “When IBMG came to us with an opportunity to combine forces to source brands and communicate about them in a bigger way in Europe, we believed it would be a great partnership to put at the forefront of independent brand development.” Given the opportunities inherent in IBE Europe, it’s no wonder the excitement shared by emerging brands grows day by day—and in multiple languages, too.
