Hindu American Foundation Returns to Houston, Holds Successful Annual Gala

Houston: It may have been four years since their last gala, but it felt like there hadn’t been any gap at the Hindu American Foundation’s (HAF) annual gala on Saturday, April 15 at India House. A packed house greeted HAF co-founder Dr. Mihir Meghani and National Leadership Council member Fred Stella as they came to present an update on HAF’s activities and raise funds for HAF. The evening was so successful that HAF raised over $350,000, greatly surpassing the expected target for the event.

The evening started with a welcome from HAF Board of Directors member Rishi Bhutada and a lamp lighting ceremony that included elected officials and dignitaries such as Fort Bend County Commissioner Andy Meyers, District Judge Surendan Pattel, Member of the Sindh Provincial Assembly (Pakistan) Mangala

Sharma, and community leaders Dr. Rashmi Sheshadri and Subhash Gupta. Emcees Karuna Kankani and Shiven Danayak took over from there, first starting with a musical invocation performed by 11 year old twins Aalia and Riaan Shah, students of Houston’s resident musical gurus Pandit Shantilal Shah and Smt Aparna Shah. Meghani and Stella were then introduced to provide the update on HAF’s activities, covering a top ten list of HAF’s achievements, discussing the advocacy efforts of HAF on behalf of the Hindu American community, and detailing the work HAF is doing to promote education about Hinduism in schools and workplaces.

Many of the dancers were elementary school age children. “One of our commitments with the Houston gala is to do our best to showcase Hindu classical music and art, which led us to have a musical invocation and these beautifully choreographed dances accompanied by stirring music,” said HAF Houston Chapter Team

Meghani also announced the plan to hire a Regional Director for the Southwest region, primarily focused on Texas. Coupled with a video that provided a disturbing view of multiple academics calling for Hinduism to be dismantled, the audience was spurred to support HAF’s critical work in

advocacy and education, and responded with generous donations. “We ourselves were inspired by the work HAF is doing, and were motivated by the presentation and videos, and saw that reflected by the attendees,” said HAF Houston Chapter Team Lead Vinay Sarda. ACT Foundation Celebrates Earth Day with Tree Plantings at Texas Gaushala

Houston: In honor of Earth Day on April 22nd, 2023, the ACT Foundation USA team contributed 60 fruit-bearing trees to the Fruit Tree Plantation Drive, initiated by Mohanji, a notable humanitarian and philanthropist. The movement has already planted close to 90,000 fruit trees globally, promoting ecological balance and adding value to the communities they collaborate with.

These 60 trees were then planted at Texas Gaushala in Houston, where the event was attended by parents, youth, and children, with Neeta Sane, a former HCC Trustee for District VII in Fort Bend County, serving as a distinguished guest. Sane relished the experience of planting trees and feeding cows, and the group expressed

their appreciation to Mohanji, their founder, for providing them with a platform to make meaningful contributions to their communities.

In Mohanji’s words, “Fruit tree plantation is not just an act of kindness; it is a social responsibility. This is giving the fruits of kindness to the coming generations beyond species. Fill the forests with fruit trees. Plant more fruit trees in and around your city. It brings sweet grace to our lives beyond time!”

Arora’s Cancer Success Story, Made with Houston Connections HEALTH

Karnal, Haryana PradesH, IndIa: When Manish Arora arrived in the Bayou City in December 2021 for a cancer treatment only available at the famed M.D. Anderson Cancer Hospital at the Texas Medical Center, he was rightly fearful of being in a strange city with only a couple of connections through his physician; the effects of the treatment, how long it would take and the formidable cost of $825,000.

On a recent trip to India, this reporter contacted Arora, now 44, to see how he was doing in his hometown of Karnal, midway between New Delhi and Chandigarh. Over a weekend spent in the area, with a visit to the ancient grounds of Kurukshetra where the Mahabharata war took place, Arora showed lots of vigor and zest for the future, making plans for continuing his career in digital marketing.

His younger brother Vipul who had accompanied him in Houston has relocated to Bangalore for a job with an IT firm. He, wife Suchi and daughter Saibaa, live with his parents, who had also joined him briefly in Houston.

During the treatment, Vipul reached out to the South Asian community for support. Indo American News and Radio helped to spread his story and make connections with various groups to help him, including IACAN and the Foundation For Children Cancer, Research and Support, a Houston-based non-profit which held a

magnificent on-line fundraiser on Sunday evening, February 27 that raised $20,000 (see https://www. indoamerican-news.com/fccrshosts-virtual-fundraiser-for-can -

Manish left to go back to India in March 2022 and has been cancer free ever since. Here is his brief story in his own words:

“I received my Car-T Cell therapy treatment for Diffused Large B-cell Lymphoma malignancy at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Houston on Jan 24, 2022 and

have been in remission ever since. It has taken some time to recover and regain strength, there have been some niggles or infections at times, however this is a small price to pay for being cancer free.

I have started to voluntarily help out care givers and cancer fighters in India with some counselling, guidance and support in their cancer journey. The cause is big and even one life saved is so many lives impacted in a positive way.

I am also trying to resume my professional journey so that I can support my family, become financially independent again and take care of my kid and responsibilities but also do contribute financially to the above cause apart from volunteering for support.

I thank FCCRS board and its team, Keka Kar and her family, Parul Fernandes, Bobby Singh and all the amazing people who associated, prayed for me and offered financial support through the “Ummeed” concert. I can’t forget and will always remain indebted for life. I again thank Dr. Sanjay Bansal and his family for being a friend, guide and noble soul to hold my hand through this journey, Joel and Nozer for sticking it out with me and my family during our stay.

To Jawahar for being an amazing friend in Houston and even visiting us in Karnal after a year, I and my family are truly glad to have met him and brought back the good vibes.”

NYC: Free Food Distributed on Shankaracharya Jayanti

JaMaIca, new yorK cIty (26 April 2023) Yesterday on the auspicious occasion of Shankaracharya Jayanti, free food was distributed on the streets of New York City under “Annasudha”, a program for hunger relief and food security in America, established by Shree Mata Darbar, a Maryland based Hindu religious organization. This was a rare occasion when a mainstream Hindu religious organization stepped outside of its own devotee community, and served the needy in the American mainstream.

Houston: After a well attended event last year, exhibitors and participants from across the world are once again gearing up for the 2023 Offshore Technology Conference, warily confident of a resurgence in the oil and gas industry. The four-day event will be held again at from Monday, May 1 through May 4 at the NRG Park and Stadium. .

For the fourth time, Dartex Industries, started by the veteran oil and gas professional T.J. Sinha manned his own booth within the Danish Pavilion area. Dartex

Industries has a plant in Delhi to manufacture high pressure gaskets, flanges, needle valves and flowline equipment. Sinha has worked worldwide in the oil industry for the past 48 years and has established offices in Faridabad (southeast of Delhi), Houston and Esbjerg, on the western coast of Denmark.

Sinha has developed a professional network of clients worldwide. He welcomes people to his Dartex Industries Booth No:1662 which will displaying the APTEK brand of Instrumentation Valves.

Free food was distributed in the Jamaica area of New York City on Sutphin Blvd with a tall life-size poster of Annapurna Devi giving food to Bhagwan Shiva as alms, picturizing the popular Pauranic account. The Annasudha program was initiated in New York by Komal and Naresh Chand, a recent arrival from the Punjab province of Pakistan. The irony of situation would not be lost on anyone, as the couple who have a five year old daughter to raise, have to struggle hard for their next meal themselves. However, as an expression of power of their faith, and to carry on with a long running family tradition of religious and social service back in West Punjab’s extant Hindu temples, they serve the needy in America. Annasudha program by Shree Mata Darbar gives them an opportunity to continue their family tradition of social service in the land which they call home now.

Ravi Sonnad: Optimizing India’s Population Advantage through Children’s Education

Last week, India received a lot of global attention because it was on the verge of passing China in population, “knocking it from its perch for the first time in at least three centuries, (as) data released by the United Nations” last week shows.

India has a work force that is young and expanding even as that in the industrialized world is aging and, in some cases, shrinking.

It is time for India to deliver on its “demographic dividend”.

However, while India is making great progress in educating its children (especially marginalized ones), according to a UNICEF study, “education and learning systems worldwide are constrained in delivering positive outcomes for children and adolescents and remain mostly focused on the acquisition of knowledge that is not sufficient to prepare them to meet challenges and seize opportunities now and in the future.” In other words, they will lack soft skills such as those needed for collaboration, teamwork, communications, problem-solving and leadership.

By 2030, this UNICEF study states that “an estimated 825 million children, worldwide are expected to leave school without basic secondary level skills.”

Of these about 150 million children will be in India. Developing “soft skills” in these children is vital for India’s progress.

There is an urgent need to expand and transform education and learning systems in India to provide all children and adolescents,

especially those who are marginalized, with quality learning opportunities that include the “soft skills” they need to succeed in school, work, and life.

Enabling Leadership (www. enablingleadership.org) is a 501(c)(3) organization that is focused on helping children develop skills such as leadership, problem-solving, collaboration and communication, with a focus on values and principles, and exposure to gender equality.

Currently, Enabling Leadership works with 9000 children in India and equips them with skills to succeed in a fastchanging world. Its programs enable them to collaborate, reflect on and connect first-hand experiences and learnings from the classroom or playground with their real lives.

It’s a great start but it has a long way to go. These marginalized children of India and Enabling Leadership need your help.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Showing Empathy for Layoff Victims

Palo alto: There seems to be some sort of condition that prevents people who lead large companies from doing layoffs well. Obviously, there’s no great way to tell a bunch of people that they no longer have a job, but there are definitely bad ways.

For whatever reason, many of those people who lead large companies default to the bad ways. Look no further than Elon Musk’s elimination of half of Twitter’s employees by email. Part of that might be that if you’re the CEO of a huge tech company with lots of employees, it can be easy to think of those employees more as a number than as, well, people.

There are a number of reasons that’s problematic, the least of which is that you should always treat people with dignity and respect, even if you’re eliminating their job.

Microsoft is the latest big tech company to lay off a large number of employees, announcing it will cut 10,000 roles by the end of the third quarter. To put it in perspective, 10,000 people is a little less than 5 percent of Microsoft’s 220,000 employees. That’s not a huge layoff in terms of its size relative to the overall company, but it’s a big deal if you’re one of those 10,000 people who won’t be get-

ting a paycheck in a few months.

Of course, Microsoft is not Twitter, and the company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, is not Elon Musk. Nadella seems to understand that it’s possible to let people go with a measure of humanity that is too often lacking in these sorts of things.

Look no further than Nadella’s statement announcing the layoffs, which does a great job explaining how to handle this type of decision. It’s not complicated--in fact, it all comes down to just three words. Here’s what Nadella said in a communication to employees that was published on Microsoft’s blog: We know this is a challenging time for each person impacted. The senior leadership team and I are committed that as we go through this process, we will do so in the

most thoughtful and transparent way possible.

Those three words, “thoughtful and transparent,” just might be the three most important words when it comes to making difficult decisions.

Look, on some level, if I’m getting laid off, it doesn’t matter how thoughtful you are about eliminating jobs if the result is that I no longer get a paycheck. Except, on another level, it does matter because it means that you’re far more likely to try to make it the least terrible you can.

“We will treat our people with dignity and respect, and act transparently,” Nadella wrote. “These decisions are difficult, but necessary. They are especially difficult because they impact people and people’s lives -- our colleagues

and friends.”

What does that mean in practice? Microsoft says it will provide employees with “above-market severance pay, continuing health care coverage for six months, and continued vesting of stock awards for six months.” Contrast that with the fact that Twitter employees are still waiting for the severance they were promised when the company announced layoffs without any notice at all.

Look, it’s never great to lose your job, but it certainly makes it less terrible to know that the people making the decisions recognize the impact they have on real people’s lives. It’s amazing how far a little thoughtfulness and transparency goes in giving people a sense of dignity. That doesn’t change the fact that companies have to make

hard decisions, but it does change the way they handle those decisions.

For the most part, the people you are letting go aren’t responsible for the fact that your company grew too quickly, or that the economy changed dramatically over the past six months. Still, they’re the ones bearing the burden. You owe it to them to get it right.

Ultimately, that’s the point. You can do this poorly, or you can do it well. Doing it well means being thoughtful, sharing information transparently, and treating your employees--even those you are letting go--with respect and dignity.

Even in April 2023, the top businesses in the world continue to make layoffs. While some businesses assert that the job cuts are necessary for cost-cutting, others assert that they are part of a strategy to restructure the business’s organizational structure and eliminate positions to create more effective teams. In the past two months, companies including Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Meta, and Twitter have let go of thousands of people. The second round of layoffs is approaching, according to Amazon and Meta, who broke the news as part of efforts to streamline operations. Considering only the 2023 data, 612 technology firms have already let 1,71,660 people go. -- Inc.

India Evacuating Citizens from Sudan

KHartouM: The first batch of stranded Indians was evacuated from conflict-hit Sudan under Operation Kaveri on Tuesday. A total of 278 people departed from Port Sudan onboard INS Sumedha for Jeddah in Saudi Arabia, said a spokesperson of the ministry of external affairs.

The evacuation comes a day after the MEA announced that India had launched an operation to bring back around 3,000 Indians stranded in Sudan. External affairs minister S Jaishankar had said that around 500 citizens have already reached Port Sudan. Operation Kaveri to bring back Indians from Sudan to be supervised by V Muraleedharan: PM Modi

“Our ships and aircraft are set to bring them back home. We are committed to assisting all our brethren in Sudan,” Jaishankar had tweeted. The MEA had said in a statement that India has also positioned two IAF C-130J on standby in Jeddah.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said the operation is being supervised by MoS for external affairs V Muraleedharan.

Describing the security situation in Sudan as complex and evolving, the Centre on Sunday had said it was pursuing multiple options to evacuate the 3,000 Indian citizens stuck in the country.

was focusing on the safety of over 3,000 Indian citizens presently located throughout Sudan.

Indians residing in Sudan had reached out showing videos of indiscriminate attacks that also targeted residences of Indian community, and looting of essential items by the rebel paramilitary. The fighting had also enveloped the Indian embassy in Khartoum.
